University of GlasgowWhat is your biggest personal accomplishment outside of SW? Anyone who’s known me a while would probably say getting engaged to Morgan. Out of my league? Yes.What is your biggest personal accomplishment with SW? Besides getting featured in The Pony? Probably being #1 First Year in the #1 International Team my first summer. What’s the hardest part of recruiting and how do you overcome it? For me, name collecting is the hardest part to love. I try to remind myself that I do this job for the students who are interested and are willing to grow, not for the ones who aren’t. I just do my best to stay focused on helping those students have a great summer and grow as much as they can. When I’m doing that, the job is fun.What do you do to balance your life during the school year? I read my Bible a lot and I’m involved in my local church, along with its football (soccer…) team and the worship band. Protecting my quality time with loved ones and friends is so important too. When you’re chasing down high goals and working a busy schedule,

you learn to prioritise. So when I make my schedule, I take some time to figure out what my top priorities are, schedule them first, then fill in everything else around them. Skype dates with Morgan, time with friends and family and at least one night a week on the couch – these get scheduled first.What is your motivation for building a team? Three things. Firstly, if you’re going to stay around SW for a while you want to have something to show for it. At some point you just decide that it’s time to start doing well. I’m at that point. Secondly, I can’t list all the incredible things I’ve learned and experienced through this job and I’m so thankful to have had somebody come and talk to me about SW. So, naturally, I want to pass that on. Finally, a year from now I want to look back over the last 12 months and see how far I’ve come. I want to know that I’ve grown and that I’ve helped others grow along the way. Recruiting gives you that unique chance to pour into others’ lives, and into your own.What is your favourite quote? “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” - Marianne WilliamsonWho is your biggest mentor? I have three. God, Morgan and Robin Mukherjee.Why do you love what you do? The world (or at least my campus) seems to be filled with people who aren’t sure if they’re allowed to be successful. They don’t know if it’s what they’re cut out for. That makes me sad. I love what I do because through SW, I can help people teach themselves that as long as they’re willing to pay the price, they are capable of anything they put their mind to. What we do is inspiring, it’s meaningful, it’s wholesome and we are very lucky be where we are right now.

Name: Rita Streator Title: Customer Contact and Communication’s Manager How long with SW? 5 years What do you do? I oversee the day to day operations of the Customer Contact Center. We process over 75,000 calls, 19,000 emails, and 15,000 pieces of mail annually. What’s new in your department? Over the past year, we have been focused on automation. By this summer, merchandise returns, postage paid labels, customer orders and dealer credits will be automated in the Contact Center. Favorite part of job? I love when a dealer or sales manager comes up to me at checkout and hands me a thank you card, or to give me a big hug and tell me how much they’ve appreciated my help and support. Least favorite part? Dishonest customersHobbies? Reading, cooking, and spending time with my familyMost inspiring thing you have seen or been a part of at SW? The birth of the new Advantage Study System. To be a part of a company whose mission is to touch every family in America is truly inspiring. How do you feel you are able to help dealers most? There are so many ways that I feel I am able to help dealers. Dealers and sales managers have called me during the summer to ask for help with a negative situation. Anytime I can speak to a customer, school district or police officer on the dealer’s behalf is always positive. If I can personally handle an issue, then the dealer can stay on schedule. Favorite cheese? Smoked ProvoloneWho are people you admire at SW and why? I admire my staff for the work that they do. The Contact Center can get some pretty negative customer calls some days and to remain confident and composed in the manner in which this do is admirable. What kind of vehicle do you drive? (The title was for all you fans of alliteration.) Question: How would you like to have a solid, high-producing team this summer? How would you like a team that does well—

in spite of your management skills? If so, read on. If not, skip to the next article.

I’ve been travelling to a number of campuses this year, PC’ing with student managers. One disconcerting trend I’ve noticed: in-school managers are getting addicted to cold prospects! Yes, it’s true! There’s something alluring about phoning strangers with no downside if they say no. Young student managers have told me that they were stressed out about juggling school and SW because they were spending so much time prospecting.

They’ve told me they have to guard their “phone time”—i.e. they have to spend time each week prospecting cold names through summer work questionnaires, or they just get out the school directory and start “dialing for dollars.” Many B managers are emulating a full-timer’s schedule. ATTENTION IN-SCHOOLERS: (Yes, I’m shouting.) Talk to your friends about Southwestern! Recruit friends!

Why?There is already a trust relationship, a 1) foundation to build on.You can be an unskilled manager and still 2) they will do well.You’ll have greater success with their 3) parents.It’s hard to build relationships from 4) scratch—ask a full time recruiter.

Recruiting a team of friends is like working Big Brick: it’s tough to get started, but once you get into the area, it’s wonderful. Deliveries go well. But I’ll admit it’s harder on the front end than say, working trailer courts (analogous to calling cold lists of names). Sure, there’s little emotional downside—nothing at stake—if you get a “no” from a stranger, no big deal. But building a team of strangers into a cohesive, fighting unit? Hmmm. Much harder and much more time consuming. Sure, in trailer courts you get lots of demos--lots of activity! But deliveries are hell.

Fact vs. Fiction concerning Dr. Rock and Behind the Music:

Questions have arisen after the Freddies debut of Dr. Rock – Behind the Music and Southwestern’s Greatest Hits. You can find both of these videos on our Vimeo or YouTube channels.

Fiction:• References to playing a solo gig at an IA Holiday Inn• That we somehow shot the action footage recently• That we composed the SW Greatest Hits in a studio recently• Lee can play guitar, banjo or violin• His addiction to Pop Tarts• That he was beaten by the Soundgarden roadies• Southwestern’s Hard Knockin’ Deep Country does exist in some form

Facts:• Lee did play in a band called Storm, which toured the Midwest and the photos from the 1980s are featured in the Behind the Music video• Lee played rhythm keyboards, not guitar• Someone actually did sling-shot their panties at Lee’s performance in Sales School, ca. 1991• He performed weekly in Sales School on air guitar for years• The music from the SW Greatest Hits CD was originally composed by Mike Gay, was on cassette tape, and was considered motivational, not ridiculous• The leather jacket worn by Lee in the Greatest Hits infomercial was Swordfish’s that he actually wore for years growing up• The Greatest Hits infomercial was filmed entirely in Tabitha Taylor’s living room• The flying V guitar played by Lee in the old footage from the ‘90s as well as the reunion show has no strings• The song played at the reunion show was hotly debated for weeks prior to the Freddies. He almost played Cheap Trick’s Surrender. Which was the better choice?

I had a chance to sit down with Jessica Kroll, a PT major from UNL. She has an incredibly busy schedule, lots of classes, lots of campus involvement with sports, she’s an I.A…. She can’t be at info sessions every day. She can’t spend 3 hours a night on the phone. (Can you afford to?) What she’s doing is approaching her friends and acquaintances—just a few a week—notebooking them on her own time. Jessica has a solid team that’s growing and staying with her. That’s recruiting the smart way.

I recruited five people on my first team. Two were from my fraternity, one was an ex-girlfriend (careful here), and two others were their friends. I wasn’t the best manager or recruiter, but on the other hand, I didn’t have to spend 300 hours on the phone and in follow up to get them out on the bookfield. I don’t think I even called all their parents! But guess what: because we knew each other, that made up for a lot of deficiencies on my part.

So I hope you’re still reading, and I’ve made a case for friends. In-schoolers: Get out of the campus directories! You shouldn’t be gathering thousands of names from summer work questionnaires! Forget putting up signs. You are not full time recruiters, so don’t act like them. Most of you I’ve visited with are shooting for a 5 – 7 person team. You can, and should, do that through your network of friends.

Be bold. Rock on!

AVOSALSAHere is the situation: you have a big bag of tortilla chips and you can’t decide what dip you want. Salsa? Guacamole? This recipe combines the best of both worlds so you don’t have to decide. The best thing about this recipe is that you don’t need a stove, microwave, or any heat source! All you need are the ingredients, a knife, a good sized bowl, and a spoon. Enjoy!

Ingredients2 ripe, Fresh California Avocados, seeded, peeled and diced1 large ripe tomato, diced¼ cup f inely chopped red onion2 cloves garlic, minced2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro1 large lime, juice only½ tsp. ground cumin¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper¼ tsp. salt

Instructions1. In medium bowl, combine all ingredients.2. Toss well and maintain chunky consistency.

Serves 4

Serving Suggestions: Serve with tortilla chips or on top of grilled beef, poultry or seafood.

GETTING EVERYTHING DONE (and Staying Sane)By: Lee McCroskey

Last week, we explored what people mean when they use the term “balance”. If you’ve taken time to think about what that means or looks like to you, now it’s time to ponder the value of said balance. Step one is definition. Now on to the next step.

Why is “being balanced” important to you? What’s the payoff?

If there is little value in becoming balanced, you won’t change. However, if you have compelling reasons to develop more equilibrium in your work/school/life, then something happens. Just like having emotional purposes in the summer, you can think through why becoming more balanced is important to you now.

So, come up with a few strong reasons why balance would serve you well—maybe being more balanced would help you feel more in control of your world. Perhaps it would give you more peace of mind. For sure it would reduce your stress level. Maybe you could have a sense of getting more done, and getting it done calmly. Being more balanced may mean you could even manage to do more, but not frenetically! Perhaps you could have more free time since you could be managing your schedule better.

My next assignment for you if you’re currently out of balance is to answer the questions I’ve posed above. What would the value be for you in being more balanced? Is it worth changing? Go think.

Pay It ForwardOur company is a generous one. Not only are we involved with many causes as a corporation, our students are also very giving on an individual level. This week’s Pay It Forward highlights the efforts of Omar Iribe (right), who participated in the grueling but rewarding Dance Marathon for 26 hours!

UCLA DM is helping the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Project Kindle, OneHeartland, and UCLA AIDS Institute reach more women, children and families around the world, one step at a time. And our own Omar Iribe helped raise over $6,200 (#1 in fundraising for this event). The Dance Marathon raised over $410,000 to help and improve the lives of the kids, families, and everyone affected by this disease.

Omar said, “To be quiet honest, it was a challenge to keep dancing and standing for 26 hours, I mean I Love dancing and I’ve done it for 6 hours straight at the most, but tons of energy being exposed for that long was a bit different. When I did start to feel tired and somewhat weak in my body I thought of all of you who helped me in this cause, so I could’t stop and my motivation and energy was even stronger and new dance moves came to live :) Seeing the kids who are affected by this disease and were there to say thank you to us made all the hard work and effort so worth it. These kids talked about how they also have dreams and aspirations and all they want is a ‘normal life’. The kids, Oriana, Orin, Angie, Ian, Rumor, Katelyn, and others came up to us, danced, and were having such a good time, you had to be there, it made me feel so blessed and appreciative of everything in life.”
