The past isn’t what it “used” to be

L’imparfait est… a past tense Usually repetative actions Does NOT mean the same as the passé

composé

Utilisez l’imparfait pour… explaining how something “was” telling how things “were” describing what “used to happen” over

and over again in the past.

L’imparfait décrit… what was happening,

What used to happen,

What happened repeatedly in the past.Je mangeais les frites tous les jours pour dîner.

Je parlais avec Jean-Claude avant le dîner.

Nous grimpions aux arbres chez notre grand-mère.

« Was » est unique! It ONLY exists as part of l’imparfait!

The ONLY way to say « used to » en français is to use « l’imparfait »!

L’imparfait describes … persons,

Le chat était content en dormant sur le lit.

Le château était très grand!

L’imparfait is used to give « DETAILS » about a story or setting. Descriptions of people, things, places and conditions all use «l’imparfait » to talk about le passé

C’était juin.

To give dates and times in le passé, especially to describe a TIME or EVENT, you MUST use « l’imparfait »!

2.) Il n’y a pas de réponse correcte parce que Mme a dit que le mot « was » n’existe pas en français.
