in the Wrong Places

Mother of Sorrows Church – Lent 2015

From the Baltimore Catechism

“The Tree of Sin”

What did you

observe since last

week’s session on

the sin of

Pride?

Brief Overview

Demonstrations of love gone wrong:

Perverted LoveLegitimate love of self but the imagination that

one gains good for oneself by causing harm to

others (rejection of community).

“cold sins”

Pride

Envy

Anger

Brief Overview

Defective Love

Love is directed to the other, but not

given in a proper measure.

“Lukewarm Love”

Sloth

Brief Overview

Excessive Love

Excessive “love” of the object that

destroys the capacity to truly love more

deserving objects.

“Hot sins”

Greed

Gluttony

Lust

ENVY

Webster:

“The painful or resentful

awareness of an

advantage enjoyed by

another, joined with a

desire to possess the

same advantage”

Envy is the pain

we feel when we

perceive another

person possessing

some quality,

object or status

we do not

possess.

“Envy grows naturally in relationships

between equals or apparent equals.”

-- Rhetoric

Chaucer:

“Sorrow at the prosperity of others, and

joy in their hurt.”

Envy is “sorrow over another’s good”

which we see as lessening our own value

or excellence, taking away from our

prestige.

“The worst part of success is to try

finding someone who is happy for

you.”

Bette Midler - comedian, actor and singer

Cain & Abel (Rubens)

The Prodigal Son (Rembrandt)

Prejudice

“The Seven Deadly Sins Today”

ANGER

ANGER

“of the seven deadly sins, anger is

the most pervasive, injurious to self

and others, and most responsible for

unhappiness and psychopathological

behavior.”

ANGER

Anger is first an emotion.

However, it becomes a deadly sin

when it becomes inordinate, i.e.

against reason, and is connected

with the desire for revenge, damage

or destruction against the perceived

cause of our hurt.

ANGER in ACTION

The refusal to. . .

Accept that life is not fair

Accept change

Accept our faults and idiosyncrasies and

those of others

We are not in control

I want to thank you, Lord

for being close to me so far this day.

With your help, I haven’t been impatient,

lost my temper, been grumpy, judgmental

or envious of anyone.

But I will be getting out of bed in a

minute, and I think I will really need your

help then. Amen.
