President’s Message

This past month of November was extremely busy for the Heathrow Women's Club!!

The Ways & Means Committee headed by Ginny Castellani and Made-lyn Faillaci, kicked off our fundraising efforts with our Second Annual Community Yard Sale. We raised over $3,300.00!! Thank you to all

who participated...your work and volunteerism will not go unnoticed as our chosen chari-ties will benefit greatly!

Our monthly luncheon and general meeting, which is held at the Heathrow Country Club each month, was a great hit! Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida State Highway Patrol gave another fascinating detailed account of what can happen due to distractions while driving on our roadways.

Many women enjoyed the first "Ladies Nite Out" sponsored by the Social Committee. This fun event was held at the Cork & Olive Wine Shop in Lake Mary. We hope to continue these fun evenings for all. Thank you to Rachael Guernsey and Toni Zufelt for hosting this event.

December is already proving to be just as busy as last month! At our December 10th Luncheon and Meeting we will be treated to beautiful show tunes and holiday music per-formed by Michael and Ben Kramer. After lunch we will hold our Annual Bake Sale fund-raiser . Start your baking early, bring your home baked goodies and get ready to buy! For those who no longer bake, monetary donations are also welcomed. Many thanks to Sandy Schutt and Rosemary Robinson for organizing this event.

Thank you to Linda Wright and Lynn Edwards for organizing the Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Please be sure to bring your unwrapped gift or gift card to the December luncheon. Many children will have a much brighter holiday season thanks to you.

The Annual Holiday Tea is coming up on Thursday, December 19th. This year it will be held once again at the Garden Gate Tea Room in Mt. Dora. Be sure to sign up early ~ seating is limited.

The year 2013 may be drawing to an end, however our Ways & Mean Committee is just beginning to gear up for our future fundraisers. In January, the Heathrow Women's Club Charities, Inc. and the Oakmonte Village Senior Care are partnering a "Healthy Living Expo". This event will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 from 11 am to 3 pm at the Oakmonte Village. Approximately 40 vendors will have 'stations' where they can demonstrate what their businesses have to offer in the way of helping people live better and healthier. All proceeds from the vendors will go directly to our charities. This event is open and free to everyone so please bring your friends and family.

The committee is also putting together all the fine details for our annual fundraising bene-fit. This year’s benefit, "Starry, Starry Night" will be held at the Lake Mary Marriott on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Please mark your calendars! We have many volunteer op-portunities available, and if you have a little time over the next couple of months, we could certainly use your help! "Many hands make light work"!! If interested, please contact either Madelyn Faillaci or Ginny Castellani. This is a great way to get involved and help to raise much needed funds for our deserving charities.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all who have helped out so willingly to make 2013 a fabulous year for the Heathrow Women's Club. Thank you so much and let's make 2014 and even greater year! I would like to especially thank Karen Watson for the wonderful relationship she has with our Platinum Sponsor, GEICO. Our charities will ben-efit greatly from the $3,500.00 that they have once again donated to our charities.

This is such a joyous time of year, please accept my warmest wishes for a safe, healthy and peaceful holiday season!

Kindest regards,

Martha

Wishing you a Blessed Thanksgiving!!!

I am thankful:

For the teenager who is not doing dishes but is watching TV, Because that means he is at home and not on the streets.

For the taxes that I pay, Because it means that I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party, Because it means that I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug, Because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work, Because it means I am out in the sun-shine.

For a lawn that needs mowing, win-dows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing, Because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government, because it means I have Freedom of Speech.

For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot, Because it means I am capable of walking and that I have been blessed with transportation.

For my huge heating bill, because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church that sings off key, Because it means that I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing, Because it means I have clothes to wear. For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day, Because it means I have been capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours, Because it means that I am alive.

And finally.....

For too much E-mail, Because it means I have friends who are thinking of me.

July. She is newly retired having taught Special Education at the secondary

school level for 34 years. Although she and her husband Robert have vaca-

tioned in Florida in the winter for the last 10 years, the fact that her two chil-

dren live in Orlando clinched the move. Frieda takes yoga classes, does

long distance bicycle riding, is taking golf lessons and loves reading and

kayaking.

Dr. Farnaz Hedayati

Farnaz is a doctor of corporate psychology, specializing in organization and

professional development. She is principal of The Center For Work Life, a

Amir and has two sons. In her free time she enjoys swimming, golf, writing

and jogs on the beach.

Gail Hmielowski

Gail and David, her husband of 41 years, moved to Florida 4 years ago from

Massachusetts to be near their daughter, an only child, and their 2 grandchil-

dren. Although Gail works part time for Macy’s now she taught first grade

She loves to volunteer with organizations supporting children and has a his-

tory of working in the crafting field.

Sandy Waters

Sandy is a native to Orlando having grown up in Forest City which now is

either Altamonte Springs or Apopka. She attended Lyman High School

Member Spotlight

Cristina Miller

By Lee Granger

The choice of venue, Luigiano’s Restaurant, a long time Heathrow favorite, seemed fortuitous and appropriate for my in-terview with Cristina Miller, this month’s featured Spotlight member. The lovely young woman, of Sicilian descent, en-dorsed the pasta dishes at the restaurant. And, she should know! She loves cooking Italian/Sicilian for her family and her father and brother co-own an Italian restaurant in the Chicago area. Among her favorite recipes are lasagna (made from scratch), chicken piccata, and just about any pasta (home made when she has the time). Her Sicilian roots and regular vis-its back to Italy make her keenly aware of the value of fresh ingredients. One of her earliest childhood memories was standing underneath the olive trees with her grandfather, shaking down the olives which would be used to make the next month’s supply of oil. She also fondly recalls the use of other handpicked ingredients such as, fresh lemons, figs, prickly pears, and wild herbs grown mountainside. Note to self--she always uses fresh tomatoes in her sauces! Cristina, daughter-in-law of our dear Becki Miller, joined our club earlier this year as she wanted to become more en-gaged in the community and give back. This will be additional participation since she is very involved in leading local mission and community outreach through her church. “I love making a difference in people’s lives,” she intimated. Cristi-na believes that Heathrow Women’s Club will give her an opportunity to do more of what she loves most. But, helping others isn’t her only passion. She is a devoted wife and mother to two daughters, ages 3.5 years and 2 years! That will keep one busy! She has been married to her husband for ten years after having met on a blind date and becom-ing engaged only six months later. Family connections have always been central to Cristina’s life. Her parents emigrated from Sicily in the 1980s and she is proud to be the first one of her immediate family to be born on American soil. She and her family still have strong ties to the old country, visiting annually, and last summer taking her girls with her for the first time. The extended family was thrilled. Cristina is bi-lingual (Sicilian-Italian) and is teaching the language to her daugh-ters, along with some of her passed down cooking skills. Growing up in the Chicago area, she became a hair color specialist after high school. Evidently, she still does some expert coloration on the side—if you’re lucky! She pursued study at Oral Roberts University in elementary education, before meeting her husband, Jonathan. She then moved to Ohio with him after the marriage. And, seven years ago, she and her spouse, along with Becki and her spouse, moved to Orlando to fulfill their calling. Although now in the land of Gators, Knights, and Seminoles, the Millers remain die-hard Ohio State football fans! Cristina appreciates beautiful “grandma” Becki taking her daughters on Monday evenings, so she and Jonathan can have “date night.” Becki inspired Cristina to join our club and she really enjoys it so far. Cristina appreciates the diversity in our membership where there is a great camaraderie and everyone is accepted. Cristina’s becoming a member of our club will certainly enrich our lives and benefit the Club’s endeavors.

Ways and Means

Raffle Baskets: The Ways and Means committee would like to thank those members that have donated or committed to donate raffle baskets at our general meetings. Last month’s basket donated by Pat Patane brought $278 for our charities. Our lucky winner was Miriam Weston.

Bake Sale: The December 10th luncheon is reserved for our Annual Bake Sale (yum). Join us in the fun and bring your favorite holiday baked goods. Include the recipe and notation if it has nuts. Make sure there is plastic wrap so that we can see your handy work. If you are not a baker, you can always make a monetary donation. Contact Sandy Schutt or Rosemary Robin-son for more information.

Healthy Living Expo: January 28th is the date of our first Healthy Living Expo. Heathrow Women ’s Club and Oakmonte Village will be hosting this exciting event between 11:00am and 3:00pm at Oakmonte Village. We expect over 40 vendors with the latest in medicine and health. Body wraps, acupuncture, salt treatments and much more. Bring your friends and family. This is free to all attendees.

Purse Auction: Our annual purse auction will take place at our February 11th luncheon. This has become a highlight event. Bring your new or like new purses with your name inside to our luncheons. Marie Dayton and Fran Carr will be in the lob-by to accept them now through February. There will be a silent auction followed by a live auction with our own Clety Gomez as auctioneer.

Gala: The Ways and Means committee is looking for volunteers to help with the “Starry, Starry Night” Gala on March 29th at the Lake Mary Marriott. Planning is already in progress and we need your participation. There are many opportunities to help make this our biggest fundraiser of the year. No experience necessary! Remember that many hands make light work. Contact Madelyn Faillaci or Ginny Castellani.

Sponsors: Our new sponsorship brochures have just been completed. If you know of any business or individual who expresses an interest in becoming a sponsor of HWC, please contact Madelyn or Ginny and they will follow up. This is a great advertising opportunity for businesses and supports our charities.

Fundraiser: Lake Mary Car Wash and Top Dog Car Wash continue to be an easy fundraiser. Just mention Heathrow Women’s Club and for each $10 spent, they will contribute $4 to HWCC. Friends and family can also participate.

If you haven’t decided on a committee, the Ways and Means Committee is a great place to get started. It is lots of fun and a great way to help.

Charitable Endeavors

8

For the past several years, the Charitable Endeavors Committee has sponsored a holiday gift program. These gifts will go to children in the guardian ad litem program who are clients of Friends of Abused Chil-dren and SafeHouse. We get names (they are ficticious) and the type of gift they want valued at about $25.00. Thank you to Linda Wright and Lynn Edwards who are co chairing this event for us this year and thank you to each of you who took a name and a gift choice at our No-vember luncheon. Please bring the unwrapped gift to the December luncheon. If you would like to participate but don’t have a name, please purchase a Target $25.00 gift card and bring it to the Decem-ber luncheon. This will cover the children who come into the system after we have been given the list. If you will not be at the December luncheon, please contact Linda Wright or Lynn Edwards to make ar-rangements for the gift. Many of you have expressed an interest in touring the Boys & Girls Club, so on Dec. 11, we have scheduled a tour to begin at 2:00pm. We will arrive before the children do and tour the facility and then watch the process as the children arrive and disperse to their different activities. We should be there about an hour. Please let Michelle or Judie know if you would like to join us— we will be car pooling. On November 14th, eight HWC members cooked with 20 children at the Boys & Girls Club. We all had a good time making turkeys and discussing good food choices. We have cooking classes scheduled for after school on Jan 9th and March 13th. If you would like to partici-pate, please let us know. Starting in January, we are trying to schedule a Birthday Party for the children at Boys & Girls Club who have a birthday that month. We will do them on Wednesday-time TBD. It should be a lot of fun and a nice way to make each celebrant feel special. We want to do one each month. Help is needed to get this program going. If you would like to share in the festivities, please let us know. Day of Beauty continues to be a big success at SafeHouse. Many of our members are involved with Bags of Hope/Kid’s Club Program and it is running smoothly. We welcome volunteers...No waiting lists! The more women we have, the more we can do for our charities. So come join us!
