Derek Jefferson had always wanted to open up his own tattoo parlor. He first started tatting at a place called“Social Grind” which was a shop located on 10th street at the time. After that Derek moved to the Music Box. Heand another guy named Tim were two of the first people to ever start doing tattoos at the Music Box.

March 6th 1995 Derek opened up his own shop, Screamin Mimi Tattoo Par-lor, on McMasters and was at that location for 10 years. “Opening your ownshop is every tattooist main goal” Derek says, “It gives you more artisticfreedom and gives opportunity to make choices to run things the way youwant.”

In 2005, they moved Screamin Mimi to 601 S. Prospect on Route 66. Whenthey first found the place it was an older Duplex that they converted into thebuilding that it is now. “6th Street was the best move” says Jefferson. Every-

thing from the red exterior paint andmetal design work on the outside to theclean, Zen-like interior, filled with Bud-dha statues and foreign artwork, shows the personality of the shop and it’sartists.

When Derek was a child he was really into skateboard art, which is evidentwhen you see the collage of skateboards on the walls of his tattoo space. Hislove of artistic expression displayed on skateboards led him to get his firsttattoo at the age of 15 and carry that over into a career as a tattoo artist. Hewent to Tascosa High School and then proceeded to attend Amarillo Collegeto become a Paramedic. The laid back, freedom filled life of a tattoo artist isquite different then Derek’s original path of being a Paramedic.

When Jefferson first started tattooing the “Tasmanian Devil” was that mostpopular icon. I asked him what was more popular these days and there arequite a few popularities. Tribals, names, and footprints from a birth certifi-cate. Stars seem to be pretty big with the female population right now.

“Good tattoos aren’t cheap and cheap tattoos aren’t good” If you want a piece of art, be patient, it is a process. Thebest tattoos are ones that have personal or sentimental meaning to you. If you have an idea of a personal piece ofartwork you would like to work with, you can leave a deposit, and one of the artist can draw up a sample of exactlywhat you are wanting.

At Screamin Mimi’s they have a com-bined experience of over 25 years.Derek has 16 years under his beltalone. If you are wanting to bookwith Derek be fore warned that thereis usually a 2 to 3 week waiting pe-riod for an appointment. Most of hiswork consists of back pieces andsleeves and multiple session type ofwork.

When you decide that you want toget a tattoo, do your research, golook at some portfolios and askquestions. A tattoo is a piece of art-work that you will have to live withthe rest of your life, so you want it tobe something you are proud of. Andone that is done by someone who isexperienced and cares about yourtattoo experience.

So come by Screamin Mimi, soak inthe atmosphere, look through theirportfolios and ask any questions at601 S. Prosper, 374-3009. They alsohave two piercers on staff if that issomething that you are more inter-ested in.

“What is your favorite musical? Cabaret? Oklahoma? Or perhaps Shakespeare is moreyour genre. Or, maybe you’ve dreamt of being on the stage yourself. If so, then West TexasA&M University’s Branding Iron Theatre is waiting for you.

The Branding Iron Theatre, located in the Fine Arts building on the WTAMU campus inCanyon, was first started in 1947 as a way to honour pioneer heritage. The first theatrewas located in the recreation hall for servicemen, and the first play was Shakespeare’s “AMidsummer Night’s Dream.” In 1959, the theatre was moved to the campus’ Old Fine ArtsBuilding on 23rd

Street. The BITstarted with opera, and evolved into mu-sicals as well as opera. The BIT’s first musical was“The King and I.”

Now housed in it’s current lo-cation, the theatre is celebratingthe University’s Centennial with themusical “Fiddler on the Roof“. Themusical will run for two weekends, and opens October 15. Royal Brantley,Department Head of Theatre and Dancesince 1984, will star as Tevia. Coinciden-tally, Brantley’s father, Royal L. Brantley wasDepartment Head of Music, and played theroll of Tevia in an earlier production of “Fiddleron The Roof“. Production and choreography for“Fiddler” are already in full swing, and all perform-ers are students or Theatre Majors.

The faculty includes not only Brantley, but Perry Crafton,Director of Theatre Program, Shawn Irish, Scenic and Light-ing Designer, John Landon, Technical Director, and AnneMedlock, Faculty Costume Design. Each have their Master ofFine Arts degrees.

The Branding Iron Theatre usually puts on 4-5 productions a year, but is only doing 4 this year. In November, they will put on “SightUnseen”, a production that is strictly student-produced. “Sight Unseen”will be performed in the Happy State Bank Theatre, which is a smallerstudio stage in the Fine Arts building. Shakespeare’s “12th Night” is sched-uled for February.

The theatre is not limited to just students of the Fine Arts, as several performersare not majors in the Fine Arts at all. Anyone may audition for a part, and if theydo well, then the part will go to them.

All performers are required to attend rehearsals, and practice is very important toeducation. Students learn the value of life lessons in real-world theatres, and they learn

how performing is handled in professional theatres. Many of the students go on to betheatre directors at other facilities after completing their studies at WTAMU. Some haveeven gone on to perform in Santa Fe and New Jersey.

October’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof” features 29 students on stage, approxi-mately 15 students backstage, and all students involved in the productions are under thesupervision of the directors. Students are expected to work well together, and each stu-dent visits one on one with faculty during the semester. They have to work as a team, orthey will not make it in the acting world. Networking is important, and this helps studentsget a foothold in the world of acting and stage production.

Brantley has worked professionally in regional theatre, and says New York and Broad-way are tough. He says being in theatre is the perfect environment for learning to deal

with rejection andaccepting rejection

is an important skill tolearn. “Theatre is the

collaborative art,”Brantley says. Theatre de-

grees prepare students forthe real world by teaching

communication, collaboration, attention to deadlines, public re-

lations, and experience with tech-nical skills.

Last year’s production of “Beauty andThe Beast” broke records for the Brand-

ing Iron by being the most successful showand selling out each night of production. The

play, “The Madness of King George” turnedout to be the sleeper hit of the year, enjoyed by

both students and the audiences. It sold out too,and was held in the Happy State Bank studio.

The faculty tries to keep student preferences in mind, selecting productions that students will be interested in.

They try to give exposure to different genres of stage pro-ductions to both audiences and students. All costumes are

designed and built to represent the time eras of the produc-tions. Students are encouraged to audition for the play “Texas”,

even though the Theatre Department isn’t directly affiliated with“Texas”. Crafton says they just “want the students to do something

in theatre during the summer“.

Productions are extra-curricular, and rarely pay for themselves. The BITis primarily funded through tuition revenue bonds, although the Harrington

Foundation contributed to the Fine Arts Complex, and Happy State Bankhas contributed as well.

Tickets for the musical are $15.00 each or $7 for senior citizens, and childrenunder 12. Students and faculty are not charged to attend. For more information,

contact the Branding Iron Theatre box office at 806-651-2804; Monday through Fri-day from 1pm to 5pm. Credit Cards not accepted. Visit www.wtamu.edu/academics/

bit-box-office.aspx for a full schedule of this year’s productions.

At West Texas A and M University in Canyon, there is an organization that is dedicatedto taking care of the University Mascot, Thunder X. Sean Burns, University Police Chief, oversees the Herdsmen, and acts as their advisor. The current membership in theHerdsmen is 15, including six prospects, according to Preston “PNut” Montgomery, current President of the organization.

The Herdsmen were f ormed October 15,1977, by Chris Black, Rick “Corny”Cornelison, and Weldon Trice, Dean ofMen. These men recognized that some-thing was needed to boost school spirit, and decided a live buffalo mascot wasjust the thing to do it. The first mascot,Thunder I, aka Lollipop, was donated byRJ Lee, owner of Amarillo’s Big TexanSteak House. And thus, a new traditionand organization was born. The origi-nal group grew to approximately fiftymen, who are considered the FoundingFathers of the Herdsmen Organization.

Because of Cornelison’s nick-name, the tradition of the members having nick-nameswas also started.

The current mascot, Thunder X is a 17 month old bull buffalo, and is kept at the pensat the Agriculture Education Center. Although small in stature, at 750 approximatelypounds, Thunder X is powerful, and must be worked with every day. Buffalo are intel-ligent animals and they are constantly learning. The Herdsmen have found the bestway to train is through positive reinforcement, and Thunder can tell an experiencedhandler from an inexperienced one. Thunder X came off Cook’s Bison Ranch in Indi-ana, and replaces Jack, who was retired last year.

Thunder is taken to every home game, and makes his opening run at the start of thegame, ahead of the WTAMU football team. Four Herdsmen are on the ropes, two onfront, and two on back. Thunder wears a special harness to attach the ropes to, and isrun around the field much to the delight of the crowd. During the game, Thunder andthe Herdsmen spend their time behind the south end zone of the Kimbrough MemorialStadium. He is also run after touch downs on the opposite end of the stadium, andduring half-time, if time allows. Because of NCAA rules, live mascots of any kind arenot allowed at Conference Games. They don’t take Thunder to away games, becauseof a lack of space to keep him before and after the games. Bef ore each game, theHerdsmen circle up in prayer for their safety, Thunder’s safety, and a good game.Thunder X travels several places throughout the semester, including parades inPlainview, Floydada, Petersburg, and the Homecoming Parade in Canyon.

Buffalo Thunder

This year’s Homecoming Parade is Saturday, October 10th at 11:00am along 4th Av-enue in Canyon. Thunder and the Herdsmen will be there, and this will give people achance to see him in action somewhere other than on the playing field. He will also beat the Homecoming game that evening.

Thunder also appears on Campus for Welcome Back week, when the new semestersbegin, Buff Branding, and NewStudent Orientation, as well asthe President’s home for a cook-out to welcome incoming Fresh-men in the Fall.

Foreman Justin “Beetle”Trammel’s main job is to keepan eye on who’s participating, keeping up with handling andthe body language of pros-pects. Since large, wild animalscan be easily distracted, rapidmovements are unsafe or loud, while slow deliberate movementis considered quiet. Montgom-

ery likens it to kids who use their “inside” or quiet voices, versus their “outside” orloud voices.

“It takes a lot of time on the members’ part to be out here,” explains Trammel, “andwhen (the members) spend a lot of time with Thunder, their body language improves.”Members are required to attend a weekly meeting, and wear their long sleevedHandler shirts at every event where the buffalo appears.

Practice with Thunder takes place each week, for two hours anevening depending on the buffalo’s attitude and energy level.Montgomery stresses the importance of being at prac-tice, saying if there’s no work, then there’s no play. The Herdsmen take excellent care of the mascot, andcan tell when he’s having a bad day. Trammel is incharge of deciding whether or not it’s a good dayto take Thunder out for appearances. Public safetycomes first, as does that of the buffalo. TheHerdsmen put their personal safety last, to as-sure that the buffalo and the public are not atrisk. The public is encouraged not to get tooclose to the buffalo during the games, to en-

sure their own safety.

Herdsmen rules state that no alcohol, smoking, or other unbecoming behavior isto be engaged in while the men are in their Herdsmen attire. No alcohol is

allowed at any Herdsmen event, and no Herdsmen-affiliated attirecan be worn to any establishment where alcohol is the main

revenue.

Members who have proved themselves hard working, dedicated, and served at least two years as a Herdsmencan apply for Alumni status at the end of their time. Allthe Herdsmen enjoy their job and role in caring forand working with Thunder X. “Running the games is areward; it’s icing on the cake.” Says Montgomerywith a grin.

And for the fans at the games, it’s a good way tosee an icon of the Texas Panhandle and hishandlers showing their spirit for the team.
