Orpheus Choir of Toronto P.O. Box 662, Stn F, Toronto ON M4Y 2N6 www.orpheuschoirtoronto.com | [email protected] | 416.530.4428 December 7, 2017 - For Immediate Release: THE NORDIC LIGHT FESTIVAL Choral Encounters with Ēriks Ešenvalds Ēriks Ešenvalds (b.1977), the renowned Latvian choral composer, comes to Toronto under the auspices of the Orpheus Choir of Toronto for an exclusive and exhilarating festival of his incomparable music. Ešenvalds has gained increasing international recognition for his complex, multilayered choral compositions, sometimes in eight or even 16 parts, “often overwhelming in their rich, tonal colour and bursting with imagination”. For ten days, Ešenvalds will engage with singers and conductors in Toronto (February 21-24), Kitchener-Waterloo (February 26), Montreal (February 27) and Ottawa (February 28), presenting his innovative works replete with “extravagant dissonances, expansive textures, generous employment of voicings, and sheer audaciousness in dramatic realization.” The Nordic Light Gala Concert at Metropolitan United Church in Toronto on Saturday, February 24 at 7:30 pm will feature the Orpheus Choir of Toronto and That Choir, in a concert dedicated entirely to the music of Ēriks Ešenvalds, conducted by Robert Cooper, Craig Pike and the composer himself. The performance centrepiece will be the Canadian premiere of Nordic Light, Ešenvalds’ spectacular multimedia symphonic representation of the aurora borealis. When Ēriks Ešenvalds was in a meadow in far northern Norway six years ago, he saw, as many people do at 69 degrees latitude, the northern lights. The flickering green display lasted until dawn while he gazed upwards, made snow angels and took thousands of photos. Ešenvalds was so inspired, he spent the next three years transforming these images into music and a ground-breaking multimedia work for two choirs, orchestra, natural sounds, videos of Arctic storytellers and projections of the lights themselves. Presented in partnership with The Adlers Agency, the Orpheus Choir and That Choir will showcase many of Ešenvalds’ most successful scores along with the Nordic Light Symphony in this unique choral encounter. This special event is one of many happening around the world in celebration of Latvia’s centenary in 2018. Musica Baltica, the major publisher of over 60 contemporary composers from the Baltic States, is a leading sponsor of these events and will be on tour with Ēriks Ešenvalds to promote and sell sheet music and CDs of their artists.
