Tourism Is an Economic DriverManatee Chamber Shares the History of Tourism and Manatee County Celebrates Another Record-Setting Year
Just a few weeks ago the Chamber proudly received a temporary installation of the Manatee County Public Library's "Marvelous Manatee" exhibit featuring historic information and images from tourism in Manatee County. We hope that you will stop by our Bradenton office to see it some time this month. According to the Library, "the Marvelous Manatee exhibit will take visitors through the stages of tourism growth, starting with Anna Maria Island beaches at the turn of the twentieth century, followed by the 1920’s Jazz Age when railroads were expanded to south Florida, which created a demand for new hotels and accommodations. It shows how trailer parks in the 1930s made it more affordable for winter-time visitors to the area and explains the impact of both the Interstate system in the 1970s and the rebuilding of the Skyway Bridge in 1987."
As official Tourist Information Centers, both Chamber offices see thousands of visitors who use us as a resource for what to do, where to go, what to eat, and where to stay. Reba and Carole, who staff our front lobby information desks in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, proudly refer Chamber member businesses and offer a friendly, helpful welcome to people who are new to our area - and the many "regulars" who come season after season. We think it makes a difference when residents and visitors can connect with one of our team members for a "Manatee Chamber of Commerce" greeting and customer service.
Elliott Falcione, the executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, recently shared updated tourism numbers and the news was really good! Manatee County saw an increase in total room nights, number of visitors, visitor spending, and overall economic impact in comparing 2018 and 2019 numbers. Sarasota Bradenton International Airport had a record-setting year, with significant increases in flights, direct routes, and passengers. All of this feeds our local economy, including the share of sales taxes paid by visitors to Manatee County. These, and other important factors, are why the Manatee Chamber urges our State legislators and Governor to fund VISIT Florida so that we do not lose any ground in marketing our state as a destination for visitors.
We want your business cards and brochures in our lobbies! Drop a stack off at either office and we will proudly display them.
REPRESENTATIONCensus date will shape congressional
and state legislative districts along with the number of U.S. House of Representative seats for Florida.
FUNDINGHundreds of billions of dollars are
allocated to federal programs including Head Start, block grants for community health services, school lunches, highway
construction, education, and other programs critical to our community.
POLICY DECISIONSCensus data will be used by
public entities to make decisionsincluding new schools,
healthcare, transportation, and community services.
YOUR BUSINESSData generated will be beneficial to
you and your business when makingworkforce decisions or expanding
your office and services.

The Manatee Chamber of Commerce encourages participation in the 2020 Census - a critical opportunity to provide accurate and complete data that will impact our community for years to come.
The U.S. Constitution requires a count, every 10 years, of every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and 5 U.S. territories. The U.S. has counted its population since 1790 making the 2020 Census the 24th count.
The Census Bureau, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has a mission to serve as the nation’s leading provider of data about people and the economy. The Bureau conducts the U.S. Census along with other surveys providing critical data and statistics on U.S. economics, demographics, housing and workforce.
Beginning March 12, all households will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. It is crucial that every person in a household is reported, especially children. Kids ages 0-4 are the most under reported group yet programs that directly affect them are funded based on census data.
The data produced will directly impact our representation, funding, decisions and your business.
You can help by encouraging participation by your employees and business partners. Widespread education and participation will mean a successful count for Manatee County.
To learn more about the 2020 Census, including FAQs and important dates, visit 2020census.gov.

The year 2020 marks a special year for Port Manatee as it celebrates half a century of operation. The creation of the port goes back to 1965, when Manatee County bought 357 acres to launch a Barge and Industrial Port which was eventually named Port Manatee. That same year, the Florida Legislature created the Manatee County Port Authority. Even before its official dedication ceremony in October 1970, Port Manatee welcomed its first vessel call, with 2,000 tons of Korean plywood being offloaded from the M/V Fermland, on Aug. 7, 1970. Since then, the port has continually built its position as a gateway for international trade while setting remarkable records of growth.
Today, Port Manatee is one of Florida’s largest and fastest growing deepwater seaports, handling a variety of bulk, breakbulk, containerized and heavylift project cargos.
Located at the entrance to Tampa Bay, in northern Manatee County, Port Manatee moves more than 10 million tons of cargo each year including fresh produce, forestry products, citrus juices, fertilizer, steel, aluminum, cement, aggregates and project cargo.
Port Manatee annually sees nearly 48 million pineapples, 35 million avocados and more than one billion bananas move across the docks and imports 125 million gallons of fruit juices.
Port Manatee also is playing a key role in fueling Southwest Florida’s economy, serving as the gateway for about 470 million gallons of gasoline delivered to gas stations in more than eleven counties in Southwest Florida.
With modern cargo handling facilities, state-of-the-art warehousing for bulk, break-bulk and refrigerated cargoes, ten deep water berths, convenient connectivity to the CSX mainline and direct uncongested access to the interstate, Port Manatee has plenty to offer current and potential customers.
Port Manatee also is home to the International Trade Hub. Founded in 2014, the hub serves as an incubator for global commerce and technological innovation and provides expert advice and support in assisting firms with production, distribution and related activities. At the hub, international, regional and local start-ups and entrepreneurs wishing to establish future business in Manatee County, have access to the tools and expertise they need to succeed.
Port Manatee is one of Manatee County’s leading economic engines, continuously focused on development of commerce and creation of jobs. With more than 5,000 acres of developable land just outside the port’s gates, big businesses are increasingly being drawn to this area, creating hundreds of new jobs in maritime and related industrial sectors. The port generates more than $2.3 billion in annual economic impact, while supporting more than 24,000 direct and indirect jobs without property tax support. Visit www.portmanatee.com or follow us on Facebook to learn more and find out why Port Manatee is the right turn on Tampa Bay.

Generation Z: The New Future ofYour Business and CommunityHeadliners Recap
Amy Farrington, Christy Cardillo, and Dr. Richard Barnhouse.
Gen Z, born between 1995 and 2012, is the most diverse generation in our history and their work ethic, communications style and expectations will impact our business and local community.
In February, the Manatee Chamber welcomed Dr. Rich Barnhouse, Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management at State College of Florida, to share his research and insight about Gen Z with our members. This “we” generation has a strong work ethic, is extremely career-focused and concerned about the wellbeing of others with a preference for face-to-face interaction. Members received advice on what to expect from Gen Z, how this generation will shape the workforce, and what the future may hold.

THINK LOCAL. THINK CHAMBER.
Make an Impact on Tomorrow’s Workforce TodayConnecting Business Leaders with Students
The Manatee Chamber has a long-standing relationship with the School District of Manatee County. Through this partnership, the Chamber fields several requests each year for business professionals to participate in career fairs, speaking engagements in the classroom, and more.
It’s important for students in Manatee County to learn about the vast job opportunities available in our growing community. According to the 2020 State of Students Report prepared by CareerSource Suncoast, 76% of students surveyed identify anxiety/depression as an emotion felt when thinking about their plans after high school. Together, we can help students explore various options available to them.
These opportunities are in addition to the programs the Chamber offers in the schools, such as Project TEACH for fourth-grade students and Big Bank Theory for high school seniors.
If your company would like to be contacted when requests come in, please contact Terri at [email protected] or 941-748-4842, ext. 172.

A Night of Celebration The Chamber’s Annual Dinner is an opportunity to bring members together to celebrate accomplishments, catch up with our best business friends, and honor the legacy of our beloved Bob Bartz through the Annual Bartz Award.
Outgoing Chairman, Bill Poulton, an executive with Tropicana Products, was honored for his leadership during a year where the Chamber accomplished so much to support local businesses, grow our economy, and contribute to our great quality of life.
Ernie Withers, General Manager for Mercedes-Benz of Sarasota, was installed as the 2020 Chamber Chairman. Ernie was unable to attend the Dinner as he was in Texas where he and his Mercedes team were honored with the JD Power Excellence Dealer Award. In a pre-filmed video, Ernie shared some of the Chamber programs and priorities for which he is most proud and offered highlights on what to expect under his leadership in 2020.
Bob Turner, former Publisher for the Bradenton Herald, was honored with the 3rd Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership. Susie Bowie, Executive Director of the Manatee Community Foundation, presented Bob with his award by saying “Before Bob retired in 2017 as President & Publisher of the Bradenton Herald, he had made more friends, supported more community endeavors, and spent more time as a well-respected volunteer leader than it seemed possible time could allow.” Bob is fiercely proud of Manatee County and his dedication to leadership in Bradenton and beyond continue both behind the scenes and in recognized positions.
Bill Poulton presented the Chairman’s Award to the City of Bradenton for its tremendous vision and partnership with the Manatee Chamber. Mayor Poston, City Councilmen, and Carl Callahan made possible a partnership that would include the Manatee Chamber's incredible new space in the City’s mixed use parking garage that positions us to serve our members and our community for decades to come.
More than 550 business and community leaders were in attendance to celebrate the Chamber’s 130-year history of building a positive business environment while enhancing the community’s quality of life. It is because of the investment of our more than 2,000 members that we are able to continue this mission, and we thank each and every one of you.

FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP
2020 Award HonoreeBOB TURNER
Bob Turner is described by friends and colleagues as a leader who has a deep commitment to and love of Manatee County. Bob was President and Publisher of the Bradenton Herald from 2008 until his retirement in 2017 - his tenure at the Herald began in 1979 and his newspaper career spanned more than 40 years.
Bob is a past chairman of the Manatee Chamber and through his leadership at the Bradenton Herald, the newspaper supported hundreds of non-profits and community initiatives. His personal involvement included board service and leadership roles with the Economic Development Council, South Manatee Rotary, University of South Florida, The Foundation for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County, Manatee Education Foundation, and others. In retirement, Bob is continuing to give back through serving on the board of the Manatee Community Foundation and supports his wife Dottie’s leadership with the PACE Center for Girls.
“The Bob Bartz Award is a great honor for me and it helps to perpetuate the memory of one of Manatee County’s very best.
Bob was an example of great citizenship. He cared deeply about his community and was a good steward of the assets we all enjoy,” Bob Turner stated in considering this honor. “I hope we can all follow his example of listening to each other and finding common ground and the best decisions for all.”
Congratulations to Bob Turner on receiving the 3rd Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership!

business after hoursStarting the year off at the DJ Swamp was the best idea the Manatee Chamber leadership could ever have! The networking was a huge success as we all worked together to support our local business community. Pledging the “Stay Local Pledge” was a hit!
The food was soulfully delicious with chicken and waffles and cheeseburger bites along with fresh catered tasty treats. Always a great time being Manatee Strong at the DJ Swamp as Willis Smith Construction hosted the fantastic networking social. Nathan Carr, Vice President of Willis Smith Construction, kicked off the event with a few words of inspiration. He shared the definition of what the Manatee Chamber of Commerce means to the success of each local business and what keeping it local means to Willis Smith Construction. The entire team from Willis Smith Construction appreciates each of you and looks forward to the next event as we welcome you back to the DJ Swamp in 2021.

ManateeChamber.comMember Testimonial
Apple Spice has been a Chamber member since July 2018. In this short time we have met a lot of local businesses in
the Bradenton area. The support of the Chamber and the members has been very beneficial and instrumental to the growth of our company. We are active in chamber
meetings and are still connecting with new business owners every month.
Thank you Manatee Chamber!
