Edition 3, Term One | 29 March 2018 From the Principal’s Desk
Welcome to our final newsletter for Term One!
Just over two weeks ago, we celebrated our College Senior Ball,
with the theme ‘Las Vegas’ at the Leisureplex. It was a wonderful
evening for students and staff, made possible by the efforts of a
number of staff but especially Miss Arnott, her group of dedicated
Year 12 students and parents. The students and guests all looked
stunning and I was most impressed by their impeccable
behaviour. In addition to the students, staff and parents who
assisted, I would also like to thank the group of Year 9 and 10
students who waited tables, served drinks, took photographs and
helped clean up afterwards. It truly was a fantastic evening that
I’m sure our senior students will never forget.
On Monday 9 April, the College will hold its final assembly for the
term, our Endeavour Assembly. The awards presented at this
time are to recognise the outstanding effort and commitment of
students who are working particularly hard in their courses.
Parents will be emailed if their child is receiving an award –
you are warmly invited to attend.
Early next term we will be inviting students, teachers and parents
to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an
online survey. This survey will allow us to gather valid and
reliable data, which will be an important part of our whole school
evaluation and planning process. This survey is anonymous and
we would greatly appreciate your feedback. Your email address
will be provided to MMG Education, a specialist education
consultancy that works with schools in the areas of school
strategic reviews and stakeholder satisfaction. MMG Education is
conducting the anonymous survey on the school’s behalf and
your feedback data is destroyed by MMG Education once they
have finalised the report. Please contact the school office by
13 April if you DO NOT wish to participate in the survey.

The Spirit Newsletter
As part of the System Agreement with the Minister for Education, every Catholic school is required to
have a Code of Conduct in place. The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to provide minimum standards
of conduct in all behaviours and decision making to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students. The
Code applies to all within our school community including staff, students, volunteers, parents and
guardians as applicable. The Code of Conduct and Guidelines are available on the College website.
Breaches of the Code must be notified to the Principal. Recently, all staff working at St Luke’s College
took part in a professional development refresher course regarding child safety. I strongly encourage
all families to access the Code of Conduct on the College website and to contact me if they have any
concerns.
Could I please kindly ask that parents drop off and pick up their children along Rosemary Road
between 8.15am -8.45am and 2.45pm-3.15pm. Parents have been driving up the road to the College
blocking access for all other traffic and creating considerable congestion. This has impacted deliveries
and other services trying to access the College. Your help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
It’s great to see a number of our students travel to school via bicycle. However, it has been noted that
a number are not wearing helmets or have helmets hanging from the handlebars. Duty staff are
speaking to students about the need to wear a helmet. Could I ask that, as parents, you also speak to
your children about the need to wear a helmet to and from school, both from a legal and safety
viewpoint.
I would like to wish everyone a happy and Holy Easter. Easter is an opportunity to take time from our
hectic schedules and reflect on the sacrifice Christ made for all of us on Good Friday and our spiritual
salvation through His resurrection on Easter Sunday. I trust you have an enjoyable weekend with
family and friends.
With this sentiment in mind, a reminder that the College will be closed on Good Friday, March 30,
along with Easter Monday and Tuesday. School will resume for all students on Wednesday 4 April.
God Bless,
Mr Michael Williams
Principal
Deputy Principal’s Address
Reports - SEQTA Engage access
The Interim Reports will be arriving at the end of the term and will once again be in digital format via
SEQTA Engage. Please can I ask that all parents check their access to Engage over the next few weeks
in order to allow sufficient time to rectify any access issues. To access the information click here.
Please contact the school if you need any assistance.
Immunisations
Year 8 and Year 10 students recently received different immunisations from the school nurse. Once
again, the nurses were more than impressed with the way they behaved and their attitude. There will
be further injections for the Year 8 students later in the year.
NAPLAN
All Year 7 and 9 students will undertake the annual NAPLAN testing in the areas of Literacy and
Numeracy. This will take place in week 3 of Term 2. These tests are being held in accordance with
federal requirements and will provide teachers with valuable diagnostic feedback when the results are
returned to the school later in the year. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is just one part of the
teaching, learning and testing program within the College and that they provide a snapshot of a child’s
progress, which are read in conjunction with other results.
WA Universities visit
This week, the Year 11 and 12 students were visited by numerous WA universities. The students were
invited to visit the stalls in the Gym to receive information, as well as ask for advice and have any of
their questions answered. It certainly is time to be looking ahead to future careers for our senior
students.
God bless,
Miss Melanie Caddick,
Deputy Principal (Year 7, 9 & 11)
Deputy Principal’s Address
Easter
We are about to commence the Church's most holy and sacred time – the season of Easter. Our
College community will hold our Easter Mass on Thursday 29 March from 8:45am. Parents are most
welcome to attend but are asked to sign in at Administration before heading to the Gym.
I encourage members of the St Luke’s community to celebrate these key events in our Catholic faith.
Enjoy the Easter eggs and hot cross buns, but please take the time to think, reflect and celebrate the
death and Resurrection of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour.
Note: Easter Tuesday is also a holiday, therefore the Easter break commences on Friday 30 March
(Good Friday) to Tuesday 3 April, with students and staff returning to school on Wednesday 4 April.
Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA)
The assessments in Writing, Numeracy and Reading have been conducted for the majority of the
students. The results will be released for schools to download on 14 May. We will pass them on to
parents shortly after this date. Students who have not demonstrated the minimum standard will also
receive a brief analysis of their last test. The next round of OLNA will be conducted in September this
year.
Leeuwin Adventure Sailing Program
Last Friday lunchtime, 23 March, Mrs Broad and I presented this year’s Leeuwin Program. The
Leeuwin Adventure Sailing Program is designed to develop leadership, teamwork and communication
skills. In 2018, through the Karratha Education Initiative, up to 25 full scholarship positions on the
voyages will be available for students over the age of 15 years, currently in years 10, 11 or 12, and
who complete the community service program. Please see the attached information flyer or see
Mrs Broad in the Library for more information.
Sydney, Canberra and Perisher Ski Tour Proposal
On Monday evening, 26 March, I held an information presentation of the proposed Ski Tour for this
year. If you were unable to attend, please contact me for information before the end of Term 1.
I wish everyone a safe and relaxing Easter holiday.
God bless,
Miss Sharon Cusack
Deputy Principal (Year 8, 10 & 12)
Religious Education
On Palm Sunday, 25 March, we celebrated the first joy of the season. We celebrated Our Lord's
triumphant entrance into Jerusalem where he was welcomed by crowds worshiping him and laying
down palm leaves before him. It also marks the beginning of Holy Week, with the greatest tragedy
and sorrow of the year. Jesus' triumphant return to Jerusalem is only one side of the story.
By now many people are filled with hate for Our Lord. They want to see him stoned, calling Him a
blasphemer, especially after offering proof of His Divinity during a winter visit to Jerusalem for the
Feast of the Dedication.
After this, Jesus went to Perea, where he was summoned to Bethany. There he raised Lazarus from
the dead, a miracle which wins Him such renown among certain Pharisees that they decided finally to
end His life.
Jesus took refuge at Ephrem, returning six days before Passover to Bethany, triumphantly entering
Jerusalem. That evening, He leaves Jerusalem and returns Monday. He spent time with Gentiles in the
Temple, and on Wednesday left for the Mount of Olives. Here he foretold the apostles the events of
the next several days, including His impending death.
He returned to Jerusalem on Thursday, to share the Last Supper with His apostles. He was
subsequently arrested and tried. He was crucified at Calvary on Friday, outside the gates of
Jerusalem.
He was buried the same day, and arose three days later, on Easter Sunday.
All of this is done by our Lord for forgiveness of our sins, and for life everlasting with Him.
God so loved us, that He sent His only begotten Son to die for us, so that our sins may be forgiven.
Maitland House has been busy fundraising for Caritas and last week Maitland organised a basketball
match where the teachers played against the students. Everyone who came down and participated or
watched the game, enjoyed it and this time around the students were able to beat the teachers, the
next game is being planned for the teachers to return triumphant. All funds raised will be sent to
Caritas.
God bless,
Mrs Rhondda Tittums
Head of Religious Education
Careers
2017 Year 12 SUCCESS Stories
St Luke’s College, 2017 graduating students Declan Sach and Toby Wren were successful in obtaining
Apprenticeships with Yara Pilbara.
Declan is currently undertaking a Certificate IV in Engineering - Electrical and Instrumentation.
Toby is completing a Cert III in Engineering - Mechanical Fitter. Both Apprenticeships being
completed over four years.
They were both stand out candidates out of the hundreds of applications that were received by Yara.
When asked why these two were successful with their application, Training Coordinator Murray
Garratt said “Both candidates had completed a Certificate II Traineeship in the field whilst still at
St Luke’s College, so they were able to explain the role in detail and showed a real passion for the
work. They also took the time to do research on Yara and had a good understanding of what we did
on the plant and the process for producing our products”.
Congratulations Declan and Toby!
Arshya Pankaj, a past St Luke’s College student from 2011, writes an
inspirational story about her experiences as a regional student and
overcoming barriers to high-status careers. She highlights the exposure
she received through the UWA Aspire Programme whilst at school in Year 9,
which lead her to her pathway to Medicine.
To read Arshya’s story click here.
Aspire UWA work with Western Australian high school students to inspire and educate them about
the benefit of studying at university. For more information on Aspire click here.
The GREaT Hospital Programme
There was an overwhelming response for applications to the GREaT program with over 750
applications being received by the cut off on Friday 9 March throughout WA. Only 200 students
throughout WA will receive placements. It is encouraging to have such a strong response by students
wishing to learn more about nursing and midwifery.
All successful students will be notified by no later than 29 March and students will have 10 days to
confirm if they wish to accept the offer. Those who have not been successful will be notified by
Friday 13 April (end of term 1) to allow for second round offers to be sent out.

CITIC Pacific Mining - Mine Site Tour
On 7 March, Navyaa Shukla, Zoe Oliver, Taylor Sparks and Sharni Strong, the female component of
the Year 12 Student Executive Team along with our Principal, Mr Williams, caught a bus out to Cape
Preston Mine to attend a special presentation for International Women’s Day, hosted by CITIC Pacific
Mining.
We were given a tour of the mine and gained an insight into the
different roles women play within the mine’s operation. We were
able to speak to women from various departments, from
supervisors to those employed in health and safety. Mining roles
are predominantly male orientated, however, this trip showed us
that women make a significant contribution in the mining
industry.
The tour was followed by a delicious lunch where woman
working within the mine were able to join us for a long table
lunch and talk about their experiences in the mining industry.
The students were seated amongst the women and were able to
ask a range of different questions about their occupations.
This trip was a privilege to attend and the young ladies that
were lucky enough to go, learnt a great deal, not only about
women in the mining industry but about mining as a whole.
A big thank you to CITIC Pacific Mining for making the mine visit
possible. It was a fantastic experience.

International Women’s Day
On Thursday, 8 March, St Luke’s College held an awareness breakfast to celebrate International
Women’s Day. This involved morning pancakes to celebrate women while also using
#PressForProgress to promote their event. In the morning, staff and students had the opportunity to
take photos, promote their support on social media and have some fun designated photo area.
Later in the day, the girls were addressed by two inspiring women within the Pilbara community;
Citizen of the Year 2018 and long-time active member of our community, Tammy Tenant and personal
trainer, adventurer, counsellor, blogger, fitness contributor, presenter, Move Your Body ambassador
and founder of Move For Mental Health, Kylianne Farrell. These spectacular women shared their
insights and gave advice to the young girls at St Luke’s.
“Do what you love and you’ll never feel like you’re working,” Tammy
shared. As a young woman, searching for a suitable career path is a
difficult decision, so Tammy’s wise words inspired many young girls
to overcome doubt and pursue whatever makes them happy.
To add, Kylianne shared the importance of mental health and taking
risks. “Self love is when we learn to accept both things about
ourselves; it’s about accepting the good things and the bad things.
Feel the fear, be vulnerable… but take a chance
anyway.”
The event was an incredible success and
demonstrated the indelible message of strength and
unity that women continue to spark throughout the
world.

Uniform Shop
Please note the uniform shop is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15am – 3:15pm. There
has been an increased number of people asking the administration office staff for uniforms outside
the shop times, this will not continue unless there is an emergency. The administration staff have
been very helpful, but it takes them away from their respected duties. If you are unable to visit the
shop during opening hours, please make use of the online ordering system. Students are able to
collect their orders during lunch breaks, if not collected on those days orders are left at the office for
students to collect at any time.
