    There are precious promises in the Scriptures to those who with patience wait upon the Lord. We all desire an immediate answer to our prayers, and we are tempted to become discouraged if our prayer is not immediately answered. Now my experience has taught me that this is a great mistake. The delay is for our special benefit. Our faith has a chance to be tested to see whether it is true, sincere, or changeable like the waves of the sea. We must bind ourselves upon the altar with the strong cords of faith and love, and let patience have her perfect work. Faith strengthens through continual exercise. {OHC 134}

    Take a break...

    Your Feedback, Views and Opinions

    Emmas DeskA note from

I have the worst luck ever. First it was my old reliable truck packing a sad and then, just last Thursday, I broke my new nose of eight months.

I had originally smashed it two years ago by taking a head to the face playing soccer (I swear she did it on purpose). It was a real mess, and my plas-tic surgeon did a fantastic job it was better than the original!

Soccer is a sport that I abso-lutely love. I was roped into it a couple of years ago by my good friend Kaitlin, and hang out for competition days. It is a fan-tastic social sport, and I count my soccer team as family.

I took this season off, as I didnt want to jeopardise the new schnoz and I certainly didnt plan on getting hooked into summer soccer. But it is like an addiction and I soon found myself at the Tuakau fields, playing a couple of games. Being mixed soccer, you are up against both boys and girls. I get so hungry for the ball that I dont really watch what the opposition player is doing and tend to put my body on the line, literally. It was the

loud crack and shooting pains in behind my eyes that I knew instantly it was broken again. Also the way Georgina came running off the field to grab her phone for a picture was a dead giveaway that it wasnt good news.

Safe to say this is forced re-tirement from the sport, and just when I was at the peak of a very promising football career! I am hoping that my plastic surgeon wont be too mad that I mucked up his nose when I see him in January 2016.

I have gained a sidekick this last week, Billie the Kid. The wonderful Billie Douglas has joined our team, and she hasnt been scared away yet! Keep an eye out for her stories in this weeks issue, as she has written several great articles.

The countdown is on and we only have two more pa-pers left for 2015! It is exciting, and maybe a little bit stressful, times ahead for our office over the next two weeks, but the break over the festive season will be well worth it.

    EmmaWelcome Billie

Hi my name is Tim, and I WAS a social media addict. Its hard to believe that just a smidgen over a decade ago Facebook didnt even exist in our lives. Nor did YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat or the long list of other ways for us to share photos of our lunch. For the most part, social media has influenced our society in a positive manner. Particularly from a business point of view, it is essential to embrace any new means to communicate directly to customers.

You either embrace the new technology or be swallowed whole. But for all the good things it has given us, there is a fair share of negative points. Take this whole circle of friends you have. You may have easily over a thousand on Facebook but when it comes to your car breaking down on the Puni straight, how many of them are true enough friends to come to your rescue? And how about the Sympathy baiter? We all know one of these people posting vague tales of woe in the hopes of landing concerned responses. And lets not forget those keyboard warriors, the bullies of cyber space. While they act like Jake the Muss online, they are more likely to be Pee Wee Herman in person.

And how about that Paparazzo - the inappropriate photo taggers at parties that show you half naked pashing a bottle of Jagermeister. By the time you have woken up, half your followers including your Mum have seen it and

passed comment. It is hard not to be caught up in this online community fuelled by vanity, narcissism and shonky grammar. Amongst all the tumultuous chaos of shenanigans, hashtags and selfies it suddenly hit me that there is lot more to life then refreshing your newsfeed for the next two second laugh.

That epiphany actually came earlier this year while bedside with my gravely ill grandmother. It was simply beautiful and beautifully simple.

Our nana Marjorie was the matriarch of our family and enjoyed such a rich life. She had lived through the Second World War, witnessed man landing on the moon, the invention and discontinuance of the cassette tape, and a constant stream of revolution in society. As she lay in the hospice surrounded by the three adoring generations of family that succeed her, Facebook and Twitter had escaped our consciousness. Our family bonded in a way I hadnt experienced in a very long time. We chatted about funny memories from our childhood, future plans and ultimately who was going to bags nanas stuff when she did cark it. Suddenly it felt as though life had clarity and meaning once again. I dont believe that anything the online realm offers will ever supersede the feeling of the good company of your family and friends. Perhaps the world needs a little less likes and lot more love.

Remember the good old days when you could sit together around the house and not one family member was immersed in their phone or tablet, distracted from their very own presence and surroundings? No, neither do I, but I did read an article about it on Facebook the other day.

Inspiration from a dream winsll Kayla Shaw from Pu-ni School has taken out the Baci Short Story com-petition for 2015.

The eight year olds story was selected from hundreds of entries from Aucklands low de-cile schools.

She will receive an iPad and the school will re-ceive $5000 worth of li-brary books.

Kayla was shocked with the win, but says the iPad will be put to good use.

My iPod has just bro-ken, so I am very thankful to have won a new iPad.

The Baci Short Sto-ry competition is aimed at encouraging creativ-ity in students 11 years and under from low de-cile schools. The eligible schools are Decile 1 to 5.

The theme for the story this year was You turned the key in the lock and opened the door. To your horror, you saw.

Quiet Kayla said that she had drawn inspira-tion for her story from a dream.

Kaylas imagination certainly lived up to that

challenge with deranged headless Barbie dolls, creepy rooms and lots of smashing and crashing, said Dr Sharad Paul of the Baci Trust.

One of our teach-ers entered the students from her year 3 and 4 class into the competition as an opportunity to share their wonderful narra-

tive work. Also to grasp the concept that when we write we need to think of our audience developing ideas and imagery that will involve them said the Headmaster of Puni School Haydon Brill.

It is great for our school to have this ac-knowledgement and we are so proud of Kayla.

Principal, Haydon Brill, Kayla Shaw, and Dr Sharad Paul, congratulating Kayla on her win.

    RAD Roadsigns Victory

Pictured from left; Jakobb Mills, Brooke Cassidy, Monique Shuker, Sam Yelchich, Georgia Kendall

Its been a crazy journey for Waiuku College Young Enterprise group RAD Roadsigns this year. But, at the Young Enterprise Scheme 2015 National Awards in Wellington on Wednesday, December 9, they were rewarded with the HSBC National Award for Excellence in Sales and Marketing.

ll During the day the regional finalists competed for the National Company Award with a five minute presentation to a Dragons Den panel. The competi-tion was of a very high calibre and CEO Sam Yelchich said that one of the highlights was meeting all the oth-er teams and hearing their pitch.

The place was buzzing with excitement and with so many inspirational people in one room (including Te Radar the MC) there was an awesome vibe. Their busi-ness, RAD Roadsigns are a series of clocks made from a range of decommissioned road signs. The signs can-not be recycled due to their reflective surfaces, which saw the team create the motto upcycling the unrecy-

clable. Throughout the year the team surpassed busi-ness objectives set, with the most rewarding recent-ly being a memorial created on the grounds of Wai-uku College in remembrance of past student, Nata-sha Strydom.

Although the team of Year 13 Waiuku College Busi-ness Studies students are going their separate ways next year, CEO Sam Yelchich plans to continue the business into 2016. Overall this year has been a wild ride that we will most certainly never forget. Its not al-ways been easy and weve learnt so much but it is an experience we would definitely recommend for future students. The people we have met along the road have made this whole experience what it is and turned us into the company we are today, and we owe thanks to so many people for their support.

If you are looking for a unique piece of Aotearoa for Christmas, the signs are available at the Waiuku Christ-mas Display, or you can make contact via their Face-book page.

Theft of dinghy disappointingStu Muir and his wife, Kim Jobson, have spent the last five years restoring several hundred hectares of estuarine swamp near the mouth of the mighty Waikato River to its pristine state.

    Emma [email protected]

The wetland borders their 400 acre dairy farm in Aka Aka, and the couple have the support from local Iwi, Aka Aka School and the Waikato River Au-thority to continue on with the resto-ration project. This has seen Stu and Kim extensively complete pest con-trol, channel clearance and planting. However, at the beginning of Decem-ber, the Muir family discovered their dinghy and ferret traps had been sto-len.It was really disappointing, especial-ly when the majority of the time it was the kids taking part and ownership of our restoration project. Just recently, I had over 30 children using that boat, going up and down the river, learn-ing about our environment and sus-tainability. So really they have stolen it from the kids, explained Stu.

It has been described as a rollercoaster ride for Waiukus Nick King, as his cafe has just won the overall Peoples Choice Award at the Cafe of the Year competition

ll Nicks Cafe was selected out of over 800 cafes, a result that has Nick astounded.

The support that we have received has been mind blowing. The community got so behind us in the com-petition that we were able to beat every other cafe in the country. Im so ridiculously happy. The Post was able to catch up with Nick last week, and discuss his winning methods and the secrets to his success.

Stu explained that the dinghy was a Star-craft model, and has a wine cork as a bung. We just want them back. Any information would be much appreciated.

When Karin Tempelhoff first began karate as a five year old for self defence, it wasnt a sport that she instantly liked.

Now, the Pukekohe resident has just competed in the World Goju Ryu Karate Championships U50 Divi-sion, and won.

Karin never thought that she would continue on with the sport after taking a break.

However after moving to New Zealand when she was 14 years old, she was reintroduced to the sport. Now the talented competitor has many National and Inter-national wins and placings under her belt.

Not only has Karin represented New Zealand in the National Karate Team, she has also won and placed in many Australian competitions, and is currently aim-ing for the World Karate Federation Championships in Austria next year.

While she enjoys the competition side of Karate, Karin says there are several other reasons why she re-connected with the sport and continues to enjoy it.

I love the discipline Karate teaches you. It is real-ly great for children, and has great social aspect to it. Quite often you will find parents entering their chil-dren for lessons, and then shortly after, they will join as well, says Karin.

    Championship win for Karin

Karin Tempelhoff (centre), a national karate title winner and now coach at the Henderson Dojo.

Karin is now training at the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Henderson, West Auckland and has currently taken on a coaching role at the Henderson Dojo.

It started off just helping several of the girls at competitions and it has be-come an incredibly rewarding role. I

never thought I would enjoy coaching this much, and it is really great to see my charges progress.

I am really looking forward to their up and coming competitions, as several are in the New Zealand team, and to see how far they can go.

We find strength and truth in His Word, His Word Alone...www.hisword.nz

In this Article we will explore something that I have noticed more clearly the longer I contemplate and ponder on this, so here we go. Revelation 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Zion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Fathers name written in their foreheads.

Revelation 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads. In Bible understanding, foreheads equate to your thoughts, intentions, focus; basically who you are and where your roots or base camp is, which is who you are and where you belong, Family Home. This depicts all Gods kids, and they are all back Home for the grandest Reunion ever conceived, so are you going to be part of Gods Family and present and accounted for, or shut outside the door to life, lost and dead?

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 8:23 And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body. Romans 9:4 Who are Israelites; to whom [pertaineth] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service [of God], and the promises; Galatians 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Isaiah 43:7 [Even] every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

John 17:6-13 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have

given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received [them], and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we [are]. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. Luke 3:38 Which was [the son] of Enos, which was [the son] of Seth, which was [the son] of Adam, which was [the son] of God.

So how do we get our heads around this issue; well thats easy, we start at the very beginning. In Luke 3:38 we have that every Human Being ever past present or future is part of Gods Family, well that is until Satan and Sin comes along and droves of deceived people just like the Prodigal Son, head for the Pig Pen (it is certainly not what they were conned to believe would happen and the end results were not promoted to be like this either), so the deceived leave their Heavenly Father for a new Substitute Dad and kingdom.

Wise people are never really Tempted to leave the safety of Fathers Home; and those who then come to their senses quickly get up and head homeward. This 180 degree shift in focus in the Hebrew understanding is what is called Repentance, the turning from what has turned out to be very sour empty promises, to come back home to the assurance and reality of Fathers House and Heaven, with Father always waiting at the door to reinstate those who come humbly home to him. We have this in John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

So from this we discover that if you have repented, forsaken and turned permanently from Sin; and are now In Christ and Christ in you as Paul so often writes, you are then Christs, also you are the child of Father God, as Jesus Christ and Father God are one. Back to our opening verses, living In Christ means you are living in harmony with Every word from the mouth of God (Matt 4:4), that means that Father Gods name is written within you as you think and contemplate Heavenly things all the time. This then proves that you are really In Christ and that Fathers Name is written in your Character by your thoughts, deeds and actions, you are what is seen by all around you as a Genuine Christian.

Dear Reader; please will you commit to living In Christ and your sins all confessed and forsaken, covered by the Blood of the Lamb, and the Name of Father God written clearly in your forehead as a token and an evidence that your Salvation is real and not some phoney clone look alike. Let us use this Christmas Season to re-align ourselves and get back onto Gods Heavenly Highway, for shortly the redeemed will actually stand before Father God.

It will feature a diverse range of exciting interna-tional acts from Franklins home-grown talent.

Jazz artist Andrew Faleatua from Pukekohe will be leading the music for the night. He is cur-rently in his third year of his PhD in Jazz at the Syd-ney University, and has been recently nominated as a finalist for Apra Best Pacific Song at the NZ

Pacific Music Awards. He plans to release his debut album by the end of 2015.

Joshua Faleatua, also from Pukekohe and part of the CRE8 Dance Crew, is a silver and gold hip-hop medallist, taking out these placings at the World Hip Hop champs in the USA for 2014 and 2015 respectively.

    Tuakau couple share Christmas joy

Christmas time is described as the season of giving, and Ian and Judy Simpson of Tuakau are a great ex-ample of what festive joy is all about. The couple, who own Discovery River Cruises, wanted to give back to the children of the Franklin community, and offered a free river cruise on their luxurious boat.

Families had to complete a nomination form, ex-plaining their situations of hardship or difficulties that they have faced throughout the year.

After receiving an overwhelming response, Ian and Judy couldnt choose just a select few. Instead they

bought all the children onboard and split the cruise into two.

We have had such great support from the commu-nity over the past year, Ian and I both wanted to be able to give something back, said Judy.

Held last Wednesday, the children and their fami-lies were welcomed aboard the luxurious Discovery 1, which was based just slightly North of the Tuakau Bridge. They were treated to delicious food, a perfor-mance from a magician, face painting and a relaxing cruise down the Waikato River.

    10 mins to Waiuku.

By Emma Sharplinll The regatta was held at the Takapuna Boat Club at the end of Novem-ber, and was the second qualifying regatta for the Rio Olympics in 2016. Sailors from all around the world attended the event. This was only the second the time the event has been held in New Zealand.

A keen sailor himself and belonging to the Waiuku Yacht Club, Tane was eager to get involved as much as he could during the week. I was able to watch my Koro sail, and got to drive the rescue boat and help people launch. It was so much fun, says Tane. Proud Koro, Alan Dawson, said he was amazed at how involved Tane was with the event. Anything he was asked to do, he gave it more than 100 percent. At the end of the week, I had people coming up to me and ask-ing if they could buy him, laughs Alan.

Tanes willingness to help didnt go un-noticed. Ralph Roberts, on behalf of the Takapuna Boating Club, felt Tane needed to be recognized for his efforts. Tane was present-ed with several T-shirts, badges and a certificate for be-ing an outstanding volunteer by Peter Montgomery, the voice of New Zealand yachting.

Koro Alan said that this isnt the first time the young sailor can be found volunteering his time. Tane is always helping out or ready to lend a hand. Its is something that you dont see much of in children these days. He is a regular at the Waiuku Golf Club as well, ready to help when needed.

    Tanes efforts recognised

    Tane Dawson was recently

    recognised for his volunteer

    efforts.

Wa i u ku s Tane Dawson isnt like most 11 year olds. While majority try their best to bunk here or there for a day off school, Tane managed to convince his teacher to allow him a whole week off to volunteer at the Finn Hold Cup 2015.

Volunteers working on New Zealands largest annual motorsport event, the ITM 500 Auckland V8 Supercars Race, have taken out the Best Volunteer Group Award for the second year in a row.

    Billie Douglas

llThe award was presented at the annual V8 Super-cars Gala Awards Dinner in Sydney on Monday, De-cember 7. It was judged by V8 Supercars race direc-tors and stewards, who rate volunteers at each of the 16 events on V8 Supercars Australias annual race cal-endar. The criteria for the award included aspects of professionalism of race control, administration and flag marshals, and speed of vehicle recovery from the track in the event of an accident. James Warburton, V8 Supercars CEO, congratulated the volunteers.

We couldnt run the ITM 500 Auckland without the hard work and cooperation of our volunteers. Their commitment, professionalism, and courteous and

Auckland V8 volunteers win againfriendly manner are a vital part of creating a world-class event for fans. More than 500 volunteers worked on the ITM 500 Auckland V8 Supercars, held at the Pukekohe Park Raceway in November.

Brett ORiley, Auckland Tourism, Events and Eco-nomic Development (ATEED) Chief Executive, cred-its taking the award for the second year running to the passion and professionalism of the volunteers.

ATEED, who invests $1 million in sponsorship an-nually to the V8 Super Cars events, accepted the award on Aucklands behalf.

Andrew Baker, Franklin Local Board Chair, says the consecutive awards reflect the sense of camaraderie and willingness to pitch in of the regions close knit community. He also attributes them to the regions commitment to motor racing. Pukekohe is New Zea-lands spiritual home of motor racing, and that is re-inforced each year when hundreds of Pukekohe and Franklin locals step up to help make the event the huge success it is. We look forward to welcoming the V8 Su-percars back in 2016.

Hard work has paid off for Trinity Grass of Puke-kohe Stamp Club. The final Stamp Club meeting for 2015 saw Trinity win the Stamp Champ trophy and re-ceive her Bronze Philatelic Award. Over the last twelve months, Trinity has been entering the one page com-petitions monthly, brought items of interest to share with others, entered the Scavenger Hunt and learned about philatelic terminology. Trinity particularly likes to collect thematically, with her main topics being an-imals, flowers, cartoons and jewellery.

ll Unless you have never been to a gym, a school, a church service or on the internet, resisting temptation is a concept you are un-likely to be familiar with. It is enforced up-on us from when we are oblivious five-year-olds, revelling in the simplicity of our short term-focused minds, and it does not stop being enforced upon us when we are adults, seemingly more mature and aware of long term consequences; yet no better off when it comes to making the decision between a burger and an apple. The truth is its a lot harder to put into action than what is portrayed. Those who beam down at you from infomercials on your TV screen, having achieved their impossible goals, may make it appear otherwise. How-ever, in the early stages of a commitment, you are likely to not feel the effects of what you are giving up or taking on. This makes your ac-tions seem worthless. Its like being trapped at the bottom of a well, and someone throwing you down a key as a means of escape.

Human willpower is an influential and mi-raculous thing; however, just like all things of such nature, it tends to be rather difficult to reach. Yes, just like the movies tell us, every-one has revolutionary willpower to be drawn upon buried deep inside their hearts. How-ever, it is also quite literally that; buried very deep inside. And unless you poke an umbrel-la down to try and hook the edge of it, (which is bound to be slightly uncomfortable), its going to take a little while to grasp. So how do you cope, in the early hours of your personal commitment, with such remote and pitiful willpower when trying to resist temp-tation? The answer, this time, really is simple. Instead of giving yourself the agonizing choice between the burger and the apple, cut out the burger altogether. Change your route so that you dont even go past the fast food outlet on your way home from work. Throw out your chip packets and biscuits and re-place them with a stock of pears and unsalted Brazil nuts. Ring the power company and tell them to cut the connection to your TV; even throw a brick through the screen if you must.If you cant just resist temptation, you must remove it.

    In two minds?

Walking the length of the country is no easy feat, but Reyne Plamer, and Frenchman, Sebastien Vanholder, are certain they can achieve this, as well as raise awareness and funds for a worthy cause.

The duo are following the Te Araroa pathway, which is New Zealands longest trail, spanning a distance of 3000km, all while fundraising for SIDS and Kids, a national charity that is based in Waiuku and that has a special place in Reynes heart.I have chosen SIDS and Kids as my charity to sup-port as they receive no government funding and I would like to raise awareness, as well as funds, to help reduce the number of infant deaths in our community. This walk is dedicated to my sister, Kali Eva Palmer, who suddenly passed away from SIDS on May 17, 1996, aged only 28 days. Even though I never knew my sister, I always think about her, and who she could have been, and the SIDS and Kids charity was a massive help to our family. After hearing about Reynes adventure, Sebastien contacted him to see if he could join the cause. This is my first time in New Zealand, and I am re-ally looking forward to completing this walk.SIDS and Kids, which was established by Waiukus Margaret Free after losing a grandchild to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood and supporting be-reaved families.Margaret was blown away that Reyne chose their charity to support. I am incredibly proud of the fact that Reyne is com-pleting this walk for us, as well as for the memory of his sister. Any support is greatly appreciated and we are really looking forward to watching their prog-ress.After a breakfast fit for kings at Margarets house last Thursday, Reyne and Sebastien left for their journey north, to start the trail which begins in Cape Reinga

Babies sleeping safely in PukekoheBillie [email protected]

ll Pukekohe has contributed to a series of national events promoting safe sleep practises for babies, as part of the 2015 annual Whakawhetu Safe Sleep Day.

The Whakawhetu National SUDI pre-vention for Maori is a Kaupapa Maori programme, dedicated to reducing the rate of Sudden Unexpected Death in In-fancy.

Safe Sleep Day is aimed to promote safe sleeping practises as one of the most important strategies to prevent the above from occurring. It sought to educate mothers on methods to enable

their babies to sleep safely, such as posi-tioning babies on their backs and in their own baby beds. The national campaign, which ultimately aimed to ensure that every sleep is a safe sleep for every baby, was embodied in Pukekohe on Friday, December 4, through a variety of events and displays.

The morning saw the foyer of the Franklin Arts Centre hosting a display of Wahakura, traditional woven flax sleep-ing baskets for babies.

The Wahakura was being promoted as a key solution for preventing suffocation in bed, ensuring that baby and parent can share a bed in a safe manner. Weav-ers also demonstrated the art of making

a Wahakura on the day. The event continued in Puke-kohe in the afternoon, at the Nga Hall E Wha O Puke-kohe Marae, with several Christmas celebrations. Food stalls, health promotions and entertainment were able to be enjoyed by the public.

Trucking for a causeWhen local business Pukekohe Hiab Transport responded to a call for help late last year, they didnt realise they were going to become Harolds helpers.

llOwners Craig and Janine Morris cheer-fully agreed to be the pro-bono transport company for the local Life Education mobile classroom and move the

classroom from school to school. This year they have moved the mobile classroom to over 16 lo-cal schools and over 5000 local children have ben-efitted from the lessons taught.

Local Educator Sally Miles loves dealing with Pukekohe Hiab Trans-port.

The team at PHT de-serve big thumbs up, says Sally.

They are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. Frank-

lin is a very large geo-graphical area and PHT have happily done all my moves from Pokeno to Awhitu.

The mobile classroom is a unique multi-sensory environment that engag-es children being taught.

The classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with sight, sound and aroma tech-nologies and three-di-mensional film technol-ogy that make learning in the mobile classrooms, a fascinating experience.

Post Pet of the monthPlayful and people loving cat,

Maggie, was an unexpected Christmas present, turning up in our garden as a neglected,

starving kitten late December of 2009. She was named

Magpie or Maggie for short, because she entered our family

through the bars of a Magpie trap. Maggies adventures have

taken her to many faraway lands, most notably the dish-

washer and the freezer. These days her hobbies are eating,

    sleeping and eating more.

Have a Meowy Christmas & purrfect holidays

Christmas is no doubt an exciting time for every member of the family. Up goes your freshly cut pride and joy: a tree placed at precisely the right angle so that guests can admire your decorative skills on entering your home.

By Billie Douglas - [email protected]

Pets love Christmas trees as much as we do. Un-fortunately, they tend to view your aesthetic creation more as something for immediate mass destruction.

And no wonder. With the enticing sparkle of the lights, the hypnotic swinging of the baubles, the ago-nising rustle-rustle of the tinsel against the branch-es; its like a pets version of a giant carnival.

There are, thankfully, a number of things you can do to pet proof your tree this Christmas:

    1. Place the tree near somewhere you can anchor it (a wall for example) and se-cure it with a fishing line and an eyebolt.

    2. Wrap decorations tightly around the tree to make them seem less enticing; no dangling tinsel ends or cords.

    3. Put a bitter anti-chew cream on the ends of branches, tinsel and tree light wires. 4. If all else fails, simply give your pet something better to do. Dont neglect them

for want of frantically wrapping presents or stuffing a turkey; make sure you play with them for at least 15 minutes a day.

Pets need your support at this difficult time. Its your job to help them defeat their personal struggle with resisting the temptation of the big colourful tree.

    Pet-proofing your Christmas tree

Purrfect Appeal Update:The Post and Zoe Thomson of Waiuku Cat Colony Rescue have been blown away by the support of an anonymous donor, who has given an incredible amount of cat food to the volunteer group. Please keep those donations of kitty related items coming, as every little bit counts.

Panuku to provide development for PukekohePukekohe will experience significant long-term improvements, along with 18 other locations across Auckland city, which have been identified by Aucklands new urban regeneration agency.

Billie DouglasllThe Auckland Development Com-mittee, on Tuesday,December 8, ap-proved the list of urban locations from Whangaparoa in the north to Pukekohe in the south that were recommended by agency Panuku Development Auckland.

The agency, which aims to develop metropolitan areas through urban re-generation, is the newest Auckland Council-controlled organisation. It was formed through the merging of Water-front Auckland and Auckland Council Properties Ltd on September 1.

Panuku will take a long term view of suburbs and town centres to ensure what is built today stands the test of time.

Pukekohe has been identified as one of two satellite towns in the Auckland Plan and a town centre under the pro-posed Auckland Unitary Plan (PAUP). This provides for greater intensification

in the town centre. The Pukekohe popu-lation is predicted to double to 50,000 people over the next 30 years, making urban development vital for the town.

Panuku owns a number of sites in Pukekohe, on behalf of Auckland Coun-cil and Auckland Transport, including the large site at 82 Manukau Rd next to the rail line. It will work with the council family, Kiwi Rail and the private sector to determine how these sites should be developed.

The growth and development of Pukekohe must also accommodate the communitys key values and concerns. Extensive community consultation has taken place through the drafting of the Franklin Local Board Plan and the Puke-kohe Area Plan.

    fire safety

    tipNovember

As El Nino conditions promise a windier, drier summer, Auckland Council has declared a restricted fire season for Auckland mainland from 1 December 2015. The restriction will see mandatory permits required for all outdoor fires in the rural areas of the mainland of Auckland for all fires in the open air including those used for cooking and heating. To assist residents, new fire season signs have been placed in Waiuku to display the fire season status in that area.Council-issued fire permits are available free of charge and residents can seek free and professional fire management advice and information by calling Auckland Council on 09 301 0101 or visiting www.aucklandcouncil/ruralfire.govt.nz or the Auckland Rural Fires newly launched Facebook page. Always do a safety check and talk to your neighbours before you light any type of outdoor fire. If you cantcontrol it, dont light it.

Residents should report suspicious fires immediately by calling the fire service on 111.

Aka Aka students get amongst the environmentAka Aka School students were treated to a visit to Kim Jobson and Stu Muirs farm last Tuesday.

    Emma [email protected]

ll Students were last there five years ago, when the Muirs had only just be-gun planting their wetland restoration project.

Stu and Kim have spent every spare minute in the last five years restoring several hundred hectares of estuarine swamp near the mouth of the mighty Waikato River to its pristine state.

It was great for the older students to see how much the wetland plants had grown, and to see how we had developed so much more land, said Stu Muir.

Students were given hands on expe-

rience when it came to their environ-mental studies. They were able to see how the Muirs eradicate pests, such as ferrets, stoats and koi carp, and students were also shown whitebait and their life-cycles, and the importance the wetlands have on helping keep them sustainable for the future.

They were also able to catch and re-lease several eels that had been netted in the Muirs water ways. The aim of the visit was to reintroduce the vision of Aka Aka School students working with the Muirs wetland project.

We really hope to be able to come out more often in the new year, and in-clude the visits into our environmental studies. The students absolutely loved their time there, and we are so thankful for the Muirs allowing us to come out, said Principal, Whaea Michaelene.

The Muirs farm was recently featured on Country Calendar, with the episode called Water and Milk, explaining how the couple have combined restoration of the wetland with everyday life on the dairy farm.

Jayden and Cameron Grey and Sandy Muir begin pulling in the net to see how many koi carp they have caught.

Aden Brown was surprised that the koi carp was nearly at big as him.

    Steve [email protected]

ll At the Pukekohe meeting held to discuss the Custom St and Manukau Road Intersection, Auck-land Transport revealed that they would recom-mend traffic lights as their preferred option. This proved to be very unpopular with a number of people attending voicing a very strong opinion against it. Andy Baker, Chair of the Local Board welcomed the idea if it would bring greater safety for pedes-trians and would be within budget allowed. Ian McDougall was extremly vocal against the idea cit-ing that AT had no vision and that it was critical to rethink the whole plan.Katie Hackett, Franklin Youth Advisory Board member welcomed the idea.

There were some good robust discus-sions with different points of view on the options put forward. There was support for the option to put traffic signals on the inter-section from some parts of the communi-ty who welcomed the benefits of a punctu-al and regular bus service connecting with train and much needed safety improve-ments for pedestrians. Others questioned the focus on public transport, they felt that a roundabout would be better to improve traffic flow and enable pedestrians to cross Manukau Road.

Auckland Transport took on board the feedback and is currently assessing the way forward before deciding on a final solution.

What do you think? We welcome your thoughts and feedback on the issues.

The presentation by Auckland Transport should have all citizens con-cerned; it was a short term patch up to a long term problem.

The brief given to them appeared to be just get the buses in and out of the transport hub and not to worry about any costs to others using the roads. No repercussion for any other intersec-tions was taken into account, it was a presentation only on one intersection, Custom, Harris, Manukau,

The transport Hub is an important part of making it better for all commut-ers, bus road or rail, but we do need and want a plan which has vision and fore-sight. Its time for our Local Board to lead the way.
