The ROYAL REVIEW Three Hills School Newsletter March, 2015 “PROVIDING THE BEST POSSIBLE EDUCATION EXPERIENCE FOR EVERY STUDENT” From the principal… March is a great month to look back, and then to look ahead, as Winter is (hopefully) thinking about drawing to a close, and daylight is intensifying and promising good times to come. So, let’s put some numbers out as we celebrate some of the past things, and anticipate the future ones. 2 – New Staff Ms. Cree Gordon has just started teaching grade 6, as Mrs. Arvidson is preparing for her new arrival to their family. Mrs. Adrienne Tetz is just starting her second month teaching cosmetology, and our 22 students are progressing very well. 6 – Wrestlers to Provincials Mr. Sauve has been coaching wrestlers between grades 5 and 8 from THS and TroVal this year! Their program culminated with a chance to compete at the recent Junior Olympics Provincial Wrestling Tournament, and they did very well! Ask Mr. Sauve more about it, and see what you learn! 9 – buses pull up to drop off students at THS each morning 40 – participants in our Elementary Talent Show The Elementary Talent Show was an awesome event, with a huge thanks to Mrs. Arvidson and her grade 6 cast. It is excellent to host parents and enjoy the creative performances of our students as they make their art come alive. athletes have achieved this season We also thank Mrs Vaughan for all her work to coordinate our athletic program the many students who have scored amp timed games and the loyal fans who have come out to cheer on the Royals Good luck at the Zone Championships Royals 140+ - Students amp staff wearing shirts for Pink Day (anti-bullying awareness) Our awareness and willingness to consider how we can best treat each other is the focus of the anti-bullying week that is just drawing to a close Thanks to Ms Monson and the Me to We Club we have been able to have a week of activities that focuses on not standing by but standing up considering how our words and attitudes and actions impact others and choosing to be leaders by example with our choices

246 ndash Report Cards for elementary students March 6 sees our report cards head home with a chance for a Parent ndash Teacher Interview the next week (March 11) A change this year is that you will schedule your interview online rather than calling the school See the info notice in the report card or in this newsletter So apparently we just turned the corner and are looking ahead now 14 - Secondary teachers will be inviting students to be their guest at the 2nd Breakfast of Champions on March 20 Watch the webpage for the picture celebrating those students following the event 18 ndash Drama students in Beauty amp the Beast Ms Essingtonrsquos spring production features junior and senior high students in roles as both the cast and crew for this timeless classic Be sure to catch one of the shows on the evening or matinee performances 129 senior high students to participate in SpeakOut Forum THS is hosting a school provincially designed improvement conversation with our senior high students on March 17 With the assistance of more than a dozen community facilitators we will be listening to our students interact around the questions of how to make their learning better how to improve our school and how to take the next step in making THS a great school 107 - Skiers on Mount Nakiska March 17 sees our junior high students up well before dawn to hit the slopes for the annual ski trip Have a great time and schuss safely 81 ndash Travellers heading to Europe on March 31 from THS amp Trochu Valley School 3 ndash countries (UK France Spain) with these major cities as destinations - London Paris and Barcelona 2 ndash tour buses to transport the entire group

A big thank you to Mrs Christina Trudel for all her help with the Guided Reading Program in the library Mrs Trudel looked up thousands of titles on reading websites to find the guided reading levels for our elementary students a project that has taken about 2 years Now I just have to finish labelling the books and entering the information into the library program With the Guided Reading Program teachers have tested students to find out their reading levels and each student knows what his or her level is A student is then able to pick an extra library book at his or her reading level to read on their own or read aloud to someone else Mrs Anhorn

The Chemistry 30 class makes calorimeters out of pop cans

Mr Kozak explains ldquoTheres water in the can that absorbs heat from a chemical reaction (in this case combustion of a fuel) We use a candle in one lab and 3 different alcohols in the other

A big thank you to Mrs Christina Trudel for all her help with the Guided Reading Program in the library Mrs Trudel looked up thousands of titles on reading websites to find the guided reading levels for our elementary students a project that has taken about 2 years Now I just have to finish labelling the books and entering the information into the library program With the Guided Reading Program teachers have tested students to find out their reading levels and each student knows what his or her level is A student is then able to pick an extra library book at his or her reading level to read on their own or read aloud to someone else Mrs Anhorn

A big thank you to Mrs Christina Trudel for all her help with the Guided Reading Program in the library Mrs Trudel looked up thousands of titles on reading websites to find the guided reading levels for our elementary students a project that has taken about 2 years Now I just have to finish labelling the books and entering the information into the library program With the Guided Reading Program teachers have tested students to find out their reading levels and each student knows what his or her level is A student is then able to pick an extra library book at his or her reading level to read on their own or read aloud to someone else Mrs Anhorn

The Chemistry 30 class makes calorimeters out of pop cans

Mr Kozak explains ldquoTheres water in the can that absorbs heat from a chemical reaction (in this case combustion of a fuel) We use a candle in one lab and 3 different alcohols in the other

lab Students measure the temperature change of the water and the can and then do some

Mr Kozak explains ldquoTheres water in the can that absorbs heat from a chemical reaction (in this case combustion of a fuel) We use a candle in one lab and 3 different alcohols in the other

lab Students measure the temperature change of the water and the can and then do some

math to figure out the potential energy released by burning the fuel In the second lab they also compare evaluate how the number of bonds in the chemical affects the energy given

A big thank you to Mrs Christina Trudel for all her help with the Guided Reading Program in the library Mrs Trudel looked up thousands of titles on reading websites to find the guided reading levels for our elementary students a project that has taken about 2 years Now I just have to finish labelling the books and entering the information into the library program With the Guided Reading Program teachers have tested students to find out their reading levels and each student knows what his or her level is A student is then able to pick an extra library book at his or her reading level to read on their own or read aloud to someone else Mrs Anhorn

Mr Kozak explains ldquoTheres water in the can that absorbs heat from a chemical reaction (in this case combustion of a fuel) We use a candle in one lab and 3 different alcohols in the other
