Invent Our Future!

Math - Wernet: For the past week we’ve been solving simple algebra equations using our four basic operations.Wernet/Zampini: With Coach Wernet we are working on statistics and displays of stats. With Mrs. Zampini, we are continuing our study of Geometry and looking at 3D figures.Zampini: Pre-Algebra: We are looking at plane geometry this week and next. We will be moving into Formulaic Geometry next.

ELA - We took on the hot topic of “SNOW DAYS” - to have or not to have, that is the question! After reading a series of articles providing information about each side, we collected the most compelling “evidence” and composed multi-paragraph argument essays. It will be exciting to see which side presents the strongest claims during our “Great Debate!”

*New material - Poetry study!

*Reminder - The first book response of the quarter is DUE FRIDAY, March 22nd!

Welcome to the 4th Quarter! Our new theme is “Invent Our Future.” We will be looking at how people

have created communities and invented new technologies to enhance their world. Each of us is an inventor waiting for our inspiration!

Social Studies - We have moved on from our study of the MICE countries to researching types of governments. Next week we will be jigsawing and sharing our research with our classmates.

Science - We are preparing ourselves to complete Earthworm dissections next week. After Spring break we will finish life science and move into Physics.

Important Dates:March 19-21 Dissections

March 23-31 Spring BreakApril 9 & 11: ELA AIR testing

April 18 & 25: Math AIR testingApril 19-22: Easter Break

Voting on the verbiage of our problem statement: “How can we as…”

Students brainstorm ideas.

It starts with an idea.

Collaborating on solvable problems in our world.

Mr. Schindler explains how his invention started as an idea, became a prototype, and is heading to market.

News and UpdatesGreece & Italy PBL Share Out: Tuesday March 19th from 10:00 to 11:30 (Rooms D/E)

All parents and/or relatives are welcome to attend!

MathMath 7:In Chapter 1, we have been working with tables, graphs, and ordered pairs. We are finding constant rates of change and slope. Finally, we will finish the chapter by looking at direct variation. Next, we will begin our study of geometry!

Pre-Algebra:Last week we finished our study of equations and inequalities. We have since moved on to studying probability. We began with the probability of simple events, such as rolling a 4 or 6 on a number cube and so forth. We are also studying the difference between theoretical and experimental probability. We use these theoretical probabilities to help predict what to expect given a certain number of trials in our experiments of flipping a coin, rolling dice, and spinning spinners.

Math 8:Students learned how to reflect, rotate, translate and dilate a figure on the coordinate plane. They are able to perform these transformations without graphing. Students also demonstrated master of performing a sequence of multiple transformations. Next week, they will be working with finding the volume of 3D figures.

Algebra I:Students know four ways to find the solutions of a quadratic function: quadratic formula, finding the roots, completing the square, and factoring. They also can predict the number of solutions by using the discriminant. Now students are learning how to use a table to determine if a function is linear, exponential, or quadratic.

ELA Argumentative reading passages and writing were still the focus of these last few weeks. Students completed a “research challenge” to visually represent their assigned section of the argumentative essay. After the presentations students played a Kahoot review game. This week students are applying their knowledge of the argumentative essay by completing the district 3rd quarter writing assessment. The prompt required students to support their stance on dancing competitions based off of 2 reading passages.

Social Studies We are studying Christianity this chapter and how

the Roman Empire played a role in the spread of its beliefs. We began the chapter by learning about Judaism in the Roman Empire, before we delve deeper and study what is generally agreed to be known about Jesus of Nazareth and the growth of Christianity. We analyze the five main events that helped steer the development of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Lastly, we studied how Christianity organized itself in the early church.

ScienceStudents are learning about weather. Students made a snowstorm, tornado and a rainstorm in a bottle. They also made a cloud in a bottle and a thunderstorm in a plastic shoebox. Students learned about weather instruments, fronts, and pressure system. They also can determine the difference between weather and climate. Next students will be exploring the concept of climate change.

PBL/Engineering We are ready to wrap up our latest PBL!!! Students are currently finalizing their presentations for our presentation of learning session on TUESDAY MARCH 19th from 10:00 to 11:30am in rooms D/E. Students working with Coach Legerski on vein finders are making progress on the electrical component. Some groups have fully functioning lights right now!

This is a connection to our Solar & Wind PBL which we have just started. The focus on this paper is persuasive techniques, audience, organization, editing and revising.

SOCIAL STUDIES● Students will be taking their District

S.L.O Test this month. ● Students are working in centers to work

on Jacksonian Era.Listed below are the stations students have been working on:

●Station #1: Nearpod on Spoils System.●Station #2: Postcard on Indian Removal

Act and Trail of Tears.●Station #3: Password on the National

Bank and Tariff of Abominations.●Station #4: Table on American System.

SCIENCE ● We wrapped up lessons 5.1-5.3.● Students can:

○ Differentiate the terms mitosis and meiosis; Asexual and Sexual Reproduction.

○ Differentiate Asexual and Sexual Reproduction.

○ Explain how traits are inherited.■ Completed a Trait analysis lab

creating an offspring based on chance.

■ We extracted DNA from a strawberry and observed it under a microscope.

● We started our PBL combing classes with ELA!

Algebra

● Completed the Q3 Benchmark on Thursday● Right now we are in the middle of Chapter

9 and are working with Quadratics Functions. Students are using factoring and methods such as “completing the square” and “vertex form” to find the solutions to quadratics.

● Next quiz will be Wednesday or Thursday of next week!

Geometry● Completed the Q3 Benchmark on Thursday● We are working on Chapter 12 (Circles).

Students are using many properties of triangles and lines to solve problems involving circles.

● Next quiz will be Wednesday or Thursday of next week!

Math 8● Completed the Q3 Benchmark on Friday.● We finished working on the Pythagorean

Theorem and Distance on Wednesday.● We will be working on Translations next

week.● Next quiz will be on Thursday or Friday next
