Saying Grace… ….from Roy

By the grace of God, Saint Mark has had a remarkable ministry in Montgomery County and around the world. Located on land that was once a site along the underground railroad that slaves traveled by night toward the light of freedom, Saint Mark has been an outpost of God’s kingdom in the world. In its early years, under the leadership of founding pastor Jim Macdonell the congregation made a compelling witness for the dignity and equality of all people, supporting that conviction with myriad social justice ministries throughout the county that touched countless people. That legacy of ministry continues fifty years later as the congregation is still known for its strong social mission and welcoming of all people into a vibrant community of worship and service. Our music director Jeff Doenges continues to expand our capacity for congregational singing and is leading our choir to be stronger than ever in their worship participation. Over these fifty years, members have also extended the call to compassion traveling to Mexico and India, Kenya, Cameroon and Haiti while also supporting other global mission efforts of the Presbyterian Church USA and others mission agencies. All of this has occurred alongside a Christian Education ministry nurturing youth in the core values of the gospel. Under the leadership of Associate Pastor LeAnn

Hodges we have a strong youth and family ministry integrating spiritual growth with service. Even though we are located in an established neighborhood people are still coming from all over the metro DC area to join our membership; and that is quite remarkable in the current climate. Our membership is increasingly diverse with people bringing gifts from all over the world. As we

enter our fiftieth year, the congregation is thriving

as a leader in the Presbytery in environmental

stewardship efforts as well as displaying

congregational life that integrates vital worship

and service. In this fiftieth year, it’s exciting to envision our sanctuary fully renovated so that we can return there as soon as possible.

The letter to the Ephesians encourages the Church to become, through union with Christ, a dwelling place for God. While this is not referring to a building, but rather the mystical body of Christ, I can’t help but believe sanctuaries are meant to express such union. That is why the renovation of the sanctuary is so highly anticipated by everyone. The Sanctuary Enhancement team is hard at work with Kerns and Associates on the timeline to begin construction, while the Capital Campaign team is developing the plans for raising funds to complete the project. Indeed, it’s a very exciting, challenging time at Saint Mark! Fifty years! Let’s make it a great 2011, praising God who changes lives.

The Saint Mark Annual Meeting is January 30 at Noon!

Adult Education

Islam and Its Teachings

A Saint Mark 9:30 Sunday Morning Adult Class January 16 through February 27 (no class on February 6) presented by the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan

Washington Rev. Dr. Clark Lobenstine, Executive Director

Join your fellow Saint Markers to learn more about this great world religion, its historical and cultural background, the basics of its faith, a look at its main scripture the Qur’an, its beliefs, and its ethical and moral stances. One session will focus on the role of women in Islam. Another will raise the question: Is Islam a religion of peace or terrorism? Still another will lift up Islam’s and Christianity’s respective attitudes toward “the other” – how are other religions viewed? Dr. Lobenstine will be assisted in many of the sessions by Muslims, including a Muslim woman.

Here at last is an opportunity for us Saint Markers to become better informed about this faith community that shares common space with us in our neighborhoods and in our world. We may learn to our surprise how Islam and Christianity share also many common beliefs, stories and yearnings for a world which proclaims the SHALOM - SALAAM of God!

A Successful Cookie Walk in December

We hope that all of you will find an opportunity to serve on one of Saint Mark's many ministries

at 11:00, following the 9:30 service and fellowship time, on the first Sunday of the

month. There are other activities, including a Christian Education class, occurring at the

same time. Please join us!

Youth Recycling Project

What could be better than going green and earning money? Last year, the youth collected old electronics and kept things out of the landfills while providing much needed funds for the their summer mission trips. So despite some competition from area high schools, we are going to try it again. Talk to your friends and neighbors to help collect donations. Flyers will be distributed to remind you of what is accepted. And watch for the distribution boxes in the coat closet and the atrium. If you have any questions, call Carol Henig.

Sanctuary Enhancement Update Rebuilding Together has been a successful and popular outreach mission of Saint Mark which is changing lives in measurable and concrete ways. And now we are embarking on a great mission here at home as we work on repairing, rebuilding and renewing our sanctuary and

ourselves. The work of the Sanctuary Enhancement Committee is proceeding apace through the planning and permitting process, and the next step of a Capital Campaign to proceed over a three year period has been authorized by Session. A core group has been formed under the leadership of co-conveners Teresa Larson and Jon

Spargur and includes Emmett

Barkley, Teddy Ferguson,

Whet Hutton, Jerry Lowrie and Gerald Aldridge. This team is very excited about the Sanctuary and will be reaching out to other Saint Markers to participate in specific campaign tasks over the next few months and looks forward to the start of rebuilding in early summer.

What an opportunity for all of us to truly be “Praising God and Changing Lives!”

Parish Life

Annual Meeting and Luncheon

On Sunday, January 30, the Parish Life Ministry invites you to a light lunch after the 11:00 worship service as we gather for the Annual Meeting. The PLM will be providing “finger food” (sandwiches, wraps, cookies, etc.) for this event. It will not be a potluck as in past years, but if you would like to bring something it will be welcome! Please contact Lyn Hill at [email protected] if you plan to bring something. We look forward to seeing you at this important yearly event in the life of our congregation.

Photo Directory

If you were not able to have your portrait taken by Olan Mills Photographers, you may submit a 4 X 6 photo for inclusion in the directory. We are allowed a certain number of free submissions, but after that number is reached, there is a $5 charge for each additional photo. If you have questions please contact Lyn Hill at the above address. Also, if you are feeling creative and would like to help with planning the design/layout of the directory, please contact Lyn. We would love your help!

Need Help?

Saint Mark and your deacons are looking for ways to help unemployed or underemployed members of the congregation during the current recession. To this end, beginning in February, Deacon Ward Tietz will help members with the writing and editing of resumes and job letters. Contact him at [email protected] for details.

Local Mission

Mercy Clinic Dedication

Pastor Howard was on hand to dedicate Mercy Clinic’s expansion on January 13, 2011. With help from a $50,000 grant from Saint Mark, the new 1,800 square foot addition was completed in November 2010 and provides more functional space for eligibility screening of patients, a larger room for Lifestyle Education and Diabetes programs, and administrative offices. The new space also allows repurposed rooms in the original clinic to revert to their original uses as work stations for nurses, educators, and patient navigators, a physicians’ study, and a clinic kitchen for volunteer and staff use.

But don’t just take our word for it! Visit the Clinic! And better yet, spend some time there volunteering! There are many opportunities – and a great need – for Saint Mark to get involved and see God’s work being done every single day. Please see Barbara Welsh or Dick

Pavlin for details.

Also, save the date for the Mercy 5K Health Run on May 21, 2011. We’ll be putting together a group of Saint Mark runners, so better start your training now!

Dine Out for a Good Cause at

Thanksgiving in February on

February 22

Interfaith Works’ annual Thanksgiving in February fundraiser will take place on February 22. You can help fight hunger in our community! Simply take your friends, family,

coworkers, etc. and dine out at a participating restaurant of your choice who will donate up to 20% of their February 22 receipts. Participating restaurants can be found at www.thanksgivinginfebruary.org. Saint Mark has made a reservation at Mosaic Cuisine and Café (186 Halpine Road, Rockville, in Congressional Plaza) for 6:30 PM. If you’d like to spend an evening in fellowship with your church family AND eat out for a good cause, sign up in the Atrium or contact Kay

Update on the Scotland Scholarship

Saint Mark’s Scotland Scholarship fund was established in 1997 in honor of the Reverend Dr. James G.

Macdonell, the founding pastor of our church, on the occasion of his retirement. Each year, the fund gives financial help to students residing in the Scotland Community who have college aspirations. This year, the Scholarship Committee is busily working (so far) with three Churchill High School Seniors who want to attend college next year. We are looking for volunteers to guide the students through scholarship applications and the FAFSA process. These students are well-deserving young people who would not go to college without our help. Please call Caroline Touchton at [email protected] if you can get involved. No Experience necessary!

Small Time Commitment! Flexible Hours!

Even more importantly, Funds to replenish the nearly

depleted scholarship fund are needed. As many of you know, text books alone can cost thousands of dollars each year! And most of our students’ families are not able to contribute financially to the cost of college education. Our small contribution helps fulfill these students’ dreams to attend college. If you can donate to a worthy cause, tax deductible contributions can be sent to the church with a note indicating that they are for the Scotland Scholarship Fund. Please call Caroline if you have any questions. She will be happy to explain the history of Saint Mark’s relationship with the Scotland Community and the students’ need funding for college.

Serve God, Serve One Another: Ways to Get

Involved in Local Mission

In addition to helping out at Mercy Health Clinic or lending a hand to Scotland Seniors who want to go to college, there are many ways you can get involved in Saint Mark’s Local Mission Ministry. One way –

consider becoming Local Mission’s new convener! Saint Mark’s Local Mission Team is looking for someone to bring us together and assemble us and our ministry efforts! If the work Saint Mark does to care for its neighbors makes you come alive, we need you! The Local Mission Convener works closely with the Local Mission Elder to keep the pulse of all of the service ministries we lead and to set meeting agendas. Talk to Barbara

Welsh ([email protected]) for more information!

Thank You, Tina!

A special thank you goes out to Tina Moulton for all of the hard work as she has done as Local Mission Convener over the last couple of years. Tina has resigned her position as of January. Our Team, and our ministry, has flourished because of your leadership! God Bless You!

An Open Letter to Bread for the World Covenant

Congregations from David Beckmann, President, Bread for the World

Thanks to you and other Bread for the World members, we’ve achieved more for hungry people in 2010 than ever before! I am deeply grateful for your activism and support, and I know that you join me in gratitude to God. Just look at all we’ve accomplished together this year: • The tax package Congress passed last week

extended tax credits for the working poor—the goal of our 2010 Offering of Letters. While most people have reservations about various aspects of the tax package, the extension of the tax credits will keep more than 1 million children out of poverty next year. It will provide $10 billion to low-income working families. That’s twice the value of all the aid that U.S. food charities will be able to mobilize next year. • Just days earlier, Congress finally passed the child

nutrition act, which will improve the quality of school lunches and strengthen nutrition programs for low-income children. The bill authorizes $450 million a year for 10 years, the largest-ever increase for child nutrition programs. • Bread for the World has supported and shaped the

U.S. government’s world hunger initiative—an international mobilization of investment in poor farmers and malnourished children. • Bread for the World’s grassroots members convinced

Congress to move legislation to reform U.S. foreign assistance. The Obama administration is now moving forward with reforms that emphasize development and poverty reduction; a transformed U.S. development agency; accountability; and responsiveness to the priorities of people in recipient countries. Bread for the World’s 2011 Offering of Letters will push to give reform the force and durability of bipartisan legislation. • Finally, the World Food Prize* has given us an

unprecedented opportunity to communicate Bread’s message. We have reached more than 500 million people through television, radio, social media, online, and print publications. As I look back at what Bread for the World’s members have achieved this year, I am struck that we have indeed changed history for hungry people. Thank you! Our work is not over. In the first months of 2011, many politicians will be pushing to cut programs for poor people, claiming that this will be good for the economy. In fact, programs for poor people are a small fraction of

the federal budget, and helping struggling families get on their feet is important to economic recovery for all of us. May Christ’s loving presence among us inspire us to do what we must to get our country more serious about hunger and poverty than it has ever been before. Grace and peace *Note - awarded to David Beckmann in 2010

Saint Mark Book Lovers 2010-2011

Book Lovers, the Saint Mark book discussion group, meets the 3rd Monday evening of the month at 7:30 in the parlor. Our list of books to discuss for the coming year is below and is also on our website. Join us!

February 21: The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery and Alison Anderson

March 21: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

April 18: Sarah’s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay

May 16: Triumph & Hope: Golden Years With The Peace Corps in Honduras by Barbara E. Joe

June 20: Potluck to choose books for 2011-2012 New Members in the Emerging Leaders in Voice program.

Choir News

Beginning at Christmas, we have two additional singers in the Emerging Leaders in Voice program: Alexander Xourias, who is a high school senior planning on majoring in musical theater in college, and Jay Besch, a junior in high school. Both attend Walt Whitman High School. They join the two singers who entered the program last fall: Caitlin Stephens and Lizzie Bartlett. This program creates an opportunity for young people to earn funds for contributing their voices to the SMPC choir activities. Since young musicians need to pay for their lessons, this is a way to increase the availability of funds for such activities, all the while bringing younger voices to the choir, and expanding the size and strength of our choir in general.

Global Mission Annual Report: Becky and

Eric Hinderliter, PCUSA

mission co-workers,

Lithuania

The year 2010 was divided into two parts: one doing ‘mission

interpretation’ in the USA and one part back in Lithuania as teachers. While in the US Becky and were guests at 30 Presbyterian churches. This included seven sermons and six presbytery meetings. We were mission advisory delegates to the 219th General Assembly in Minneapolis. It was good for us to reconnect with fellow Presbyterians. We are refreshed when we visit supporting churches like you folks at Saint Mark Presbyterian. Warm Christian hospitality is virtue that we experience with great joy. We enjoyed our time with all of you last spring.

The year 2010 was one of personal milestones. Psalm 90:12 advises, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” We have now been at LCC for ten years. On our return to Lithuania we quickly assumed our role as classroom teachers. The students were anxiously awaiting us. Becky had 118 students in accounting; Eric had the same number spread over four subjects. We helped a number of students with admission to graduate school and to new jobs. Becky was recognized with an award for her teaching excellence at the end of the semester. We also resumed teaching at the men’s prison. These men were even more anxious to see us. They most want to know that someone on the outside cares about them and is waiting for them, as they easily imagine that they will be forgotten.

Our present appointment with the PC(USA) runs through 2013. Our hope and dream is to finish out our working lives as mission co-workers. This means we hope for six more years (until you know who is eligible for Medicare). Three things will be required for this to happen. First, we’ll need health, patience and energy. Second, the Presbyterian Church will need to support us—both spiritually and financially. And third, God will need to ‘give the increase.’ The fruits of our work depend on God: Paul writes, “as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (I Corinthians 3: 5-9). Other events in 2010 were full of disappointment. Mother Ruth died at age 90 in July. We remember her with joy. She was a faithful Presbyterian all her life and she did much to pass on her faith. We long to hear her

admonitions again. Some were very practical: “you can never have too much education,” “be home by dark,” and “stay in town.” She said many times, “love comes from God” and we now know how right she was. Her favorite verse was, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4: 13). Daughter-in-law Elizabeth has had many health setbacks this year as her debilitating condition is worsening. This is not what one hopes for. Son Paul is an excellent caregiver with the patience of Job. For us the cost of mission is measured in these losses—and the family moments when we are too far away to help.

As we enter 2011, we are grateful to members of Saint Mark for being faithful friends and mission-minded Presbyterians. Thanks for sending us to Lithuania—and thanks to Saint Mark Presbyterian for keeping us at the teaching task God has called us to do.

Property

Needed: Your Help to Maintain

God’s House…Your House

This is an open invitation to members of the Saint Mark community to renew your participation in, and/or explore how you can help with, the activities related to maintaining the beauty and functionality of our buildings and grounds. Please attend the Property Ministry’s

monthly meeting on February 6 – our Spirit and

Service Sunday – to hear about updated

organizational plans and see where your own

personal spirit and service can fit in.

As you know, we are proud of our facilities and being able to provide a unique, tranquil space that meets the needs of many different groups who require meeting space. We provide a wonderful “mission” which is hard to measure in a monetary way; however, maintaining this space for both us and the outside community does take time, commitment and money. We need your ideas, creativity and knowledge (and not just the type related to plumbing and electrical!) and willingness to serve on a team. We are going to strive to make participation on the Property Ministry an opportunity for meeting and working with others at Saint Mark, and a rewarding, fun, invigorating learning experience. Please contact one of us with questions.

FMT Report Through December 2010 – 100 % of Annual Calculation

Approved 2010 budget: $623,782 Total Amount Pledged: $531,782 Year to date income: $635,625 102% Year to date expenditures: $630,125 101% Percentage of pledges paid to date: 102% FMT is absolutely delighted to report that our 2010 income exceeded our estimates, due to additional pledges and payments on prior year pledges. Briefly, our year’s expenditures exceeded our estimate because of higher than expected property expenditures, due mostly to “emergency repairs and expenses”, outside of the normal operating budget for property. Nonetheless, we ended the 2010 budget year overall in the black by $5,500!! Thanks to everyone for their generous contributions and continued support! The new 2011 budget will be presented at the annual meeting on January 30. Although income is about even with last year’s, our estimated expenditures for 2011 for are a bit higher than in 2010, as is expected with many organizations’ next year’s budget, given some inflation. Saint Mark will continue to investigate ways to increase revenue, including a re-evaluation of rental rates for building use. We are pleased to announce that Rachel Zutshi is the new treasurer for Saint Mark. After many years serving as a dedicated and meticulous Treasurer of Saint Mark financial activities, Sandi Beabout retired in mid January after closing the books for 2010. Thank you, Sandi, for all of your hard work and devotion to Saint Mark !! Please contact Rachel at Rachel.Zutshi@gmail if you have questions about ministry, etc. budgets. From the Pledge Secretary………….

The pledge envelopes are in the Atrium of the Christian Education building and the “End of the Year” statements have been mailed. Please verify that all of the information is correct. If you have any questions or comments contact Connie Long at [email protected]

We welcome everyone to our community

Interested in joining a CSA this year and want to pick up your produce at Saint Mark?

Please read on: “Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.”—LocalHarvest.Org Veggie lovers at Saint Mark are working with Orchard Country Produce Farm (http://www.orchcountry.com/)to make our church one of their pick-up locations for this year’s growing season. We need 6 subscriptions per session to make it worthwhile for the farm. You may sign up for the whole season or any 7-week session that is convenient for you. Full or half-shares count as one subscription. Pick-up will be either Wednesday or Friday every week June through October. If you (or a friend, or a neighbor!) are interested, please contact Stephanie Lai for details at [email protected]. Deadline for sign up is April 10, 2011. For more information about CSA’s and the advantages for farmers and consumers, please visit: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/. If you have any CSA experience to share, we’d love to hear it!

Planned Giving The new tax law reinstates the provision allowing IRA distributions for those over 70-1/2 paid to qualified charitable organizations to be counted towards minimum required distributions, AND to be excluded from adjusted gross income. (However, they cannot be taken as separate itemized deductions, which would amount to double-counting.) The provision for such qualified charitable distributions pertains to 2010 and 2011, but required such contributions for 2010 to be made by 1/31/2011. The contribution must be made directly by the IRA custodian/administrator to the charity - but the check to the charity can be sent to donor to transmit to the charity. The following link provides an explanation of this provision: http://www.kiplinger.com/columns/ask/archive/how-to-donate-ira-distributions-to-charities.html You should consult your professional legal and tax advisors if you have further questions on this.
