Statement of Purpose
Rana Asgarisabet
Applicant for OSA Foundation Fellowship at Thorlabs
My interest in Physics has been developed during my school, when I learned the reasons for the
natural phenomenal can be explained by Physical rules. So, besides studding my favorite course,
Physics, in school carefully, I have used to read extra educational books about the nature secret.
This curiosity led me to choose the Physics field to continue my education in university. After
passing a highly competitive nationwide entrance exam with good ranking in Iran, I entered Tabriz
faculty of physics, one of the best physics departments of Iran, in 2003.
During my bachelor degree, in addition to the compulsory courses and laboratories, I passed more
elective courses related to the Optics, because I find it rather interesting area. Since I was
determined to continue learning more in Physics, I participated in the nationwide M.Sc. entrance
exam in Physics in 2006 and I got admission from University of Tabriz in the major atomic and
molecular physics (laser). I choose this field because I was motivated to work experimentally with
very practical light sources, lasers, and investigation the light-matter interactions. During master’s
degree I passed courses such as Electrodynamics, Advanced quantum, Spectroscopy and special
topics (including Quantum Optics, Nonlinear Optics and Laser). I tried to do well in this period and
I ranked second among 6 students in this major.
My great passion for research in Optics and its practical applications, I decided to apply the
Ph.D. degree in Photonics, through participation in the entrance exam held in the University of
Tabriz. I became the second among about 20 applicants in overall in written exam and interview. In
the Ph.D. degree I have listened specialized courses in Photonics as Photonic Crystals, Nonlinear
Optics, Integrated Optics and Optoelectronics of organic materials. I have finished my Ph.D. thesis
with excellent degree and graduated with the rank second among 6 people.
Along with studying I had chance to teach basic and specialized courses for Physics and
Optics&Photonics Engineering students in different universities.
Therefore, I really enjoyed research in Optics and Photonics fields and gained appropriate
experimental and modeling experiences during the past years. Now, I am interested in working on
new researches, learning more and sharing my experiences with enthusiastic students. These goals
are accessible by working in Research institutes or equipped research laboratories. When I heard
about this opportunity in Thorlabs, I found it very related to my research interestsand in direction
of my next research. Specifically, I choose opportunity entitled “High resolution multi-photon
imaging” because I am motivated in using the optical methods and photonics technology for the
human health and improving the quality of the existing diagnostic devices such as optical imaging
systems.
I believe considering my background, working experience and my great interest in Optics and
Photonics researches, I will definitely be an effective member in above mentioned research project.
I am sure contribution in this research position would lead me toward my academic goals.

Summary of Previous Research
Rana Asgarisabet
Applicant for OSA Foundation Fellowship at Thorlabs
In general, I am interested and experienced in linear and nonlinear optics, lasers, optical response
of organic materials and more generally light–matter interactions.
During my M.Sc. degree I worked on “Experimental study of holographic optical storage in Azo
dye doped liquid crystal” under supervision of “Dr. Habib Khoshsima” and “Dr. Habib Tajalli”,
two of the best scientists in the field of Optics and Liquid crystals in Iran.
In more details, we investigated some liquid crystals doped with Azo dye DR1 as a holographic
medium. Interfering two pump beams on the considered cells, lead to the diffraction of probe
beam. Improving the diffraction efficiency and also analyzing the dynamic behavior of the
grating formation was the main goal.
So, while working on my master thesis I obtained experience in preparing pure and dye doped
liquid crystal cells, pump-probe setups, spectroscopy and working with different continuous and
pulsed lasers, including Ar+, Nd:YAG, diode and He-Ne lasers, photodiode and photomultiplier
tube detectors and CCD camera. I published 3 papers from my experimental research results and
three oral and poster conference presentations in Iran. Also, our research on “Dynamic behavior
investigation of refractive index grating in a new nematic liquid crystal doped with azo dye” has
been accepted for oral presentation in SPIE Europe Optics + Optoelectronics conference 2012 in
Prague, which unfortunately I could not participate due to the lake of the financial support.
During my Ph.D. degree I took specialized courses in photonics as, nonlinear Optics, photonic
Crystals, Integrated Optics and Optoelectronics of organic materials. I worked on my Ph.D.
thesis entitled “Study of enhanced second order nonlinear effects in metamaterial structures”
under supervision of Dr. Habib Khoshsima and Dr. Abdolrahman Namdar from University of
Tabriz. Also, Dr. Vahid Ahmadi was my advisor from the School of Electrical and Computer
Engineering in Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran.
In details, I investigated the most interesting and practical feature of resonant metallic inclusions,
for example cut-wires and U-shaped nano-structures, for enhancement of nonlinear response of
the dielectric surrounding these structures. The enhancement was quantitatively shown with
retrieving the effective nonlinear susceptibility with a method, based on transfer matrix relations,
for different second-order nonlinear effects. I have done simulations and modeling with
COMSOL Multiphysics and Matlab. I have 3 published papers and one in preparation from my
Ph.D. thesis. I also presented our research results in two Optics and Photonics annual
conferences in Iran.
In addition, I am lecturer at the University of Bonab. I teach Laser and Advanced Laser
Laboratory for undergraduate and graduate students.
Therefore, I am well experienced in conducting optical experiments along with working with
software.
Based on my interests and abilities, I am going to apply for the research opportunity “High
Resolution Multi-photon Imaging”. In more details, this research is about imaging living
specimens using optical methods and nonlinear interaction of laser pulse with living cells such as
brain tissue. I am sure that my strong interest in using the photonics technology for human
health, my knowledge in nonlinear optics and my great experience in working with different
lasers along with my dedication to work would help me to be a well suited candidate for the
available research position in Thorlabs.
