October 15, 2015 Dear Members, Supporters and Friends: We are pleased to present The Royal Oak Foundation’s 2014 Annual Report and share the record of our work in advancing our mission to inspire Americans to engage with and support the work of the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Thanks to the generous support of members and donors from across the U.S., our 2014 Appeal for Stourhead significantly surpassed our $100,000 goal, and, together with a special matching grant from the Foundation’s Legacy Fund, produced a grant of $240,000 to preserve and restore key features of Stourhead’s magnificent Picturesque landscape. We extend our special appreciation to our colleagues at the National Trust, particularly Trusts & Foundations Manager Sophie Bennett, and the brilliant team at Stourhead headed by Mike MacCormac, who welcomed our leadership supporters with several truly wonderful visits through the course of the year. The Timeless Design Gala on November 13 honored Viscount Linley and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. We were very pleased with the success of our “Mission Possible” charity auction as part of the gala, which did double-duty in raising awareness of our mission and funds to support crucial conservation and education initiatives in partnership with the National Trust. We want to express our great appreciation to our honorees, sponsors and all those who supported the Timeless Design Gala, our signature annual fundraising event. 2014 also saw the continuation and deepening of our membership recruitment efforts at the threshold of National Trust properties. We are pleased to say that we exceeded our goals for this initiative and have increased them for 2015. This is very much a joint effort with our colleagues at the Trust, and its success is a clear sign of the vitality of our partnership. Our membership team also completed initial work on the Foundation’s new database at the end of the year, which paved the way for significant enhancements to our website for the benefit of our members and our mission. Our Drue Heinz Lectures are central to our mission, providing a vehicle for bringing noted speakers on British art, architecture, history and literature to audiences across the U.S. as well as for fostering awareness of the work of the National Trust. We are very grateful to Mrs. Heinz for her vision and commitment to the lectures, now made possible with lead funding from the Drue Heinz Trust for 23 years. Midway through 2014 we launched the Fleming Challenge, a matching grant program sponsored by our longtime supporter, Ronald Lee Fleming, which seeks to raise $1,500,000 to provide an endowment for the lecture series. As we write, we are closing in on that goal, and we are very grateful to Ron for his vision and long-term commitment. In 2014 the Foundation welcomed several new staff members: Jacqueline Bascetta, Chelcey Berryhill, Marilyn Fogarty and Sam McCann. We thank them and their more seasoned colleagues for the contributions they make to our work everyday. We express our appreciation to our colleagues on the Foundation’s Board of Directors for their extraordinary support and commitment. We also thank our colleagues at the National Trust and our partner organizations across the U.S. and the U.K. for all they do, every day, to preserve our built and cultural heritage. Respectfully, Bruce Coleman Perkins Sean E. Sawyer, Ph.D. Chairman Executive Director

ATTINGHAM SUMMER SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

SUPPORT | 8ANNUAL REPORT 2014

Royal Oak awarded $30,000 to the American Friends of Attingham in support of full and partial scholarships for Americans participating in the 2014 Attingham Summer School. Since its inception in 1952, the Attingham Summer School has hosted numerous American scholars, curators, architects and designers, acquainting them with the architectural and social history of the English country house over several centuries. Royal Oak’s support of over $525,000 to date has enabled over 145 Americans to participate in this program.

DAMARIS HORAN PRIZE: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE FELLOWSHIPThe Royal Oak Foundation awarded the 2014 Damaris Horan Prize to Eduard Krakhmalnikov of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Krakhmalnikov’s project involved researching and writing a historic landscape report on the parkland and gardens at the National Trust’s Charlecote Park, Warwickshire. His work focused on the influence of Lancelot “Capability” Brown and will form a basis for the Trust’s development of programs to celebrate the tercentennial of Brown’s birth in 2016.

The Damaris Horan Prize is a biennial residential fellowship with the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on landscape history and horticulture. Established by The Mudge Foundation and named for Royal Oak’s Executive Director from 1987 to 2003, the Horan Prize provides training and educational opportunities for individuals with a professional interest in the history, management and conservation of historic landscapes and gardens.

Royal Oak’s 2014 Appeal for StourheadStourhead is among the most historically significant landscape gardens in the world. Henry Hoare II, who designed and laid out the gardens from 1741, was justly named ‘the Magnificent’ for his vision in creating this masterpiece. Stourhead’s architectural features lead the visitor on a journey of discovery and delight around the central lake, with ever-changing vistas along the way. In 2014, Royal Oak supporters helped raise $240,000 for the conservation of three of Stourhead’s most significant features: The Temple of Apollo, The Grotto and the Pinetum. We thank our loyal members for helping us preserve this remarkable world-renowned garden.

In 2014, Royal Oak began promoting the new Legacy Circle across all communication platforms with the Legacy brochure (left). The initiative generated excitement among dedicated members and includes the list above. This core group of donors will help Royal Oak seed the fund to benefit projects throughout the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Timeless Design GalaOn November 13, 2014, The Royal Oak Foundation held its 17th Timeless Design & Gala Benefit at the Essex House in New York City. Proceeds of the gala support the Foundation’s programs in the United States and its work with the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The 2014 Timeless Design Award: David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley of Nymans. The son of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon, Linley’s creative ability was nurtured from an early age. He developed an avid interest in wood-working as a student, which led to his first LINLEY collection, launched in 1985. His work continues to be beautifully made by hand with distinctly British sophistication, charm and inventiveness. In 2006, Lord Linley became Chairman of Christie’s UK, where he is responsible for leading the Chairman’s office and working with Christie’s specialists to develop business and client relationships both in the UK and internationally.

EXPERIENCE | 22ANNUAL REPORT 2014

Experience | Membership2014 proved to be a robust year for membership. Revenue reached an all-time high of $728,000; this represents an increase of 6.5% over 2013. The number of annually renewable member-households grew by 12% to 6,500. The bulk of this growth came from new memberships, which were up 29% over 2013. We attribute this increase to a surge in recruitment at National Trust properties as well as a stronger web presence and improved social media communica-tion. Our search engine traffic grew by 35%, our social media audiences increased by 50% and email communica-tion with supporters became more frequent and fruitful, with open rates comfortably above the industry average.

Royal Oak continues to have members domiciled in all 50 states, as well as 11 countries around the world. A significant proportion of our members, however, reside on the east and west coasts of the United States, with New York and California producing approximately 19% of all member-households. We are proud to report that 105 member-households are Armed Forces personnel living overseas.

In 2014, we continued our efforts to increase recruitment at National Trust properties in the UK. The Royal Oak Newsletter was made readily available to all properties through the Trust’s distribution system; along with our “American Visitors” membership leaflet, the Newsletter is one of the primary tools used by recruiters at the sites when engaging American visitors.

Throughout the year, we worked closely with our consultant, Alex Youel of Your Membership Matters, and our colleagues at the Trust, focusing on recruitment of Americans at properties in the London and Southeast Region of the Trust, where foreign visitor numbers are highest. In the spring, Director of Member Services Winifred Cyrus and Executive Director Sean Sawyer attended the annual Recruiters’ Conference for the South East Region, and visited 14 key properties in the region to discuss strategy with recruitment staff. Specific targets were set for the top 20 visited properties, and an overall goal of 400 memberships was established (an increase over the 309 memberships generated in 2013). The results of our efforts exceeded our expectations with a total of 433 memberships recruited at National Trust sites by the end of 2014. A goal of 500 memberships has been set for 2015.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014

Since its inception, Royal Oak has been able to strengthen its mission with the support of thousands of members who share our passion for the history and culture of Great Britain and the unparalleled work of the National Trust. One measure of this support is reflected in the annually renewable memberships that have been sustained without interruption for years – decades in some cases. In fact, 12% of those house-holds have been with us for 20 years or more. That’s what we call loyalty!

Learn | Lectures and Tours Royal Oak’s Lectures and Tours are the Foundation’s primary vehicle for fostering a greater awareness of the work of the National Trust among Americans and, more broadly, enhancing the appreciation of Anglo-American cultural heritage.

Launched in 1975 and made possible by lead funding from The Drue Heinz Trust since 1992, Royal Oak’s Drue Heinz Lectures bring well-known and respected scholars, curators and authors to speak to audiences around the United States on topics in British history, architecture, decorative and fine arts, and literature.
