proclaimed themselves to be King of the Hill. It
was only a matter of time.
Let’s hope and pray that we never again need
the kind of help we needed seventeen years ago.
And if we’re stuck for what we should do to find
miracle in the ordinary again, here are two ideas.
First, do something for someone you love, but
don’t let them know. Second, drive over to
Friendship Park by the airport and watch plane
after plane after plane gracefully glide to the
ground the same way those four planes should
have seventeen years ago. Say a prayer for
those you love. Say a prayer for those who still
grieve.
Shalom,
Rick
A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO THE CHRISTIAN TEMPLE
CONGREGATION
Most of you will remember receiving a letter
from Rick Powell and Cindy Wagner in late
June encouraging our membership to review
the amount they had pledged to the church
for the year 2018-19 and either revise their
pledge or make an extra one-time gift to help
us realize our goals for ministry this year.
The VERY good news is that we had a most
generous response to this request. As of now,
we have raised over $18,600 which means
that with only a few spending cuts we'll be
able to proceed with the kind of ministry that
will make us proud, and help us extend God's
grace into the world around us.
Thank you so all so much for your generosi-
ty. Your response is humbling and reminds us
that we are all in this together, and that we
are led by the grace of God!
Two memories about those first few days after
9/11 linger for me now seventeen years after
the attacks.
The first was how the ordinary was pumped full
of pure, crystalline miracle. Everything we had
previously taken for granted sparkled like a
harvest moon. The kids at soccer practice
looked like they were dancing before the Lord.
Next door neighbors who showed up at the
front door were greeted like family we hadn’t
seen in ages. Voices that compose the sound-
track of our lives fell on the ear like favorite
songs. Sometimes the only thing that kept us
from falling to the ground in grief was the hug
from a friend. Life suddenly made fragile,
became life, beautiful.
The other memory I savor from the days follow-
ing the attacks is the way it felt to be an
American. For the first time in my memory our
country was the collective recipient of charity
and good will from people around the world.
We were no longer the greatest nation on the
face of the earth or the big, bad, bully. We
were people who needed other people’s help
to make it through. A small measure of comfort
from the pain of our loss came from the
assurances we received from other countries
who reached out to us. We were all in this
thing together.
We’ve heard a lot lately about American
Exceptionalism. But I’m still not sure why it is
important to tell ourselves we are the greatest
nation in the world. Isn’t it enough to say we
are a great nation among other great nations,
so often with much to give- occasionally in
need of others’ help? Don’t we remember from
when we were kids what happened to
ABSOLUTLEY EVERYONE who proudly

Dear Christian Church Capital Area Friends!
Greetings! Now is the time register for our 2018 Christian Church (Disciples Of Christ) Capital Area Regional Assembly
October 12-13 at Largo Community Church in Mitchellville, Maryland. Our theme, "Together On Earth As It Is In Heaven"
calls us to not just imagine, but live the Beloved Community that Jesus sets forth in his prayer from Matthew 6:10.
We are delighted to announce that we now have online registration and payment (as well as the regular paper/mail
registrations). To register online and for all Regional Assembly Information, go to: http://www.cccadisciples.org/regional

Saturday options, on the website and attached registration form.
The Assembly begins with an All Assembly Dinner Friday night, October 12th and continues through the day on Saturday,
October 13th until late afternoon. Our entire Assembly will be wrapped around the statement that resulted from the Mission
First! gatherings held at events all around the church like our Regional Assembly in 2016. That statement reads:
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is called to participate in God's mission and move people and communities toward
wholeness. We work together across generations to achieve the following goals:
• Equip leaders grounded in Scripture, centered on Christ, and immersed in the Spirit;
• Create communities of inclusion and care
• Attend to the needs of the vulnerable; and
• Overcome structural and systemic injustice.
Our keynote speaker for Friday night's dinner will be the Rev. Sandhya Jha, pastor, author, founder and director of the
Oakland Peace Center, and pro-reconciliation/anti-racism trainer with Reconciliation Ministry. We are equally thrilled to
announce that the preacher for Saturday's worship will be the Rev. Yvonne Gilmore, pastor, poet and a spoken word artist,
and Associate Dean of the Disciples Divinity House at the University of Chicago. Rev. Gilmore is also a trainer with
Reconciliation Ministry.
Our Saturday Learning Center leaders are:
• Ken Brooker Langston, Disciples Center for Public Witness
• Beverly Goines, National City Christian Church
• Sandhya Jha, Oakland Peace Center

Kline Moore. A diverse group of dynamic leaders under their leadership are pulling together this dynamic program.
SO MUCH MORE is available on the website as will be updated information as it becomes available. And Please,
contact us if you need more! (Thanks to the Rev. Dr. Beverly Goines for her great work on the website!)

Sixteen Easy Ways to Be Involved at Christian Temple
1. Shelter Meals- help prepare meals for the Westside Homeless Shelter usually on the first Sunday of each month in the church kitchen starting at 5:30 pm.
2. Chancel Choir- rehearsals are on Thursdays at 7:30 most weeks. Come and help us make beautiful music!
3. Chancel Bells- want to make music without having to sing?! Join the Bell Choir on Tuesdays at 7 PM. Beginners are most welcome. All you need to know is the difference between your right and left hand!
4.Community Thanksgiving Dinner- Want to add meaning to your Thanksgiving holiday? Be part of our Community Thanksgiving feast! We'll need some help with food preparation on the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving and lots more help on Sunday as we serve this meal for residents of Ridgeway Manor Nursing Home, Glynn Taff Assisted Living and other neighbors who may not have an opportunity to enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving meal.
5. Respond to the Call- Every year on the weekend closest to the dates of the attacks on September 11th, 2001, we remember the victims and families of that attack by offering an opportunity to serve. This year we'll need help on the weekend of September 15-16, but especially on Saturday morning from 8:30 to noon. Skilled and unskilled labor will be warmly received!
6, Lay Reader- Each of our worship services offers an opportunity for a volunteer to read the scriptures for the day. Feel free to sit with family and friends before and after the readings!
7. Women's Group Movie Night- Usually on the first or second Monday of the month women are invited to the church at 7 to watch and discuss a movie. Refreshments are served.
8. Men on First and Third- On the first and third Friday of each month a group of men gather from 7:30 to 9 for breakfast at the Cafe on the Grove (on the campus of Spring Grove Hospital). This group offers great fellowship an opportunity to talk about the issues of the day.
9. Journey To Bethlehem- mark December 15th on your calendar if you love the Christmas season and want an opportunity to make the Nativity story come to life- literally!
10. Sunday School Helper- Around here we call Sunday School "Children at Worship" since our time with the kids is divided between teaching the stories of our faith and preparing the kids to join the worship service. Of course we need teachers but we also really need parents, grandparents and young adults to help in the class a few times each year.
11. Caring Team- Sometimes all that's needed is a phone call, a card or a warm casserole share the love of the church with those who are in special need. This team organizes this effort. Helpers of all kinds are needed!
12. 9:30 Forum- Each week before worship begins you are invited to join those who gather in the library at 9:30 for a donut, a cup of coffee and a topical discussion. This group is for the curious, not the experts! Join us!
13. Study Groups- If you're retired or have some time in the middle of the day, two opportunities might be of interest. On Wednesdays at ten a group gathers in the library to participate in a video series either on the Bible or the history of the faith. And our book club meets once a month on Wednesday afternoons as well.
14. Theology on Tap- once a month on a Friday night in a local restaurant a group gathers around the table to lift a glass, grab a bite to eat and talk about a faith related topic. Doubters, searchers, and non Christians are as welcome as church members!
15. The Well- this group meets in the library on Thursday evenings at 6:15 for prayer, reflection and support. Newcomers are most welcome.
16. Zumba- If prayer, support and reflection doesn't sound as good to you as a little exercise in a no-judgement zone, walk on back to fellowship hall in comfortable clothes. The first session is always free!

A Choice No Mother Should Ever Have to Make
by Tana Liu-Beers, Disciples Immigration Legal Counsel
Week of Compassion, PO Box 1986, Indianapolis, IN 46206
Yesica and Yani were small children when their mother left El Salvador to make the journey to the U.S. They grew up with their grandmother and made weekly phone calls to their mother in the Unit-ed States. Their mom's earnings from the U.S. allowed them to go to school.
When Yesica and Yani were eleven and thirteen their walk to school changed. Someone started fol-lowing them as they walked along the only highway leading to their school. After a few days that someone showed his face. They knew who he was. Everyone knew who he was: a gang member who had threatened their neighbors. Everyone in the neighborhood believed this young man and his associates had killed the uncle of a neighbor. Of course, they didn't have proof because the police wouldn't investigate. It was likely that the police were on his payroll. But when he told Yesica and Yani that they had to be his girlfriends, they understood what that meant. They understood that girls forced into his gang were constantly raped by all its members. They understood that to refuse meant certain death.
When Yesica and Yani finally told their mom what was going on, she immediately sent all her sav-ings to El Salvador to pay to bring her daughters to the United States. She did not take lightly her decision to send her daughters on foot and atop trains across thousands of miles of desert and dan-ger. She tried not to think of her own journey. She tried to get the girls on birth control, knowing the likelihood of assault on the road. It was a weighty decision, yet it was hardly a choice.
Yesica and Yani arrived at the U.S. border after being abandoned by a smuggler in the desert. They were detained by Customs & Border Protection. Despite their dehydration and exhaustion, they managed to express their fear of returning to Honduras convincingly enough to be allowed to apply for asylum. Months later the immigration judge refused to hear their claims. They were deported to Honduras in 2012. Their fate is unknown.
****
Tana Liu-Beers, Disciples Immigration Legal Counsel and former representative of Yesica and Yani, notes that cases like these are far too common and are even more likely under current immigration policies. On July 12, 2018, the U.S. immigration agencies, by order of the Attorney General, further foreclosed claims of asylum based on gang violence and domestic violence, which will undeniably result in more youth like Yesica and Yani being sent to their deaths.
For the sake of young people like Yesica, Yani, and countless others, Week of Compassion works with partners such as Disciples Immigration Legal Counsel, Disciples Refugee and Immigration Min-istries, and Church World Service Immigration and Refugee Program to support advocacy and legal assistance. In the name of Jesus, who himself found safety and shelter in a foreign land, we seek the fair, compassionate, and hospitable treatment of immigrants and asylum-seekers.
Here are some things you can do right now:
• Learn about how current policies are affecting our immigrant neighbors, and connect with immi-grant communities in your area.
Call and visit your elected representatives to oppose policies of family separation and support legis-lation that will keep families together. (Information and resources are available through Disciples Refugee and Immigration Ministries and Disciples Immigration Legal Counsel
• Continue to pray, learn, and speak out!

A WORD OF SUNDAY MORNING CAUTION
Early in August one of our members had her purse stolen sometime during our Sunday morning activities at the church. This incident reminds us of the importance of keeping track of our valuables even in a space like the church where we feel so safe. Best to hold onto those purses! In addition to being careful with our things, this incident reminds us all that there are lots of great reasons to reach out with love and a smile to people we haven't seen before at church!

CHRISTIAN TEMPLE (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) 5820 EDMONDSON AVENUE BALTIMORE, MD 21228-1929
Welcome Statement
Christian Temple is an Open and Affirming congregation of the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ). For us, this means that we cherish all God’s children and welcome
everyone to Christ’s table of grace as we ourselves have been welcomed. We are
especially intent on deepening our congregational welcome to anyone for whom church
has not felt like a safe place.
Our community of faith includes members of the LGBTQ community and ranges widely
in age, physical and mental abilities, family and economic situations, marital status,
gender, skin color, ethnicity, and political convictions.
Join us as we seek to embody the realm of God through our diversity, celebrate the
grace of God through our worship, and share the love and justice of God from our
doorsteps to the ends of the earth.
