Event Director, Geoff Bone said that over 3500 entries were received in the equestrian section in 2014, making it the second biggest equestrian section in the show’s history.

“Hot on the heels of increasing entry numbers by 10% in 2014, Royal Event status will further grow what is already the second largest equestrian event in New Zealand.”

Canterbury A&P Association President Nicky Hutchinson has been a competitor and volunteer in the equestrian section since the 1960s, and is excited to be hosting the Royal Event in her Presidential year.

Mrs Hutchinson said the association last hosted a full Royal New Zealand Show in 2009.

“We have aspirations to one day host the Royal Show here in Canterbury again, so in the meantime it’s fantastic to be able to give our competitors the opportunity to compete for Royal ribbons and medals again.

“We’re looking forward to delivering a fantastic event in 2015 not just for the competitors, but also for spectators by attracting some of the best competitors and horses in the country.”

Royal eventThis year’s Canterbury A&P Show will host a Royal A&P Equestrian Event giving competitors the chance to win prestigious Royal ribbons and medals at the annual Show.

Royal Agricultural Society President John Grigg said winning a Supreme Champion medal at a Royal A&P Event for a particular section is similar to winning a medal in that same section at a Royal A&P Show.

“It’s one of the most prestigious medals within the organisation, and along with the tri-coloured ribbon it’s sought after by competitors.”

That’s according to a survey of 160 people who visited the centre during May.

People reported they used the centre for a variety of activities. Swimming lessons, lane swimming and leisure swimming were the most popular reasons for visiting, with a number of people also enjoying the spa, using the centre for rehabilitation or therapy, or for aquajogging or aquafitness.

The survey showed that 83% of visitors rated the availability of pool space as good or excellent and that they would be likely or extremely likely to recommend that friends and family visit the centre.

Centre staff, including receptionists, lifeguards and swim instructors, were all considered to be doing a good job with

between 93% and 96% of customers rating these staff as excellent or good.

Selwyn Aquatic Centre manager Kathy Moore said the survey results were pleasing and indicated the centre provides a positive experience for its users.

"For our staff the results indicate that they are doing a great job to provide both excellent customer service for visitors and to keep the facility operating at a high standard.

"The centre is extremely well used by people from across Selwyn. We are visited by many Selwyn schools as well as offering swim lessons for local children," she said.

In the year to June 2015 the centre received 282,000 visits, exceeding its target of 270,000.

Generation Homes is to project manage the development of St John’s Project Rolleston base on the corner of Kidman Street and Norman Kirk Drive, including the refurbishment of an on-site building into a headquarters and training facility.

With no funding available to it the Selwyn Central St John Area Committee is looking to raise $1.1 million for Project Rolleston mainly through community fundraising.

Committee chair John Sunckell said Generation Homes has offered its services as project manager at no cost to St John.

“This is wonderful news as these types of developments need to fit in with all kinds of health and safety regulations for which we do not have the experience but Generation Homes do.

“This arrangement ensures we bring professional management into the process which would have otherwise been another cost to St John.

“This is not something you can just have a working bee for and we are able to tap into Generation Homes’ network of subcontractors.” Mr Sunckell said.

Nadja Beker, who along with husband Evan is a director of Generation Homes Christchurch, said working in with St John on Project Rolleston is a perfect fit for their company.

“We already have a significant relationship with St John as we donate $1000 from every house we build and sell in the region to St John we have built up a good relationship with St John Youth in Rolleston.

“We a delighted to be able to use the skills and talents we have in such a good cause.”

The development of St John’s new ambulance and training base in Rolleston has been boosted with an agreement between the emergency services organisation and builders Generation Homes.

Mrs Beker said they will also seek to use Selwyn based contractors throughout the development process.

Stage one of Project Rolleston includes the purchase of a building which is already on site, the renovation of the building and the construction of a garage to house

vehicles. Stage two involves the construction of a community based training facility.

Selwyn Central St John is aiming to have stage one of the project completed by late October or early November.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be just over $1 million.

CAB’s Christchurch Area Board says it regrets that it has to close its satellite service which was operating in the Darfield library on Tuesdays.

“This was an extremely hard decision and it has been made due to the low volumes of client contacts at Darfield since it was established in July 2014,” CAB’s area manager manager Mollie Howarth said.

“We would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication from the volunteers at Darfield who have been organising and running this service during the last year.

“We are committed to providing services to the community in the Selwyn district, and we value the work that has been carried out in Darfield and we will continue to support our volunteers there.”

Ms Howarth said they will be talking to the district council, who have been great supporters

Meals on Wheels in Lincoln and Rollestonby Lois Thomas, LDCC Services Development Coordinator

This months’ focus is on our Meals on Wheels service.

We are renowned for our delivery of nutritious meals to people who, because of their age, disability or illness, are unable to prepare their own.

Our organisation is contracted by the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) to provide this service to residents who meet the criteria, so that they can remain in their own homes for as long as is appropriate. Those who are entitled, receive a subsidy to the cost, making these meals a very economical option.

Meals are cooked in the catering department at Lincoln University and delivered Monday to Friday (except Public Holidays) by vetted, friendly, dedicated volunteers.

All deliveries include a main and dessert and all dietary needs are catered for eg. diabetic, gluten free, no dairy, no pork, cut up meat, or pureed.

We work with Selwyn Central Community Care volunteers in Rolleston to deliver meals to their area too.

Meals can be ordered on a short term or permanent basis and can be delivered hot (to eat at lunchtime) or chilled (to heat for tea).

An additional alternative for those living outside the delivery area is to get frozen meals which can be stored in the freezer to heat when required. These are also available to purchase privately for those not eligible for a subsidy, or for weekends and Public Holidays when there are no deliveries.

For enquiries about this service, give us a call in 03 325 2007.

West Melton volunteer firefighters dampen down after battling a large scrub and plantation fire near Lake Coleridge recently. It is believed the fire, which covered 30 hectares of scrub and tussock, began after high winds caused sparking in power lines. Five hectares of pine trees and a wood shed were also destroyed in the blaze. Around 24 Selwyn firefighters were involved in battling the blaze.

Kirwee Players has been putting on an annual musical for almost 40 years following a performance of Showboat in 1977, and this year will perform Grease made famous by the 1978 hit movie starring Olivia Newton- John and John Travolta.

Kirwee Players’ publicist Courtney Hyde says ticket sales have been brilliant and is urging those who have yet to book to do so now or miss out.

Grease, a 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, is set in 1959, at Rydell High School’s with its senior class.

romance between hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski.

The part of Sandy is being played by Kirwee Players’ newcomer Poppy Stowell, who says she is thrilled to have had the opportunity to play such a wonderful role.

For the past four years she has been performing regularly with the University of Canterbury’s Musical Theatre Society as well as working as president of the UC Drama Society this year.

Troy Scott, who plays Danny, is no stranger to Kirwee Players, having first played the trumpet in the band for Guys

and Dolls in 2010, then playing Eddie in the 2011 production of Blood Brothers.

He is currently studying at the New Zealand Broadcasting School and says his role in Grease has challenged him to exceed his comfort zone on many levels.

This year’s production is being directed by Phil Dean, musical direction by Darren Weber and choreographed by Anna Randall.

The show opens this Friday, August 7 at the Kirwee Community Hall with shows on Saturday and Sunday, and a second week of performances from August 12-15.

Mr Saville said he has always been an advocate for learner centred education and the position at Rolleston College presented an opportunity to put contemporary research and theory into practice.

“To be part of a school that will be leading change not following it, that is what I find exciting about this position.

“The challenges are really opportunities… the opportunity to grow a school, to establish a culture, to be forward thinking and have a modern environment to work within.

“To establish a reputation and to establish pride and a sense of belonging amongst the school community, all of these could be seen as challenges. I prefer to see them as opportunities.”

Defending champions Waihora brushed aside the challenge of Lincoln in one semifinal on the weekend while Southbridge was made to work extremely hard for its win over Darfield in the other semi, to set up a repeat of last year’s final.

From the first minute of the match against Lincoln, Waihora signalled its intentions it wasn’t about to let the Coleman Shield go without a fight.

A try to flanker Sam Toulmin after just five minutes put Waihora in front but Lincoln recovered from that shock and made the most of the running in the first spell.

However, Lincoln couldn’t cross the Waihora line and was made to pay when a Waihora break out went the length of the field with fullback Leon Simpson crossing under the posts to help the defending champions take a 12-0 lead into the halftime break.

Lincoln, which was marking captain Michael Bendall’s 100th senior game for the club, looked strong in the opening

stanza of the second half and an unconverted try to prop Ryan Odering put them right back in the game.

Waihora’s response was immediate with second-five Richard Mills splitting the Lincoln defence and a sweeping move ending with left wing Nick Rhodes touching down out wide. Mills then scored himself to give Waihora a handy 22-5 lead which it never relinquished.

Darfield’s outstanding season was ended in a thrilling match at Southbridge with the home side doing just enough to hold off the challenge of the Malvern men 22-18, giving Southbridge its shot at redemption for last season’s final loss.

This weekend’s division one final will kick off at the Darfield Recreation Ground at 3pm.

In other finals action, the combined Burnham Dunsandel Irwell club will contest the division two and three finals, clashing with Springston in division two and West Melton in division three.

Waihora’s first-five Mark Maitland puts a fend on his opposite Matt Golding to help set up his side’s first try.

Lincoln continued on its merry way with a 60-27 thumping of West Melton at the Lincoln Events Centre on Saturday to maintain its unbeaten record this season.

Broadfield moved into second place on the points table with a 53-41 win over Halswell A which drops into fourth place.

Top four clear outThe top four in the Selwyn premier netball competition have sorted themselves out but how they will line up for the finals series will be determined in the coming week.

Rolleston is in third following a comfortable 65-45 win over Hallswell MA, which along with West Melton has no chance of making the top four.

The finals series’ positions will become a little clearer after this coming weekend’s matches when Rolleston faces Broadfield and Lincoln takes on Halswell A.

Here is a basic list of some the jobs you are likely to carry out on your lifestyle block and the tools need to help.

FencingEven a well set up property will require

fencing maintenance from wear and tear

Tooling up on the lifestyle blockArticle supplied by www.lifestyleblock.co.nz

The machinery and equipment you will need or want on a lifestyle block is directly related to the jobs you are likely to need it for.

or stock and vehicle damage. You will probably find there are always

new fencing projects coming up too as you develop your block.

Having the right tools for this job makes the difference between completing the job with or without tears.

Here is what you need:Hammer with claw head: Treat yourself

to a nice well balanced one.Fencing pliers: What you can't do with

these is not worth talking about. They cut and tie wire knock in staples and then pull them out and much more.

Spade: The best type for fencing is the trenching spade. It has a narrow blade so can fit down a post hole. Get a good and heavy one.

Posthole borer: Type depends on your soil. A mechanical one for a tractor is excellent in free soil but hard work in puggy clay, and dangerous if there are likely to be tree roots around. A simple hand borer with an almost flat face is excellent in clay.

Spinning jenny: This holds wire and

unwinds it as you pull. It can be an elaborate collapsible job, such as those the stock firms sell, or you can make a simple one yourself.

Rammer: This is probably the secret of a good solid fence. The best will be the heaviest with the smallest ramming head. The handle should be solid steel, then it can double as a crowbar.

Saw: A small chainsaw is best. It is easy to carry around and can be used to either clear scrub out of the way or cut the tops off posts and shape stays.

Wire tensioner: This is a kind of lever which has pieces that slot onto the sides of a wire tightener that stays permanently in the fence once the wire is tightened on it.

Chisel: Between 38 and 5Omm wide.

Shelter trimming

Ideally you will have plenty of trees and hedges for shelter. If so, there will always be some maintenance to do.

If you have specific shelter belt species and hedges you will need them trimming regularly by a contractor, it is unlikely that you would invest in a trimmer yourself. However you will have to deal with trimming overhanging branches and fallen trees.

Here is what you need:Chain saw: A petrol driven machine of a

size you can cope with. They come in various sized chains, choose one to suit the size of timber you are likely to be cutting and the weight that you can handle comfortably.

Large bow saw: You will be able to do a lot of small jobs with one of these.

Water system repairs

Fortunately modern water systems are very easy to maintenance and repair as they are made out of alkathene, which is easy to cut and join.

If you are in an area that does not get many frosts, there is no need to lag the pipe to protect it from freezing and bursting. Because of this, you will need very little in the way of tools for your water system.

Here are a couple of essentials:Sharp knife: You will need something for

cutting pipe. Two adjustable crescent spanners: The

size depends on your water system for tightening joins and joints.

Conditioning paddocks

On small blocks it is often necessary to harrow and or top (cut) paddocks to

keep them in good condition free of dung piles and rank grass.

Weeds, such as thistles, ragwort and docks will need dealing with from spring to autumn.Harrows: These are used to spread

manure over a paddock to return it to grazing condition evenly. There are

various different designs, but they are basically a linked, uneven metal device pulled behind a vehicle. They last forever so tend to be bought second hand, though agricultural engineers will make a set for you if you are unable to locate a set.

Topper: If the grazing regime you have leaves you with rank, untidy paddocks at some times of the year, then cutting the longer grass will improve the paddock markedly. If you have a tractor, you will probably be able to hire a topper.

Sprayers and de-weeders: Weeds will need spot or area spraying. If the area is not too large, a backpack sprayer will do the job. It can often be as easy to completely remove the weed though with a small spade.

Start collecting together ideas in a scrapbook or shoe-box. Every time you see something you like in a magazine or book, cut it out or photocopy it and add it to the collection.

Visit shops and websites and get brochures and information sheets on products. Start a dossier of roofing materials, types of exterior claddings and interior linings, joinery, paint, wallpaper, ceilings, appliances, carpets, taps, etc. Keep a note of prices as you go – this will help with budgeting later on.

To help with house design ideas

• Visit show homes, home expos and open homes.

• Drive around new subdivisions and older areas for ideas about exterior design, materials and colours.

• Ask others who have been through this process for recommendations on designers and, if possible, visit homes they have been involved in.

• A skilful designer will be able to work out from talking to you and discussing your ideas what you really like, turning your collage of ideas into a design.

Planning your house designArticle supplied by Consumer NZ

Before you choose someone to design the house, you need to gather ideas of what you want.

Using a group housing companyThese companies usually provide

packages which can include some or all of the following: the section, standard house designs (which can usually be adapted to your requirements – this may add additional cost), finance, project management and construction.

Group housing companies offer a range of standard designs. Some companies will let you change almost anything on the design. Others may not be so keen to alter their standard plans.

Some firms will take care of the entire building process from building consent and local planning compliance to landscaping.

One big advantage of this type of housing is that the price should be exact because you are buying a package (apart from any variations that you ask for after the fixed price has been agreed).

There are also companies whose business it is to sell house plans.

The advantage of using a stock plan is that it is likely to be tried and true and you can view it as a show home or a private home. However, the design won’t have been done specifically for your section, so choose the plan that will work best with the shape, size and contours of your section.

Using a group or kitset housing

company will be cheaper than hiring an architect or other type of designer. However, you may not get the benefit of having a design that entirely meets your specific needs.

To find a group housing company go to these trade organisations:

• Building Industry Federation www.bifnz.co.nz

• Registered Master Builders Federation www.masterbuilder.org.nz

• Certified Builders of New Zealand www.cbanz.co.nz

• Or search the web for individual company websites, or the Yellow Pages.

Design and build buildersSome builders offer a design service,

either drawing the plans themselves or using an architect or designer that they work with to draw the plans.

Builders aren’t usually trained in house design but this option might work for you if you are very clear about the design and specifications. Ask to see examples of their work.

Certain design work must be done or supervised by a licensed building

practitioner. There are two levels of design practice depending on the complexity of the project.

Design your ownYou can of course custom-design your

home to your ideas using a registered architect, an architectural designer or an architectural draughtsperson.

You then need to decide who is going to build and manage the building process. Architects, and sometimes other designers, offer this service.

The advantages of good house design include:

• Making best use of space.

• Making best use of the section.

• Making sure the right materials are selected (for function and style).

• Saving money by providing a home that is energy efficient and maintenance-friendly.

• Having a home that is harmonious to live in, comfortable, convenient, and aesthetically pleasing.

• Having a home that will provide a secure investment and be free from weathertight problems or other serious defects.

• Having a home that will be easier to sell.

When you brief a designer, tell them:

• How many rooms you want (consider the possibility of more children, or perhaps elderly relatives coming to live with you).

• What sort of living spaces you want. Do you entertain regularly? Do you want separate space for the children to hang out? Do you need an office or hobby room? What about decks and outdoor living spaces?

• What you want in the way of bathrooms and kitchen. Do you want ensuites? An industrial-sized kitchen?

• The size of the house. If it is too large to fit comfortably on your section you might have to consider whether you need to build upwards.

• Your garaging requirements.

When a loved pet dies the grief can feel immense. If we’re told, “It was only a cat, get another one,” the pain may be even harder to bear. The relationship with our pet is un-conditional, no strings attached. Our pet loved us no matter what and we loved them in return. He or she may have been our only companion, our “child”, “best mate,” the last link to someone who’s died, or have been with us through a difficult time in our life. We may have saved them from ill-ness or death. If the relationship has been close and we have loved deeply, the grief also, will be deep.Grief is a process, a natural nor-mal response to loss. Just as a river flows to the sea, so too does grief follow its course to healing. This process can be different for each of us and may affect us emo-tionally, physically and spiritually. We may feel heavy with a deep aching sadness, disoriented, over-whelmed, guilty, relieved, angry, anxious, tired. This is all normal.

What helps?Go gently with yourself. Be as kind to yourself as you would to a best friend who is hurting.

It takes time to heal a broken heart. Give yourself permission to grieve. Telling yourself you shouldn’t be feeling this way, only compounds the “struggle”. Grief can be exhausting. Eat healthy food to raise energy levels. Exercise helps, especially when feelings are overwhelming.Find someone who can listen and understand.Write your feelings and thoughts down, as a way of externalising them.Have a memorial service as a way of honouring the relationship, with your pet.Create a memory box. Write mes-sages on it, fill it with photos, a clipping of hair, collar or treasured toys.Ask: What is my pet’s legacy? What did he or she show or teach me? Was it, unconditional love or how to live in the moment? How can I bring these gifts into my life as a way of honouring my pet?You are unique. Follow your own instincts to healing.Further information on grieving the loss of a loved pet can be found at www.lovingtributes.co.nz

Coping with the death of a pet

Last year’s SPCA Cupcake Day raised over $300,000 to help animals in need. This year the event held on Monday, August 24 is set to be bigger and better than ever.

A delicious way to support your local SPCA

It presents an opportunity for people to make a significant contribution to animal welfare in their community, while being involved in an event that is a lot of fun.

SPCA Canterbury Chief Executive Officer, Barry Helem, is looking forward to this year’s event.

“Our SPCA receives no government funding and with costs of over $2 million per annum, we rely heavily on fundraising events such as Cupcake Day, to continue to our work within the Canterbury community.”

The Canterbury SPCA cares for thousands of vulnerable animals every year and works tirelessly to prevent cruelty and encourage the humane treatment of all animals.

This means rescuing animals in trouble and providing them with medical care, love and shelter. It also means prosecuting people who deliberately harm animals, and working with offenders to ensure that it does not happen again.

“We could not continue to help

animals without the outstanding generosity of our incredible volunteers, donors and fundraisers,” Mr Helem says.

“We are extremely grateful for their support. This event really will help us ‘save lives’ and we warmly encourage everyone to get involved and register today.”

There are many ways you can participate in this year’s event. You can register as an individual, school, business or team. For details and registration visit www.spcacupcakeday.co.nz or search for the Cupcake Day Facebook page.

The sweetest fundraiser of the year will see thousands of budding cupcake cooks across New Zealand weighing flour, cracking eggs and raising money for their local SPCA.

The benefits for pet owners are huge and it certainly provides peace of mind.

Routine veterinary care is affordable and most people can budget for this. However, injuries and illnesses may result in unforeseen medical expenses. Pet insurance can help you budget for these unexpected medical expenses.

It is prudent to look at your budget and work out what you need in an insurance policy. There are several companies offering pet insurance policies in New Zealand. Sorting through the various plan choices and options can be daunting and asking your vet is a good start.

Here are some tips to help you through the process.

It is all about you Are you worried about being able to

afford emergency care for accidents

Pet insurance helps deal with the unexpectedby Yolande Howell, BVSc (Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Pet insurance has gained huge popularity overseas in the last decade and it is starting to increase in popularity here in New Zealand with an increasing number of insurance firms offering policies.

or sudden illnesses? Are you worried about paying for medications and tests for ongoing conditions? Some of these may be costly, and this is where pet insurance may help you.

Each insurance company has different benefit packages so it is good to do a little research until you find one that best matches what you want.

Standard plans typically offer cover for illnesses and emergencies - for example treatment for toxin ingestion or car accidents. More comprehensive policies may include day-to-day care such as neutering, health checks, vaccinations and dental procedures etc.

Always read the fine print As an example make sure you know

whether they cover any pre-existing conditions. Also whether the company places age limits on cover and any other exclusions might be important points

to check. Some companies may charge more for certain breeds or if you live in certain areas of the country. Make sure it offers you coverage for any specialty care such as referral to a dermatologist, advance imaging or ophthalmologist.

Avoid surprisesAsk for a breakdown of your premium

or quote. Premiums may increase with the age of the pet. Some companies increase you premiums as you submit claims and some companies may have a high excess per claim.

Check and compare these costs and find one that suits you.

A good insurer should be ‘transparent’ about what they will pay for and how much they will cover.

With a few good frosts to kill off the bugs and seal in the nutrients, the garden is now ready to spring into life once more.

Watch out for weeds that might try to take over dormant beds that are waiting for spring planting.

Prepare your soil by adding some well-rotted manure or compost and give the whole thing a good turn over, spreading around the goodness and freeing up the soil for good drainage.

PlantIndoors in pots or seed trays start

sewing asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, cauliflower, coriander, parsley, silver beet, spinach, thyme.

Those who have greenhouses can have a crack at sewing lettuce, leeks and tomatoes.

While fruit may be the last thing on a gardener’s mind, except perhaps for our citrus friends, now is the perfect time to get planting for future harvests.

Deciduous fruit trees can go in the garden now. These prefer a sheltered spot in full sun shine.

Berry lovers can plant raspberries, blueberries, boysenberries and blackberries at this time also.

Don’t forget to put in some new

strawberry plants. They love a good chilly winter morning, which helps to get their flower buds going.

PruneIf you haven’t pruned your plants yet,

make sure you do so now to promote new growth. Remove any diseased parts and also any dead bits. Wait until summer to prune peach and plum trees.

HarvestBroccoli, cabbage, leeks, lemons,

extends beyond mere culinary delights the garden should be starting to show signs of spring flowers.

Seemingly empty garden beds always seem to surprise with the appearance of long forgotten bulb bloomage such as daffodils, tulips and irises. Nothing is more delightful to the gardener’s nostrils than the fragrant smell of blossom after the lacklustre winter months.

Add to your rose collection now by planting a few new varieties or topping up on some old favourites.

Throw in a couple of lavenders for good measure and you’re sure to have a supply of colour and fragrance to keep you content in the warmer months.
