Edion 10, Term Four | 26 October 2018 From the Principal’s Desk Welcome to the final term for 2018. It’s hard to believe how quickly this year is going! Our Year 12 students have now completed their formal education here at the College. Our recent graduation assembly enabled our Year 12 class to pass on a number of messages to our younger students, teachers and parents, and there was a strong theme of gratitude for their education, for each other and for the opportunities they have had during their educational journey at the College. That evening, we celebrated Mass at St Paul’s Church, followed by the Graduation Dinner. The whole day was a wonderful celebration of both them as young people and what we seek to build for all of our students here at St Luke’s – good relationships. On behalf of the St Luke’s College community, I wish all our departing Year 12 students the very best for the future. I hope they will look back on their time at the College with fond memories. To our ATAR students, our best wishes and prayers for your upcoming examinations. Recently our College celebrated Mass in honour of our patron, St Luke. The Mass gave us a wonderful insight into the man who was St Luke the Evangelist. St Luke highlighted Jesus’ great love for those who operated at the margins of society the poor, the sick and the children. His mission is our mission, we must continually reach out to those who need us and offer our practical and prayerful support. The gymnasium interior was painted just before the holidays and new tinting was added to all the windows a few weeks ago. This ‘facelift’ has made a very noticeable difference to this space. My thanks goes to FOSL for their generous support in funding the cost of the tinting. I know both staff and students are most appreciative of this upgrade as we head into the warmer months. This year marks the 10 th anniversary of the Karratha Education Initiative. The KEI has contributed approximately $5 000 000 to the College during this time. These funds cover expenses associated with revision courses, seminars, scholarships and professional development opportunities, to name just a few. The Spirit Newsletter

Members of our College community along with some past students attended a sundowner last week to

acknowledge this milestone My sincere thanks goes to the Woodside operated NWSP for their

generous support over the last decade on behalf of the St Lukersquos College community This support has

had a significant impact on the educational outcomes of hundreds of St Lukersquos College students I look

forward to our continuing association

The school nurse is now attending the College one full day a fortnight to support our students This

complements the work Headspace have been doing at the College over the past six months

particularly in the field of mental health Students can self-refer however if for any reason you would

like your child to see the nurse please contact their House Coordinator who can facilitate an

appointment

My sincere thanks to FOSL on behalf of the community for their organisation of our quiz night held last

Saturday A great evening combined fundraising with community engagement with approximately

$16000 raised towards the cost of replacing the chiller in the gym My thanks also to the many

individuals and businesses in the region who donated prizes or services as part of the evening Your

support is most appreciated in helping to deliver a successful night I would also like to acknowledge

Mr Tony Weir and Mr Lee Clarke who kept us entertained acting as MC and DJ for the evening A

big well done to everyone involved

These students will be formally commissioned and presented with their badges early next year

Head Boy Reuben McCawley Head Girl Emily Caspersz Sports Captain Mackenzie King

Sports Captain Ethan Moyle and Prefects Priya Naidoo and Peyton Fell

When announcing these students at our final assembly for Term 3 I spoke about servant leadership

and the need to work in the best interests of others and the office their bear as stewards to their

position Good leadership is not about what the individual can gain through their title It is about

making a positive difference in the best interest of the community On behalf of the College I wish

these students the best of luck in their roles next year Irsquom sure they will do the College proud

Finally a reminder that if you are planning on withdrawing your child from the College at the end of

the year a school terms notice is required as documented in our enrolment policy If this notice is not

provided you can be liable for up to the equivalent of one termrsquos school fees Planning is well underway

During Year 11 and 12 General pathway students worked to complete a certificate qualification

towards completing their WACE Some through school-based traineeships and some alongside a paid

unpaid work placement developing a set of transferable workplace skills within a specific Industry

related area Part of the workplace learning students were expected to accumulate a minimum of 110

working hours Students document their working hours by completing a Workplace Learning Logbook

signed by their workplace supervisor

I would like to congratulate all year 12 students on successfully completing their certificate

qualifications some students went above and beyond completing more than one certificate course

I would also like to thank the local business community for assisting and supporting our students with

work placements It provides students with a realistic experience in the world of work and more

importantly within a specific Industry area Students were able to gain experience upskilling

themselves in areas such as time management independence responsibility communication

presentation maturity as well as hands on work better preparing them for future employment
