They're friends, the two of them - Mika Immonen and Zion Zvi - and as it turned out, they faced each other twice in the Open/Pro event of the Predator Tour stop on the weekend of March 3-4. The Iceman won both times, once early, and again in the finals to finish undefeated. The $500-added event drew 11 entrants to Mr. Cue in Lindenhurst, NY.

As Zvi idled with a bye in the opening round, Immonen defeated Greg McAndrews 7-3. They met in the second round, and Immonen won his first of their two 7-3. Immonen moved among the winners' side final four to face tour director Tony Robles. In the second pairing, Frankie Hernandez squared off against Jennifer Barretta.

Immonen sent Robles to the loss side 7-2, as Hernandez downed Barretta 7-5. Immonen got into the hot seat with a 7-4 victory over Hernandez and waited for his friend Zvi to complete a four-match, loss-side winning streak to meet up with him in the finals.

Zvi drew a bye on the loss side and then shut out Brian Russell, to pick up Barretta. Robles drew McAndrews, who after being sent west by Immonen, defeated Steve Wright 7-3 and Scott Murphy 7-4. Zvi finished Barretta's day with a 7-4 victory and was joined in the quarterfinals by McAndrews, who downed Robles 7-3.

Zvi and McAndrews locked up in a double hill battle in those quarterfinals, but Zvi

prevailed and advanced to meet Hernandez in the semifinals. A 7-4 win there gave Zvi the chance he'd been working for all along - a second chance against the Iceman. Immonen took their second set in the potentially extended race 9-4 to complete his undefeated day.

Tour director Tony Robles thanked the owners and staff of Mr. Cue, as well as sponsors Predator Cues, The National Amateur Pool League, Delta-13 racks, Poison Cues, PoolOnTheNet.com, and NYCGrind. 1st $600 Mika Immonen2nd $400 Zion Zvi3rd $200 Frankie Hernandez

This past weekend the Lone Star Event hosted its second 9-ball stop of the year at Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas with 73 Amateur players and 52 Open players in attendance. Participants came from all over including Tyler, Temple, San Antonio, and Austin to take the Lone Star plunge. Open side notables included Joey Barnes, James Baraks, Manny Chau, and Sylver Ochoa. Amateurs included Calvin Trimont, Robert Hitchcock, Rocky Esquivel, Robert Odom, Steve Espinosa and many more.

Match play commenced at approximately 3pm on Saturday after 125 players were auctioned off. The Amateur division winners’ side final 8 saw Jason Pearce defeat Steve Lindgren 7-1, Raul Escobedo oust Calvin Trimont 7-4, Victor Rojas best Sonny Bosshamer 7-1, and Karl McClendon defeat Rocky Esquivel 7-2. On the one-loss side it was Bobby Perez making a great comeback with 6 straight wins after a second round loss to Steve Lindgren. His end came at the hands of Will Felder 5-3. It was Mikey Frost over Charlie Buckner 5-3 and David Massie over Eric Olivo which moved them into 9th -12th position on the one-loss side along with Felder and Perez. It was Felder and Rojas who

dueled for 3rd after Rojas was dealt a blow by MCclendon 7-5 on the winners’ side. Pearce sent Escobedo west 7-4 and earned himself a first-time hot seat match up with McClendon. Pearce secured his place 7-3 while Rojas defeated Felder 5-3. McClendon overcame Rojas but fell to Pearce in the final.

The Open division winners’ side final 8 saw Andy Jethwa skim by Manny Chau 9-8, Raul Escobedo best Bill Fuller 9-3, Sylver Ochoa defeat Brent Thomas, and James Baraks glide by Brian Rosenbaum. On the west side, Danny Lee defeated Thomas, Joey Barnes bested Brian Rosenbaum, Chau sent home McClendon, and Mike Alonzo eliminated Fuller. Upsets included Barnes and Chau who suffered winners’ side blows from Jethwa by the same score of 9-8, but when the smoke cleared it was Ochoa over Escobedo for the hot seat 9-6. On the one-loss side, Barnes and Escobedo were stopped short by Chau 7-4, 7-2, respectively. Ochoa made quick work of Chau and finished the event undefeated by a final score of 9-2.

Other winners included Courtney Peters and Loretta Lindgren who split the $100 Top Lady prize awarded in the Amateur

division. Nick Calderaro, Houston’s hottest young up-and-comer took home first for his efforts in the Junior division held on Sunday. Rocky Esquivel, Steve Espinosa, and Brittany McCombs all took home a Poison Cue from the Poison Cue Raffles. Congratulations!

By AzB Staff Home field advantage proved to be helpful at the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour's 3rd Annual New England Pool & Billiards Hall Of Fame Ray Desell Memorial 9-Ball Open held on March 3rd and 4th at Snooker's Billiards in Providence, RI as housepro Mike Dechaine held off a late charge to win the event.

Dechaine made his way through the field of 71 players and it looked like it would be another easy tournament for "The Fireball" when he defeated Hunter Lombardo 9-3 for the hot-seat.

Hunter then fell to Nelson Oliveira on the one loss side 9-5. Oliveira had lost a match to Jeremy Sossei on Saturday and had battled his way to the finals via the long route.

The first set of the double elimination finals was a close one and the players found themselves tied at 7-7 when Dechaine got the chance he was waiting for. An Oliveira scratch on the break let Dechaine to the table with the chance to get to the hill first, but Dechaine was unable to take advantage and clear the rack. Oliveira ended up winning that game and the next to win the first set 9-7.

Dechaine came out strong in the second set and lead 3-0 and 4-1, but Oliveira came back and again tied the match at 7-7. This time, the tables were turned, and it was Dechaine winning the final two games for the 9-7 win and first place in the tournament.

The second chance tournament on Sunday drew 25 players and Rich Britt defeated Stacie Bourbeau for the hot-seat and again in the finals to earn first place.

The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be back in action at Trick Shot Billiards in Clifton Park, NY in two weeks (March 17-18) for their next event.

Zuglan is now taking entries for the season finale at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY on August 23 - 26. These always fill up and players are turned away. Congrats to Larry Giles, Richard Murray, Mike Delawder and Kevin Paquette for finishing 13th-16th place they received paid entry into Sundays event also Cassidy Mulligan received $50 for top female finisher.

Ft. Pierce, FL (Feb. 26. 2012) – Fresh faces, forgotten friends and returning veteran players all were back at Ultimate Billiards in Fort Pierce, Florida, Saturday to kick off the Flamingo Billiards Tour 2012 9-Ball season. The day was a combination of fun and great competition for the players and spectators. Twenty-three women from around the state were back to play but only one could finish at the top - one of the FBT’s top 9-Ball players and usual suspect, Jeannie Seaver.

Seaver, the 2011 FBT Tour Champion, played strong last year but finished third at the End of Year tournament in November. But she was back in the saddle on Saturday, starting the day out with a win over Christina Terlizzi, who won her spot at the event by winning the FBT Mini-Tournament last year. Seaver continued her route to the final four redraw with back-to-back wins over recently married Nicolle Rasmussen Cuellar, who’s back playing after an extended honeymoon away from the FBT, and Vanessa Seaver, Jeanie’s sister, who managed to play all day despite an aching back.

Seaver was joined in the final four by Crystal McCormick, who’s back competing after being absent from the Tour for the past few years due to the birth of her son. But McCormick clearly hasn’t been backing away from her game, placing third at the US Amateur Nationals in Tampa last November. Crystal brought that same stroke to Fort Pierce Saturday sending back west Shanelle Loraine (who’s back home after making international appearances back east in Asia), former FBT winner, room owner and BAAT Tour director Stephanie Mitchell, who’s back in the hunt this year, and Susan Roberts, who’s working hard to get her game back in shape, and is well on her way judging by the way she played.

Cassidy Mulligan and Stephanie Mitchell made their way back to the final four redraw from the one-loss side. Cassidy, who lost her first match to Janis Sessions, fought her way back by knocking out Alicia DeAbrue, Christie Cloke, Nicolle Cuellar, FBT Tour Director Mimi McAndrews and Susan Roberts. Stephanie got back on track to the redraw as well, ending the day for Kelly Cavanaugh, Kelly Coyle and Vanessa Seaver.

The semi-finals were reminiscent of matches earlier in the day. Mitchell was back playing McCormick, who sent Mitchell west earlier in the day. Mitchell, not one to back down, gave McCormick a tough start, but

McCormick pulled ahead in the end, 7-4. Mulligan drew friend and foe Seaver, but Seaver proved to be too tough on this night, with Mulligan taking a back seat, 7-2.

In the finals, McCormick and Seaver both played strong late into the night with the score going back and forth, each missing a shot at the wrong time letting the other player back at the table, and each refusing to back off their game. However, at 5-5, and Seaver’s back against the wall, she finally pulled ahead and took the next two games and the tournament. Some of the matches can be viewed at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/flamingo-billiards-tour.

Mary Pendletown Brown, who hasn’t been seen in years, was back in town to play, as was Jane Freeman, who played once a year ago and hadn’t been back. Alicia DeAbreu, Kim Ritcheson and Debbie Barkley were all back and ready to play. And to newcomers Erin Bradley and Sherry Sandeler, we hope you come back!

Many thanks again to room owners Bill Mallen and Gary Gilsanan (www.ultimate-billiards.com), for inviting the FBT back and for being great hosts and supporting the Flamingo Billiards Tour, and to Boynton Billiards for their continued support.

The next event is a WPBA-Qualifier at Cue-Phoria in Orlando, April 28, 2012. For more information, visit http://www.flamingobilliardstour.com/.

My-Hanh Lac Takes Tour Opener TWO YEARS STRAIGHT

MY-HANH LAC TAKES OPENER TWO YEARS STRAIGHT

BY: KIA SIDBURYJ. Pechauer Northeast Women's Tour's 2012 opening event was held at Triple Nines Bar & Billiards in Elkridge, MD on the weekend of February 25th. This event featured a strong field of twenty-four players with $500 added to the winning pot. Yet another season opening was met with a win by a fired-up My-Hanh Lac. My-Hanh had a strong run through the winner's bracket of this event, defeating Pauline Mattes, and Ji-Hyun Park. Lac had a close call in her match against Linda Shea in a hill-hill battle. My-Hanh pulled through to defeat Shea and Susan Shinn to follow before heading to the one-loss side after falling to Briana Miller. Meanwhile, from the bottom half of the bracket, Brianna Miller defeated Borana Andoni, Kathy Friend, Nicole Vincent (hill-hill match), and Charlynn Dzam. Her victory of My-Hanh Lac put Miller in the hot seat. However, Lac was determined to redeem herself and defeated Kathy Friend for a rematch against Briana. The fight was worth it for My-Hanh as she took first place win over Miller.

Congratulations My-Hanh and the other top finishers for great performances at this event: A couple of notable mentions are the efforts of Charlynn Dzam and Susan Shinn. Both of these players made it to the money rounds from the winner’s bracket for the first time in this tour. Keep up the good work ladies. The JPNEWT would like to thank all the players for participating in the event. A special continued thanks to Triple Nines for hosting this event and J.Pechauer Custom Cues for supporting the tour.

ARCHER DOMINATES

BY SKIP MALONEY - AZB STAFF

At the end of four rounds of play at the Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour stop on the weekend of February 25-26, Johnny Archer had yet to give up a single rack. He gave up 11 over the next 27 games - four in the battle for the hot seat and seven in the finals - to capture the $1,000-added event that had drawn 34 entrants to a new (and future) venue for the tour, Danny’s Billiards in Baxley, GA.

Tour director Tommy Kennedy sat this one out, which might otherwise have led to a re-match against Archer. The week prior, Archer had defeated Kennedy in the finals of the Andy Grubs Memorial Event at Starcade Billiards in Fort Walton Beach, FL.

With 34 players filling out a 64-player bracket, most of the first round action entailed ‘byes.’ Archer opened play with shutouts over Mike Matsie, Tom Godwin and J.R. Rossman, which moved him among the winners’ side final four to face Bret Hawes. Rod Rentz, in the meantime, faced Chad Royal. Archer chalked up his fourth straight shutout, over Hawes, to move into the hot seat match versus Rentz, who’d sent Royal west 7-3. Archer gave up his first four racks in a 7-4 win over Rentz, which left him in the hot seat, awaiting John Swope, who would win seven straight on the loss side to meet him in the finals.

On the loss side, with two victories behind him, Swope defeated Gregg Sheffield and Billy Ray, both 7-3, to pick up Hawes. Royal drew Jay Wideman (singled out by Kennedy for what was described as an “outstanding performance”), who won a double hill match over Mark Taber to move into the money rounds, and then won a second double hill battle against J.R. Rossman to meet Royal.

Royal ended Wideman’s bid 7-5 and moved into the quarterfinals versus Swope, who’d downed Hawes 7-4. Swope then defeated

Royal by the same 7-4 score and downed Rentz 7-5 in the semifinals.

If Hallmark hasn’t created a sympathy card for a pool player who’s won seven matches on the loss side and then has to face “The Scorpion,” Johnny Archer, in the finals of an event, they should. Swope put up a fight in the extended, race-to-9 finals, but Archer prevailed 9-7 to capture the title.

Prizes were awarded to the top junior, lady and senior player on the tour stop. Mikey Watson picked up the $25 prize for top junior, Lindsay Hunkele took home $25 as the top female, and P.C. Oliver, who finished just out of the money, won $50 as the top-finishing senior.

Tour Director Tommy Kennedy thanked Danny Stell and his staff at Danny’s Billiards for their hospitality, as well as sponsors Tiger Products, Mueller Sporting Goods, David Adams, Simonis Cloth, Cliff Manning of Manning Custom Cues, Andy Gilbert Custom Cues, and Robert Harris Custom Cues.

His tournament trail of 7 wins and 1 loss, included wins over Raphael DaBreo 8 - 3; Jim Parisi 7 - 5 ; Keith Adamik 7 - 4; Bryan Jeziorski 7 - 5; and Wesley Kennedy 7 - 5 before suffering a loss to Alex Osipov 7 - 5. Tony Ignomirello, who lost in the third round, won six straight matches to face Arturo for a shot in the Finals. It was not to be Tony’s day as Arturo won the match 7 - 5, with Tony finishing a solid third place. As the match between Arturo and Tony progressed, Alex poised in the Hot Seat received an urgent call. Due to an undisclosed emergency Alex had to leave, so the finals were settled with one sudden death game and Arturo claiming the prize. The next Tri-State event is a $500 Added A/D at Castle Billiards in East Rutherford, NJ on Saturday, March 3, 2012. Please provide a thank you to Sterling-Gaming, Ozone Billiards, Ron Tarr Cues, Kamui Tips, Phil Capelle, BlueBook Publishing, Human Kinetics for their sponsorship leading to this event.

Though he finished undefeated, at around 4 a.m. on a Sunday morning, Quin Y Chen’s journey to the winner’s circle of the Tri-State Tour stop on March 3, was not without its challenges; specifically, Emily Duddy, who met him, first, in the hot seat, and chalked up as many racks in the double hill battle against him as three of Chen’s four previous opponents combined. She’d return to challenge him again in the finals, and again, he prevailed to capture the event title. The $500-added, A-D handicapped event drew 55 entrants to Castle Billiards in East Rutherford, NJ.

After an opening round bye, Chen (racing to 6) faced four opponents to get into the hot seat match against Duddy, and didn’t give up more than three racks against any of them. He gave up two each to Eddie Perez and Cory Sohlman, before Michael Rodriguez managed three against him. He gave up two more among the winners’ side final four versus William Zarzour and moved into the hot seat match. Duddy, by contrast, (racing to 7, and in one case, 8) opened strong with a 7-1 victory over Chris Peralta, but got locked up in a second round, double hill fight against Bogie Uzdejcyzk. She survived that battle and then downed two Tri-State regulars, Ed Culhane (7-4) and Scott Simonetti (8-4), to join Chen among the winners’ side final four. She survived a second double hill fight against Steve Way 7-6 to face Chen in the battle for the hot seat. They faced each other for the first time, with an aggregate score total of 24-9 (Chen, 72%) to 36-21 (Duddy, 63%).

Chen took an early lead in the hot seat battle, but Duddy fought back to knot things at double hill. A fateful decision on a 6-ball in the final game (difficult bank, or safe; she chose safe), left Chen with a difficult shot. A kick-bank dropped the 6-ball, and he ran out from there to claim the hot seat.

On the loss-side, Michael Rodriguez was in the midst of a four-game winning streak that would propel him into the semifinals versus Duddy. He got by George Osipovitch and Eddie DaCosta, both double hill, to draw Zarzour, coming over from the winners’ side final four. Steve Way drew Joe Palone, who’d defeated Culhane 7-3 and Simonetti 8-6. Rodriguez downed Zarzour 6-4, as Palone was eliminating Way 7-5. Rodriguez got his shot against Duddy with a 7-5 victory over Palone in the quarterfinals.

Rodriguez got off to a quick start in the semifinals against Duddy, advancing to the hill at six games, before Duddy mounted a comeback that eventually tied the match and then, won it. It was already 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, but Chen and Duddy opted to tough it out and play the final match. Chen won it 7-4 to take top honors.

Tour representatives thanked the ownership and staff at Castle Billiards, as well as sponsors Sterling-Gaming, Ozone Billiards, Ron Tarr Cues, Kamui Tips, Phil Capelle, BlueBook Publishing, and Human Kinetics.
