Self-defense is a Funda-mental Human Right. Understanding what that entails is quite another matter. How does one keep themselves and their loved ones safe in every-day life? What constitutes a threat? How do you rec-ognize the danger in time to react? What are the essential techniques nec-essary to thwart aggres-sive behavior? Are there physical and non physi-cal methods that can be

learned without the need to be an expert in Martial Arts? Are there age or gender distinctions? How can I overcome my own doubts and inhibitions? Sudden attacks with no warning are relatively rare, but can occur when one least expects it.Much more common are confrontations that escalate into violent situations. In both cases, surprise is a major factor for the average person. In the fi rst case, it can be

Self-defense class to be offeredpsychologically diffi cult to get into a fi ghting mind set especially if you have been hit or are injured. In the second case, it can be very intimidating to deal with any aggressive act or actual attack in a controlled and decisive manner. What aggressive people really want is a victim! Good Self-Defense train-ing teaches you how not to be so vulnerable. To this end, I am offer-ing a three-hour workshop that will concentrate on a small number of highly fl exible skills that will enable you to answer the questions I posed earlier in this article. This one-on-one, focused workshop will allow for only 10 students on a fi rst come, fi rst serve basis. The date is Sunday, Nov. 13, and the time is from noon to 3 p.m. Location is at the Aikido Academy in Catalina. The cost is $60. Call 825-8500 to reserve a spot. By John Hernandez The SaddleBrooke Coalition Against Domestic Violence is presenting the SaddleBrooke All-Stars concert at the Desert View Performing Arts Center on Nov. 5. Proceeds from the concert will go to supporting the Safe Journey House in San Manuel. The performers are donating their time and talent to assist the Safe Journey House in providing advocacy and intervention services to abused women and children in Eastern Pinal County. The show will feature many of the well known entertainers from SaddleBrooke such as vocalist Ron Aeschliman, the classically trained voice of Monica Gray singing pop and classical music, and Ted Robus with his great delivery of pop music. Patsy Chase’s Desert Stars will be delivering their finely choreographed clogging routines and Linda Griffin

will be performing with her wonderful voice and piano playing. Not only will SaddleBrooke’s favorites be there but some incredible new talent will be performing at the concert. Jim Merker and his Barbershop Quartet will be harmonizing old favorites. Classical and Broadway songs will be performed by Gail Nellis. Pianists Joanne Thomas and Carol Whitney will be playing duets and making their keyboards sing. Hector and Lidia Legrand will be performing the Argentine classical and sensual tango routines. Former Sapphires star Earlene Lewis will play guitar and sing “uppity” jazz and will accompany Madeleine Fiorino in a beautiful rendition of La Vie En Rose and Terry Irwin will be playing country and western favorites for the audience. It should be a magical evening for those in attendance. There will be two

Oracle’s Holiday Gift and Art Market, featuring original works exclusively by Oracle artists and artisans, will open on Friday, Nov. 25, and run for extended weekends through Dec. 23. The one-stop location is an indoor gift and gallery space at 1995 West American Avenue in Oracle. The annual event, formerly called Art on American Avenue, is set for the post-Thanksgiving weekend and every Thursday, Friday,

Saturday and Sunday in December before closing the day before Christmas Eve. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. “Browsers and buyers will find unique, affordably-priced gift items and small art work pieces, with many being shown for the first time,” said Judy Walsh, chairperson. Tim Humphrey is known in the community for his beautiful work on sandstone. It is like no other art to be found. “All the images are hand-drawn, etched and then burned,” he explained. “There is no paint used.”

Cobre Valley Art and Wine His inspiration came from a perfect butterfly imprinted on a piece of cut sandstone. “A million more stones could be cut and the chances of finding another image would be impossible,” he said. It took Tim more than a year and a half to develop the process of burning images onto the sandstone. Tim runs a full-time business, Dream Pole Construction, but a rare and admirable trait of the art Tim creates is that it is all done for charity. He finds joy in helping others through his unique talent. “If it became a business it would become stressful. I enjoy creating pieces that will help organizations with their fundraising

efforts,” Tim said. His passion and commitment to this cause is evident in the time he takes to pick the perfect stone, to know the qualities of the stone, and to position the wildlife image. “In the end, I have no control over how it comes out. By Skylar Khan The Divine Sister by playwright Charles Busch will have its Oracle debut at Spats Theater on Nov. 4, 2011 according to producer Rose Milam. She invites us to be entertained and laugh a lot by a great cast of our favorite actors/actresses: Imo Baird, Michelle Egan, Dee Hansen, Mary Ellen Kazda, Christine Oberth and Julie Szekely. Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19. And two o’clock matinées will take place Sundays, Nov. 6 and 13. Rose Milam, the show’s producer, calls herself a “deer in headlights.” She will do everything associated with the production of a show, as long as she does not have to act in it. For the last 15 years, Milam has worn multiple hats during Spats’ productions, including reservation manager, house manager, ticket manager, stage manager and prompter. The only assignments left for other talents include: acting, directing, hair and makeup and technical aspects. Prior to her successful association with Spats, Milam has worked at the Sheraton El Conquistador Resort since its inception. She deliberately set out to learn the various aspects of running a hotel, including being a life guard, head cashier, handling Accounts Receivables and working in housekeeping. Although well versed in the different fields associated with the hospitality business, she nevertheless decided that 17 years were enough, when she retired and went into business for herself. She took away from her job what would continue to be a constant in her life: the love of meeting and interacting

Jim Cowlin teaches basic digital photography in Oracle through CAC Community Education

17, from 5-8 p.m. and costs $25. During the class, which is designed for community enrichment, students will study the basics of digital photography, including tips for lighting and composition. Students will be asked to bring their cameras and instruction booklets to class. Cowlin is a freelance photographer based in Oracle, specializing in nature, travel and fine art. For more 30 years he has been documenting the landscape of the Western United States and

has built a collection of images that range from broad panoramic views to intimate close-ups. Cowlin’s photographs can be licensed for use in travel and nature magazines, websites and promotional materials. He provides detailed captions facilitating their use in science textbooks. He also specializes in the production of fine art prints for use in corporate offices, hotels and healthcare facilities. Using high resolution scans of film-based images or digital captures, he

makes beautifully detailed, archival prints in almost any size. Cowlin’s current work in progress is documenting US Route 89 between Canada and Mexico. As told by John and Karen Cesar Can you imagine turning 100 years old? How would you celebrate? Surely celebrating such a milestone would merit special honors and obser-vances, and Tucson has been doing so for several months. One can’t help but notice all the historical references and anecdotes which have ap-peared daily in our newspa-pers, as well as various venues and shows which have served to highlight our uniqueness, landmark events, and contri-butions. The 2012 Tucson

Gem & Mineral Show™ will be no exception to marking this significant event. Each year the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society prepares a special poster, generally featuring a unique mineral specimen, for the show at the Tucson Convention Center. In honor of Arizona’s Centen-nial, this year the show theme is the Minerals of Arizona. This year’s “poster mineral” is particularly appropriate in that it was found at the Old Yuma Mine in the Tucson Mountains by Tucson residents who are also members of the Tucson

And just like the centenarian Ari-zona, those residents can look back at their find as if it hap-pened yesterday. The late sixties were a won-derful time for Nehru suits, hippies, the Beatles – and mineral collectors! Most of the classic sites were still open and accessible – the Red Cloud, the Total Wreck and the Old Yuma – and friends could enjoy the fun of collect-ing together In late September of 1968, our friends Gene and Jackie Schlepp asked my wife Karen and I to go collecting with them. As Karen was about two weeks from delivering our first child, she was restricted by her doctor from collecting in an underground mine. An understandable restriction, considering the difficulty in getting her out if she went into labor underground. Therefore, the Old Yuma Mine was a perfect choice since it was located in the Tuc-son Mountains about 8 miles from Tucson – both a surface

collecting site as well as one close to home. We were also able to drive straight up to the mine, and the owner, Susie Davis (who had a particular fondness for Karen) had given us carte blanche permission to collect there. Our expectations for find-ing anything were low, not just because the area had been pretty well picked over already, but because Gene and I had been there the previous weekend to collect vanadi-nite. Until the discovery of world-class vanadinites from Morocco, the Old Yuma and the Apache Mines were the primary sources of these specimens. Therefore, you can imagine our surprise and excitement when we arrived at the Old Yuma to see that the ceiling over the “glory hole” had fall-en, leaving large slabs, weigh-ing many tons, lying on the floor like giant crooked tile. Jackie was the first to discover a pocket containing wulfenite (our “poster mineral). When Karen and I arrived she and Gene were already examining a large mass of intergrown wulfenite crystals at the top of one of the slabs. After a brief discussion and a review of the surrounding, Karen and I worked our way down to the bottom of the slabs to see the extent of the find, where a water course and a pocket containing wulfenite were visible. Those of you who are col-lectors are familiar with both the excitement of such a find and the daunting challenge of getting to it in such tight sur-roundings without disturbing or damaging anything – defi-nitely not an endeavor for a claustrophobic! We spied a group of large crystals – in-cluding the “Poster Wulfenite” – still firmly attached to one of the slabs in an almost inac-cessible location in a narrow gap between the fallen slabs. Also wedged firmly between two boulders near the bot-tom was a small slab literally covered with druzy-coated wulfenite. What we wouldn’t have given to extract some of these, but the tools we had available were unfortunately inadequate, so most of these fragile crystals were lost.

Unprepared for such a large find, we found it necessary to race over to the old Cortaro Road Post Office and store to get what we needed – beer flats and additional toilet pa-per for wrapping – so that the men could dig out the crystals and the women would start wrapping. The poster mineral was firmly attached to the hard matrix. Gene dangled upside-down trying to free it with a hammer and chisel, while I worked from the bottom up, wedged between two slabs and stretching to catch the crystal when it was freed. We must have made quite a sight, and the dialogue between us would have been great mate-rial for a skit. By Sunday evening we had retrieved the majority of the specimens, but then had to go to our respective jobs the next morning – exhausted, late (not good for rapport with our bosses), but still reeling from our good fortune. Un-fortunately our euphoria was unexpectedly broken. When we returned Monday evening, imagine our surprise to hear voices and see lights moving in the darkness. To our amazement, when we peered into the glory hole there was a group of collectors from Phoenix pounding away. We left wondering what there was left to collect, if anything. Because all of us worked together, dividing the miner-als fairly was a challenge. In the end it was decided that none of the minerals would be kept and that the find would be sold as a lot rather than as individual pieces. Gene recommended taking several specimens to George and Dick Bideaux, who had a mineral business in downtown Tucson at that time. They were very impressed with the color and quality of the speci-mens and made an offer. But in the end, we couldn’t bear to see the specimens sold, espe-cially after George and Dick had raved about their quality. My wife and I had to borrow what amounted to a little over two month’s salary and bought out our friends’ half. We often wondered if the money from that find was part of the seed money which made it possible

for Gene and Jackie to real-ize their dream of becoming full-time mineral dealers and open Western Minerals. We hope so. Meanwhile, the owner of the mine – Susie Davis – had heard about the specimens. Being the lady of class that she was, she only asked for the right of first refusal if we ever decided to sell. Some of the specimens were later donated or traded to the Arizona Sono-ra Desert Museum, but we still have the best of them. Many years later after Susie’s death, Dick Bideaux located and filed a new mineral claim at the Old Yuma and ultimately formed a company to mine crystals. The Old Yuma was eventually bought out by the US govern-ment and is no longer open to any mineral collecting. We collected an amazing array of crystals. One piece of the wulfenite was covered with mountain leather, and some had a dusting of spar-kling druzy quartz (and/or possibly cerussite since the covering has not been ana-lyzed). Much of the wulfenite had a base of tiny vanadinite crystals which were attached it to the matrix. Complex crys-tals which appeared to have been broken and re-healed were also found, in addition to individual floaters (crystals that had no point of attach-ment to any matrix), and some complex miniatures. According to Dick Jones, in The Mineralogical Record, Arizona –IV, March-April 1983, the poster specimen is “...probably the best group ever collected at the mine, and among the finest wulfenite specimens in the world.” Not a bad feather-in-the-cap for two young couples out collecting on a Saturday in September.
