Adam Michnik is a Polish historian, essayist, former dissident, public intellectual, and the editor-in-chief of the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza. In the 1970s Michnik became one of the leaders of the Committee of the Defense of Workers. He continue his opposition activities in Solidarity trade union. In 1981, after imposition of martial law he was arrested and jailed. He played a crucial role during the 1989 Polish Round Table Talks, which led to the collapse of communism in Poland. He served one term in Polish Parliament but later withdrew from active politics but has “maintained an influential voice through journalism”. The Fiedorczyk Lecture

by

Vivian Reed

entitled

"An American in Warsaw"

Wednesday, October 9th, 2019 at 7:00pm Founders Hall, Davidson Building

Central Connecticut State University

New Britain, CT

The lecture will discuss Hugh Gibson, a notable twentieth century diplomat, who had a knack of finding himself in the right place, at the right time for something of global interest to

happen. The rebirth of Poland was one of those things, and Gibson was on hand to participate in and bear official witness to the momentous events as the US Minister to Poland, 1919-1924.

Vivian Reed has engaged in multiple occupations since studying political science in college. She

was introduced to Hugh Gibson, during her studies on Herbert Hoover for her Master’s thesis. By establishing a warm friendship with Hugh’s son, Michael Francis Gibson, Vivian was offered a unique opportunity to understand and interpret Hugh’s writings. Because her own mother was born in Warsaw, Vivian has a strong connection to Poland and a personal reason to begin with Gibson’s Polish years (1919-1924) – some of the most pivotal of his career. An American in

Warsaw was born from a series of fortunate events and persistent historical work.

This event is FREE and the public is cordially invited.

Refreshments will be served.
