Friday17th May

Dear Parents,

Year 3 ‘La Fattorietta trip’

This week, Year 3 went to visit 'La Fattorietta', an educational farm in the centre of Rome, as part of our Science topic on feeding relationships. The students had the opportunity to make their own pizza dough, to knead the dough and finally to eat the tasty pizza bianca! They also met a variety of farmyard animals, including Nando the pig and Ernesto the donkey. We were lucky that the weather stayed dry so the students could also enjoy a picnic lunch outdoors. It was a fantastic day out, full of fun and learning. A big thank you to Ms Ponder and Mrs Thompson for assisting, and well done to all our Year 3 students for a successful day out. Year 4 Villa Adriana ‘Villa Adriana is an enchanting place. Full of mystery

and beauty. Our visit last Friday, was like diving into

the past and we really enjoyed the day. The Roman

Emperor Hadrian, had constructed this villa as a

place to relax from everyday life in Rome and we

learnt a lot about the structure of the many buildings.

Ms Lucinda Leach

The picturesque landscape was stunning to see and we felt privileged to feel part of all this cultural

history.’ Carlo, Emma and Lavinia (4L)

'Last Friday the sun shone and Year 4 visited the ancient site of Villa Adriana! It was an exciting trip for all the children with absolutely beautiful views. We were shown all the different purposes of the Villa including the multiple bath houses and the theatre! The tour guide was very informative and really helped us all with our ongoing topic on the Romans and Emperor Hadrian. Mr Liam Barker Here are some quotes from the children, which encapsulate the day:

"The trip at Villa Adriana was very inspiring and when the tour guide was explaining some facts it brought me back in time." - Alessandro "Villa Adriana was gigantic! In the pools there where turtles and fishes. I was surprised to learn that Villa Adriana used to be open to everybody! It was so lovely." - Margherita "Hadrian's Villa was super interesting. The guide told us fantastic facts. It was enormous!" - Giacomo

Maths is Everywhere! This week has been an important week at Southlands: our first ever maths week! It has been amazing to see the wonderful activities across the Primary School proving that maths does not always have to take place in the classroom! Here is a list of some of the activities that have been taking place! Nursery and Reception children worked in teams and followed a sequence. Then they hunted for the hidden shapes in the garden and made patterns together. On another day, Nursery children used natural objects to trace numbers drawn in chalk on the tiles. Reception children had to count the objects on a card, find the hidden number and then build a tower of bricks to match the digit. Year 1 and 2 had a treat: they mixed classes and got to enjoy four very special lessons! With Ms Easby, the children investigated tally marking in the garden. Mrs Wilson had the children working hard on their spy skills: they had to crack the mathematical codes to find a hidden message. Ms Crory also spent time outside; the children had to find shapes and patterns in the garden and with Mr Thompson, the children got very creative by finding fractions while making sandwiches! Year 3 were practising their mathematical skills by measuring and weighing ingredients to create a healthy peanut butter flapjack! They worked hard and got very messy; Mr Gray and Ms Wells assure me that the results were delicious! Year 4 made some beautiful symmetrical paintings with Mr Barker in pairs by using mirrors to finish their partner's painting. With Ms Leach, the children investigated probability with a giant pack of playing cards, using the game 'higher or lower'. Year 5 and Year 6 participated in a variety of activities across the week! With Miss Taylor they made some wonderful wrappers for chocolate bars, investigating the use of nets to make 3D shapes. With Miss Armitage, students had to build the strongest mathematical tower using only spaghetti and marshmallows. The students got very sticky but were exceptionally proud of the results: the winning team from 6H made a tower, which was 48cm tall! Ms Cahall took the students back in time by investigating the history of maths and teaching the children about maths in other cultures, for example, investigating the Chinese number system. With Mr Hough, the children made some wonderful maths mazes that were drawn on the courtyard and have been enjoyed all week by students up and down the school!

Throughout this week there has also been an estimation competition running! A special mention to 4L who were amazing mathematicians and one of the first classes to think logically about how many sweets could actually fit inside the jar! Congratulations to the winners: enjoy your sweets! KS1 - Emanuele, 2T (estimating the right answer exactly: 47) LKS2 - GiacComo, 4B (who also estimated the exact number: 74) UKS2 - Ilaria, 5T (who managed to estimate the closest number of 603 to the answer of 671) The enthusiasm from both the students and the teachers has been unparalleled and I could not be more grateful to everyone who has participated. It has also been wonderful working with the secondary maths team to ensure that this has been a whole school extravaganza. Thank you also to the parents for helping the students make some wonderful mathematical costumes, the children looked amazing! We hope to see you all again for another successful maths week next year!

Maths in Senior School In coordination with the Primary School Maths team, it has been wonderful to see our Senior School students get so actively involved in Maths Week. With a variety of activities and challenges each day, both in and out of lessons, students from all years 7-13 have participated with great enthusiasm, teamwork and mathematical thinking. From a mathematical leapfrog challenge, to tower building, from an outdoor Maths maze to problem solving with cups and capacity, from mathematical art and patterns in nature to deciphering and breaking mathematical codes, culminating with a very competitive Maths Kahoot Quiz, we have been blown away by the efforts of our students (and teachers!). Our Year 7 and Year 8 students also competed in a Team Maths Challenge during lessons with the winners to be announced next week. A huge thank you and well done to everyone who has taken part. Mr Strang Head of KS3 Maths The senior school have had a fantastic Maths week, with challenges

every lunch and morning registration. Everyone from year 7 to year 13 got

involved, with many teachers also scratching their heads over the

challenges. It has been fantastic to see the resilience in our students

when they are faced with problems to be solved. Massive thanks to Mr

Strang for all the work he has put in to the success of this week. Mrs

Carly Barber, Head of Senior School

Exams in Progress

IGCSE and IB exams are in full flow this week. We have been impressed with the calm and confident approach all of our year 9, 11 and 13 students have taken in this, their opportunity to show how much they know. This can be a nerve-wracking time and the whole school community is making an effort to support them by moving quietly around the school between lessons and using alternative play areas during the exams to help them do their best. Thank you to all the staff, parents and students for supporting students in the best conditions for success. Mrs Carly Barber, Head of Senior School eTwinning During the month of March, Southlands started to take part of the eTwinning project. The MFL department joined the eTwinning community in order to enrich learning and motivation of students and access ready-made resources in different languages. The eTwinning action is an initiative of the European Commission that aims to encourage European schools to collaborate using Information and Communication Technologies by providing the necessary infrastructure.

eTwinning offers a platform for staff and students to communicate, collaborate, develop projects, share and, in short, feel and be part of the most exciting learning community in Europe.

Students of KS4 and 5 at Southlands have a school partner in France and can store and share their work or comments online. They work online with students from France through the use of different languages taught at Southlands such as English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Sports Days in Primary

Please find below a list of forthcoming Sports Days for the Primary School to which you are cordially

invited.

Senior School Year 7 – 9 Summer Uniform

With a change in uniform for the approaching summer months we would like to remind parents of the

uniform policy. We appreciate that it can be difficult to obtain necessary items straight away and ask

that where parents need additional time they send their son/daughter to school with a note.
