Message from the Head of School

As Christmas fast approaches and the old year begins to make way for a brand new decade,

we can look back on a busy and action packed term. This edition of the Redhill Review gives

a flavour of the many events that have taken place and the incredible achievements of our

students. It has certainly been a busy term with Year 11 students taking their mock

examinations and finding out the outcomes on mock results day. All Year 11 students now

have a clear idea of where their strengths lie and areas they need to work on before the real

exams next summer. Year 13 will have the same experience in the new year and we wish

them luck.

The Year 7 students have started well and have settled into life at Redhill. For the first time

ever, I took part in the Hagg Farm residential in November with Africanus House. The

students bonded well and worked brilliantly as teams to solve some very challenging

problems. The tension in the problem-solving Olympics was palpable and it was won with the

giant Jenga which was the final event. Gripping to say the least!

In the run up to Christmas, the students and staff have been involved in a number of events.

There has been a Community Coffee afternoon, carol singing in local residential homes and

the annual carol concert at St Paul’s Church in Daybrook. The quality of the musicianship and

vocals was stunning. We have also had the school production which this year was ‘Sister

Act’. The universal opinion of those who saw it was that this was the best school production

ever! High praise indeed but thoroughly deserved. We will finish the term on a high with a

special Christmas reading event and the ever popular Redhill’s got Talent.

Finally, I would like to thank the staff and students for their continued hard work and commitment and all parents for continuing to support the school. I hope you have a peaceful and happy holiday.

Mr N Matthews - Head of School

Message from the Principal

May I also wish you all a happy and restful Christmas break. Following the recent general

election, I would also like to take this opportunity of thanking our outgoing MP, Vernon

Coaker, for all the support he has offered the school, staff and our students over the last 22

years. Vernon has been an outstanding constituency MP and a real friend of Redhill. We will

miss his wisdom, humour and tireless hard work. We wish him well in whatever he chooses

to pursue next in the coming years.

Six Year 8 students took a trip to The Bolsover School to take part in a national STEM

competition called The Faraday Challenge. Penelope Davies-Bright, Daniel Wallace,

Katie Hadley-Killips, Lana Treacy, Laila Carruthers-Catcheside and Poppy Greentree

represented the academy with flawless character. They were tasked with building an

outreach vehicle that can provide aid during the fallout of natural disasters. The Redhill

team designed and constructed an outstanding vehicle that had a working propeller and

winch to deliver the goods to people in disaster zones. It looks like the next generation

of engineers is safe if the Faraday students at the Redhill Academy have anything to do

with it!

On October 16th The Redhill Academy was proud to support the national ‘Restart a

Heart Day’ sponsored by The British Heart Foundation (BHF), in partnership with East

Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS).

The aim of this day is to train as many

people as possible in CPR (chest

compressions) to create a ‘Nation of

Lifesavers’. Statistically in the UK

people who suffer a cardiac arrest,

where a person’s heart suddenly

stops beating and they are not

breathing, have a rapidly decreasing

chance of survival without early

recognition and early CPR.

CPR manually compresses the heart to keep blood and oxygen flowing to the brain until

professional help can take over. The UK currently falls behind other countries around

the world with bystanders often either not knowing what to do, or being too afraid to do

something.

This was the first year The Redhill Academy signed up to take part and with the help of

volunteers from EMAS, other emergency services and local hospitals, Year 9 and 10

students took part in fast paced 30-minute practicals to teach them how to save a life.

The key message for the day was clear; simple skills save lives - so have a go! There

was a definite ‘buzz’ after the sessions with many staff and students wanting it to be

repeated next year. Oliver Bere from EMAS who lead the sessions said “The students

were a credit to the school. Their impeccable behaviour and overwhelming attitude to

simply take part really made the difference – well done!”

In total 450 students were trained in CPR on the day, the highest number from any

secondary school that took part within Nottinghamshire. That’s 450 new ‘Redhill

Lifesavers’ out there.

Students were rewarded with a free pen after each session to see them prepared back

to lessons and certificates for each student who took part will be given out at the School

Awards ceremony in due course.

I would also like to add my thanks to all the staff for allowing the students out of lessons

to attend these sessions. The day was incredibly successful and I am particularly proud

of all the students that took part. What an amazing achievement!

Will Shaw plays Grieg

Those of you who know Will Shaw, Year 11, will know that he is a very unassuming young man and isn’t one to show off his abilities. Some of you may be aware that he is an exceptional pianist who gained a grade 8 distinction in Year 6 and passed his diploma in Year 8. He mentioned to me a couple of months ago that he was entering Newark and Sherwood Concert Band’s 'Young Soloist of the Year' competition. This competition was open to all young musicians who are aged 18 and under and he went on to win this. Here is a recording of him playing the first movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor along with Newark and Sherwood Concert Band:

On Thursday 10th and Friday 11th October 2019, Year 11 students had the opportunity to experience

an interview with volunteers from a variety of local businesses. In preparation for this, Year 11

students undertook CV workshops and received guidance and support on interview techniques.

We received extremely positive feedback from the employers who commented on how professional

and prepared our students were.

Inter-House Events

The House Achievement Co-ordinators are extremely proud to share with you the entries for this year’s Arts Challenge. Under the theme 'Equality', students were asked to produce a piece of artwork in the medium of their choice, which both clearly explored the theme and demonstrated skilful techniques.

There were so many entries this year that a mini exhibition of all the artwork was displayed and Redhill staff were requested to view and vote on the work. The work was extremely well received and we were overwhelmed with the positive feedback from teachers and support staff.

The Nottinghamshire Outstanding

Achievement 4Uth Award The Nottinghamshire Outstanding Achievement 4Uth

Award aims to recognise young people who have

achieved a great deal and pushed their personal

boundaries, whatever they are. It is a county council

initiative to celebrate the achievements of young people

across the county.

Jasmine Chapman, Year 7, was nominated for the

Nottinghamshire young achievement award for several

reasons: her charity fundraising efforts, her sporting

achievements, the way she has raised awareness of

dwarfism in school and the community, and her overall

approach to life.

Jasmine decided she wanted to raise funds for Little People UK, a charity supporting

people with this condition. Jasmine and her mum worked tirelessly, collecting raffle prizes

and putting on an amazing coffee morning, raising £1,500.

She then set her sights on the Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSA UK), organising a

fundraising day called 'Sport for All'. Students were able to try inclusive sports and raise

money through sponsorship. Jasmine enlisted celebrity support and Ellie Simmonds sent a

personalised video, for an awareness assembly, where Tom Mills from DSA UK helped

telling young people about dwarf sports. Another £1,400 was raised, which paid for

inclusive PE equipment and also supported the work of DSA UK.

The events and fundraising have had a major effect. Jasmine helped many people to

celebrate differences and to see the importance of attitude and approach to life in

achieving goals.

Jasmine raised around £3,000 for charity, raised awareness of dwarfism at school and the

community and has also made various sporting achievements. She went on to not only win

the region award but also won the overall countywide award.

Jasmine doesn't let anything stand in her way. She is the sort of person that, wherever she

goes, she will attract attention, for all the right reasons. Jasmine is truly inspirational.

A big well done to Jasmine!

Silver Lining It was with great pride that we heard about the success of Year 8 student Angelica

Alexander in the Volvo Cup Under 14 figure skating championships in Riga, Latvia.

Angelica has competed in this prestigious tournament previously in Denmark, Slovenia and

Scotland. On this occasion, she was delighted to finish in second taking the silver medal

with Italian competitors in first and third. Angelica loved everything about the experience

including staying together in a hotel with all the other skaters and using her skills in the

Russian language to communicate with girls from eastern Europe. As a school, we are

immensely proud of her achievement.

On Monday 11th November, the whole school took time out to remember those who have

given their lives in conflicts across the globe. A two minutes silence was impeccably

observed throughout the Academy and two students from each tutor group represented

their group at a short service, held at the Memorial Garden. After a reading about the first

ever two minutes silence in 1919, the Last Post was played by Mr Latham and Alannah

and Charlie Mylechreest. A wreath was also laid at the memorial stone by Luke Moore

and Paige Jackson.

The Memorial Garden is a focal point within the school and very unique. It is a peaceful

garden for quiet reflection and contemplation and a place where we can remember the

fallen from the Arnold area as well as former members of staff and students who have

sadly passed away more recently. We will always remember them.

On a not so cold Wednesday 4th

December many students stepped forward from Knight House to raise money for a local charity called Footprints.

Footprints charity provides Conductive Education and other services to help children with mobility and communication problems develop the skills they need to thrive and achieve their potential.

We are very proud to support this charity and are extremely appreciative of the support given by students and families to fundraise this year. A big thank you to the many students that brought cakes in and baked goods to sell. This raised an impressive £89.50. We are still collecting sponsorship money for the Santa Run. A big thank you to all who took part and sponsored - we have already raised over £200.
