UPDATE: We have earned an additional $392.50 towards our goal.

Elementary students received a special dinosaur collection sheet last week. If they return them according to the directions, they will earn a flexi dinosaur made in our Fab Lab. Middle School students may participate, as well. They can pick up a challenge sheet and participate, too! Last school year, we earned $483.80 for our school from Box Tops!. This school year, our goal is to earn $1,000.00. Our first semester check was for $511.00. With your continued help, we can reach the mark! For more information on Box Tops, including a list of participating products, go to BTFE.com. Be sure to sign up as a member (it’s free!) so you can check out our school’s earnings details and get access to coupons and bonus offers. Thanks for your [email protected]**Box Tops can be sent in at any time during the school year.September: grades 3 & 8 Total raised by both grades is $205.10October: grades 4 & 7 Total raised by both grades is $239.00December: Grades 5 & 6 raised a total of $188.90 !

Invent Our Future!

Math - Wernet: Our current focus of study will be expressions and touching into some introductory algebra.Wernet/Zampini: With Coach Wernet we are working on probability and data analysis. With Mrs. Zampini, we are continuing our study of Geometry and looking at scale and similar figures.Zampini: Pre-Algebra: We are cruising through chapter 5: rates and proportional reasoning, including similar figures. We should be finishing up this unit next week with a test. Next stop: Percents!

ELA - We finished reading our 3rd quarter literature circle novels, and we are starting our post-reading extension activities. We will be building plot structures, making text-to-world connections, and designing & creating a FAB LAB product using the 3-D printer, BN20, laser, or t-shirt press. These creative pieces will all be showcased during group presentations...stay tuned!

*Reminder - The literature circle presentation will serve as the 2nd book response this quarter. Continue reading independently, as the 3rd book response will be due Monday, March 4.

Welcome to the 2nd Semester! Our new theme is “Invent Our Future.” We will be looking at how people

have created communities and invented new technologies to enhance their world. Each of us is an inventor waiting for our inspiration!

Social Studies - The beginning of the quarter has been a focus on our M.I.C.E. countries but with a look to their modern sides, still looking at each country through the G.R.A.P.E.S lens. Quizzes have been given on Egypt and Iraq. We are working through modern India now and working towards China in the next week or so.

Science - Mrs. Zampini is guiding the students as they look at life science. This week we concluded our study of microscopes and began our study and researching of cells. Over the next 2 weeks, we will be researching and sharing our knowledge on cell parts. We are also working on a PBL in which students are asked to think like bioengineers and design a model membrane with a flow rate of 20-30mL of water flow in 24 hours.

News and UpdatesFun in February has begun! If your student choose not to participate in the theme day, they are expected to wear their school uniform. Fun in February Calendar

MathMath 7:We continue to work with percents from CH 2. OUr newest topics include percent of change, percent markup, and percent discount. Success in the second half of this chapter relies on the use of a calculator. Please check with your child if they have a CALCULATOR. Many do not. Moving forward, we are working with values that are not mental-math friendly. To help us along with the steps needed to complete more complex, multi-step problems, we will rely on the calculator.

Pre-Algebra:We have just finished our chapter on algebraic expressions and will use what we have learned to advance our understanding of equations. Chapter 7 focuses on both equations and inequalities. To start, we will be solving multi-step equations and writing our own equations to represent real-world situations.

Math 8:Math 8 students are learning how to solve systems of equations. They can solve systems by graphing, substitution, and by elimination. Students are becoming masters of the word problems!

Algebra I:Students are studying polynomials. They can identify a polynomial’s degree and name it based on the number of terms. Students can add and subtract polynomials. They know how to multiply polynomials using the distributive property, making a table, and using FOIL. Next week, students will learn how to factor polynomials.

ELA Students have completed writing their constellation myths and will be sharing them with classmates after we finish investigating the questions

for our PBL. This week we are taking a deeper dive into topics that pertain to our latest PBL. Students answered the questions: 1) What is overtourism & what are its effects? 2) What are the components of an excellent business plan? After presentations, we will be formulating a business plan format that will be used for the PBL project.

Social Studies We have studied in the past couple weeks the

rise of the Roman Republic, how it was run, and

how it ultimately fell. We also learned how

Rome’s first Emperor, Augustus, came into

power. Rome had many emperors following

Augustus. Some ruled fairly and some harshly,

though none were perfect. To further understand

the effects of an emperor’s rule on the Roman

Empire, we created columns of our own to

represent the rule of Nero, Trajan, Hadrian, and

Augustus.

Science

Students are wrapping up the chemistry unit.

Students know the five things that indicate a

chemical reaction. They have explored chemical

reactions through elephant toothpaste and

mixing coke and milk. Students explored the

concentration of solutions and are able to

identify a mixture as a solution, colloid, or a

suspension using a flashlight.

PBL/Engineering We have kicked off our newest PBL! With the help of retired W-E Schools teacher and former travel agent, Roy McMullen, students will propose business plans that will help reduce overtourism, but provide a vacation experience where customers may experience the ancient ruins, history, and modern culture of Italy or Greece without leaving the United States. Students moving forward with vein finder designs are now working with Coach Legerski each day.

8th GRADE

ELA“The best laid schemes of mice and men go often

askew”This comes from the poem, “To a Mouse” which students analysed for meaning and its link to the novel, “Of Mice and Men”. Students also identified similar themes which they found in both, and wrote about how this theme was developed in both. We are now getting into persuasive writing.

SOCIAL STUDIESStudents were given artifact boxes filled with objects (old and new) that represented events, ideas, and people from 1800 to 1820. They discussed and inferred what each object represented, then did some more reading to confirm or adjust their ideas. They also mapped out territory that the U.S. gained as a result of treaties and purchases. This will lead into an essay where students identify which treaty or purchase was most beneficial to our country and why.

SCIENCE ● Great Start on Unit 6● Students can:

○ Explain the direct correlation to the shape of beak to food source availability in an area.

■ Completed Beak Lab activity.○ Explain the 4 parts of natural selection.

■ Give detail on exponential growth through green pepper seed lab.

○ Describe Darwin, Lamarck, and Malthus and their contributions to Life Science.

● Next Week:○ Looking into common structures, DNA, &

embryology.

Algebra● This week we worked with Coach

Palmer’s science class for a period to create exponential equations that simulated population growth of green peppers.

● Coming up… working through Chapter 8 which covers Polynomials and Factoring.

Geometry ● Currently we are working on Chapter

6, Polygons. ● Students are doing quite a bit of

independent learning during the class period and checking in with Coach Boerner when needed.

Math 8● This week we took out Systems of

Equations Test.● We are moving onto angles in the next

Chapter.

All Classes are now using MathXL!

SPANISH

Hola, We are continuing with our storytelling, with Question and Answering as well as learning new Verbs each week and how to use them in sentence structures; such as ser/estar verb and to say where people, places and things are located.

We will also be learning about the very different things done in Spain as the culture is represented.

8t Grade Unit 1

Documentation, documentation, documentation! There is a strong emphasis being placed on this concept as the students plan and write their applications. 1.8 Build a body is underway and going well. This will likely take us through next week and then an assessment will be given on Unit 1.

7th Grade (code.org)

The interactive card is being graded right now and a rubric with grade is being returned so parents can look for this. We are a couple of weeks away from the big project of students making their own games.
