Dear Badin Alumni and Friends,The importance of Catholic education is as important today as it was 50 years ago. Families desire a faith-based education and understand how a Catholic education pays dividends well into the future. This year Badin High School celebrates the 50th anniversary of Badin’s opening. It is hard to believe that the building on 571 New London Road has been open since 1966. The building definitely does not look its age. We have updated many parts of the building over the years, replaced windows and have added air conditioning to the classrooms. The education the students receive today is vastly different than the one students from 50 years ago experienced. The curriculum has evolved to meet the needs of the current expectations of our students and to prepare them for the experiences they will have in college and

in the workforce. Even with the changes that have occurred, the core values that opened our building, values that were established by our founding schools – Hamilton Catholic and Notre Dame High School – are still alive and flourishing at Badin 50 years later.

We strive every day to inspire young men and women to achieve their personal best, live their faith and lead the future. Our students are challenged to discover their passion and to become the person God calls them to be. Our students have the opportunity to explore career paths through the various core courses and electives. With courses in technology, engineering, art, music, marketing and numerous other options, our students are able to explore careers that may be of interest to them. Our retreat program and service program helps our students in their journey to discovering God’s calling for each of them. We are blessed to work with terrific students who become future leaders in their given vocation.

We continue to meet with alumni and donors for our major gift initiative. The We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe initiative was started to address the needs that have been identified though the strategic planning, campus master plan and feasibility study process. The We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe effort recognizes our history and sets the stage for our next 50 years.

We Remember – the rich history of Hamilton Catholic, Notre Dame and Stephen T. Badin High School. We remember the teachers, leaders and benefactors who made Catholic education a possibility for those of us lucky enough to be alumni.

We Celebrate – the Pride, Spirit, Tradition and Unity of Badin High School and the huge contributions our alumni have made to the local community, the country and the world.

We Believe -- in the importance of Catholic Education and continuing to build on the history of our school for the next 50 years. We believe in the mission and vision of Stephen T. Badin High School.

If you are not aware of all the tremendous opportunities our students have and the success of our alumni, please make sure to look at this Shades of Green, read the electronic alumni news we send out regularly and check us out on our website, Facebook page and other social media sites. We have a lot to be proud of and to celebrate. If you would like to learn more about this initiative, please contact me or Kelli Kurtz, our executive director of advancement, to set up an appointment.

If you ever have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your support and God bless you and your family.

Badin quartet honored by National Merit Corp.Badin High senior David Berg (rear center) was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, putting him in the top 1 percent of students in the country for his outstanding test performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) as a junior. He is now eligible for some of the $33 million in scholarship dollars awarded by the National Merit Corp.

Berg, who also scored a perfect 36 on the ACT college entrance exam, has been admitted to the University of Notre Dame, among other top schools, and plans to major in science or economics in college.

Three other Badin seniors were named National Merit Commended Students, which places them in the top five percent of the more than 1.6 million students in the country who took the PSAT in the fall of 2015. From left are Aaron Helson, Alexandra Hensley and Kaitlyn Dick.

Berg is a graduate of Queen of Peace School, Helson from Immanuel Lutheran, Hensley from St. Peter in Chains and Dick from Sacred Heart.

“These are outstanding students and their performance on the PSAT underscores that,” Badin Principal Brian Pendergest said. “We’re proud of their excellent work and know that they have bright futures ahead of them.”

Matt & Elaina McCormick were just what the doctor ordered to rejuvenate the music program at Badin High School. Now in their 6th year of a “unique and fun” program, the McCormicks wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Our program in general is a lot more forward thinking and a lot more open to new ideas than a lot of programs are,” Matt said. “It’s not

necessarily better than other programs; it’s just different.”

Interest in marching band and choir had bottomed out when the pair showed up at Badin for the 2011-12 school year – and in this case, necessity was the mother of invention. Thus was born the popular Badin Rocks Ensemble, which puts all instruments and voices together in what is an enhanced pep band with some 50 members. They play at all football and boys basketball games, and are on the back of a long flatbed truck for the Reds Opening Day parade. They just don’t march.

“It’s been awesome to be at Badin,” Elaina said. “The student body is very enthusiastic about the band, and you don’t find that everywhere. We’re able to have fun every single day. The community as a whole is so supportive of what we do, it makes it that much more fun to do it.”

“If you take all of the music classes that are offered at Badin,” she added, “when

McCormicks make music FUN at Badinyou graduate, you will have the skills necessary to be a musician for life.”

The McCormicks have added classes throughout their tenure – Badin Rocks, Beginning and Advanced Guitar, Music Technology, Piano, Jazz Band, and now a Music Appreciation class that will earn college credit, as well as a new Choir program. In addition, the McCormicks are after school for some two hours each day offering extra music work in those various disciplines for no additional cost.

“We love being here,” said Matt, who is an accomplished guitarist and sound engineer. “There’s no doubt in my mind that I could make a living playing music somewhere else, but I look forward to coming back to Badin every year. Teaching music is what I was called to do.”

Elaina taught music for five years at Franklin High, and is a talented singer who performs with two groups and also cantors at Our Lady of Victory in Delhi Township each week.

“I didn’t know if this kind of program could exist, but it’s been a great solution for us,” Elaina said. “Music needs to be cool and it needs to be fun, and that’s what we offer.”The McCormicks were recommended to Badin by the business of former BHS band director Chuck Lauterbach, and the pairing has been a blessing for Badin.

“The best thing that can happen through our program is that students get an outlet for their musical interests,” Matt said. “If they want to do it, we want to help them do it. Music is fun, it’s productive, it’s mentally stimulating and it’s rewarding.”

ART&sole Mrs. Sarah Daniels and art students have created 75 pairs of custom painted shoes, distributed 55 pairs to the Community Meal Center in Hamilton and are delivering 20 pairs to One Way Farm in March through the ‘Art & Sole’ Project funded by both the Hamilton and Fairfield Community Foundations.

“It is great to have a talent, but a far greater thing to put that talent it to work; even better to share with deserving souls in our own communities. I try to live by this motto as well and instill this into my students,” says Mrs. Daniels, “What you do in this life matters. We are all here by God’s grace. We are all his children. To be able to create customized shoes and hand deliver them is humbling. To see their faces light up and the gratitude in their voice is why we do this.”

Jack Kirsch ’44 was actively involved on the ground floor in order for Badin High School to reach its 50th anniversary year.

Kirsch, the former city manager of Hamilton and a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame (2000) as well as the Hall of Honor (2016), was part of the initial fundraising drive in 1962 to build what was referred to as a “new co-institutional school.”

Kirsch was a special guest speaker at the annual Heritage Mass in October and explained how Badin High School had come about.

The new “co-institutional” school was announced in 1962 – it was a merger of Hamilton Catholic (all boys) and Notre Dame (all girls), but the classes would still be single gender according to the original thinking.

On September 1, 1962, there was a 1-day fund drive, Kirsch recalled. Ten parishes were involved, with 1,400 people serving on various

committees. Fundraisers, including Kirsch, went door-to-door that Sunday afternoon to request donations – and reported back with an impressive $1.365 million in pledges. People were home that afternoon, because on a Sunday in 1962, stores were closed.

It was “problematic” to find a site, Kirsch explained. In 1964, the Archdiocese purchased the 22-acre Wagner farm on New London Road for the new school. Kirsch pointed out that the building of a new Columbia Bridge across the Great Miami River in 1965-66, and the addition of sidewalks on New London Road, was critical for access to Badin High and made the school viable.

Badin has been as large as 1,100 students over the years and as small as 450 students, but the foresight and dedication of people like Jack Kirsch has led to five decades of excellence on New London Road.
