The Shama of MajokeyThe program Livelihood Support & Promotion of Small Community Infrastructure

Project (LACIP) is co-nanced by the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW. The

total Project cost is 31.5 Million Euros and is being executed by Pakistan Poverty Allevi-

ation Fund (PPAF) from April 2012 to December 2015. LACIP targets 127 Union Coun-

cils in 7 target Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa i.e. Buner, Charsadda, DI Khan, Swabi,Chitral, Haripur and Nowshera.

    Background and Identification

Village Majokey is one of the villages of Union Council-MC-2 Parang of Charsadda. It

comprises of 280 households and a total population of 2,520. Majority of the popula-

tion resides in the main village, whereas some of the farmers are living in small ham-

lets on agriculture elds. Majority of the population comes under the category of ultra

poor and their main source of income comes from working as private servants, farm-

ers, driving taxi/chingchi and daily wages labors. The ood of 2010 severely hit the

area and aected the village communications system as well as completely destroyedthe existed drinking water supply and sanitation system. Women and children had to

walk several kilometers to bring water from alternate sources, which was a cumber-

    some task on its own.

According to the situational analysis carried out, major problems of the area were identied which included lack of drinking water supply

schemes, unpaved streets, drainage and sanitation issues, lack of link roads and lack of water availability for irrigation purposes. The lack of

health care facilities and no proper arrangements of wastewater and solid waste disposal paved the way for risk of water borne diseases

and other seasonal diseases i.e. malaria, diarrhea and skin infections.

    Process

The targeted community approached LACIPs Partner

Organization SPADO for registration and formed a

Male Community Organization named Shama con-stituting 23 members along with a president and a

general secretary. The Community Organization de-

veloped a village development plan, which highlight-

ed a drinking water scheme (DWSS) as one of their

    priorities.

Shama forwarded a resolution to LACIP, along with

technical and nancial assistance needed for the

DWSS scheme. The Partner Organizations social and

technical team proceeded and visited the site for

socio economic survey before implementation of the

project. After the approval of PPAF, the Community

Organization was intimated to open a bank account

where 15% of the total cost of the scheme was borne

by the community and 85% paid by PPAF.

In order to ensure smooth implementation of the

    scheme, the Community Organization constituted

three dierent committees, project committee, audit

committee and maintenance committee. The role of

these committees was to check the quality of the work,

transparency and ensure the maintenance of the

    scheme.

    Implementation and Impact

LACIPs Partner Organization proceeded with the implementation of 6 envi-

ronmental friendly small and medium infrastructure schemes of Hand

Pumps in the village, which are being maintained by the community. In to-

tality, the direct and indirect beneciaries from these 6 hand pumps are 280

    Households of village Majokey.

I have no words to express my happiness when heard about the drinking

water supply schmes in our village. I got membership in community organiza-

tion and upon the consensus of neighbors I requested SPADO to install the

scheme near to our house because of my disability. Earlier, it was very diffi-

cult to fetch water from far distances. After decreased work load, I have

enrolled my two daughters in nearby government school.
