A lot of wind...

Britain is one of the windiest places in the world...

There is hardly a day where there isn't wind... in one place or another...

The Footprint Trust wants to see this natural resource used...

Wind was one of the first forms of energy used by humans...

The earliest record of a ship

under sail is depicted on an Egyptian pot dating back to 3200BC.

These sailboats usually only had one square sail and were made of cotton.

What makes wind?

Wind is not complicated!

Warm air rises, that’s how hot air balloons work

When hot air rises, cooler air rushes in to fill the space it leaves, making wind.

At height, the air goes from the warmer place to the cooler place.  At the seaside on a hot day have you felt the sea breeze?

The air over the land heats up more than the air over the sea and rises, and the cooler air that comes in to fill the space it leaves is what creates the ‘sea breeze’

The first windmills

The first practical windmills were recorded in eastern Persia (Iran) in the 9th century...

Wind power...is nothing new... Windmills, as we know

them, were developed in Holland in about 1390.

They became popular in England and during the 18th and 19th centuries…

At peak the England had some 10,000 windmills!

We have been using wind power for a long time...

The really eco way of drying your clothes...

Modern wind turbines have been around for about 30 years...

Like all technology they

are being improved all the time...

Wind power supplies 10% of our electricity...

There are over 3,000 wind turbines operating in the UK...

The power of turbines

Other electricity stations use coal, gas or nuclear energy to produce steam which powers large turbines.

Wind turbines use wind rather than steam to make them work...

Others use steam…

Coal, oil, biomass

and nuclear power stations use steam to turn the turbines around…

…into electricity

The turbines turn motors which then generate electricity…

Clean energy with no pollution...

The only noise here is

wind, the nearby road and songbirds in the hedge...

Future energy for the UK

The UK needs a mix of renewable and cleaner energy to replace fuels that are running out and are causing pollution to our planet...
