By its very nature the life of a community is consistently in transition. Pastoral programs change to meet the needs, growth and development of the faith community. My role as pastor, in conjunction with the staff and others, is to be aware of and respond to the needs of the parish. One of the changes we have seen is the increase in Hispanic families within our faith community. This year 20 of our First Holy Communicants were from families where the parents speak Spanish as their first language. In addition, 10 of our newly Confirmed this year were from households where Spanish is the spoken language of the adults at home. Recognizing this and seeking to minister more completely and to communicate more effectively, I was interested to learn that the Congregation of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist, a community whose Sisters have served this parish over several decades in a variety of ways, were seeking a position for one of their Sisters. Sr. Niurka (Niky) Burgos C.S.JB has ministered in youth programs in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Sister was born in the Dominican Republic and is a member of the same community as Sr. Elsa, and of Sr. Mary Faith, Sr. Anne Marie, Sr. Anita and other Sisters who, as I mentioned, have served the needs of this parish so faithfully spanning many decades. Sr. Niky visited the parish some months ago when we had our Confirmation Retreat to have an experience of who we are as a community of faith. It was a favorable experience as she then indicated to her Superior a desire to minister here. As she came highly recommended, I understood this to be, for our parish, a great opportunity considering that Sr. Niky has experience in youth ministry and will have the skills necessary to forge relationships with the various families and cultures within our faith community. That will mean a change in parish staffing. Amilee Beer has served the youth within our programs these past 3 years. Amilee is an employee of BOLD Youth Ministry, married to Jeff Beer, Director of Ministries at Fiat Ventures, and was contracted to us for the purposes of youth ministry. I am grateful to Amilee for her dedication to the youth of our parish, assisting with the Bridges Run and Appalachian Service Projects, and her two years of coordinating the Confirmation program. Amilee has been most helpful in assisting Sr. Niky in transitioning so that Sister will be able to coordinate and lead our Appalachian Service Project from July 29th through August 4th. Joining Sr. Niky on the Appalachian trip will be Sr. Elsa and John Calabro who are veterans of the service project. John has been assigned to the parish for his summer experience until mid-August. Then he will return to Rome to prepare for his Ordination to the Order of Deacon on September 27th. His time here affords him the opportunity to experience the day to day life of a parish. It is great to have him here in the parish where his faith has been nurtured over many years. In addition to meeting the needs of the youth in the parish, we will also be expanding ministry to young adults and newly/recently married couples. Young adult volunteers and recent college graduates wanted to offer something to the young adults of the parish as an opportunity to discuss faith, be supported on the journey and to share social time with other young adults. While we are in the initial planning stages, more details will follow. In a similar vein, we are in the process of offering similar opportunities to young married couples. This too has come at the suggestion of married couples who seek to have a parish based gathering for couples as a means of support, shared ideas and enrichment in their journey. For me this is all very exciting and meaningful as we continue to build a strong faith community. If any of this is of interest to you, please let me know so that when we come to the next stages of planning you will be included. Attention to these aspects of parish ministry is essential and our efforts must be robust. Recent surveys offer us sobering statistics. For every new Catholic coming into the Church, six are leaving. The decision to leave is made between the ages of 10 and 20. Even if the action does not follow immediately, the decision is often made and we need to offer better formation to recede that tide. We cannot make people believe, even God does not do that. By re-orienting our Faith Formation programs, we are encouraging and assisting parents to see the true beauty of our treasured faith by placing the Mass at the center of our program. This has borne fruit as we see families recommitting themselves to Sunday Mass participation. Each of our Formation Programs must have substance—the true substance is an encounter with Jesus Christ. Once we truly meet Jesus, fall in love with Him and desire a relationship based in truth, our lives are enriched and transformed. As a community we must strive to offer this for every member. May God continue to pour out the love and grace we need to grow as a community, firmly rooted in the person and teachings of Jesus the Christ.

Peace, Fr. Richard

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY First Reading: Amos 7:12-15 Amaziah ordered Amos to leave Bethel and never prophesy there again. Amos replied that he had not been a prophet, but was a shepherd until he was called by God.

Second Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14 or 1:3-10 Paul exults God’s immeasurable generosity as he recounts all the blessings that have been bestowed upon all God’s people. We all became adopted children of God when we heard the message of truth Christ brought to us, and because of it, believed in him.

Gospel: Mark 6:7-13 Jesus gave the twelve disciples authority over unclean spirits and sent them out to preach and heal the sick. He advised them to bring nothing with them and to shake the dust from their feet of any town where they had not been welcomed. Jesus wanted them to understand what they would need to do in his place after his death.

This format promotes the family as being the most important influence in a child’s faith life.

Registration for Faith Formation for grades 1 through 10 is available on our parish website.

First Communion preparation is a two year process beginning in 1st grade. If your child will be new to the program please contact Deirdre Nemeth at 908-647-0421 or [email protected] for additional information.

JUST US KIDS LEARNING CENTER

Title X is an HHS program to provide family planning clinic services to low-income and uninsured people. Instituted under President Reagan and upheld by the Supreme Court in 1991, it excluded abortion or abortion referrals but later rulings included such services. A new rule change proposed by President Trump and HHS would again block federal Title X grants from funding service providers that offer abortion services and referrals. A 60 day Public Comment period is open until July 31st and may be accessed at regulations.gov. Please provide your supportive comments to the proposed HHS Title X rule change. Your comments can make a difference for Life in our country. If the proposed rule change (referred to as the Protect Life Rule) is enacted, Planned Parenthood alone could lose $60 million of funding if they do not separate abortion services from their overall services.

UPDATE ON TITLE X PROGRAM

Life Facts Tuesday, June 26th was a victory for free speech and pregnancy resource centers at the U.S. Supreme Court! The Justices handed down their decision in the NIFLA v. Becerra case, ruling that a California law forcing pro-life pregnancy resource centers to advertise for abortion is compelled speech and is unconstitutional.
