Sable, a lion rampant ermine doubled queued, armed and langued gules,

Whatever appears in italics in this Pedigree and Notes is additional matter*gathered from trustworthy sources, such as a MS.History of the family written, in1854, by Edward Dalton, Esq., D.C.L., F.S.A., and by him dedicated and presentedto Thomas Stokes of Stanshawes Conrt, Esq., and until lately (as was this Pedigree)in the possession of Adrian Stokes of Sidmouth, now deceased ; Aubrey's « WiltsCollections,' Bible registers, Visitation of Wilts, etc. Any notes, additions, andcorrections willbe gratefolly received by the contributor. A «A. S.

The Pedigree is about three-quarters of a yard wide, and 4J yards long, com-posed ofseveral skins glued together. Itcommences withAdam de Stokke, 1812 ;and the last date is 1661, soon after which itappears to have been drawn out;

the last name is Thomas, son of Captain Thomas Stokes. The arms are wellblazoned in colours, amounting to over sixty coats ;and where those of any familywere not ascertained blanks are left. Much collateral information is given, andcontemporary pedigrees of families into which the Stokes family married, par-ticularly those of Snell and Gore. Towards the close isan esontoheon of six qnarters,and on the skin, above this, is a drawing of a lion rampant ermine double queued,holding a tilting-spear, thereon a pennon ;at the head of the pedigree is a lionholding the shield of Stokes. There are several extracts from deeds, etc., and thewhole is well execnted and in good preservation' (lBs4). At the close of thepedigree of Snell is a date

"now living,1701."

The windows of this Chappell were formerly wellpainted and adorned withthe pictures ofthe foundr,his wife and children, but about the year 1648. In that rebellious sacrilegious andpretending age to Holiness these things were lookt on as superstition and at the painted glasswas defaced and broken by William Somner of Sene.
