October is a very busy month for golf members here at Grand Haven. With the playing of our
annual Member/Members events and the Men’s Invitational, there is quite a buzz in the air. Who
will be pairing up as partners, how will handicap’s affect the scoring, how will the course play, which
twosome is better at which format; lots of things to consider and prepare for on these exciting
annual events. If you haven’t signed up yet, there is still time. Whether you participate for the joy of
competition or the fun of camaraderie; just sign up! If you don’t have a partner or don’t know who to
ask -please stop by the golf shop and we will be happy to help you get matched up.
October is a busy golf month no matter what level golfer you consider yourself. The biannual
President’s Cup will be contested October 8th to 11th at Jack Nicklaus Golf Course Korea. Imagine
being one of the team members preparing for that event! US Captain Jay Haas has a big job on his
hands to decide which players to pair against a formidable International Team. Check out the Web
site www.presidentscup.com to learn more about the players, format, history, television schedule
and some great pictures of Jack’s course with Incheon City, South Korea in the background.
There’s lots of fun on tap for our non-golfers as well this month. Join us for Pub Night Wednesday
October 7th featuring Grand Haven’s edition of Family Feud. My Way Dinner Club has a great
evening planned on Sunday October 11th including a live band, dinner and dancing. If your idea of
dressing up doesn’t include a jacket and tie unless it’s part of your costume; join us for Halloween
fun Saturday the 31st. Costume contest, DJ, dancing and delicious treats will make us all feel like
kids again! Look for details on these events and more through out this months newsletter. Gather
your friends and make your reservations early.
You don’t have to be a golfer to dress like one! We are beginning to receive our fall stock and
there are some great colors and fashions to help you make a statement on and off the course. If
you have been holding on to Gift Cards or accumulating funds in your credit book, come by the golf
shop and let us help you find your inner fashionista. We also have some great new golf equipment
products that may be just what you need to help improve your game. Adidas has a new men’s golf
shoe that has outstanding comfort featuring their Boost cell technology or try their new Daddy Long
Legs putter with counter balancing weights. With the advance technology available from head to toe;
we’ll all need to be looking for some new excuses!
Now get out there and play!
The month of September was a busy
month for the Golf Course Maintenance
team. Our last aggressive greens verticut took
place on the 21st. Verticutting will now become
less frequent and not as deep. That same day we
applied a bulk fertilizer to the whole course. The
fertilizer was high in Potassium in order to aid in
strengthening the plant going into the colder
months. September was also the wettest month
so far in 2015. As I am writing this newsletter,
almost 9 inches of rain has fallen, with more rain
forecasted for the last few days of the month. We
did have one Cart Path Only day (first in
2015). As you all know, Grand Haven drains ex-
tremely well. We are one of the few courses in
this part of Florida that has been able to mow
during this wet period.
As we progress in to the Fall/Winter
there are a few practices, as golfers, that I would
like you to put an emphasis on. These practices
should be routine and done all the time, but come
to the forefront in cold temperatures. The first
practice is ball mark repair and sanding divots. I
have attached a picture of the proper way to fix a
ball mark. During the cooler months, the turf
slows down. This means that recovery is almost
non-existent. I have also attached a picture of the
proper divot pattern when hitting range
balls. Properly fixing ball marks and filling divots
will insure smooth playing conditions throughout
the season. The second prac-
tice is traffic control. Over the
next few months you will notice
many more ropes and
stakes. Last year 99.9% of our ropes were cut…
by an anonymous member. We do not put the
ropes out for our benefit. They are actually a hin-
drance to us, but are good for the golf course.
Please follow our traffic patterns. Stay on the
path near tees and greens. Our turf coverage has
come a long way this summer. It is our goal to
protect it, as much as possible, throughout the
year.
October is the start of tournament season at
Grand Haven. We are excited to prepare for the
Men’s and Ladies Member/Member, as well as
present the course in the best possible condition
for all of the guest’s during the Men’s Invita-
tional. Leading up to the tournaments we will be
overseeding Par 3 tees, the driving range tees,
and the clubhouse grounds. We will also be ap-
plying our first Winter pre-emergent herbicide
application. As turf growths slows, we can focus
our attention to line of sight issues. If there is an
area that you feel needs attention or if you have a
general question/comment, contact me at

Equitable Stroke Control. This is what you use when posting your score for handicap purposes. All
scores for handicap purposes including tournament scores are subject to the application of Equitable
Stroke Control. ESC is used when a player’s actual or most likely score exceeds a maximum number,
based on the table below, for the players Course Handicap from the tees played. This is only for post-
ing your score in the handicap system. Your ESC “number” is based solely by your handicap not your
handicap index. First, know your handicap and find it in the chart below. If your score exceeds the cor-
relating number bring the score down to the correct number. If you don’t finish a hole you must post
what your most likely score would have been. You must do this procedure on every hole.

Attention Grand Haven Golfers, “And All The Ships At Sea”:
It has been an exciting month for the MGA, starting on September 1st, when the league had the 3rd
Quarter Shootout of the top ten scoring golfers in the MGA. Each week, as the MGA plays their regular
games, points are awarded to members scoring in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in their respective flights that
compete in the game of the week. An individual earning 1st place receives 10 points, while a 2nd place
finish earns 9 points, and so on. At the end of the quarter the top ten finishing in this leaderboard are
allowed to participate in the “Shootout”, which is a phenomenal golf match, at that. Imagine ten
golfers playing on the tenth hole together, and through a process of elimination, we play to the
eighteenth hole to crown a winner.
This year, the following ten players competed for the coveted trophy of the “fickle finger of fate” and a
hefty cash prize: John Douglas, Steve Tosh, Jack Hinsch, Art Canino, Steve Schile, Earl Buchanan, Bob
Mehl, Roland Robichaud, Hawley Rogers and Gary McDougall. We are proud to announce the winner
of the 3rd Quarter Shootout, Mr. Jack Hinsch, who played an outstanding round of golf, as did the
other contestants that day.
Golf Humor: Brand new golf balls are attracted to water, and the power of the attraction is in direct
proportion to how much the balls cost.
A new seasonal shootout period has begun, and MGA members are playing some competitive
matches scoring points to be in the next Shootout in January.
Until next month, “see you from the bunker”.

Hawley Rogers eagled the par 4 sixth hole during the Monday September 14th, 2015 using a pitching
wedge. ! Hawley’s shot was witnessed by Lee Figliuolo and Art Canino. This was his second eagle on
the 6th hole.
Dr. Ronald Pickett scored a hole in one at the 8th hole September 29th using a pitching wedge. Dr.
Pickett was playing from the 95 yard white tee markers. His ace was witnessed by Rick Ward, John
Yozzo and Bill Holland.
In my Hand I Hold A Ball,
White And Dimpled, Rather Small.
Oh, How Bland It Does Appear,
This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.
By Its Size I Could Not Guess,
The Awesome Strength It Does Pos-
sesses
But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,
I've Wandered Through The Fires Of
Hell.
My Life Has Not Been Quite The
Same,
Since I Chose To Play This Game.
It Rules My Mind For Hours On End,
A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.
It Has Made Me Yell, Curse and Cry.
I Hate Myself And Want To Die.
It Promises A Thing Called Par,
If I Can Hit It straight And Far.
To Master Such A Tiny Ball,
Should Not Be Very Hard At All.
But My Desires The Ball Refuses,
And Does Exactly As It Chooses.
It Hooks and Slices, Dribbles and
Dies,
And Even Disappears Before My
Eyes.
Often It Will Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.
With Miles Of Grass On Which To
Land,
It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It Would Find The Hole.
It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,
And Swear That I Will Give It Up.
And Take To Drink To Ease My Sor-
row,
But The Ball Knows .... I'll Be Back
Tomorrow.

October has arrived and the cooler breezes are a welcome feeling out on the golf course, for several
reasons, this is my favorite month of the year!
Our Opening Day was September 15, we had a great turn out and Chef prepared a delicious Luncheon
with recipes used from the Grand Haven Cookbook. Committee reports were all given and everything is
in good shape for the coming year. The list of Directors and committee chairs is posted in the Locker
Room for your information if you have any questions. Sandy distributed the new Membership Book,
more are available from Sandy or at the Golf Shop. We have 80 members with our Tuesday golf par-
ticipation increasing each week, as more members come home after spending the summer up north.
The Women's Member-Member Tournament is just around the corner on October 16th and 17th, so if
you haven't gotten a partner yet, now is the time! Registration forms are available at the club. The 4-
Ball Tournament is now set and flights will soon be posted in the Locker Room. Stableford Teams will
be announced next week, so we will all know what our team color is for this season. I don't know what
colors Patty and Jackie have decided to use, but I know I always look forward to seeing the teams all
dressed alike on Stableford Day. It makes for an enjoyable day of golf.
Happy Halloween Month!!

Our LGLGH 9 holers are back to our new season. Mother Nature rained us out of our opener, but we
still had delicious lunch and kicked-off the 2015-2016 season. We were able to play our scramble
the following week, thanks to Billy ,Andrea and our opening Chairperson, Roe Bianchi.
The nine holers are starting to play games, each 1st and 3rd Thursday's of the month, with cash
awards. Something new to our league.
