Pupils enjoy aquatic centre visit

Christmas comes early

pRolleston School pupils enjoy their first visit to the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston. Pictured from left, Kate Mulcay, Summer Kennedy and Emma Marshall take a break from their lessons. Team Totara pupil Ashleigh McCloy says, “that after one lesson, I learned things that I didn't know, like kicking on my side without a board.” She says that after their lessons finish she hopes to able to swim a whole lane.

pChristchurch singing teacher Lois Johnston, far right, and five of her students lead the singing of O Come All Ye Faithful for an appreciative audience which packed St John’s Church in Hororata for a Christmas-themed concert last weekend. Proceeds are earmarked for the community’s Anglican church, which suffered extensive damage in the September 2010 earthquake.

Council apologises over bridge removalThe Selwyn District Council has apologised to some Darfield residents for failing to consult them on removing an historic footbridge but it won’t be putting the bridge back.

The council also failed to carry out an inspection of the 100-year-old bridge prior to its removal during intersection improvements at the corner of Telegraph Road and Cardale Street in Darfield.

Residents Donna Storer and Barbara Clinton had appealed to the Malvern Community Board to get council to put the footbridge back and at its June meeting the board agreed to ask council to restore the bridge.

However, at its July meeting, following a report from council’s assets manager Murray Washington, the board adopted a do-nothing stance over the bridge.

Board member Mary Ireland said as the Darfield Township Committee had decided not to have the bridge restored the community board could not go against that decision.

The township committee’s former chairman Paddy McKay resigned from the committee following his involvement in having the bridge removed.

Murray Washington told the community board he had written to Mrs Storer to apologise for the ‘angst’ the council had caused her and the

community for the ‘communication breakdown’ over the bridge’s removal.

Mr Washington said an inspection by civil engineers Bond Frew Ltd of the bridge after its removal showed the bridge had significant decay and the engineer’s report concluded that the bridge had reached the end of its useful life.

Bond Frew estimated it would cost around $10,000 to replace the bridge, which is currently stored at a property owned by Mr McKay.

Mrs Storer says they are disappointed the bridge won’t be put back and were never seeking to have it replaced with a new one.

“What we would like to know is why council did not follow the proper process in having the bridge removed and why a report on the bridge’s condition wasn’t done prior to it being removed.”

The bridge was originally built to enable the Sisters of Mercy nuns from the St Johns Convent in Darfield cross a water race running alongside Telegraph Road to reach St Joseph’s Catholic Church, which was established in 1888. ¢

pThe track used by convent nuns to reach the St Joesph’s Catholic Church in Darfield is now a path to nowhere after council removed an historic footbridge across a water race

The programme is in place to provide schools with funding to increase their non-classroom space, such as libraries, administrative facilities and multi-purpose spaces, in line with roll growth.

Principal Simon Moriarty says they are delighted to receive the funding but have yet to decide how it will be spent.

“The school board will be getting together to discuss where this money will go.”

Selwyn MP Amy Adams says the funding recognises the importance of

investing in non-classroom areas to support the overall school community.

She says nationwide the Government is investing $10 million in the programme to help meet its aims of providing modern environments to enhance learning.

This funding is additional to the schools’ Five Year Agreement allocation which is used to modernise and upgrade existing buildings.

New classrooms and gymnasium space are funded through a separate programme to match school roll growth.

For those non-skiers a helicopter is available to ferry visitors from the bottom hut to the Tarn from 10am, allowing access to all ages and recreational types without breaking into a sweat.

People are encouraged to pre-book their seat on the Mt Olympus website, www.mtolympus.co.nz.

Teams can enter for free either on the website prior to the event or on the day and for more information visit the website or call 03 318 5840. ¢

pSelwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe

Into the 21st centuryu by Mayor Kelvin Coe

Technology is changing at an amazing pace these days and so is the Selwyn District Council.

There are a number of examples of how technology is changing our service. We recently purchased the ‘Kotui’ software package from the National Library and this has improved and enhanced the level of service provided by our libraries.

We already offer the popular free Wi-Fi and public access computer services and now the libraries can offer e-books.

Four hundred and ninety-nine e-books and eight e-readers have been purchased and these books can be downloaded onto your computer, i-pad or other reading devices (except a kindle) from your home thus further enhancing the library services. The e-books are free to read but there is a small charge to borrow the e-reader.

Council is also increasing its presence in social media. As well as our website we have a twitter account (@futureforselwyn) and facebook pages for the Aquatic Centre, a page for young people called Sensational Selwyn Youth and a page for visitors called Sensational Selwyn. Facebook also allows us to quickly update our followers on news, events, consultation and emergencies and allows you to give us your views on the issues.

Our building department has a new software package which allows the whole consent process, from lodging the initial consent application for processing through to inspection reports being filed by our building inspectors in the field, to happen online, thus speeding up the process and delivering a better outcome to our customers.

Smart technology is now being deployed in most of council’s activities allowing us to provide better and more efficient customer service. ¢

The importance of managing our freshwater resources wiselyu by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

An issue close to my heart and one that I have been working hard on in my role as Minister for the Environment is the management of our freshwater resources.

pSelwyn MP Amy Adams

Here in Selwyn we are very aware of the significance of water as debates around the access to, and use of, water have raged in our province for years.

As well as being essential to our health and wellbeing, water is the lifeblood of our economy, particularly our agricultural sector. This was dramatically illustrated by the effects of last summer’s severe drought in many areas of New Zealand.

It is essential that we balance the need for water to irrigate our pastures with the needs of our native flora and fauna. We all want our children and grandchildren to be able to enjoy swimming and fishing in our nation’s rivers and lakes.

In order to do this we must have a robust framework in place. This is why we have been working on the development of a new freshwater management structure and have consulted widely on this issue, receiving hundreds of submissions and holding more than 50 meetings throughout the country with councils, iwi, environment groups, businesses and the public.

Following this consultation, Cabinet has confirmed the first stage of the freshwater reform programme, which is critical to improving our freshwater quality and the way we manage our water resources.

A key focus of the reforms is on community involvement, specifically through a collaborative approach which will give local community groups a

greater say in planning what they want for their local waterways and how they should be managed, under the umbrella of a national framework based on the best available science.

It is important to realise that there is no ‘quick fix’. It has taken many decades to create the issues we face and improving our water management system will require solutions that start now and build over the long-term. ¢

The community owned preschool, one of the few left in the country, is moving from its current location on Telegraph Road to its purpose built premises on Cardale Street.

“When we were looking at upgrading the current building we thought that if we were going to spend this money perhaps it would be better for us to look for our own site so we weren’t reliant on any outside influences,” Preschool centre manager Sally Whitwell says.

In light of that the preschool’s board of trustees made the decision to purchase a three acre block on Cardale Street in behind the Torlesse Bus Company yard.

“We as staff designed the building and gave the information to our architect who drew up the plans,” Whitwell says.

The build contract was awarded to Homes by Maxim and work began on the site in April.

New preschool taking shapeu by Kent Caddick

Excitement is mounting at the Darfield Preschool and Nursery as its new building takes shape.

pDarfield Preschool and Nursery centre manager Sally Whitwell left, and administration manager Clare Clatworthy inspect building progress at their new site

“We are running a bit of a sweepstake on when it was going to be completed and I picked May so I’m out,” says Whitwell, who believes they will be able to move into the new site before Christmas.

“The new site is not about us getting bigger as we want to be able to retain the family and community feel we have with the preschool but it will enable us to be more in charge of our own destiny.” ¢

pDraft plans for a new public toilet block in Springfield have been given the thumbs and it is hoped the new block will be open in time for the Christmas holidays. Graeme Wilson, Selwyn District Council’s property and facilities and team leader, says the plans have been approved by the toilet working group and will now go back to the architect who will draw up detailed construction plans and the contract will then go out for tender.

Blenheim trip for DHS jazz band

Olympic medallist visits Sheffield

u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

u by Kent Caddick

Darfield High School’s jazz band will take part in the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in Blenheim this month.

Pupils at Sheffield Contributing School had a treat last week with a visit from New Zealand Olympic rower Storm Uru.

The 15 strong jazz band is made up mostly of junior school students. With the departure of many of the jazz band’s senior students at the end of last year the band is full of fresh new players according to Rachel Balchin, Head of Music at Darfield High School.

“For most of them it’s a completely new experience. I’m hoping they’ll come away feeling really inspired,” she says.

The festival will include tutorial master classes run by the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band musicians, various public performances around Blenheim and a gala concert. The festival is open to all South Island schools.

Selwyn residents will have a chance to enjoy the jazz band when they perform at the Malvern Community Arts Council Concert at Trinity Church, Darfield in September. ¢

pSheffield Contributing School pupils Alex Griffiths (left) and Jake Benny have their photograph taken with Olympic medallist Storm Uru, who is wearing his Olympic bronze medal

Uru and rowing partner Peter Taylor took out a bronze medal in the lightweight double sculls division at last year’s London Olympics.

He brought with him his Olympic medal and all the pupils got to hold it helping to inspire their own Olympic dreams.

“We had such a great experience and now we know how much effort Storm put in to get all the way to the Olympics and I know that whatever it takes, I can do it,” senior student Katie Molloy said.

Another student Jake Benny said Uru taught them about perseverance and chasing their dreams.

“It doesn't matter what culture or background you come from or how big or small you are, you can do anything you set your mind to, and make your dreams come true.” ¢

The two most common chronic muscle problems are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Both FM and PMR are autoimmune diseases and result in muscle pain but that is about where the similarities stop. PMR mostly affects those over 60 and common symptoms are stiffness and pain commonly around the neck and shoulders especially in the mornings. Around 20% of people with PMR also develop Temporal Arteritis. This is caused inflammation of the major arteries which pass through the temple causing vision problems and even blindness.

The major medical therapy is the steroid prednisone which blocks the production of inflammatory cytokines usually with a rapid reduction in symptoms. Many recover in a year or so but others have this for an extended period or find that it recurs after a period of remission. People on statin medicines need to be aware that these can exacerbate PMR symptoms which is why I invariably add CoQ10 to those with PMR who take statins.

Nutritional therapy complements the effects of prednisone by reducing immune system production of inflammatory chemicals. We add a wide range of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds to assist energy production and to lower inflammation. Serious fatigue is a feature of PMR and increases in energy is often the first benefit people feel from nutritional therapy.

FM is a lot more complex. These are often referred to as FM syndromes as they involve other problems especially Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There are relatively few medical treatment options but the most common are tricyclic antidepressants to treat both pain and insomnia.

FM is more difficult to treat with nutritional therapy as it is not a simple inflammatory problem. It appears that muscle mitochondria are damaged by free radicals which impair muscle fibre function which reduces energy and causes pain (M. Cordero et al, 2010). I have found people get real benefits from intensive multi-antioxidant therapy including CoQ10, OPC, resveratrol and many others. I always add broad spectrum vitamin and minerals and often high dose MSM and magnesium before bed to help with muscle function. Give me a call if you need help. My online newsletter at www.johnarts.co.nz has the full version of this column.

The Xtreme Fitness playground system will be built by the Playground Centre in Wanganui and includes climbing walls, nets, bridges and bars designed for fitness and entertainment.

“We are really excited that the senior students will have a playground,” the school’s head boy Tait Spain says.

“I’m looking forward to having a go,” adds Ally Taylor, the school’s deputy head girl.

Helen Howden from the school’s Board of Trustees says they wanted to provide something for students from Years 5 to 8.

“We wanted something that would be physically challenging and motivating for them.”

Howden said that three-quarters of the total cost of $81,000 has been raised from a variety of charities and trusts as well as the school’s own fundraising efforts.

“We hope to have it installed by the end of the year.”

Howden says the playground will be open for the community to use out of school hours.

Gillman Wheelans Limited, developer of the Preston Downs subdivision in West Melton, will combine with the school later in the year to provide a community fun day to help raise funds for the playground. ¢

History rememberedu by Belinda Cullen-Reid

A strong desire to ensure the history of the Whitecliff’s rail line is remembered has spurred local residents to pay tribute to the line in different ways, including history books and a possible commemorative site.

Hororata resident Bruce Maffey and his brother Richard have spent many years working on recording the history of the line which they will publish in two volumes, the first to be out later this year.

“We’ve included information about every person we could find who ever worked on the rail line,” Bruce Maffey says.

An interest in rail history had been passed down from their father who had been collecting information on railways.

“After our father died in 2006 it motivated me to get on with it. I thought it was our plan for life to preserve the history of the lines.”

Maffey says that the line began in 1875 and ran from Darfield through to Whitecliffs.

There were two trains a day and stations were at Hawkins, Homebush, Coalgate, Glentunnel, South Malvern and Whitecliffs.

“It was eleven and a half miles from Darfield to Whitecliffs.”

The initial reason for the Government building the line was to transport coal from several mines in Whitecliffs through to factories in Christchurch.

The trains also carried pipes and bricks from the pottery works and sand used in foundries to make moldings.

“It served the farming community as well. Stock would go to the freezing works on the train.”

The trains also carried passengers between 1875–1928, but the service was often slow with frequent stops and delays due to shunting. Maffey said it took an hour to get from Whitecliffs to Darfield.

With passengers travelling by bus and freight by truck, the Whitecliffs line became obsolete by the 1960s.

A group of people interested in preserving the history of the Whitecliffs line is being set up in Darfield by Don Chambers and Paddy McKay. ¢

pThe old Whitecliffs railway station building is now located at Tarling Common in the Whitecliffs township

The house that Brian rebuilt

It’s all go at Racecourse Hill as owners Brian and Bernice Cribb rebuild and restore the historic homestead which was fated for demolition after the September 2010 earthquake.

“We noticed the homestead for sale on TradeMe, came and had a look at it and fell in love with it,” Brian Cribb says.

Damage to the house included the crumbling of a significant amount of the ground floor bricks, as well as losing chimneys and around one-third of the slates off the roof.

“We should have just gone and bought ten acres and travelled the world, but we had to stop it from being knocked down,” Brian says.

The Cribbs have used a combination of timber and steel framing to bring the house to 100% earthquake regulation.

Using local tradespeople was important to the Cribbs. Timber came from the Darfield Sawmill and replacement bricks were sourced from Canterbury Clay Bricks in Darfield.

The restoration has been going for around 12 months and will be completed in two stages. The

owners hope to move into the completed first wing soon,

and have the second stage finished by March next year.

The house is not the only part of Racecourse Hill to get a makeover.

The original landscape design plan has been located with the intention of restoring the gardens

to their former glory. Not content with restoring

one part of Selwyn’s history the Cribbs then turned their attention to another.

St Theresa’s church between Coalgate and Hororata was for sale and Brian and Bernice Cribb decided it would make a welcome addition to their new home.

They bought it, put in on a truck and it is now resting on its new home on the grounds of

Racecourse Hill. “I put the church here because something inside

told me to do this,” Brian says. “People say it looks like it’s always been here.”

The church is situated on an area of land west of the house, with a backdrop of the hill and poplar trees.

Brian says he knew he wanted to have a church on the site and is hoping it will eventually be used for weddings.

The Cribbs have put in a new driveway off Gunn’s Road so that future users will have separate access from the homestead. A new amenities block is to be built nearby.

Built in 1911 out of native timber, the church still contains the altar,

confessional, church pews and organ. Bernard Duncan of the St Joseph’s Parish is very happy with the outcome.

“We are very happy about such a lovely building staying in the district,” he says.

“The buyer intends to continue to use it in a way for which it was intended which we are delighted about.” ¢

The land at Racecourse Hill was once part of a run of 40,000 acres owned by Alfred Creyke and John Watts-Russell.

The first house to be built on the site was later cut in half. One half was relocated just down the road and is now known as ‘The Oaks’.

The other half was moved to Bleak House Rd, but subsequently burnt down.

An area of about 4,500 acres

was sold to Harry Knight who commissioned Cecil Wood to design the present day homestead in 1912.

The home is 743 square metres with bricks cladding the ground floor and a wooden second story.

The hill itself has been a predominant feature of approximately 30 metres in an area of otherwise flat land. It is thought that the hill was formed as a result of early seismic activity.

West Melton trainernumber one in the landu by Kent Caddick

West Melton trainer Cran Dalgety has finally got a monkey off his back when he recently took out the New Zealand Harness Racing Trainer’s Premiership title.

Photo supplied by Racing Images — www raceimages.net.nz

pCran Dalgety celebrates with his family after picking up his first New Zealand Trainer’s Premiership title. Pictured with Cran is his wife Chrissie (back) and children Carter, holding the trophy, and daughters Laura (centre) and Madison

The monkey was threatening to turn into a bit of a gorilla for Cran after finishing second in the premiership for the last four seasons.

But that all changed at the Rangiora races on July 28 when Cran won two races to New Zealand’s leading trainer Mark Purdon’s one to clinch his first trainers’ premiership. He finished one

ahead of Purdon for the 2012–13 season, with a career best of 115 wins from 511 starters for $1,201,405 in stakes.

“It’s been a super all round effort and great to get there. We’ll takeour 30 seconds of fame and in a few years down the track, when we’re not quite as busy, we’ll be able to look back and think we did pretty good that year.”

Cran’s wife Chrissie, who has an equally impressive harness racing pedigree, says taking out the premiership title was quite overwhelming.

She puts her husband’s success down to him being a perfectionist.

“He leaves no stone unturned and is a great communicator when it comes to ensuring the owners are kept informed and I think the owners appreciate that.”

Cran’s first training win was in 1992 at Addington with Laud, who was driven by Chrissie’s legendary grandfather, the late Derek Jones.

The wins have flowed regularly since with the Kentuckiana Lodge stable winning $1 million-plus and securing over 100 wins in each of the last three seasons.

He has concentrated on being the best he can as a trainer, and enlisted two champion young drivers, firstly Mark Jones, and latterly Dexter Dunn, primarily over the years, to do most of his stable driving.

Dunn was in the sulky when Cran’s 2-year-old debutante Locharburn secured the premiership title with a win at Rangiora.

Earlier at the meeting Cran picked up his first win of the day with Princess Sophia, who is raced by mother-in-law Jenny Butt and was driven by brother-in-law Anthony Butt.

Cran says his success has been made possible with the support of great owners, like Jim and Susan Wakefield, Graham and Lyn Beirne, John and Margaret Smith, Trevor Beaton and Ross Stanbury, who have essentially had a horse with him from the start of his training career.

He also paid tribute to his hard-working staff at Kentuckiana Lodge, Kevin Turnbull, Murray Howard, David Moore, Bill Roberts, Matt Cross, Jack Trainor, Laura McKay and weekend worker David Whittle, for making this season’s success possible. ¢

“If you’re reading this newspaper –So are thouSandS of YouR customers!”

We all know that in business, those who advertise well prosper. And that businesses who are invisible soon close their doors. But how best to get the message to your customers – without hiring expensive agencies or employing a marketing guru full time? That’s a big question – but one you are answering for yourself right now.

Newspapers like the one you’re holding are the voice of local communities – a vital way of bringing people, organizations and businesses together. We give our advertisers the advantages of a ‘flyer drop’ at a fraction of the cost, without being seen as ‘junk mail’. We provide stories of interest to make sure your ad gets seen. And we’re the professionals when it comes to designing your ad – a service we provide in-house for free. It’s like having a dedicated marketing department on call!

If you want to be seen – and to be seen as part of the community – then place your advertising where it counts. Among the news, sports, views and information only a community newspaper is trusted to provide.

You can use a quantity surveyor to get an accurate costing before you put the job out to tender. Then when the tenders come in you have a good basis to evaluate them.

A quantity surveyor (QS) is a person trained in construction methods and costs. They work closely with you and the architect/designer, engineer and builder to itemise the quantities of materials and labour needed to build or renovate a house, using the design drawings.

The quantity surveyor’s estimate can give you a reasonable idea of the costs and it can be used by the builders when

tendering their quotes. (Note that the builder should only be given the QS estimate of materials required, not the price.)

Make sure that when you engage a quantity surveyor you know what sort of service they are providing. If you ask a general question, such as ‘how much to build a garage?’ you will get a best guess which may be way off target. But if you ask for a precise costing, you will get more accurate information.

A QS can also be used to calculate progress payments and to cost

Why should you use a quantity surveyor when building or renovating your home?u Article supplied by Consumer New Zealand, www.consumerbuild.org.nz

Before you invite tenders from builders, you may want to get some costings for the job to get an idea whether you can afford to go ahead.

variations during construction. They can also advise on the type of contract or the meaning of any special clauses that should be included in the contract. You can buy part of a QS service, for example, you might only use them for progress payments.

You would most likely use a QS if you are only getting one quote or if you are managing the project yourself. That way you have a benchmark to see if the quote is fair.

LOOKING FOR MACHINERY THAT DELIVERS OPTIMUM RESULTS?

You’re sure to have seen your local plumber, sparky, courier driver or builder lugging tools or shifting gear in a van just like this one, proof that the Hiace brand has stood not just the test of time, but the much more rigorous tests meted out by Kiwi tradies!

The 2007 iteration of the Hiace featured a powerful 3 litre turbo diesel motor, balancing enough grunt to haul heavy loads with the fuel economy that company accountants demand in a fleet vehicle. But it’s not just about power under the hood — a good working van needs to cleverly use available space, both up front and in the back.

The 2007 Hiace delivered, with a low flat floor, twin sliding doors and plenty of stowage for everything from power tools to timber and packages. Up in the cab there’s room for three ‘man sized’ passengers and their lunchboxes, along with a comfortable array of modern conveniences, such as the obligatory MP3 equipped stereo system, and aircon to cool down after a hard day of work on site.

A van which works as hard as you doCar of the week

Toyota’s range of legendary Hiace vans enjoy the same rugged reputation as the Japanese auto maker’s Hilux utes — practical tools for business which get the job done day after day.

The 2007 Hiace remains a firm favourite with workers in a wide range of industries — a trusty workhorse with a gutsy engine and tons of space to spare. No wonder that examples like this one are very sought after — and with just over 150k on the clock this ‘bulletproof’ Toyota is only just run in!

Come and check it out at Ray McLean Motors.
