Dear Editors,This is a picture of Bandit. He was 2-months-old when he was found roaming on a busy street alone. A friend of mine almost hit him with their car, they thought Bandit was a skunk, but when they got close they saw this scared puppy. They could not keep him so we took Bandit into our home and added him to our family. Every-one loves him and he puts a smile on your face. Due to his loving nature and disposition, he will be start-ing community service this week at the Willow Val-ley Retirement Community and making rounds with dif-ferent residents. I know he will fill their hearts with love. Bandit was a sad story that has a happy ending. We are glad that he was found before he was hurt.Lisa Thomas of Lancaster, PA

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Welcome to all creatures great and small, and Happy Holidays! Our winter issue of The Pet Planet Magazine features a determined 12-year-old Monica Plum. Monica is “On a Mission” to equip local fire departments with pet oxygen masks, because you are never too young to make a difference. We

are happy to bring you a great story on the ASPCA’s “Dog of the Year.” Pearl, a rescue herself, was trained by The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and was instrumental in many rescues in Haiti’s earthquake aftermath. With a New Year on the horizon wouldn’t it be better to include a healthier lifestyle to our New Year’s resolutions. To help you along the way we have a great article from The American Heart Association entitled “Let Fido Be Your Personal Trainer.” You won’t want to miss this one!

As always, you can count on us to include our readers’ pets’ photos in the “Pet Planet Pix” section. We wish there was enough room for all the great submissions…so if you don’t see your pet’s photo in this edition keep checking our website at www.petplanetmagazine.com to see if your pet is featured on our “Home” page. You will also find our usual slate of goodies such as the tail-wagging recipe in “Barks & Nibbles” and our heart-warming “Pet Poetry.” Debra White shares her thoughts in this issue’s “Book Review” Orphans of Katrina. We feature an array of pet related businesses and organiza-tions that help you and your pet get the most out of life, please be sure to patronize their establishments. Tell them we sent you!

Feel free to send us treats or discipline to: [email protected]

Wishing you and yours a safe and happy winter season. May dog bless us, “everyone.”

From all of us here at The Pet Planet Magazine.

A PET’S TEN COMMANDMENTS

1) My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2) Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3) Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4) Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5) Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voicewhen speaking to me.

6) Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7) Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8) Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old and weak.

9) Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10) On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there,

because I love you so.

Pearl is my companion, my family. She’s by my side 24/7—at work and at home. She’s a real sweetheart, but when we get called to a disaster and it’s ‘show time,’ she gets down to business, always performing at 100%. She has been good to me, and I am good to her. Now we’re going to New York City to accept this award. It doesn’t get any better!

Pancake was found tied to a bench near our place and after look-ing, and waiting, we realized she was left there to stay. Initially, she was covered with fleas and very timid, but now she now has a good bill of health and is ready for a home. She gave us all the impression that she was sad and was missing a family…how sad- and we will never know what happened. She is VERY sweet and will warm up to anyone who shows her the smallest bit of lovin’.Rescue Rehab Home, [email protected]: www.rescuerehabhome.org/App.html

Tristan is a 2-year-old kitty with a lot of love to give. He is super affectionate. Tristan has all four de-claws (he was turned in like that, we would never do that to a cat). He is up to date on vaccines, luk-aids negative, and neutered. His adoption fee is $100.00. If you are interested in Tristan, please fill out an on-line application. Tristan is waiting to meet you!www.chesed-rescue.org

Help Them Live a Longer, Healthier Life

Most countries have a surplus of companion animals and are forced to euthanize or disregard their great suffering. The surplus is in the millions in the United States alone.

By having your dog or cat surgically sterilized, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens and you will enhance your pet’s health and quality of life.

Both female dogs and cats benefit from spaying, which eliminates their heat cycles and generally reduces the negative behaviors that may lead to owner frustration and, ultimately, a decision to relinquish the pet to a shelter. Most importantly, early spaying of female dogs and cats helps protect them from serious health problems later in life such as uterine infections and breast cancer.

Neutering male dogs and cats reduces the need to breed and can have a calming effect that makes them less inclined to roam and more content to stay at home. Neutering your male pet also improves his health by reducing the risk of prostate disease, testicular cancer and infections.
