“Bring On the New Year”
My official United Methodist 2018 Program Calendar has now been broken in. Looking at meetings for January is a necessity in late December. There will be the normal Administrative Council, Finance, and Trustees meetings. A reconstituted Evangelism Committee will also meet in order to plan a New Member Luncheon. I anticipate having a meeting with both parents and students in the 6th through the 12th grades as we form a United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF) group to be led by our new part-time Youth Director, Kendall Stroud.
Kendall is a self-described positive, personable and godly young woman who grew up in this congregation. She has had some formidable foundational faith experiences which include UMYF, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as well as a university Bible Study Fellowship while attending Texas Tech. Kendall possesses a keen vision for starting a new group and is certainly mature for her years. You will want to welcome
her as the newest member of our church staff when she arrives this month. I have high hopes for our youth as they interact with Kendall, grow in their faith and further serve God’s people in the greater community.
As a congregation you can be proud of helping raise a fine example of faith alive in Kendall. Your prayers and offers of support to her and the youth ministry team will go a long way toward growing more young hearts and minds in the example of Christ.
I want to thank the Staff Parish Relations Committee, Finance Committee, and the Church Council for supporting and resourcing this important new ministry position.
I pray we all enjoy a Blessed New Year,
Blessings, Lonnie
New Members Please welcome the Buescher & Duff Families to our church family! Katelyn, Bo and Elouise
Buescher joined us on December 3. Gordon & Amanda Whorton Duff and their children: Alan, Ian and Helen joined on December 17. When you see them, let them know how happy you are that they have become a part of our church family.
Salvation Army Bell Ringers We had many volunteers on Dec. 1 and Dec. 22 ring the bell for the Salvation Army Kettle outside of WalMart. We collected around $2,000 on our two days. All the funds from this endeavor are used here in Hondo to help the needy of our community. Pictured here are four of our helpers, Bette and Mike
Crowell and their grandsons, Joe Henry and Garner Sheffield. Thank you to everyone that helped with this project. We look forward to next year.
Health & Wellness Are You Up-To-Date With Your Recommended Immunizations? Janet Crain, RN, Wesley Nurse
You may not realize that you need vaccines throughout your life. Adults need to keep their vaccinations up to date because immunity from childhood vaccines can wear off over time. You are also at risk for different diseases as an adult. Vaccination is one of the most convenient and safest preventive care measures available. Listed below are the common recommended adult immunizations.
All adults need the seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine every year. Flu vaccine is especially important for people with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, and older adults. Flu is especially prevalent in the United States between October and May each year. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection. That’s why it’s better to get vaccinated early in the fall, before the flu season really gets under way.
Every adult should get the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine once if they did not receive it as an adolescent to protect against pertussis (whooping cough), and then a Td (tetanus, diphtheria) booster shot every 10 years. Td can be given earlier than 10 years after a severe and dirty wound or burn.
Pneumococcal vaccines, which protect against pneumococcal disease, including infections in the lungs and bloodstream are recommended for all adults over 65 years old,
and for adults younger than 65 years who have certain chronic health conditions. There are currently 2 different pneumococcal vaccines—pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13—protects against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23—protects against 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria). The Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) recommends pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for all children younger than 2 years old, all adults 65 years or older, and people 2 through 64 years old with certain medical conditions. CDC recommends pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine for all adults 65 years or older and people 2 through 64 years old with certain medical conditions. These vaccinations cannot be given at the same time, because they induce an immune response in a different way. The PCV13 vaccine is generally given first and then the PPSV23 vaccine is given 12 months later. If someone has already had the PPSV23, they can get the PCV13 immunization 12 months later.
Zoster vaccine (Zostavax), which protects against shingles, is recommended for adults 60 years or older to be given as a single dose. This first vaccine for shingles was licensed in 2006. On October 20, 2017, a new shingles vaccine was approved by the FDA. The new vaccine, Shingrix, will likely be recommended even for
those already inoculated by the older vaccine. An advisory panel of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that all adults 50 and older receive the new two-shot vaccine. The efficacy of this vaccine is significantly higher than Zostavax and it is also better in preventing nerve pain that continues after a shingles rash has cleared. Right now, Shingrix is more expensive and not yet covered by insurance. Talk to your healthcare provider for more information.
The information for this article was condensed from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/adult.html .The information on the new shingles vaccine, Shingrix, was condensed from the WebMD website, https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/news/20171026/theres-a-new-shingles-vaccine----is-it-for-you#1 . For more information, pick up the handouts from the health information table, or see me in my office.
Blessings, Janet Crain

Safe Sanctuaries/Gatherings Next year at end of June 2018
Annual Conference’s new Safe Sanctuary procedures go into effect for ALL Rio Texas churches. These are new requirements for all adults that work with children, youth and vulnerable adults in our church.
There are two separate trainings: one is on the Safe Gatherings website: www.Safe Gatherings.com; the other training can be done online at www. riotexas.org/safetrainings and consists of three modules.
We will be hosting a training on February 17, 2018, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Beginning at 9:00 am, we will have the Safe Gatherings portion of training that most of you will complete online at the time of registration. Any that cannot complete this portion online, please call the church office the first part of our training is going to be for you.
Those of you that have computer access:
1. You will need to go to www.SafeGatherings.com and create a log-in. It will ask you for two references and personal information for a background check. There is a $10 fee that should be billed to the church.
2. Do training on this website for the abuse prevention (about 2 hours) and complete the quiz at the
end. (At our on-site training, this portion will be offered in the first hour.)
3. Then go to www. riotexas.org/safetrainings for the other three modules required. On-site training lasts around two hours; online training takes about three hours to complete. Our on-site training will begin at 10:00 am on February 17, 2018 for this portion.
This is for the safety of our children and our vulnerable adults and is the NEW Rio Texas Policy that we must comply with to stay in good standing. If you need any help or have any questions, please call the office.
Thank you for your time and efforts.

UMW News Happy New Year! The Christmas season brought us many
blessings. Contributions of food for the Food Pantry and socks for the Sock Tree were very generous! Thank you to everyone
who brought something to share. It is now time to begin the new year of mission to our community. The first meeting of United Methodist Women for 2018 was January 3. The next meeting
will be on February 7.
