As Wrightsville United Methodist continues to grow, so do our needs. We’ve
hired two new people this summer who are contributing to our church in very
important ways. We’d like for you to know a little more about them and what
they do. First is Don Jenks, our new Building Superintendent. The second is
Madison Pleasant, who is our Communications and Marketing Assistant. Don
works Monday through Friday in the mornings and Madison is able to do the
bulk of her work from a remote office, so you won’t be able to find them in a
traditional office on Sunday mornings. Nevertheless, what they do is essential to
helping us make disciples for Jesus Christ.
1) Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Raleigh with my parents, Tracy and Tracey, and my brother, Taylor. As a family we have always been avid beachgoers and share the love to fish!
2) What is your church background? School background?
As a family, we attended First Presby-terian Church Downtown where my brother and I were very active in the youth program. I traveled on several mission trips and frequently volun-teered for community service acts with the youth program. I attended UNCW for undergrad with a degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing.
(continued on page 2)
1) When did you join the staff and what is your position?
I joined the staff in March 2018 as the Building Superintendent.
2) Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in the Bronx, N.Y. The youngest of five, with 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters.
3) Do you have any family?
Yes, I have a wonderful and lovely wife, Laura, of 32 years and 2 children. A daughter, Kaitlin, who lives in N.Y. and a son, Kyle, of Wilmington.
(continued on page 2)
Page 2
Did You Know?
Did you know that when you can’t be here on Sunday, or would like to lis-ten to a service again, that there are
two ways you can do that?
1. Go to our website at www.wrightsvilleumc.org.
2. Under “Worship” click on “Sermons”
3. Scroll down and find the date/title of the sermon and click on “Listen Now”.
4. When it comes up, click on the ►, wait for it to download and you’ll be ready to listen!
Or, you can...
...fill out a Sermon Request Form in the
tourquoise plastic container outside of
the front office. It will take a week or
two, but check back and you’ll get a CD
of the requested week’s sermon.
(continued from page 1)
I was a member of the Chi Omega Fraternity (technically a fraternity but it is a sorori-ty) where I gained life long friends! We spent time volunteering and supporting each other throughout out 4 years together. After spend-ing a semester in Florence, Italy in my senior year I knew I wanted to pursue higher educa-tion. Following undergrad I attended Savan-nah College Art and Design for my Masters of Arts in Luxury Brand Management.
3) How did you become interested in do-ing communications?
I studied and always had an interest in market-ing. However, I truly began my career in com-munications while in Savannah for grad school where I began working in the Marine Industry. I became the Marketing Manager of a globally known marine company, Release Marine. Fol-lowing graduation I had more members in the established marine industry contacting me for my services and to join their businesses, as well. That is what led me back to Wilmington. I created Maritime Communications in August of 2017 and have been working with all differ-ent types of businesses ever since. I primarily focus on social media, advertisements, graphics and websites.
4) Why did you feel called to work with us at Wrightsville UMC?
I felt a special bond with Wrightsville UMC when I heard Rev. Christina Turner preach at the Easter Sunrise Service. Recently my broth-er, sister-in-law and nephew have made this their church home. When I had the opportuni-ty to interview with the church it didn’t even feel like an interview. I was sitting in a room with 5 other women and felt as if I was talking with friends I had known for years.
5) When you are not working, what do you like to do?
When I am not working you can find me fish-ing on the boat at Mason’s Inlet or visiting my friends and family! My true passion is traveling and learning about all types of different peo-ple, cultures and religion. Traveling helps me feel more connected to myself and to God.
(continued from page 1)
4) What is your favorite thing about work-ing here?
The new experiences and the people I work with are outstanding. Also, the parishioners that I have come in contact with are friendly and helpful.
5) What do you do in your free time?
I like to spend time with my wife, family and friends. I am also a sports fan-baseball and football, especially.

Hello, Friends…
...I have been so lonesome lately– and I have felt so empty. I am sitting in the Narthex just hoping to see your smiling face and feel some coins dropping in! Love from your friend...the Pennies and Prayers Jar in the Narthex. All money collected goes to women and children who
are in need in our community.

This is going to be short and sweet! If you have EVER thought about becoming a Stephen Minister, NOW IS THE TIME. Training begins September 11, so time is short.
Our ranks have dwindled as several Stephen Ministers have had to step aside. The reasons vary from job pressures to family problems to a move out of town. Whatever the reasons, we miss these dedicated, caring people and we need several more to step into this important ministry.
We have a couple of Stephen Ministers who are caring for two Care Receivers. We don’t usually ask them to serve but one at a time but we can’t turn people away because we are short of Stephen Ministers.
Males-please, we need you! Females-everyone who has stepped aside is female so we desperately need you. You know what we do. We meet with our Care Receivers (usually once a week for about an hour) and listen to their story. We listen without judgement and without trying to “fix” them. We offer Christian Care Giving for those who are broken and need support without judgement-compassion and caring without demands.
Generally, friends and family have an agenda when you have problems and try to promote that agenda to fix the situation. Stephen Ministers have no agenda other than listening and caring for their care receiver.
Again, if you have ever thought about it, please take action. Call Janis Norris at 509-9608, Beth Perry at 231-2369 or Martha Brenner at 319-7808.

College Student in the Family?
If you have a college student in the family, College Connection and the United
Methodist Women want to know!
We’d love to be in touch with them throughout the year.
Please email current address to:
Thanks!
Page 10
What a great summer for our first ever “College Connection!”
“College Connection” was created as a way to keep our youth connected even after they enter college. This summer we offered four “College Connection” events using our marina as our outdoor meeting space and our boats as a way to get our college youth connected.
Marty and I have three children of our own, two who are still in college and one who recently graduated from college. We know first hand how important it is for our kids to stay connected to other young people of faith and to invite others to join. We also know how important it is for our college-age kids, and the college students in our church and our community, to know the WUMC family cares about them and is here for them.
From a beautiful sunset cruise to boating out to Masonboro Island for a bonfire and smores, we have enjoyed using our God-given resources to provide the boats and the space to host “College Connection.” Our last event was retrieving our crab pots from Lollipop Bay and bringing them back to the docks to steam.
Please help us spread the word about “College Connection!” As part of the body of WUMC, we want to stay connected to our college youth, and help them stay connected to one another during their college years. We will be planning more events throughout the year, and next summer, as we work to grow this college ministry.
If you would like for us to stay connected with your college kids, or other college students you may know, or if you are a college student and want to participate in future events with other college students, please contact Marty and me at 919-889-4777 or email [email protected] or [email protected]. We will add you to our group list and keep you informed all year long!
A special thanks to our fellow-WUMC members, Donna and Jerome Pinckney, who not only have become good friends to Marty and me, but who really stepped up and partnered with us on this new ministry. We especially loved Jerome’s homemade ice cream at our events!
