Generosity makes everything possible and makes
our hearts sing! Please be generous in your sup-
port of Christian Temple and the community that
graciously receives our ministry.
Shalom,
Rick
This year our Every Member Commitment will
present us with two important opportunities.
OUR ANNUAL COMMITMENT, OR PLEDGE
This critically important financial promise to
Christian Temple is the engine that drives our
ministry. When our members are generous, AND
willing to say ahead of time through this pledge,
what we plan to give over the coming year, our
congregational leadership is able to gather those
promises and make ambitious, but also fiscally
responsible, plans for our ministry between July
1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.
We will receive these commitments between
April 8th and May 6th. And, we will celebrate our
generosity with an after worship Cinco de Mayo
happy hour on May 6th in the gathering!
OUR GIFT TO A NEIGHBOR IN NEED
The Horch family lived around the corner from
Christian Temple for many years. We got to
know Tracy (the mom) when she brought her
kids to the play group that met in our old nursery,
and would stop on the way in and out of the
building to visit. Since then the Horches have
been active in our neighborhood.
Late last winter, Keely, the Horch’s youngest of
three kids, suffered a massive stroke after con-
tracting an aggressive bacterial infection. Thank-
fully, the stroke didn’t affect Keely’s cognitive
function. But the twelve year old girl who loves to
bake and play soccer is now a quadriplegic with
many special needs.
We know that the needs of the community are
many. But we plan to offer us all an opportunity
to make a gift to the Horch family- along with our
annual commitment-to help them defray their
enormous expenses and to make sure they know
Christian Temple still cares for them.
Rick Powell will be leading a discussion of the
book “Everything Happens for a Reason- And
Other Lies I’ve Loved” by Kate Bowler. The
book is written by a woman living with end
stage colon cancer and discusses issues
around how to offer care to ourselves and
others in the midst of life’s difficulties. It won’t
be necessary to buy the book in order to en-
joy the class but we will make copies of the
book available for those who are interested
for around $15.

It’s Time to Register for Vacation Bible School!
We want to invite all children from age 4 through those completing 5th grade to this year’s Vacation Bible School (VBS), called Rolling River Rampage: Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with God. Rolling River Rampage will take place from June 18-22 from 9 am to 12 noon right here at Christian Temple. Kids will experience a Bible-based good time in a camping/rafting environment as they learn the many ways they can experience God in their lives. We will have a week filled with Bible stories, music, mission projects, crafts, science, a reptile show, games, and a puppet show!
To register for VBS, go to http://rrr.cokesburyvbs.com/CTemple or pick up a registration form at church. For more information, contact Donna Goon at 410-750-1936 or at [email protected]. You may also contact the church office at 410-747-2041.
Vacation Bible School Needs Volunteers
We need lots of volunteers to make VBS happen, including teacher helpers. You don’t have to work the whole week—we’ll take your help any day that you can make it June 18-22. Many jobs can be done in advance of the VBS week (buying snacks or last minute supplies, prepping crafts, games and science activities to name a few), so even if you can’t be there during the week of VBS, you might be able to help! We encourage youth in high school and middle school to be part of the fun. Adults and teens who wish to volunteer can also register at our VBS website.
As You Do Your Spring Cleaning, Check for These Supplies for Vacation Bible School!
We need lots of supplies for VBS crafts, science, games and for our set. Here is a current list of things you might have around the house that you could donate or lend to us. There is a
purple box in the Gathering where you can place these items:
And finally, we continue to ask for your prayers for a successful VBS program.

Participating in World Peace
When Peace on Earth today seems so far away it is not the time to give up Hope. Christian Temple just held a small exhibit introducing the Peace Pole Project that has planted tens of thousands of Peace Poles in over 180 countries within the past forty years. They all have the same prayer on each side of the six or seven foot tall vinyl poles with a choice of a different language on each side. In English it reads: May Peace Prevail on Earth.
Sponsored by the Peace Pole Society, the example shown below has been planted in Cambodia. Check-ing the internet one can find even more ways of using the theme "May Peace Prevail on Earth”, such as ending e-mails with these words. Joining this urgent message made visible on the Christian Temple property would add our Hope and Intention of such a worthy cause. Let’s Do It!
The 5K Walk for Youth will
be held on Saturday, May 5th,
2018 beginning at 9:00 am. The
Walk meanders through surrounding
residential neighborhoods and down-
town Catonsville. The primary
course is approximately 3.5 miles for the hearty hiker. Shorter
courses are available. The Walk begins and ends on the Home’s
campus at 205 Bloomsbury Avenue in Catonsville. The finish
line includes refreshments, music, activities, awards, and prizes.
We invite companies, families, organizations, neighborhoods,
faith-based groups, agencies, and individuals to participate in the
Walk as an individual, team, sponsor, or contributor.

Kitchen Clean-up
• Please clean up immediately following any use of the kitchen.
• All leftover food must be taken home with you. Please do not leave any leftovers in the refrigerator/freezer. They will be removed and likely need to be disposed of immediately. (The exception to this rule will be commercially packaged condiments and sealed bottles of water, juice, etc... These will be tossed out prior to their expiration date.)
• After an event, remove trash bags and place them in the outside trash containers. Remember to securely close the lids.
• Please make sure that counters are cleaned and cleared of food and debris.
• Following directions at the sink area, please wash used cooking and serving items. Do not leave dishes sitting out to air dry. Please towel dry all washed items and put them away properly.
• Please check to make sure that the oven has been turned off.
• Place unused paper products in the pantry.
Thank you for helping us to keep Christian Temple’s
kitchen clean and healthy to use!
Note: Proper food storage is critical and a requirement of the Health Department. Please let the office know if you are planning to place any food in the refrigerator or freezer prior to an event. All food items should be completely wrapped and labeled with your name and event, ingredients, and date of preparation. Unopened, prepackaged commercial food items are okay as long as they have an expiration date and ingredient listing. Please still label these items with your name and event.

"This is the Easter message, that awakening is possible, to the goodness of God, the sacredness of
human life, the sisterhood and brotherhood of all." -Anne Lamott
Thanks to your gifts, Week of Compassion is always about the work of Easter - every day, around the world!
We know that, indeed, all life is sacred and so we seek to help folks recover from natural disaster, to help our
brothers and sisters who live in poverty seek better lives through Fair Trade and sustainable agricultural
practices, and to assist in the empowering women around the globe to lives of greater dignity and hope.
Easter means that not even the worst that the world can do will ever defeat the love of God! And Easter
therefore is our call to follow God's lead in not letting the "powers and principalities" defeat our hope, and to do
all we can to witness to the possibility of resurrection and of new life. It sometimes seems, again Christian
writer Anne Lamott says, that "we are an Easter people living in a Good Friday world," for pain, suffering, and
injustice are too much a part of too many lives. But God's call to us is to indeed live as Easter peoples,
knowing that every effort we make to alleviate that pain and suffering and injustice is a sign of resurrection
and new and renewed life.
These efforts would be far less possible without your prayers and your gifts to Week of Compassion. Thank
you, thank you. "Be," Lamott says, "a resurrection story"! Together we shall continue to write new chapters of
that story, every day, around the world. www.weekofcompassion.org/our-impact/

CHRISTIAN TEMPLE (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) 5820 EDMONDSON AVENUE BALTIMORE, MD 21228-1929
Welcome Statement
Christian Temple is an Open and Affirming congregation of the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ). For us, this means that we cherish all God’s children and welcome
everyone to Christ’s table of grace as we ourselves have been welcomed. We are
especially intent on deepening our congregational welcome to anyone for whom church
has not felt like a safe place.
Our community of faith includes members of the LGBTQ community and ranges widely
in age, physical and mental abilities, family and economic situations, marital status,
gender, skin color, ethnicity, and political convictions.
Join us as we seek to embody the realm of God through our diversity, celebrate the
grace of God through our worship, and share the love and justice of God from our
doorsteps to the ends of the earth.
