James performs on the stage of the Harold L. Lickey Auditorium atthe 2013 Bob James Jazz Festival. James not only has performed on that stage during occasional hometown concerts overthe years, but he performed there as a music student of HaroldLickey's when the building was Marshall High School.

both for more than 50years. The class will startat 9 a.m. in Eckilson-Mabee Theatre.
Following the masterclass is a clinic for areamusicians who want tolearn about or learn moreabout playing jazz. Theclinic begins at 10 a.m. inMorrison Fine Arts Centeron the Missouri ValleyCollege campus. Registra-tion in advance is re-quired.
"Marshall has a finetradition of nurturing mu-sical aspirations," Crumpsaid. "Bob James is onlyour most famous example. His parents, and his firstteacher, Sister Mary Eliza-beth, of Mercy Academy, probably had no ideawhere music might takehim or what he might ac-complish, but they sawdesire and talent andhelped it flourish. The jazzfestival in his honor is ourattempt to continue thattradition."
Every year, musicianswho got their start in Mar-shall take the stage anddemonstrate the result ofthe community's commit-ment to music education.Past performers includeClarence Smith, Joe Athon,Mike Henderson, D.J.Sweeney and KevinFrazee. This year, GaryCoble will bring his popu-lar blues/funk band, SaltyDawg's Cold Sweat toMarshall.
The Saturday concertat Bueker Middle School'sHarold L. Lickey MemorialAuditorium, 565 S. OdellAve., will begin with a per-formance by the Clinic All-Stars, those participantsin the clinic who wish toshow what they'velearned during the day.
After Salty Dawg's set,the great Latin jazz bandfrom K.C., Sons of Brasil, led by Stan Kessler, willperform. They will bejoined by special guestBob James to perform afew of his classic numbers. This will be James' thirdappearance at the festival.
"One of the most con-sistent comments we getfrom festival patrons is'More Bob James!'" Crumpsaid. "It's a real treat to ex-perience his wonderfulmusic without having totravel to New York orJapan. We're very gratefulfor his participation in thefestival."
Doors open at 5:30p.m. ($25 per seat).
