SNOWREMOVAL
4 - Marshall, MO - The Saline County Citizen, Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013
(NAPSA)—If you or someoneyou know is on blood thinnersand tired of traveling to a clinicfor a clotting time test, you maybe relieved to learn about amuch more convenient option:testing yourself at home, on yourfingertip. Many people with atrial fibrilla-
tion (an irregular heartbeat, known as “AFib”) or other condi-tions that can lead to blood clotshave to be on lifelong treatmentwith anticoagulant medicationssuch as Coumadin (warfarin) tohelp “thin” their blood. Since diet, stress and other factors makepatients react differently to war-farin, they need to have their clot-ting time tested regularly. Thatcan involve a lot of time and hassleto travel to a lab, clinic or doctor’soffice. The easy alternative—testing
less often than your doctor recom-mends—is not a good or safeoption. Checking your clotting timeat regular intervals allows yourdoctor to make sure you are on theright dose of warfarin: Too low andit might not effectively preventclots; too high and your blood couldget too thin. Both can lead to seri-ous complications, such as a strokeor uncontrolled bleeding. So it’s essential to have a regu-
larly scheduled test that measuresthe time it takes for your blood toclot (Prothrombin Time, oftenreported as an International Nor-malized Ratio; hence the moniker“PT/INR test”).The real question is: where?
Convenience at your fingertipsThe traditional way to get a
PT/INR test is to have your blooddrawn at a clinic or doctor’s officeand sent to a lab, which may takeseveral days. Now, however, there’sPatient Self-Testing (PST). You cantest at home, at work or whereveryou happen to be, right on your fin-gertip. You simply prick your fin-ger, place a drop of blood on a teststrip and wait about a minute for asmall handheld meter to give youthe result.Your health care team will still
be closely involved with your careand anticoagulation treatment. You call in your results or enterthem online right after you test, and you make office visits asdirected by your doctor to monitoryour testing and make therapyadjustments. But PST offers so much more
flexibility and convenience that itcan make a world of difference inhow you feel about testing. In onestudy, 77 percent of the warfarinpatients preferred the convenienceof self-testing over testing at aclinic.Studies also show that patients
who self-test tend to test moreoften, so they stay in the propertherapeutic range longer than
patients who are monitored lessoften by a doctor. The longer youstay in range, the lower yourchances of having an adverseevent, like a stroke or even death.
Is PST right for me?If you’re considering PST for
yourself or someone you care for, talk with your doctor to make sureit’s a good fit for you and yourlifestyle. You should be motivatedto test, physically able to performthe test (after training), andresponsible to follow your doctor’sorders for how often to test andhow to report your results. The next step will be for your
doctor to write a prescription andconnect you with a PST serviceprovider that can supply the meterand the necessary face-to-facetraining from a certified profes-sional. The provider can also helpyou with ordering supplies, report-ing results and filing insurancepaperwork, and can even send yougentle reminders to help you stayon your testing schedule and keepyour therapy on track. The costs associated with self-
testing may be reimbursablethrough Medicare or a privateinsurer, depending on your diagno-sis and medical coverage.Research shows that nearly two
out of three AFib patients who arenot testing at home don’t even knowit’s an option. So friends and familycan be a big help by sharing thisinformation. To request a PSTpatient information kit or to learnmore about potential coverage forPST through Medicare or privateinsurance, call (888) 601-0229 orvisit www.TestWithCoaguChek.com.
