Special Opportunity to GiveAs part of the "Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015" (The "PATH Act" ), each year, any person who is at least 70½ years of age may make direct charitable gifts of up to $100,000 from a11 IRA accounts without having to report that IRA distribution as taxable income on their federal income tax return. These annual IRA distributions are normally referred to as required minimum distributions ("RMD").Directing all or part of your annual RMD to a nonprofit like Prince of Peace provides you with an excellent opportunity to make a gift that will benefit the Church and will reduce your annual taxable income. To Qualify:• You must be at least 70 ½ year of age when you make your gift.• Transfers must be made directly from a traditional IRA account (normally by your IRA Administrator) to Prince of Peace. Funds that are received by you and then subsequently contributed to a charity or nonprofit do NOT qualify. Gifts from a 401k, 403b, SEP and other plans do NOT qualify.• Your gift must come to us outright - it cannot be used to establish a life-income arrangement or support a donor-advised fund.• Although the distribution will not increase your current taxable income, this gift will also not generate a charitable deduction for income tax purposes. (Therefore, it will not be included on your annual tax receipt from us.)

Annual Baby Bottle CollectionThank you for supporting our Sanctity of Life Ministries by donating your filled baby bottles. Please return the bottles to the office by Sunday, November 10. Sanctity of Life asks that ALL bottles be returned whether empty or full. It's important the the bottles are returned as there is a cost for SLM to replace bottles. In the past we have raised over 2000 dollars for Sanctity of life and we hope to make an even greater contribution this year. Visit the website for more information: https://slmgetinvolved.org. Operation Christmas ChildNovember 1-24It’s time to fill shoeboxes full of gifts to bless boys and girls in need around the world, while introducing them to the love of Jesus! Please use one of the cardboard shoeboxes on the display table in the Narthex or a shoebox of your own. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. A $9 gift donation per shoebox

is requested to help cover shipping and other ministry costs. This may be placed inside the shoebox or paid online to Operation Christmas Child. Due to custom regulations, toothpaste and candy are no longer allowed in the shoebox gifts. The last day to turn on your shoebox is Sunday, November 24th. Due to your generosity, we collected over 180 boxes last year. This year we would like to collect 200 boxes. Thank you in advance for your participation. Olivia Frego 703-313-7640 [email protected].

HOLY COMFORTERS QUILT SALENovember 16th through December 1stThe Holy Comforters quilts will be on display for purchase during the above dates. Look for them in the Sanctuary and the west hallway closest to the Sanctuary (take a right turn at the water fountain). Instructions to purchase a quilt will be posted with the displays. The funds raised from this sale will help defray costs in the making of the quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Thank you in advance for helping The Holy Comforters with this worthwhile and fun endeavor. Check us out at [email protected]. We will resume meeting January 2nd, room 27, 9:00-3:00. POP Hypothermia WeekDecember 29, 2019 – January 4, 2020Prince of Peace has been partnering with FACETS to serve our homeless neighbors for 10 years. Each year we open our church home for one week, to those who need a warm, safe place to sleep. The shelter opens at 5:00 pm each evening. Guests receive a hot meal prepared by our meal teams and enjoy fellowship with our members. We also provide breakfast the next morning and a sack lunch to go. The shelter closes at 7:30 am each morning. We typically serve over 250 guests throughout the week. This year we are allowing guests to stay all day on New Year’s Day so we will also need volunteers to come in throughout the day.How You Can Serve? • Shelter Volunteers: Volunteers make the week happen and jump in wherever needed. • Youth Volunteer Teams: Our youth teams support the Sunday Set up and daily cleaning of the fellowship hall and sleeping rooms. • Food Donations: The week depends on the generosity of those who shop for and donate the many food items needed to serve our guests. Choose a few or as many items on the list and deliver on the date noted.

Don't miss out on this excellent opportuinty, sign up with the link below!

Warm Clothing NeededWe will be collecting warm clothing for our Hypothermia shelter guests. Please consider donating new or gently used jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters, pants, jeans, scarves, gloves, etc. All sizes appreciated, for adults only, men and women. The collection box will be in the narthex during the month of December. As you consider gifts for family and friends, please consider a gift of clothing or outer wear for our Hypothermia guests who could use something new or new to them. Sue Sweet at [email protected]

Women of the Word (WoW) Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30am, Fellowship Hall It’s not too late to join WoW Wednesdays! Women are welcome at any time to attend an intergenerational group of women for devotion, fellowship, and small-group

study. This year, we have 4 small-group studies to choose from, plus music, snacks, and fun. Free childcare is provided. Our four fall studies are: Breathe by Priscilla Shirer, led by Georgette Stuparitz; God of Creation by Jen Wilkin, led by Carol Schmidt; Life Together by Dietrich Bonheoffer, led by Asia Reed; and Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. Whitney, led by Jennifer Gross. If you’ve been looking to become more ROOTED in Christ, this is the place to start! [email protected]

Women of the Word SundaysSundays, 9:45am--10:45am, room 13 downstairsA welcoming group of women will be studying Ann Spangler’s book, Praying the Names of Jesus. This book focuses on helping readers understand the biblical context in which the names and titles of Jesus were revealed, in order to gain a more intimate knowledge of His plans for their lives. Each chapter is

independent of the previous ones, so come on down and join us for a time of fellowship and study. Mary Elizabeth Sorenson [email protected]

Faith ShapersTuesday, December 10, 7-9pm, room 21Faith Shapers will discuss A Listening Life: Embracing Attentiveness in a World of Distraction by Adam McHugh. In this noisy, distracting world, it is difficult to truly hear. People talk past each other, eager to be heard but somehow deaf to what is being said. Listening is an essential skill for healthy

relationships, both with God and with other people. Author Adam McHugh places listening at the heart of our spirituality, our relationships and our mission in the world. Listening shapes us and equips us to be more attuned to people in pain and more able to minister to those in distress. Please come and hear what God is doing in you and the world. [email protected]

Age 55+? Come Be A Sparkler!

Who are the Sparklers? They’re a group of POP members and friends that formed 21 years ago (Mar 7,1997 by Pastor Lohrman), open and free to Everyone aged 55+, married or single, retired or still working, who want to sparkle or add sparkle to their lives.

Sparklers meet from September through mid-June for a one hour Bible Study (NO homework!) on Mondays (except holidays) from 11:00 AM to Noon, currently led by Pastor Joe Schruhl, to grow spiritually in the Word and in fellowship. They also gather the 3rd Friday of the month for a potluck lunch or a special outing somewhere to celebrate a season or theme, socialize, learn, have fun connecting, and laugh. It’s not necessary to attend both the Bible study and the monthly luncheon, or even be present every month, to be a Sparkler. You are always welcome!

Monday Bible study is in the comfy chairs of the church library (room 26), always accompanied by coffee/tea, and a tasty snack. The monthly luncheon is often in the church fellowship hall, or may be in someone's home, or at a local restaurant. Special lunch and program outings are at church or in NOVA or DC or beyond, with music and/or presentations by entertainers and subject or service experts in the community. In past years Sparklers have enjoyed day trips to the Bavarian Chef in Fredericksburg for Oktoberfest, to Bethlehem, PA, and to Radio City Music Hall in NYC for Christmas and Easter shows, and to DC for concerts and museum tours.

So, if you are 55+, please except an open invitation to SPARKLE a little brighter! And please, invite your friends and neighbors too! Contact Roger Burd (703-971-5957) [email protected] if you are interested!

Prince of Peace Lutheran School Receives Accreditation for Another Five Years!Sunday, October 19, was a special day as Lisa Wentzel and Gary Leeling accepted the Accreditation award for Prince of Peace School, presented by Deaconess Sally Hiller from the SED office pictured here. Every five years the school goes through an accreditation and review process and this past year we were happy to say that the NLSA -"National Lutheran School Accreditation" team has again rewarded us as a school of excellence.

The Prince of Peace Bell Choir is Back! The bell choirs are back and looking for members! If you’d like to contribute to worship and build fellowship, this could be the ministry for you! There are opportunities for kids (5th grade and older) and adults. Basic music reading ability is required, but no handbell experience is necessary. Music ranges from traditional to contemporary and the bells will ring at all three services over the course of the year. Rehearsals will be Sunday evenings beginning in late October, but the time is TBD—once we know who’s interested, we’ll work to

deconflict with the other choirs. If you or your child are interested, please contact director Kristin Panzenhagen at [email protected].

Dear PoPers,We’ve been living here in Whitefish for almost two months now, but I still haven’t gotten use to saying, “Howdy!” We’ve become real Montanans in other ways, however. Glenda discovered “Partners in Climb” hiking club and has had me on a couple of 10+ mile mountaintop hikes already. She also heard about a couple of huckleberry patches that weren’t too picked over yet, so we picked enough to have huckleberry waffles once or twice. We’ve also been to a Metropolitan Opera simulcast, a couple of symphony concerts and a hootenanny. The folks at St. Peter Lutheran have received us very warmly, and the District President drove up from Billings to take me to breakfast. In addition to preaching, I’ve been leading three Bible studies each week since Labor Day. For

Reformation Sunday, they even let me chant the traditional liturgy. We’re very happy here in the mountains of Montana, but we do miss our friends at Prince of Peace. Thank you so much for all you’ve done for us over the years, and for your gifts, help, and prayers as you sent us venturing off on this new season of our lives.

God bless y’all. Pastor Tim & Glenda

Oktoberfest Thank you! Thank you to our Oktoberfest Leadership Team and all the volunteers who gave of their time and heart to this year's Oktoberfest neighborhood block party! We are so grateful for your service. It's estimated that over 500 people from the community attended in addition to our POP and school families. The love of Jesus was on the move in the neighborhood! We want to especially give glory to God and thank the POP Communications Team who did an exceptional job of putting out the Oktoberfest message! And thank you to our members who invited neighbors and friends. We pray these relationships will be strengthened and nurtured in Christ in the weeks ahead. A final thank you goes out to our Oktoberfest partners: Giant, Cardinal Plaza Shell, Papa John's pizza, Ledos Pizza, Safe Harbor Christian Counseling, Bogacki Dental, Cosmo Cleaners, Positive Image, Title Boxing Club, Afghan Kabob, Scoops 2 U, Faces by Arla, Lowell's Garden Patch, Milano's, Thrivent and Powerfull Fitness. Please frequent and support these neighborhood businesses. We look forward to the 2020 Oktoberfest!

In Him,

Craig and Sue

ECHO Holiday MealsIn addition to providing practical, basic-needs assistance, ECHO conducts a Holiday Meal Program to bring cheer to struggling people at Thanksgiving or Christmas. In order to do that, we seek help from groups or individuals to purchase and deliver either the actual groceries for a festive meal, or food store gift cards appropriate for family size, to one or more local families. If you are interested, please contact our congregation’s ECHO Representative, Andrew Poe, at [email protected] who will then supply you with the name, address, and family size, plus guidelines for gift cards or grocery items for the family you will be assisting. It will be helpful to know by December 2 for a Christmas meal.
