SAINT MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA
The Parish of Born: Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, August 26, 1910 Died: September 5, 1997 Canonized: September 4, 2016
Founded 1912 Founded 1909
Padre’s Corner April 14, 2019 Palm Sunday Ehecatl was an Aztec culture wind god, in Mexico City, whose edifice measured 118 feet in length. The 36 meters included a ceremonial court and a pagan temple. Last June the ancient remains were found by researchers with “Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History.” Efforts to identify these artifacts commenced twenty-five years ago, to uncover whatever can be found of the Aztec capital called “Tenochtitlan.” The capital pagan buildings were destroyed by the explorers with Herman Cortes of Spain in 1521. Though there are differences of timing between researchers, the new estimate is that the temple and court were used from 1481-1519 AD (though tour guides preach the area was first occupied by the Aztecs in 1325). In addition to Ehecatl, the other pagan god deities were Tlaloc for rain and agriculture plus Hvitzilopochtli for soldier warriors. Also found was a stairway leading to the court, where sacrificial game ceremonies were performed. The neck bones of thirty children were found also, ceremoniously decapitated. The ancient temple in Mexico City was visited on December 2, 2018. There is not a person who would not shudder at the discovery of sacrificed children, in the belief that the pagan gods would bless the Aztecs with crops and financial fortunes. We would also shudder at the whole notion of slavery in previous centuries, with actual photographs from the 1930’s in the Southern United States of sick-minded individuals laughing while others were being lynched for racial reasons. Society would also recoil at the atrocities in Nazi extermination camps during World War II, such as newborn babies purposely being drowned by nurses and doctors so the Jewish population would not expand. Fast forward to 2019, where the laws of most countries allow for the same legal atrocities at the pagan temples of abortion clinics by nurses and doctors. Is there really any difference of what is being done to the children whether it be ancient cultures, the concentration camps, or evil abortion clinics of today? How can we vote for politicians who see no evil intent with abortions? When this pagan temple was destroyed, the real God of truth had a different plan for that historical district of Mexico City. The “Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heavens” was built over the centuries, from 1573-1813. It was constructed, after the Spanish conquest, on top of the aforementioned pagan temple area of ungodly influence. Spain’s conquistadors had the Gothic cathedral elevated to exert political and religious control over the people. Juan de Zumarroga was the first bishop, and our group visited his tomb in the underground crypt. Tradition and history hold that rocks from this pagan temple were used in the Cathedral, as a testament to God’s powerful victory of goodness over the evil pagan temple practices of human sacrifice. Over the last few centuries until the 1980’s, the government of Mexico saw the Catholic Church as a threat to its power and autonomy. Persecutions in the 1920’s under President Calles were notorious, leading English author Graham Greene to write “The Road Less Traveled” about the persecution reality and the novel “The Power and the Glory” (about the hunt for a priest to kill him). Father Miguel Pro steps into history at this point, while marking the final stop of our pilgrimage to Mexico. Born January 13, 1891 in Guadalupe, Pro entered the Jesuit seminary in El Llano in 1911. After further studies in Belgium, the padre returned to Mexico in 1926. He soon went under-ground, in disguises to say Mass for other brave Catholics who were called Cristeros. He was ultimately arrested on false charges, and executed by a firing squad of government soldiers on November 23, 1927. The execution was completely photographed, under the erroneous belief it would crush the Catholic opposition to the corruption of authorities. Pro denied a blindfold, held a crucifix and rosary, and shouted out “Long Live Christ the King”. 40,000 Mexicans came to his funeral. Pope John Paul II said at his beatification on September 25, 1988: “Neither suffering nor serious illness, nor the exhausting ministerial activity, frequently carried out in difficult and dangerous circumstances could stifle the radiating and contagious joy which he brought to his life for Christ and which nothing could take away. Indeed, the deepest root of self-sacrificing surrender for the lowly was his passionate love for Jesus Christ and his ardent desire to be conformed to Him, even unto death.” These series of reflections on Mexico are now complete, with stories and events that have a universal (Catholic) application to all believers. We all struggle with confusion and discouragement. Yet the heroic missions of Juan Diego, Our Lady of Guadalupe, the believers in the dumps, and Miguel Pro teach us to persevere. The challenges facing our Newburgh parish of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta can be faced with the same certitude of faith and strength. Father Bill

TODAY PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD
First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 Isaiah describes an individual who had been taught by God to reach out to others. He also describes this individual's willingness to be beaten and spit upon, secure that with God's help, he will not be disgraced. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Paul discusses how Jesus did not declare equality with God, but took on human form. He humbled himself enough to accept dying on the cross. God in turn exalted him and wants us to respect Jesus' name and worship him. Gospel: Luke 22:14—23:56 Luke gives a detailed account of Jesus' last supper with the apostles, where Jesus tells them he will soon suffer in fulfillment of God's will. Then Jesus prayed that he might be spared if it suited God's will. After Judas betrayed Jesus, he was arrested. Although Pilate did not think Jesus was guilty of a crime, he gave in to the will of the people, and sentenced Jesus to death on a cross. Then Jesus was crucified and his body laid in a new tomb.
