THE BEGINNING PROSPECTOR (part 1)by Gloria Forest

New prospectors often don't know what they need to get started prospecting. A lot of new prospectors wonder if they have to spend a bundle just to get started. They see the equipment that more experienced prospectors have and wonder how much of all this stuff they need just to see if they will like prospecting.

The equipment they need to get started is very simple and does not cost a lot of money. The things you need to get started are very simple; a gold pan, a shovel, a snuffer bottle, and a vial to keep your gold in. A good gold pan will cost about $10.00. Most people already have a shovel in their home. A snuffer bottle will cost $3 or $4 dollars, and a vial about 50 cents. So getting started will cost under $15.

For most prospectors, a plastic gold pan should be their first piece of equipment, and panning should be the first technique they master. The basic idea of panning is to shake the pan so that the heavier materials settle in the bottom, and then the lighter materials on top can be washed off the surface. The shaking and washing continues until only a small concentrate of black sand and hopefully some gold remains in the pan. At this point the materials can be swirled around to isolate the gold and suck it up with the snuffer bottle. The snuffer bottle can then be emptied into your gold vial.

Go on a few outings with the club, practice your panning, have some fun doing it, and never be afraid to ask questions, of the more experienced members. We are all there to have some fun searching for gold.

??Our local druggist, Ian, asked me the other day, because he knew I was raised on a farm:

He said: We are building a coup for some new

chickens at our place. I started to put some doors for us and some for the chickens. But I was told I couldn't put four of them, because it wouldn't be a chicken coup anymore, but a chicken sedan?

C: Old Business:

Camp Millennium Annual Panning Lessons:Gary Sturgill, our president gave a hearty thank you to the seven members for helping out at Camp Millennium this year. The kids really enjoy these panning lessons.

Pump Permits:All the paperwork is done with the water board – Now the papers are at the Planning Dept. awaiting a signature signing off on the permit at which point we sent it to Salem for final “Review and Approval” and will cost another $40.00. We should have this done by the time dredge season is over and we will be able to use it. This is turning into a long drawn out process.

Seven Feathers Panning Classes:A sign up sheet will be passes around for everyone to

sign up if they can possibly come to help. Thanks for everyone who have signed up and to those who have helped in the past.

The club will have a few copies if you plan to camp there. Please see your Secretary Cheryle Golgert for a copy.

Election Committee:The election committee will consist of Belena Sturgill, Dedria Mable and Vicki Johnston. Election time is coming up again. Everyone please consider putting their name on the ballot for an office.

Non-Ethanol Gas Stations in Douglas County: Cheryle Golgert gave a report of her survey of gas stations in our area that sell non-ethanol gas.
