AUGUST 4/5
Goodbye and thank you from summer seminari-an Jeremy Lopez
I am immensely grateful to all of you here at St. Thomas More.
Thank you all so much for your love, prayers, support and hospi-tality towards me these past eight weeks that I have been here. I have felt extremely welcomed and inspired by so many of you. It is truly a blessing to see all of the great things that are taking place in the parish and to see so many of you wonderful people trying to live out your lives as disciples for Christ. Continue to run towards holiness and bringing others into this amazing community! There is so many great things happen-ing and I am excited for you. Know that you all are in my pray-ers. Please continue to keep my-self and my other seminarian brothers in your prayers as we discern if the Lord is calling us to priesthood!

L Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court of
St. Francis of Assisi #1915 Who We Are! What We Do! Why Join!
WE ARE the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Francis of Assisi #1915, one of 99 local courts in the state of Louisi-ana. Our number, 1915, refers to the fact that we were the 1,915th Catholic Daughter court established in the United States. We were instituted on February 2, 1964, making us 54 years old. WE DO works of charity and service through the Circle of Love program. The seven points of the Circle of Love program are Fam-ily, Quality of Life, Youth, Education, Legislation, Leadership, and Spiritual Enhancement. These points are meant to help us, as Catholic Daughters, meet the needs of the Church and the commu-nity. We collect items for the Louisiana Veterans Home, Bishop Ott Shelter for Homeless Men, and Metanoia Manor. Twice a year, we provide a hot, home cooked meal for the residents housed at the Bishop Ott Shelter. We also give our time and monetary support to Catholic Charities, Covenant House, SOAR, Habitat for Human-ity, and more. We do bulk rate mailings for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We’ve established a “Mary’s Rosary Circle” where our members make rosaries for active military personnel stationed overseas, foreign missions, school children, and hospital and nurs-ing home patients. Members of our court visit the Guest House Nursing Home to assist the residents who wish to attend Mass or Communion Services. We support the right to life. WE HAVE FUN by taking trips, going out to eat, having pot-luck suppers, and attending social functions. For extra love and laughter in your life, Catholic Daughters is for you! We enjoy the fellowship of other Catholic women who love and want to serve the Lord. We have a membership that is young and not so young; sin-gle and married; widowed and divorced. YOU WILL FIT IN! BECAUSE Catholic Daughters is such a wonderful and caring organization, a member receives much more than she gives. The rewards from belonging to CDA are great. Even if a person cannot attend every meeting or participate in every event, she is still a valued member because her prayers and her dues help support the welfare of our court. Court St. Francis of Assisi #1915 meets the second Monday of every month (with the exception of July and December) at 6:30pm at the Mother Teresa Room at St. Thomas More. For more infor-mation, please call Regent Patricia Schmit 225-272-2847 or email [email protected]
Blessing of backpacks As the new school year approach-es, many families are beginning their school supply shopping including new backpacks or school bags that hopefully will last the full school year. This year St. Thomas More Church will have a special blessing of the backpacks to be held during all Masses the weekend of Aug. 11 and 12. All students – preschool through college – are encouraged to bring their empty backpacks/book bags with them to Mass that weekend to have them blessed by the priest. A special tag that can be attached to the bag will be given out after the blessing. Please join us to celebrate all our students who are beginning a new year of learning. The blessing is held in conjunction with the Women’s Ministry back to school breakfast fundraiser—see Page 6.
WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of "liturgical detour." We have been listening to Saint Mark's Gos-pel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John's Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplica-tion of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord's statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the "bread of life." Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements--bread and wine--into the Lord's Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing.
