An academic year in film with

Page 2: The Review Show, the annual

This academic year has seen some great cinematic releases and so I have created this compilation of our 8+ rated films not only to celebrate all the fun we have had

this year but so that you can benefit from it too. An 8+ score is a film that we think

anyone should be able to appreciate and would recommend regardless of your

cinematic preferences.

Imagine a semi-deserted seemingly lawless Iranian town, Bad City. Imagine a young woman, all right an ‘ethical’ vampire

(that likes Madonna). Imagine a quite film with a sparse cast and a brooding friendship/romance and all sorts of descents. Imagine a cat. Imagine wanting things from a film, imagine it

delivering all of those things but better than you had imagined.

This film won 4 Oscar’s and broke new ground in terms of camera work. It also includes an Edward

Norton vs Michael Keaton fight scene.

This one will leave you thinking.

This one will join the war movie greats lists.

If you love war movies, watch it. If you don’t like war movies, watch it. If you

really really hate war movies or any kind of loud noises, mud, male heavy movies

then maybe skip this one.

Very good ‘edge of your seat’ stuff this.

What it does, it does to perfection.

Raised in a convent, before taking her vows Ida must visit her only living relative. Embarking on a journey

of discovery their family’s tragic story unfolds leaving them both to learn how to live again.

Amazing.

Loyally based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon, confused quite frankly is probably how you will feel upon watching ‘Inherent Vice’. People have walked out of

screenings precisely for this reason, but persist and just let it happen, don’t chase it. Like most detective movies, it all gets tied up in the end.

Except, this one is like no other. Voiced-over by Joanna Newsom this is a drug-induced PI

investigation tangled up in a whole pile of other things. But it’s beautiful and amazing in more

ways than it is confusing.

According to The Guardian - Selma is a well-researched, accomplished and fair-

minded biopic, set around a sensationally good lead performance.

We liked it too.

I’m told it will make you cry.

Very well told/acted although slightly idealistic.

Not just for the kiddies.
