Welcome, Friends!

Welcome to the 50th edition of the Buckeye Morgan Challenge Horse Show! We know that this

has been the most unprecedented show season ever in the history of our sport. The virus. The

uncertainty. The fear. The boredom. The heroism. The sadness. The reconnecting of families. It

has all come at us in ways we never would have dreamed could happen. But, here we are. We are

all super ready to get back to life as we know it. Life as we love it. We’re going to have a horse

show!

Fifty years! We’re going to celebrate. And, reminisce. This year, more than ever, we need to take

a minute to remember where we came from, who brought us here and how much fun we had

along the way. We hope you will have already sent us pictures to display. And, get your memories

in order for Friday night, because we’re going to have a good, old-fashioned story-telling session.

That will be right after enjoying some great food, a centerpiece cake and a champagne toast.

Once again, thanks to Kari Lyddon and Seven Springs Ranch in Pebble Beach, California we will

also have a fun and exciting event in the show ring on Friday night! A $5,000 Added Amateur

Hunter Pleasure Calcutta will provide an opportunity for both the owners AND the spectators to

get in on some very nice cash prizes and lots of fun! If you’re a bit of a gambler, and you have

good taste in hunter pleasure horses, you could be going home with a big smile on your face, and

an even bigger check in your pocket.

Many of us learned exactly what it’s like to live without the sport we love so much, while

quarantined with nothing but social media to give us a Morgan fix here and there. How lucky are

we to have something so wonderful that missing it is so hard?

If the Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise,

We’ll see you in August!

Show manager,

Sandy Sessink

EXHIBITOR RULES AND INFORMATION

ARENA POLICIES

Lunging will not be allowed at any time in the main show ring, or

the adjacent, “official” warm up area.

Please use the older, outdoor arena closest to the camper area

for lunging, leaving the new arena next to it open for horses

working under saddle or in harness.

The covered outdoor arena will be used for our dressage and

Ranch riding classes on Wednesday and Saturday. You may

work or lunge in that ring if we are not holding classes or setting

up for dressage or ranch riding.

The official warm up ring, which is immediately adjacent to the

show ring, will only be open to horses in the very next class.

When using the official warm up ring, please respect your

proximity to the show ring. There will be no whip cracking, baby

powder, or noise making allowed.

ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES

Horses will be allowed to arrive at 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 9th for an

extra $25 per horse (not per day) early arrival fee. Monday arrivals will

only be charged an extra $20 per horse. There is no extra fee to arrive

on Tuesday morning, or later. All stalls must be vacated by noon on

Sunday, August 16th.

BEDDING

Bedding is $8 per bag and is available from TizWhiz, which is located in

the wooden hut at the out-gate end of the breezeway. Shavings will be

added to your show office bill. Bedding bills to be split to customers must

be done by Friday afternoon prior to checking out. In order to have

shavings delivered to your stalls prior to your arrival on the grounds,

orders must be made by calling Sandy Sessink (248) 207-4956.

CAMPING

We heard you loud and clear. You did not like the flat rate camping fee.

So, we are going back to the daily rate of $35 per night. We ask that you

provide your name, your camper’s make, model and license plate

number, as well as the days you’ll be camping. You can add the fees to

our entry blank, but forms will be in the office to fill out in order to get

your permit.

CLASS HOLDS

In order to put together an exact, predictable time schedule available to

all exhibitors prior to each session, our policy for holds between

classes will be as follows:

1. Holds MUST be requested in writing, or directly through

Sandy at the show office no less than 90 minutes prior to

the session in which the hold is needed.

2. Please contact show manager Sandy Sessink well in

advance to see if your class hold needs warrant a specially

scheduled break (for a ring drag, drawing, or presentation).

3. In order to maintain a predictable schedule for everyone,

holds will NOT be canceled.

4. We will be making available, through announcements, class

sheets and the www.horseshowsbysandy.weebly.com

website, a detailed time schedule including holds,

presentations and ring drags. This information will be

available approximately 45 minutes before the start of each

session, which is why we need your class holds and entries

in a timely fashion.

DRIVER’S LICENSE STATEMENT

Minors who do not have a valid driver’s license which allows them to operate a

motorized vehicle in the state in which they reside will not be permitted to operate a

motorized vehicle of any kind including, but not limited to, golf carts, motorcycles,

scooters, or farm utility vehicles on the competition grounds of licensed competitions.

Minors who have a valid temporary license may operate the above described

motorized vehicles as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a valid driver’s

license. The parent(s), legal guardian(s), or individual who signs the entry blank as a

parent or guardian of a minor operating a motorized vehicle in violation of this rule

are solely responsible for any damages, claims, losses or actions resulting from that

operation. Violations of this rule will be cause for sanctions against the parent(s),

guardian(s) and/or trainer(s) who are responsible for the child committing the offense.

Penalties may include exclusion of the child, parent(s), guardian(s), and/or trainer(s)

from the competition grounds for the remainder of the competition and charges being

filed against any of the above individuals in accordance with Chapter 6. Wheelchairs

and other mobility assistance devices for individuals with disabilities are exempt from

this rule. (If your competition bans motorized vehicles, please contact our office for

further instruction.)

ENTRIES & ENTERING

1. Mail entries to: PAM TURNER, 584 RIDGE ROAD HORSEHEADS, NY 14845. WE WILL

NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR EMAILED ENTRIES. For your convenience, entries may also

be made on line at: www.horseshowsonline.com.

2. Due to the unprecedented situation affecting our show season this year, the

Buckeye is going to give the exhibitors a one year reprieve from the early post entry

fee. We would be grateful if you would please try to get your entries in to our

secretary by July 12th. Those of you who do will receive 20 raffle tickets for our 50/50

raffle to be held on Thursday at the show. If the Covid-19 situation has made it difficult

for you to get entries in, we understand, and you will have until just before the show,

August 6th to get your entries to Pam Turner. After that, the late fee will only be $25.

Do the best you can to get your entries in, but we are mindful of the uncertainties of

life and business this year. We only ask that you give us a stall count estimate as soon

as possible. If you want special stalls please order through Sandy asap.

3. Due to the necessary scheduling of ride times, dressage entries must be received by

July 27Th. Any dressage entries received after July 27th will not be accepted. No

exceptions.

4. There is no post entry fee for additional classes added for any horses previously

entered.. Added class entries must be made in the horse show office and will be

accepted up to 90 minutes prior to the beginning of the session in which the class is to

be held. Please make your entry plans in advance of this deadline. In the event that the

90 minute deadline is missed, special arrangements can be made to enter your class for

an additional fee of $40 per class. This fee is a necessary consequence because last

minute entering has become a rapidly growing problem for our staff.

5. Transfer of entry fees will be accepted at no penalty prior to the start of the show.

For example, you may substitute a new horse, using the fees of a horse that cannot

come.

6. Prize money checks will be mailed to the owner within 30 days of the show’s closing

date. To avoid delays in receiving prize money, please be certain that the owner’s

complete mailing address is clearly and correctly listed on the entry blank.

7. Trainers who would like to split item costs such as shavings, tack stalls or sponsorships

among their clients must set up these splits at the office by Friday afternoon, NO

EXCEPTIONS.

any age in every division of the show. This award will go to the exhibitor

who accumulates the most points on every horse he or she shows, in

every class, regardless of whether it is a class specified for amateurs or

not. Every class in every division counts, including the sport horse

classes, as well as the performance classes. Amateur exhibitors wishing

to participate must sign up at the show office prior to their first class. A

list of each class you will show in must be provided at the time you sign

Page 12: THE OHIO MORGAN HORSE ASSOCIATION

10

up. Classes not on your list will not count toward your total.

Points will be counted according to the following scale:

1st place-6 points (First place in a one horse class counts 3 points.)

2nd place-5 points, 3rd place-4 points, 4th place-3 points, 5th place-2

points, 6th place- 1 point. The winner of the Amateur High Point Award

will receive a championship ribbon, the Mirror Lake Farm High Point

Amateur Perpetual Trophy, which is an engraved silver tea set. Winners

will be expected to engrave their name and the year on the trophy,

according to the show’s instructions, before returning it prior to the

following year’s show. Trophy may be permanently retained by winning

the award three years in a row. In the unlikely event there is a tie, the

exhibitor who has achieved his or her points with the most first place wins

will be declared the winner. If that still does not break the tie, the judge

will choose the winner.

Carriage Driving High Point Award- Every horse shown in the carriage

driving division will accumulate points in each class according to the

following scale: 1st place-6 points (1st place in a one horse class counts

3 points), 2nd place-5 points, 3rd place-4 points, 4th place-3 points, 5th

place-2 points, 6th place- 1 point. The horse with the most points wins.

tests. The winner for each (Western and Traditional) will be calculated

by averaging each horse’s scores from their top two classes. In the event

of a tie, the horse with the highest individual score will prevail.

Best Performance of the Show Award- At the end of the show, the

judge will select one horse that he believes made the most exceptional

showing of the week. The winner of this very special award will receive

a beautiful, mounted wire horse statue made by artist Danny Williams,

and generously donated by Diane Garrow in honor of the late Tim

O’Gorman. Past winners of this award are:

Here’s how it will work:

Starting first thing Friday morning, everyone will be welcome to bid (near the office) on the

horse they think will win the Calcutta class. You will want to be the highest bidder of the

horse you think will win at the end because the highest bidder of each horse becomes the

recipient of the appropriate (by placing) percentage of the Calcutta jackpot money, which is

all the highest bids from every horse in the class added together. The $5000 added money

will be distributed among the registered owners of each ribbon winning horse, as shown

here:

Prize money total will be $250 for each class, added to the entry fees for each horse. $150 is deducted from the total, with $50 going to fourth, fifth and sixth places. Of the balance, 50% is paid to first place, 30% to second place, and 20% to third place. If there were only 2 entries, the total prize money would be split 60% and 40%. If only 3 entries show, the total prize money the original percentages would apply, without the $300 deduction. In case of only one entry, that entry would receive 100% of the total. Owner and rider must both be a Member of UPHA. Horses must be nominated through UPHA by April 1st. Please see www.uphaonline.com for both forms. If there were only 2 entries, the total prize money would be split 60% and 40%. If only 3 entries show, the total prize money the original percentages would apply, without the $300 deduction. In case of only one entry, that entry would receive 100% of the total.

What is the World Morgan Futurity? The Futurity allows Morgan breeders and owners the privilege

to exhibit quality Morgan progeny at the biggest show in the world. In the past 15 years, over

$3,000,000 has been awarded in prize money to horses in this program.

How do I nominate my horse? Horses are nominated as weanlings. In addition to the nomination fee

for the weanling, the sire must also be nominated. The sire fee need only be paid once annually for

any number of Futurity weanlings nominated that year.

What other fees need to be paid? In April. Eligibility fees are due for yearlings, two and three year

olds. Alumni fees are due at this time too, but are optional.

When can I show my nominated horse? Futurity classes are offered at the Grand National for

yearlings, two and three year olds.

What if I miss the deadline for fees?

Once your horse has been nominated as a weanling, fees can be

caught up with additional late fees. The last time any horse can

be nominated into the futurity is April 1 of its two year old year.

What is the Alumni division? The Alumni division is for four year olds and allows eligible horses to go

another year beyond the Futurity and be shown in any Grand National class, in any division, except

equitation. A horse can participate in the Futurity without being in the Alumni program, but it cannot

participate in the Alumni program without being in the Futurity.

How much money is awarded? Each weanling class initiates a new prize fund, which exists for four

years. The value of the fund will be the total amount of money paid in nomination fees, eligibility fees,

show fees, late fees, miscellaneous funds and added donations, plus residuals from preceding years.

What are “Auction Rewards”? Each year, the Futurity receives a portion of the proceeds from the

AMHA Stallion Service Auction. If a horse’s sire was donated to the auction and wins the futurity class,

the owner of that horse, the stallion owner and the owner of the dam are eligible to receive bonus

money.

How can I win the $10,000 bonus? If the horse is a direct result of a breeding purchased at the SSA, it

will be eligible to compete for the $10,000 Auction Bonus. If the eligible horse wins the futurity class, it

wins the bonus. If more than one eligible horse wins their class, the bonus is split evenly. If the bonus

is not won the yearling year, it carries over to the two year old year and if not won that year, it will

carry over to the three year old year.

To enroll your 2020 foal, use the nomination form found on this website:
