2019 Summer
This Shrimper sets out to summarises Summer 2019 at Mid Kent GC.
Our Captain of 2019, Paul James and Lady Captain Grainne Hyland, celebrated their year of captaincy during Captain’s Week. Photos pages 3-6.
MKGC Men’s & Ladies’ teams put up fighting performances in regional & county competitions - Men pages 9 & 10, Ladies page 13.
Our Juniors, showed spirit and encouraging signs of revival - page 16 & 17.
Our social scene together with excellent bars & catering continued to be the envy of golf clubs throughout Kent.
On a sadder note, albeit enjoying a great summer, the Shrimpers remember those members playing the ’19th in the sky’. None more so and so cruelly & unexpectedly taken as Dave Ball & Albert Trevatt. R.I.P. - pages 14 &15.

MK - Better late than never - Shrimper Summer 2019 - an Introduction
Mid Kent Golf Club - #astrong team!
The obvious sometimes needs to be stated! As with any golf club that is a private members club, MKGC members communicate their views via their elected representatives, the Board of Directors. These often unsung volunteers give of their
time, on an unpaid basis for a minimum term of 3 years.
In 2019, in addition to the prime role of ensuring a superb golf course (which they have achieved in spades) your Board has had the additional, substantial task of bringing forward sound proposals for a ‘fit for purpose’ club house (either new or refurbished but one that will serve our needs for many years to come). Multiply that up by variations in style, cost & planning regulation considerations and you have a vast number of
variants to consider.
On a light but serious note, progressing this has oft proven to be Mid Kent’s very own ‘Brexit’. Your Board seemingly confronted by members claiming to be expert in every field from roof construction to the law of the land! Add to this brew a sizeable spoon full of ego with a dash of hubris and you will
start to understand the task faced by our Board!
Your Board has also had to contend with that most notorious issue of dress regulations, members’ manners towards guests and a single issue of minor but nevertheless very
time-consuming issue of a drug offence.
Supporting the Board are the General Manager, Steve Armstrong, his office staff Lisa Moore & Tina Smith and a formidable team of Course Manager Darryl Mannion (recently confirmed in the role, well done!), Bar Manager Kevin Pidwell and contract caterer Chianne Bal. Well done all of you ….
Putting up with us lot!
During the summer of 2019, Steve Armstrong announced his retirement in May 2020. This is a difficult role to fill and
candidates for it are now being actively recruited.
The Editor of the Shrimper conjoins in the thankyous to the office staff and additionally to members who provide so much input to this magazine. He would single out Dave Jackson for his magnificent photographs. Added to Dave are the Captains and team captains who provide reports of competitions and matches. It sometimes may seem that at one captain or another get more coverage than another. Sorry about that ladies and gentlemen, but it usually reflects the number of
words and photos provided.
Anyway, a big thank you to everyone who has supported me
this Summer.

Wilding Cole - Captain Baz reports.
Round 1 MKGC beat Sundridge Park 5/3. Players on the day
were Darren Drynan, Paul Johnson, Ian Jones, James Wise,
David Daly, Steve Barrow, Mick Browning & Dave Challis.
In the quarter final MKGC had a tough away match against
Royal Blackheath. Last year MKGC had lost 5/3 to them but
this year got revenge beating Royal Blackheath 4½ to 3½, a
great result with all the team playing really well. At the start it
looked like MKGC were storming through but Blackheath
rallied and MKGC scraped a win on the 18th, courtesy of Andy
Stelfox sinking a 15 foot put to win his match.
The 2nd match was strange - all square playing 18th, their
captain Paul Greenan bounced his second off the club house
roof to land back on the green to win the hole. Very lucky!
Team selected were much as round 1 with Stuart Hornby, Dan
Watkins & Andy Stelfox stepping up to cover unavailabilities.
Semi Final - a tough game in really rough weather. We went
3/1 down in the first 4 matches but rallied to win the next 3 with
our last match winning 1 up to give us a 5/3 victory over
Wrotham Heath. A thank you to Paul Johnson who at short
notice was added to the team on the day.
Final - MKGC stormed to a 5 & 3 win in a game played at the
alternate course, Sundridge Park (selected course would have
been Lamberhurst, but moved to alternate with Lamberhurst
reaching the final. MK players in the final were - Darren
Drynan, Ian Jones, James Wise, David Daly, Steve Barrow,
Mick Browning, Dave Challis, Andy Stelfox & Bob Pridmore.
Big thanks to all supporters, including Caddie Beverly for
keeping Steve calm in his match! Also thanks to my wife June
for moral support and Captain Paul for representing the Club.

MK Men’s Team Competitions 2019 - West Kent Trophy
Mid Kent GC V Eltham Warren GC
The day, a repeat of 2018 for both teams, set off to a perfect
start with the MK captain locating his hand-picked team all
hard it in the bar. The course was a great venue, the weather
perfect, although heavy rain was expected. The MK wel-
comed the earlier practice round provided. As this was the
Final and no away team advantage, the result would be de-
cided on the aggregate score if the result was If each team
had 4 wins , therefore the scoring was imperative .
At halfway the score line was of concern as MK were down in
at least 3 of the games.
The team, lead by Richard Jago (caddy Paul James ), who
despite being down at the turn, managed a 3 & 2 victory .
Martin Cosgrove (caddy Brian Peirce), doing nothing wrong &
playing very well, unfortunately was at the end of a 5 & 4 loss.
This was a great battle – through the round as Martin clawed
one back, his opponent, almost instantly won the next hole.
Mitch Gee (caddy Mark Gee) played an awesome game (in
his Dad’s words, the best he had ever seen him play).
Toby Johnson (caddy James Daly) had a great game from
the outset with an early lead of 4 up. His opponent then
gradually pinned him back with some great play. Toby gave
MK onlookers a bit of a scare to be all square at 16. Then
winning the 17th with a shaky first putt passing the hole by a
distance, he held his nerve to smash the return putt in for the
win. He played the final hole superbly to win the match 2 up.
Next up was Jas Marwaha (caddy Pat Quadling) who again
played a great game. From the outset Jas, setting his sights
on a win, hit some great shots (I think Pat told him he would
only walk in a straight line!) Again, a great victory 6 & 5 win.
Terry Felvus (caddy Martin Thompson) was next and really
up against it with a focused opponent who started fast out of
the blocks & clearly determined to win. Terry managed to go
16 holes to claw the match back to even, won the 17th to be
one up & then managed to skin his pressure shot into 18 to
find the tee box on the right-hand side of the green. This all
in front of a the crowd which had gathered. He then played a
great shot to secure a well-deserved half .
Nick Ralph (caddy Danny Underwood & ball spotter Brian
‘Lucky’ Copeland) was up against it from the outset. In spite
of Nick’s best efforts, the match ended in a 7-5 defeat.
‘Rear Gunner’ Steve Webster (caddies June & Barry Plumb)
has been the teams rock this year. Always willing to bring up
the rear and playing some exceptional golf, Steve straight
back from his holiday gave the team a great 5&4 win .
Final score and a win, Mid Kent 5½ to 2½ Eltham Warren.
Can I firstly congratulate the team who gave up their time to
retain this magnificent trophy. I include in this all the above-
mentioned players & other MK members who played a great
part in helping us get to the Final but for one reason or
another were unable to play in the final. Take a bow Adrian
Brett, Graham Peat, Clive Patterson, Danny Underwood &
Alex Rayner .
Appreciation must be given for their support throughout the
competition to past captains of the Trophy teams, Brian
Peirce, John Budd & Barry Plumb.
Caddies & ball spotters again made an invaluable
contribution to the team & players. Many thanks to them all
and MKGC Captain Paul James, Mark Foreman for his lucky
balls & energy bars and on behalf of all the team/caddies a
big thank you to Nick Brown (NB Groundworks) for his help in
sponsoring the team shirts. The team looked professional in
every match & have done Mid Kent Golf Club proud.
A big thanks to Shrimper Editor Bob Greenfield & MK
Secretary Steve Armstrong who have both been most
encouraging & helpful throughout the whole competition.
On a parting note, can I again thank all the team for a great
result in retaining the trophy. I wish them well for the rest of
the season & look forward to them next year retaining the
trophy.

MK Ladies - Kent Competitions
Bradley Cook
MK Ladies under their team captain, Brid McInerney, progressed to the semi finals which took place over the
weekend 30th & 31st August.
The away leg was played at Nizels on a lovely golfing day with the course playing very well. Mid Kent were beaten 3&2 by a narrow margin of 1 hole, Nizels scoring 8 points and Mid Kent 7
points.
The return match at Mid Kent, again was a beautiful day - sun shining, light breeze and the course in fantastic condition. Mid Kent won 3&2 scoring 11 points to Nizels’ 11 points. (Points are holes won and lost). On holes wn & lost, Nizels had 19 points and Mid Kent had 18 points. It was very disappointing to be
beaten by just 1 hole.
The team for both days (pictured above) were Kirsty Galbraith, Loo Brackpool, Kim Woodward, Nicola Sehmi and Julia Ridley. The girls gave it their all and Brid couldn’t have been be more
proud of them..
On Sunday, 6 October the Bradley Cook Trophy finals were held at Sittingbourne & Milton Regis. MK’s conquerors’ Nizels coming up against the 2018 winners Sundridge Park who had beaten Littlestone in the semi final.. Heavy rain the previous night and forecast for more on the day with strong winds caused concern as to the condition of the course. However, weather conditions were better than expected and the course playable. The winds remained strong and on some of the holes a cross wind made play challenging but there was very little rain.! This did not detract from an exciting final and all matches close-ly fought, with some players moving ahead on the back nine. Once again there were super displays of golf appreciated by supporters and committee alike. Tita McCart of Sundridge Park added to the excitement with a “Hole in One” on the par 3 7th.
Sundridge Park successfully defended their title to win the Trophy with 4 wins resulting in the last match being called in and halved. The report on such a tight Final served to emphasise just how close MK Ladies came to reaching the final.
Message to Shrimper readers - looking at the team photo who’s up for sponsoring some new team kit?! .
Coombe Cup
Run by Kent Ladies Golf Union for ladies of a certain age! For-
mat is foursomes.
Mid Kent had two pairs through to the semi-finals, Jean Sells & Sue Preston and Marilyn Brown & Wendy Jackson. Marilyn & Wendy beat Nizels to go through to the final, where they met the pair from Langley Park who had beaten Jean & Sue. Little-stone Warren was a blustery venue for the final on Monday 23 September. Pairs from Langley Park and from Mid Kent battled out a ‘nip and tuck’ final with Mid Kent coming through for a 2
and 1 victory on the 17th green.
Congratulations to members of both teams, Mid Kent A repre-sented by Marilyn Brown and Wendy Jackson and Barbara
Malangone and Monica Whelan representing Langley Park E.
On Sunday 1st September the finals of the Kent County Ladies Association were held at Wilderness. MK’s Julie Manderson played in the Three Feathers Bronze division for 23-36 handicaps. After getting off to a fast start going 5 up after 8 holes, out driv-ing her opponent by 80 to 100 yards, a small wobble for 3 holes then back to business winning 4 and 3. Well done Julie and thank you to the supporters who came on the day and to David, her caddy.

Albert Trevatt 1939 - 2019
Many of you may already have heard that Albert Trevatt died in the changing rooms at Mid Kent Golf Club on Friday 1st No-vember, despite the tremendous efforts of Lisa Moore, Robert Butler and Mark Foreman who done everything they possibly could to help him. Sadly, when Albert's wife was told the news, she collapsed and had to be admitted to hospital, but thankfully she has now re-turned home. Much loved & respected, he was popularly known as ‘’Uncle Albert’’. A MK Member for almost 10 years, he was just a cou-ple of weeks short of his 80th birthday. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
David Ball 1946 – 2019t
Sadly & unexpectedly, the 2019 Shrimpers Captain Dave Ball passed away this September. It was a massive shock to his wife Diane, members and his colleagues. Dave will be greatly
missed.
He was an active captain - just this summer, our photo above shows Dave presenting the Shrimpers’ £450 cheque to Club
Captain, Paul James for his Charity.
As this Shrimper goes to press, the Shrimpers committee are considering making the Owen Jones into a trophy in memory of all departed & dearly missed Shrimpers members. To progress this idea, the committee seeks knowledge of Owen or his
surviving family.
Happier days, Dave Ball with Club Captain Paul
At the Shrimpers AGM 11th Oct the 2019 Committee was duly re-elected as there were no other members offering
themselves up as officers. Those elected were - .

Kent U18’s won the England South Eastern Group County
Boys' Qualifier at Orsett Golf Club on 3rd July.
MK Junior Captain, Ollie Lewis Perkins and 5 other team
members provided an excellent performance beating 10 other
counties to go through to the National Finals. The format, the
best 5 gross rounds out of the 6 team members, saw Kent
shoot a level par score over the 36 holes and beating the 2nd
place team Surrey by 15 shots.
Ollie performed well in the individual event shooting a very
respectable 1 under par over the 36 holes and securing 3rd
place in the 66-man field.
The National Finals then took place at the beautifully presented
North Foreland GC over 3 days, 27th, 28th & 29th August.
The 1st day of play for Kent began in a match against Devon in
in a morning foursomes. They got off to a good start with a 7
and 5 win, after being 4 down at one point. After the morning
foursomes, Kent sadly missed out in the afternoon singles with
an extremely closely fought 3.5 to Devon and 2.5 to Kent, sepa-
rating the teams by just a single point and all of the individual
matches being extremely close.
The 2nd day saw Kent take on Lancashire looking to better their
performance and get points on the board. A superb start to the
day with Team Kent taking a 2.5 – 0.5 lead after the morning
foursomes with fantastic golf from all of the players. The after-
noon singles were packed with exciting golf from the very start.
Some matches finished in superb style such as
Oliver Lewis-Perkins holing his bunker shot on the 17th Hole to
take a 3 and 1 win in the afternoon singles! The team finished
the afternoon singles 2 – 4 meaning a 4.5 – 4.5 draw against
Lancashire and the first point on the board for team Kent.
The 3rd & final day saw team Kent take on Northamptonshire in
a turbulent morning of weather with looming dark clouds and a
major drop in temperature. With everyone fearing for the worst
weather possible, it managed to hold off and returned to
summer conditions by mid-morning. The foursomes against
Northamptonshire saw a tough morning session in all matches
with a close 2 – 1 loss by Kent. Looking to improve in the
afternoon singles matches, Northamptonshire were extremely
strong winning the first 5 matches and Kent, including Ollie by
5 & 4, losing the overall afternoon singles session 5 – 1, a total
of a 7-2 defeat, sadly a fourth-place finish for Kent overall.

A grandfather is in the supermarket with his Grandson, as they go past the toy aisle the grandson throws a
tantrum and screams for some toys. The grandfather says. “William. Take it easy, we won’t be here much
longer.” Again, as they go past the sweets aisle the boy throws another tantrum. Screaming for some
sweets. The Grandfather says. “Take it easy William. Relax, relax. We’ll soon be out of here.” At the check-
out he is throwing things out of the trolley. The Grandfather says. “Just hang on William. It’s not long and
we’ll be on our way home. Take it easy.” As they’re loading the car a women approaches them and says to
the Grandfather. “Please excuse me but I was watching you in the supermarket and I was very impressed
with the way you keep your cool and spoke calmly and reassuringly. You didn’t get angry or shout the boy.
William is very lucky to have a Grandfather like you. The man gave her an icy look and said. “Madam. I’m
William. The little sods’ name’s Kevin!
