You may remember the three simple words, as told by Mort, that escaped from Tom
Courtney’s lips over and over at the 1956 Olympics… “I Wanna Win! I Wanna Win!”
Well, we used to have an actual medal with full red, white and blue ribbon to
commemorate those who finished strong in the bookfield at awards banquets.

THIS WEEK IN SW RECRUITING HISTORY
“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” --Winston Churchill
“The most vital quality a soldier can possess is self-confidence.” --Gen. George Patton
“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” --Henry Ford
“There are no pains without gains.” --Ben Franklin
“We are here on earth to do good for others. What the others are here for, I don’t know.” --W. H. Auden
April 28, 2011 – Sales School starts next week. How’s that for history?
Dear Mr. M: Do you think I will hit my recruiting goals?
Mr. M: Eh, probably not.
Dear Mr. M: What’s the best use of my time to finish strong in building my team?
Mr. M: Glad you asked… I find my time best spent on Facebook. I also think it’s a good idea to reflect on the virtues of being average. It’s a lot of pressure to recruit until the last minute. Besides that, you have to figure out what to pack for Sales School and which shorts make you look most like a professional educational consultant. Too much work if you ask me.

Name: Adrian SolisUniversity attend/Major: International Business and SpanishHow many summers have you sold? 3 going into my 4thOrganization? DYNASTYHow many people have you recruited for your team this year? 15 recruits at one point in time, now I have 8 with it.What is your biggest personal accomplishment outside of SW? Starting my own business and being able to own real estate while in college. Who is the biggest inspiration to you and why? My biggest inspirations are my parents because they have given and sacrificed so much. I was born in Mexico and seeing how much work my parents had to put into making it in this country is amazing. They are my biggest inspirations and without them, I wouldn’t be the man I am today. What is your biggest personal accomplishment with SW? My biggest accomplishment up to this point has to be the fact that I managed to pay all of my school expenses through Southwestern without my parents help and being financially independent from them.
What has recruiting a team taught you so far? Wow, recruiting has taught me so much but patience and emotional empathy for others are on top of my list. I’m not a very emotional person so dealing with kids that are emotional and helping them through that has being at times awkward and frustrating but worth it. Dealing with kids that are so different from one another and adapting the ways I train each one and helping them overcome their fears and concerns has been a learning process. Recruiting has helped me develop patience for sure and an emotional level of maturity, which is great. What is your motivation for building a team? I want to learn to lead and be effective at it. I’m good at leading by example but this has helped me lead from the front of the room. What’s the hardest part of recruiting and how do you overcome it? The hardest part is having kids go cold. The only way I know how to deal with that is pushing through. I can’t control kids but I can control how I let them affect me, so I don’t let it. Mentally prepare for it before hand and asking myself if I did the best I could. What’s your favorite part of recruiting? The students that I get to help and have had the opportunity to invest in over the past 7 months have been great. I get to help young man and women achieve their goals and form new friends in the process.Favorite song from last summer? Katy Perry and Eminem - It’s all a blurWhat do you do when you are not building a team? I play basketball, check on my real estate/ tenants, and hang out with family and girlfriend. Any other words of advice? Everyone should recruit at least for a year and sell books as long as you can because there is no other program that molds you and helps you more in life than this.

5 Reasons to Finish Strong in Recruiting#1 It feels good! If you’ve been to the Sunday Student Manager Welcome Meeting, you know we begin with RECOGNITION! We say, “Everyone who brought at least one to Nashville, stand up!” It ends with the top recruiters coming to stage. It absolutely feels good to do your best and hit your team building goals.
#2 It’s a great habit to acquire. Everyone is 100% disciplined to their habits. All habits, good or bad, feel natural. Same habits, same results. Different habits, different results. Finishing strongly is a great habit to acquire.
#3 A strong finish will give you confidence heading into Sales School. Confidence is something you want as the summer begins. Confidence is one key to victory: if you feel good, you perform well. Confidence is king.
#4 The people you recruit now, STICK! The closer Sales School gets, the better the show percentage. Even though recruiting
gets old, and your info session is maybe slightly stale, all the energy you can put toward team building pays off from this point forward. Students are running out of summer options and the ones you select, stay!
#5 Remember, there are still great people out there. There are future sales managers, top OLs, and great salespeople waiting for you to approach them! Keep talking to people—keep asking your current team members to build the team! There are 11th hour stories all over the place (see last issue)! Some of our best SW stars were recruited in the last couple weeks. Stay the course!

Name: Betsy RowlandTitle: Marketing Support CoordinatorHow long with SW? 31 yearsWhat are the different areas of the company you have worked in over the years? Sales Support for 27 years. I have worked with SW dealers from 35 states, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom. I have been in Southwestern Marketing for 4 years. What are you in charge of currently? A big part of my job is Sales School. I work with the hotels for sleeping rooms and additional training space. I book the venues outside of SW where Sales School is held and find meeting rooms for the Student Manager Meetings. I order the sales case and the supplies that go into the sales kit. In the summer I handle the Pacesetter and in the fall I work with Sales Support to produce the awards for banquets. I also work to produce the Superstar Book each winter in time for GRS. I take care of donations for SW, help Dan Moore from time-to-time and just recently started helping Ralph Brigham. Favorite part of job? Working behind the scenes and taking big projects, working and seeing them through to the end that will benefit the SW dealers.Least favorite part? 1+ hour commute (one way) each day. I’m not a fan of fighting traffic and could use that time for something more enjoyable!!What is one thing that makes you smile each day you get up to come to work? We have two dachshunds and typically they peek at me out of one eye every morning and I know they are thinking “Ha-ha, I get to keep sleeping!” Two seconds later they are back asleep and it makes me laugh! What’s the biggest change that you have seen with SW? When I first started, we used electric typewriters and used carbon paper to make copies of our work. The day that each person in Sales Support got their own desktop computer was the greatest thing ever. Technology has definitely made the job much easier and productive.Something no one else knows about you? I have never seen any of the Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Harry Potter movies. Hobbies? Reading, reading more and more reading! I also like to find good deals on E-Bay.What’s it like to have your daughter follow in your footsteps? I’m excited that she has the opportunity to work in Sales Support with a great group of managers because she will learn more about the job and be exposed to so many different situations that will help her throughout her lifetime. Southwestern is a good fit for her and I’m proud to watch her grow!

5 Essential MeetingsTo have with your team before the summer
By Travis Lopes1. Student Manager Creed (immediately after you get the PSL)I preface the conversation with a story about a girl and you start as friends but then it gets more complicated and then you have to have the talk like "what are we?" I say "this is the 'what are we' talk for us. Are we friends, are you my boss, what are we?" I make copies of the basics of the creed page with a line to sign for the FY and the SM next to each list. We go through the list and then sign so we each walk away with a signed copy.
I always add "remember, the purpose of this relationship is to help you have a kick butt summer and get a big check at the end of it. So everything I do between now and the end of the summer is toward that end. I'm not your friend, although we will become friends through the process, that’s not my first priority. I'm not your boss, you work for yourself. I am your coach, what we call a student manager. Let’s go through this and talk about what that looks like.”
Count on from me:
Always be honestPaint a picture about if the person went to
a doctor and said that his stomach ached and he felt nauseous then the doctor would prescribe Tums. But what if the whole time he was talking to the doctor what he really had was a headache? Would the doctor be able to prescribe correctly and actually help?
Lead by exampleEmphasize 140 year old program, no need to reinvent the wheel.
Always believe in youSounds cheesy right? Sitting here in spring in Ann Arbor… But there will be times when you don’t even believe in yourself this summer, and I promise you I will always believe in you.
Counting on from you:
HonestIn 5 years as a manager I have never been mad, angry or yelled at someone I recruited. I’ve also never been disappointed in anyone as long as they were honest with me. But this is the foundation to a good summer, us being honest with each other.
CoachablePaint a picture about how you might say to them, the key is to at 3 pm, get out of their car, hop on their left leg counter clockwise all the way around the car while yelling “I love my job!” at the top of their lungs. Well, you might not tell them something that ridiculous, but you will ask them to do things that don’t make sense. Just do them anyway.
CommittedAsk “are you committed to the summer?” This is a great opportunity to see where their commitment level is at.
1111
2. Goal Setting (Immediately following the SM Creed)Setting goals and covering the ”I don’t like this” objection
Ask how much money they want to save. Ask them why that number? Why not more, why not less? Tell them to break down the amount of money they want to earn and how they will spend it to the penny, why they need the money. “I’ll go grab some water but write down everything you want to get.”
Rank them from 1-10 in importance. “If there was only one thing on the list, which would you want?” Once ranked ask them “why is it #1?” The point is to find out what is motivating for them. Ask them “if they didn’t make enough money then what would they do? How would they pay for that?” Find out what they REALLY are motivated by.
Next, ask about non-monetary goals. Same process, write down everything non-money related they want to get from the summer. Have them rank them 1-10. Then ask them why they ranked where they did. Again, this is helpful to get them thinking about what they want and also so you can motivate them. Same type of questions “why is it important to you to learn how to face rejection? If you didn’t learn it here how would you learn it?”
The final thing to talk to them about is why all the managers come back and do this multiple summers. I ask them “why do you think I am coming back this summer? Because it kind of sucks. Getting rejected a ton, working all these hours, dealing with all these problems, why would someone come back and do this again?”
Paint a picture. “What if you came up to me after the summer and said Travis, I have two tickets to the Michigan-OSU football game in the big house. We’ll pre-game at a frat, go watch the game, and then hit up the after-parties with my friends. What do you say?” Do you think that I would ever say something like this: “Well, I’d sure like to but instead I’m going to grab my book bag and go work the neighborhood across from the stadium, sell some books, and give all my money away to charity at the end of the day? I’ll skip the game and the parties just because I derive so much pleasure from the simple act of putting good books into the hands of families. Do you think I would ever say that?”
“Of course I wouldn’t. Because, and I want you to write this down, I’m not selling books this summer to sell books, I’m selling books this summer to …”
Explain how NO ONE likes selling books but they do because of what they get from the process. It’s so worth it, but they have to have a purpose for what they are doing. Explain your purposes to them and then have them come up with at least 15 themselves.
3. Schedule is YOUR Lifeline! The number one commandment is: The schedule is your lifeline
-What is a lifeline? A lifeline is a scuba diver 100m below the ocean receiving O2 through a tube. Would you cut the tube?
Schedule has 3 parts.
1212
Part 1 Hours: Success in our program can’t happen unless you put in the hours, period. It’s like two fishermen who each has their hook baited and in the water every day by 8 am. They fish all day until 5 pm when one goes home and the other stays out until 9 pm every night. The second fisherman works that extra four hours each day. There are two reasons why the second fisherman always wins. #1. Time (extra 50% each day gives him the nod in the law of averages) #2. Developed skill (while on the water that extra time each day he learns more about the intricate art of fishing, i.e. Hot spots, depth, bait adjustments, etc).
Key Definitions you MUST understand: Work = either with Mrs. Jones or on my way to see her.Prospect = someone with kids that is willing and able to buy in 20 minutes or less.
Part 2Work does NOT equal: - Filling up my car with gas.- Getting groceries.- Walking around ringing doorbells.- Going to the Post office.- Wasting time talking to old people or non-prospects.- Going to the Bank.I DON’T USE MY CELL PHONE DURING THE DAY.WHEN I GO TO WORK, I GO TO WORK.
Part 3 Work Equals: Tell them about mapping, knocking, approaching, hearing yes or no, asking for pre-approach, and moving on. Repeat. The schedule is your lifeline!!4. First 3 Weeks
Chart three different first year dealers. The first dealer doesn’t do well at all, second dealer average, third dealer top first year and a great summer. Put the three graphs one on top of the other on a single sheet of paper. An “L” graph with units on left, weeks on bottom.
First three weeks would be about the same. fourth week there is a big jump for the high guy, a small jump for the average guy and no jump for the low guy. The point is that there is no way to predict the size of someone’s check based on the first three weeks. The second commandment is: how many units you sell or don’t sell in the first three weeks is immaterial to the size of your check at the end of the summer.
Why is there a change at week 4 or 5?
Use the building a house analogy, foundation is built in the first three weeks. What are important during the first three weeks are not the sales, it’s the habits.
The work statistics tell the tale. Contacts and hours are the most important. By looking at that, sales managers can make a prediction about the size of the person’s check.
Two main reasons people don’t work and develop those habits in the first 3 weeks:
Rain:
“I DON’T USE MY CELL PHONE DURING THE DAY. WHEN I GO
TO WORK, I GO TO WORK.”
1313
Paint a picture of getting soaked, and your socks are making that wet squishing noise with every step and you’re getting blisters. What do you do? You carry extra socks in the car always and also those rain slip-on boots like “duck shoes.” Then paint a picture of soaked clothes and how heavy they are. Then that wind hits you and it chills you to the bone even though it’s hot outside. What do you do? Always carry a poncho. Slip it on and boom, problem solved. Finally paint a picture of their pre approach pad soaked and writing on it doesn’t work. They go back to someone they already talked to accidentally and they’re maps are useless. What do you do? Buy a gallon size Ziploc bag and slip it over your pre approach pad. Car Problems Paint the picture of them dealing with car issues, stuck in the middle of nowhere, raining, etc. Ask them for a solution. Probably they will say “well go get you car fixed then keep working.” Then I tell them the Three Step Travis Lopes Plan for dealing with car issues. *See page 14 for the Three Step Travis Lopes Plan!5. Sales School (Last meeting you have individually before you leave
for sales school)I sit down and tell them about the importance of sales school. I talk about how every year, based on the way people treat doing work in sales school, they have a good first week, if they have a good first week, they have a good first three weeks, and if they have a good first three weeks, they have a good summer. Essentially, sales school is the foundation for the summer. (Side note, last year, right after we left Nashville, Sheridan said that our sales school was the best sales school he has ever been a part of, and sure enough...)
I tell them that there are three main ways or attitudes that top first years have during sales school: they are focused, they are flexible, and they are coachable.
Focused: not wasting a second, doing what they are supposed to be doing, waking up and studying at breakfast, not wasting time with smoke breaks, or TV, or whatever. Just studying or practicing in any spare moment they have. (This covers the “you’re trying to control me objection”)
Flexible: in sales school I will ask them to do things that they won’t like, like cold showers, leaving cell phone in the room, packing a lunch, etc. They need to be flexible and be ready for anything. (Cover those issues here, in advance)
Coachable: I tell them that sales school is a litmus test for coach ability, because it’s something they have committed to me that they will be, and it’s their first test of that commitment. I paint the picture of how sometimes they will feel like they are so behind on, for example, closing steps. Then I will come in and say “ok, now, let’s do approaches.” And their brain will tell them, “no, approaches? No way. It doesn’t matter how many doors I get in if I can’t close the sale. Plus we’ve practiced approach a million times. My approach is good to go. I need to work on the close.” and in that moment they will have a choice to be coachable or not. I ask them to trust me, there is a system that has been in place for 150 years, and I am following it. So. go against what “makes sense” in their brain and be coachable.
14
#1 Get a AAA card before the summer so they will have free towing (a lot of insurance carriers also provide this for free so have them ask their parents if it’s available). #2 Buy a hide-a-key from Wal-Mart, make a copy of the car key, and magnetize it under the car. That way locking your keys in your car isn’t an hour long, off-schedule event. #3 Finally, when they first check in at their city hall, or buy a map at a gas station, tell them to ask about a reliable car mechanic and circle where it is on the map. Tell them to save some turf around that area. Then when your car breaks down, you tow it to the place on your map and instead of being negged out you’re actually excited because they have been saving this “golden turf” all summer.
The Three Step Travis Lopes Plan
Spicy, Cheesy Artichoke DipThis recipe is about as easy as it gets. Simply chop some artichoke hearts, add 5 ingredients, and put it in the oven. If you wanted to amp up the spice level, try using a fresh jalapeno
instead of the canned ones.
Ingredients6 1/2 oz can of marinated artichoke hearts
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
1/2 cup Mozzarella cheese (grated)
1 small can diced jalapenos (drained)DirectionsPreheat the oven to 350.
Drain the artichokes and the jalapenos very well. Coarsely chop the artichoke hearts into bite-sized pieces then add the mayo, sour cream, parmesan, and mozzarella. Mix this together well in a mixing bowl.
Add mixture to an oven-safe baking dish and bake at 350 for 30 minutes or so. You’ll want the top to be golden brown. Let cool for a while so you don’t burn your face off and serve with tortilla chips.

PAY IT FORWARD
Apart from making an impact during the summer months selling our educational products door-to-door, our dealers also make an impact in the winter months.
While traveling in South America, Michelle Miller (Junkyard Dawgs), along with Jenn Koger (Eagle/Blitz) and Erin Yonke (Junkyard Dawgs)
found time to make a difference in the lives of some orphans. Specifically, orphans at the orphanage started in Bogotá, Columbia by four summer alumni Jacob Grady (2003-2006).
As soon as they arrived at the airport, they took a cab to the orphanage – afterall, they were lugging around heavy Spanish Ask Me’s.
Some of the girls were waiting for them, speaking in broken English the best they could to welcome them and introduce themselves. They took pictures, played games, sang and the girls even brushed their hair. (They were age eight through 14.)
