Repeating Survey Programs MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Imager) -- cover 0.5-30 keV -- Scan the 80%-95% sky every 92 minutes.
PTF (Palomar Transient Factory) -- 1.28m telescope with FOV~7.78 deg2
-- 5 days cadence (40%), 0.5 day cadence (41%) -- cover 1000 deg2/night -- g’, r’ filters
Pan-STARRS -- 1.8m telescope with FOV~ 7 deg2
-- 3 pi survey with 7 days cadence -- cover 60000 deg2/night -- g’,r’,I’,z’ filters
Rau et al. 2009
Objects we plan to study
1. Core-Collapse supernovae (Ib,Ic, and II)
2. X-ray flashes discovered by the Swift/XRT and the MAXI (e.g. 2008D)
3. Optical transients discovered by PS1 and PTF
4. X-ray transients discovered by MAXI
Our StrategiesA. Supernovae -- Long term monitoring (days to year) -- Multi-band observations -- Cadence : 1-2 days or longer coverage for each SN B. X-ray flashes -- Need quick response -- High time resolution monitoring , multi-band -- Cadence : 1-5 days after the discovery
C. Transients found by PS1 and MAXI -- long term monitoring (days to months) -- multi-band monitoring -- Cadence : observe everyday for selected targets
Scientific topics
1. Investigate the connection between GRBs and supernovae
2. Systematic study on physical parameters of CCSNe( e.g. distribution of Ni mass, kinetic energy of the explosions)
3. Make CCSNe photometric templates for
investigating high-z SNe.
4. Identify optical counterparts for x-ray transients.
5. Study temporal evolution of new types of transients.
Experience from GRB follow-up
1. More than 22 refereed papers were published
2. Circulated more than 110 GCN Circular.
3. Four students got PHD with EAFON data.
The EAFON results
We need similar network for photometric and spectroscopic
observations Photometric program
-- Lulin 1-m telescope (ToO, 2010 Feb.)
-- Maidanak 1.5m telescope (planning)
Spectroscopic program
-- BOAO 1.8m telescope (PI program, 2010 Jan.)
-- Xinglong 2m telescope (planning)
With Maidanak 1.5m telescope Stable weather (especially in summer) and
good seeing.
Good image quality (Maidanak1.5m+SNUCCD, pix =0.266”, Lulin 1m+PICCD, pix ~ 0.56”)
High-QE in U (~50%) and I (~90%) filters

Lulin 1m + Maidanak 1.5mA.
SN2009kf discovered by PS1
Summary
1.We plan to study temporal evolution of
transients with small telescopes.
2.With experience on EAFON, we could
build similar network for transient study.
3.The program started with Lulin 1-m this year.
4.Our next step is building same program with Maidanak 1.5 m telescope.
