SOLUTION FLUENCY

A problem solving exercise using the 5 D’s as a learning process:

DefineDiscoverDesignDeliverDebrief

Students could research a localized problem in a developing country such as lack of educational resources, and use the internet to discover ways to contribute. They could collaboratively create simple bilingual books or brochures with simple information on publisher or other publishing software. These could be passed on to an organization such as the WI/Nicaragua partners for their lending library program.

INFORMATION FLUENCY

Effectively using the 5 A’s to access and interpret digital information.

AskAccessAnalyzeApplyAssess

Plan a trip to a Spanish-speaking country. Using travel websites, airline information, etc., plan a 7 day trip within a set budget. Also include photos of the area. Organize trip itinerary and photos on Power point or Prezi. Have students vote on itinerary in terms of best value for the budget.

COLLABORATION FLUENCY

Working with real and virtual partners to solve problems through online partnerships.

Students can collaborate with partners via Wikispaces or Google Docs to brainstorm solutions to a variety of topics. For example, they can compile lists of resources to help them be better global citizens. Lists could include stores that sell fair trade products, easy ways to conserve energy or water, websites with games that allow “free” donations to help combat world hunger. Feedback on experiences with these resources can be shared on a wiki, Google Docs, or via Skype if available.

CREATIVITY FLUENCY

Capturing meaning through creative design using images, video, stories and graphic design.

Students could do an image tour of a Spanish-speaking country using images and Voice Thread, Photostory or other presentation applications. They could narrate their fictional trip using their own voices. Advanced application would include photo mash-ups where the students could place their own images in photos of places they “visited”, such as Macchu Picchu or the Sun and Moon Pyramids in Mexico.

MEDIA FLUENCY

Learning how to be a discerning consumer of media. Being able to analyze form, intent and effectiveness of media messages.

Students could search and study travel ads and videos, and create their own travel poster (such as on Glogster) or video to encourage travel to a Spanish – speaking country.

DIGITAL CITIZEN

Learning to be courteous, safe, and discerning when interacting online through various media.

Digital citizenship can be spiraled into many learning opportunities as mini-lessons or introductory lessons. In setting up a class message board, the teacher can discuss rules of basic etiquette when responding to posts, such as how to address the poster by name, and if disagreeing, how to do so respectfully. Everyone should feel safe in sharing their thoughts in such a forum. Teachers should also distinguish between a closed forum and a more open environment where people are not always who they seem to be online.
