Learning in the Learning Center has never been so cool! Staff writer/typist : Lauryn White
Do you need extra help with reading, writing, or math? If you do, then you probably
know Mrs. Reid, Mrs. Nereim, Mrs. Abernathy, and Mrs. Pontius. Sometimes you’ll see them in
the portables, or in the learning center helping kids. A question most students at Lakes ask is,
How many students do the L.C. women see in one day? Well, Mrs. Reid sees 40 kids that are
mostly 4th-6th graders. Mrs. Abernathy sees about 30 children that are K-3rd each day and Mrs.
Pontius sees approximately 25 (including the kids that she greets in the morning). Also, Mrs.
Nereim sees 15 kids in one day! That’s about 110 kids they see in a SINGLE DAY!
Sometimes you may see them talking amongst themselves when they have free time, or
talking to students. Mrs. Abernathy says, “I like to interact with everyone.” The ladies love to
be surrounded by students that are confident and ready to
learn! Mrs. Nereim, Mrs. Reid, Mrs. Abernathy and Mrs. Pon-
tius make learning really fun and cool. They are bubbly and al-
ways encouraging and determined to get you the academic help
you need! Take it from Danielle T. in Mrs. Brown’s class, “I
know Mrs. Reid and Mrs. Nereim. Mrs. Nereim is very cool and
nice and funny and Mrs. Reid is a really good math group
teacher and she is very nice.” Here is the thing; don’t ever feel
bad, because you need extra help, because with the help of
these ladies, you’re sure to have a blast!
Plants, trees, flowers. . . Oh my----The Leopard Crew! Staff writer/typist/photographer: Leif Hunter
Do you like the outdoors, working in nature and learning about plants and trees ? Well,
if so the Leopard Crew is the perfect after school activity for you. Mrs. Felix has run the Leop-
ard Crew for 11 years. She stated, “I did not expect 100 children to sign-up this year and it
takes lot of time to organize and put the teams together. It's challenging to keep up with my
class and the Leopard Crew.” She also said, “I hope the kids enjoy taking care of our school and
playing and working. I hope they feel proud when they see their
projects around the campus.”
Not only does Mrs. Felix enjoy the outdoors and main-
taining the school grounds, but so does Mirabella G. from Mrs.
Davis Reid's third grade class, she said, “I joined the Leopard
Crew to learn how to plant plants. I can't join the Leopard Crew
next year because I am moving.” Katryna T., also from Mrs.
DR’s class stated, “I joined the Leopard Crew because I like go-
ing outdoors. I want to join the Crew until I'm in 6th grade.” Continued on page 6.
Mrs. Reid, Mrs. Nereim, & Mrs.
Pontius make learning fun.

Big Time Rush, a popular boy
band Staff writers: Haleigh Williams & Cedric Maser Typist: H.Williams
Have you heard of Big Time Rush? If not you’re
missing out on a lot. First, of all they’re a boy band,
their career started when a TV show aired in 2009. The
first episode was ‘Big Time Audition’, a sneak preview
of the upcoming series.
Kendall Schmidt is the band’s leader. His career
started when he was five in a CHEX commercial. He
moved on from show to show (brief appearances never
long term until Big Time Rush). He also co-wrote the
song “Music Sounds Better with U.”
Logan Henderson originally had a role as a
small bully on Friday Night Lights. He also had other
small roles on other shows too. His role 1023143 on the
show BTR would be the brains, Logan Mitchell. Mira-
belle G., a 3rd grader in Mrs. Davis- Reid’s class likes
him because, “He’s cute and nerdy.” Logan co-wrote one
of their new songs “Cover Girl.”
Carlos Pena Jr. is the oldest of the group; you
might know him from Ned’s Declassified
School Survival Guide as King Bee. His role on
the show is Carlos Garcia, a corn-dog loving, helmet
wearing guy.
Finally, it comes down to James Maslow. He
made an appearance on iCarly in the episode ‘I Saw
Him First’ as Shane. He joined San Diego’s Children’s Big Time Rush continued on page 5.

Cool summer evenings with a slight breeze,
Lilies in full bloom as pretty as can be.
Bees working furiously at the first taste of
fall,
trees in full leaf and sunflowers tall.
The scent of fresh cut grass and outdoor
grills,
the coldness of popsicles giving you chills.
Reading a book in a hammock
under a tree,
swatting at mosquitoes who
won’t let you be.
When will those days come?

Lakes Bingo Night, a
PTA success Staff writer: Emily Kankelborg
BINGO! I got a prize,
yay! That is what you would
have heard if you attended
Bingo Night. At Bingo Night
you play bingo and eat pizza.
Briana Barnes, a former
Lakes student and Mr. Bar-
nes’ daughter, was the per-
son to do the announcements
about what was happening
and called out the bingo
numbers. Briana replied, “I
had a great time and I can’t
wait until next year to come
back.” Taylor T. from Mrs.
Russell’s class said, “It is
kind of fun getting the
prizes.” Oh yeah, I almost
forgot, there was an auction
with baskets you could bid
on and win. The Pamper
Your Pet basket was sold for
the most, it sold for $80 to
Zac Q. from Mr. Cahill’s
class! The money from the
baskets will be go into the
fund for the purchase of the
new playground equipment!
Mr. McDonald commented,
“Bingo Night is great and I
think there would have been
more people if it was rain-
ing.” (It was the first sunny
day in months.) Thank you
to the PTA for putting on
Bingo Night. Also, thank you
to all of the volunteers who
helped, including the News-
paper students. It was a
great event! We even had
kids help with composting
and it was a great event. So
you should plan on coming
next year to have a fun time!
Berry Shortbread Dreams: a recipe worth trying! Staff writer/typist: Mira Smith
As you get home from school everyday, instead of your usual chips or soda
as a snack, why don’t you try some jam filled cookies? This shortbread recipe is
amazing and really easy! It has only five ingredients, and I bet you have all of them in your kitchen.
Ingredients
1 cup butter, softened 2/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup seedless berry jam (I recommend raspberry)
First, in a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the extract and gradually add
flour until dough forms a ball easily (it should be a little sticky). Then, cover and refrigerate the
dough for 1 hour or until easy to handle.
Roll the dough you just made into 2 in. balls. Place each one inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Using your thumb or a wooden spoon handle, make an indentation in the center and fill it with jam.
Be sure to level the jam out , or it will not 1014547 cook evenly!
Bake at 350 degrees F for 14-18 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove from
baking sheet and transfer to paper towel to cool. Note: Parent permission needed to use the oven. This recipe and others found at Allrecipes.com
wand. You even try to de-
feat a dragon. The more lev-
els you defeat, the harder it
gets.
Many students from
Lakes have visited the Great
Wolf Lodge. Elena P., from
Mrs. Kamenz’s class said, “I
swam in the water park and
went to the arcade. I like
the water park.” Visiting
the lodge is a great family
activity. “My brother did
the Magic Quest, but I pre-
fer the water ok that they
give you with the park,” said
Thomas Shively, in Mr. Pon-
tius’s class. “My favorite
part was this stand of ice
cream cones and I went
there.”
Get ready to yell ,”We’re go-
ing to the lodge!”
It’s a hot day out.
Maybe your parents will ask
you if you want to go to the
Great Wolf Lodge Water
Park. What would you say?
Staying overnight there is so
much fun and you would be
able to play in the water
park. It will be cold when
you first get in, but then it
will feel warm. It is about 80
degrees inside the water
park with really awesome
water slides. It is only about
a 30 minute drive to Grand
Mound where the lodge is
located, just off I-5.
One slide is a swirly slide
and another is a tornado.
Then there is a river slide
and a wave pool to play in.
There is also a little kid’s
pool for little brothers and
sisters to go in. They have
hot tubs in case you get cold
and need to warm up. Then
when you finish swimming,
go down to your room to
shower and change clothes.
You will be all ready to visit
the restaurant in the lodge.
They have ribs, pizza and
hamburgers, just to name a
few items. The food is
pretty good!
Another thing to do
while you stay, is to buy a
magic wand. Magic Quest is
a game where you go treas-
ure hunting to find crystals
and objects in a book that
they
give

Pals Program to the
rescue
Staff writer/typist:
June Taufetee
Are you
a new student that needs help
getting around? Well the PALS
PROGRAM is here to help! Mrs.
Turlove is the staff member that
put this helpful program
together. This helpful group
helps by; taking a new student
on a tour around our school,
meeting the specialist teachers,
and the office ladies. This helpful
group does this because they
want our new student to feel
comfortable, and welcome to our
school. Mrs. Turlove stated, “It’s
a great way for kids to know the
school. And good for the 5th and
6th graders to show some
leadership skills, and give kids
the tour.” Brianna S. In 5th
grade from Miss. Browns class is
participating in the PALS
PROGRAM. She stated “Yes, I do
like to interact with the new
students I meet.” So if you’re a
new student that needs help
getting around, the PALS
PROGAM is here to help.
Dear 6th and 5th grade Aspire/TAG Parents,
Would you like to say a few special words to your 5th or 6th
grader as they prepare to leave elementary and enter middle
school? If you do, The Paws of Time Newspaper has an oppor-
tunity for you to consider. The last issue of the year will be a
fundraising opportunity for us and a special way for parents to say
good luck to their future middle school child. For only $5.00 you
can help our newspaper and wish your child well. We will include
a (2X1 inch space) head-shot photo of your child and a tagline of
no more than 15 words. (You can view last year’s 7th issue on our
website.)
You can either email a photo to [email protected] or
we can use the school photo that was taken in the fall. All photos
are due by May 18th. (Limited space available, please consider us-
ing kindergarten or younger age photos.)

PSP mania, get your game on Staff writer/typist: Maria O'Leary
The PSP-3000 (Play Station Portable) is
a hand-held game console that has taken Amer-
ica by storm! It's rating is a 4.3 out of 5 stars
according to the PlayStation website. It was
first introduced in 2003, but did not go on the
market until May 11, 2004. Brennan M. in Mr.
Cahill's class says, “You can take it anywhere
you want!”
The PSP has lots of cool options! The
first option is the photo perk, where you can
download any pictures you would like. A second
option is the music perk, which means you can
listen to all your favorite songs anytime, any-
where! The third option is the video perk. You
can watch any video or movie you download. A
PSP can go online to the “PlayStation” stores to
shop for content, but remember to ask your par-
ents before you go online. The fourth option is
the video game perk. The only way you can use
this perk is if you buy a game disk or download
one from the store.
There are hundreds of games including
action/adventure with comics, movies and TV
shows on the Universal Media Disks (UMD).
One popular game discussed by students at
Lakes is, “Little Big Planet.” Pele M. in Ms.
Felix's class stated, “I like the PSP because you
can watch videos and go online.” A fifth option is
to plug in your PSP to your TV with an exten-
sion cord. You can view your PSP main screen
and select things with the TV remote. You may
also go on Skype.com if you have Wi-Fi so you
can play and chat in multi-player games and
listen to the radio too! The PSP costs about
$130.00 and the games are $10.00 to $30.00 at
department stores. You may
find that PSPs are a fun,
exciting system that you
and your friends are sure to

Leopard Crew cont. from pg. 1
Four teams make up the Crew this year.
Students have been busy clearing the forest's
pathways and working on the outdoor amphi-
theater. They have also been pulling weeds in
the flower beds and planting new flowers. The
murals the students have been creating will be
placed around the school for all students to en-
joy.
The Leopard Crew welcomed a special
guest this year, Marianne Binetti. Mrs. Binetti
is a well known author and plant guru as well as
Mrs. Callero's sister-in-law. Mrs. Binetti spoke
to one of the teams on the Crew and answered
student questions. She also 1008505 walked
around our school campus with the students and
helped them while they planted some new plants
in the school flower beds.
Mrs. Binetti said, “I first became interested in
gardening to get away from my ten brothers.”
Also, what she likes most about being a gardener
is making things beautiful. As a master gar-
dener she teaches other people how to grow
plants. The hardest part about her job is telling
people their plants are going to die. As far as be-
ing a well known author and gardener, Mrs. Bi-
netti shared, “It comes in handy, because I get
free plants.”
Another reason the Leopard Crew is a
great after school activity, you never know who
you’re going to meet that could inspire you to
further your interests. Maybe you could be a
master gardener someday!
Thanks for supporting
the Paws of Time.
Look forward to our
last issue on June 8th
