1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

What is the gospel that Paul preached? What is the gospel that the Corinthians received? What is the gospel that was saving the Corinthians? What is the gospel that the Corinthians held fast?

This is the gospel.

What was the name of the Seinfeld episode that told the story in reverse?

Overview of the gospel

- Judas betrayed Jesus.- Jesus was seized by the chief priests and scribes.- The chief priests and scribe declare Him guilty of calling Himself the Son of God.- He is handed over the Pilate and the civil authority for calling Himself King.- Pilate doesn’t find Him guilty, but he is afraid of the Jews calling for Him to be crucified.- Jesus is crucified on Golgotha.- Jesus’ body is buried in a tomb to confirm His death.- On the third day, the tomb is empty.- Jesus appears “in the flesh” to over 500 people to confirm His resurrection from the dead.- Jesus ascends to heaven.

Acts 2:22-24 (ESV) “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. The gospel is also taught to faithful Jews on the Day of Pentecost. Who led that lesson?

What would be the easy defense by the faithful Jews?

1 Cor 15:6 (ESV) Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.

1 John 1:3 (ESV) that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

We aren’t in the time and place to see the mighty works, wonders, and signs of Jesus, but we do have written eyewitness accounts. Would they be more powerful if we could actually talk with an eyewitness?

Healing the Paralytic

Page 17: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

Mark 2:1-2 (ESV) And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.

In a very busy Mark 1, Jesus gathered his apostles, healed a man with an unclean spirit, healed Peter’s mother-in-law, healed many who were sick or oppressed with demons, preached in Galilee, and healed a leper.

As He comes back to Capernaum, probably at the house of Peter and Andrew, people gather to hear Him preach.

How many show up?Why do you think they are there?

Page 18: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

Mark 2:3-4 (ESV) And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.

*

Page 19: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

Mark 2:5 (ESV) And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

*

Page 20: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

Mark 2:6-7 (ESV) Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

*

Page 21: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

Mark 2:8-9 (ESV) And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?

*

Page 22: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

Mark 2:10-12 (ESV) But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Who witnessed the miracle of Jesus healing the paralytic?

Healing the Blind Man

Page 25: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:1-5 (ESV) As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

*

Page 26: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:6-7 (ESV) Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.

*

Page 27: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:8-9 (ESV) The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.”

*

Page 28: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:13-17 (ESV) They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”

*

Page 29: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:18-22 (ESV) The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.)

*

Page 30: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:23-26 (ESV) So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

*

Page 31: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:27 (ESV) He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”

*

Page 32: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:28-29 (ESV) And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.”

*

Page 33: The Serial Gospel Jesus of Nazareth. 1 Cor 15:1-4 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which

John 9:30-33 (ESV) The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”

John 11:49-53 (ESV) But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.

Should the Jews he accused of killing Jesus have known who He truly was?

Luke 23:35 (ESV) And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” While Jesus hung on the cross, the rulers of the Jews taunted Jesus to save Himself from death like He had for others.

Instead of saving His life through a miracle, He saved us by dying for our sins.
