As I write this article for the May magazine we are at the beginning of Holy Week, with our observance of the journey to the cross just ahead of us. This is a journey of faith that Christians remember together, with Christ, reflecting on the past events and remembering how much that Crucifixion has shaped our present. In the news currently are the various violent and unprovoked incidents that have happened in streets, on bridges and in churches across the world. Loved ones lost for ever in violent attacks, occasioning for so many people much fear, and anxiety about the future. At the same time as we remember Jesus and his obedience and love, we are in the middle of lambing and the trees are greening. ‘ Now the green blade riseth from the buried grain’ . By the time you read this Easter will be over, all the eggs will have disappeared from the shops, the news will have moved on, and people will be thinking about their summer holiday planning. What we are experiencing in life at a particular moment affects us at that point and often also resonates with experiences we have each had in past years, so we remember. Sadly we so easily move on to the next thing in our busy 21st century world. I wonder what sticks in your mind of your experiences of Easter this year or in years past and if it has affected you or changed you? Is it the music, time with the family and friends, a media programme, maybe singing in a choir or taking part in or watching a school production, the sight of Passion plays or films in the media? Is it the feel of the palms made into crosses or the smell and taste of the hot cross buns or chocolate? Or snow falling on Easter day as it did a few years ago? Easter has been for this year, but the message of Easter, of the cross and the resurrection shapes our stories for the rest of the year. We do not know what life holds for each of us, or for those who we love, however much we plan, but we can have faith that the message of the resurrection gives us hope for the future as we continue to journey together in faith.

News from the ChurChes

YYYYYYYYYYChanges in names! All of the Christian Churches are being challenged to work more closely together in the God for All Strategy across Cumbria and as part of this The Church of England Churches in this area are being joined together in a more formal way. We have been three groups of parishes working together for the past few years but all our groups are being joined into one group so that we can work more easily together and with our Christian neighbours. We will be known as the Heart of Eden Benefice. We await the last part of the process to be completed on the next stage of the journey. Help – Christian Aid – 14th to 20th MayChristian Aid Week this year is from the 14th to 20th of May. In 2016 we raised £5408; it could have been more, but the following roads were unvisited:

• The School Brow Estate• Garthshead Road• Thanet Terrace,• High and Low Wiend• Rampkin Pastures.

If you could take on one of these, or would be prepared to collect somewhere else, please give me a call nowYou may not care for door-to-door collecting, but perhaps you could help to raise money some other way: a Coffee Morning? … or perhaps, you could organise a Cake Sale in the Cloisters? At a time when a state of famine has been officially declared in Afria and the Near East, doing what we can to save children in their thousands from starvation is to do God’s work indeed. We’ve been reminded this year of how people we see on our televisions are faced with dying from hunger. Add to that the horrors of warfare and terrorism and we can’t be unaware of the urgent need there is in so many parts of the world. And we can help. Not many of us can go abroad to the crisis points, offering the skills that are desperately wanted. But our cash will help to send those who can. And it’s remarkable how much can be achieved with just a little money. The Appleby District has a good record in raising funds during Christian Aid Week. By giving your cash or your time in collecting or organising a money-making event you can help to make 2017 a success. For information contact: Roger Collinson on 52886A contribution from Bishop Robert: Making space for God’s grace and mercyI was recently with someone who had been in conversation with Pope Francis. Not a stand-in-line-and-wait-to-be-politely-introduced conversation, but a proper face-to-face talk about all sorts of things. In the conversation the person asked Pope Francis “What is prayer”? It’s the sort of question I dread being asked because it is such a simple and obvious question, and usually those simple questions are the most difficult to answer. The answer Pope Francis gave struck me as being incredibly insightful. He said, “Prayer is making space for the grace and mercy of God.” I can’t pretend to understand his answer, and that’s probably why it is so helpful. It makes clear that when we pray it isn’t us that are somehow trying to persuade or direct God. God in his grace and mercy is at work in this world all the time and everywhere, whether or not we are praying, and whether or not our prayers are amazing or feeble. But Pope Francis suggests that our prayers matter and make a difference. Not because we manage to persuade God to do something that otherwise wouldn’t have happened, but because our love, concern and faithfulness towards others and situations somehow helps create a gap for God’s mercy and love to be at work. Through our prayer, in a way that can’t be explained by science or philosophy, God’s generous love is at work.God for AllAcross Cumbria churches and Christians have committed themselves to a purpose and a process called God for All. Our desire is that everyone in Cumbria, whether that is ourselves as people involved with church or the many who feel distant from church and even from God, may ‘discover more of God and God’s purpose for our lives’. All sorts of initiatives and plans are being put in place to help make that possible and all that is good. But none of what is being planned or done will be fruitful unless it connects with the will and purpose of God, and is inspired and empowered by God.

Which is why, within all the 101 things that are being organised through God for All, the most important is prayer ¬– making space for the mercy and grace of God in our lives, in our communities and in our plans and ideas. Each year there is a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. That Week of Prayer sometimes tends to look internally – the barriers between Christians and our common life in Christ. But Jesus prayed that we ‘might be one, so that the world might believe’. Unity is not an end in itself. Unity strengthens mission.Thy Kingdom Come We are now, rightly, being encouraged to develop a ‘Week of Prayer for Christian Mission’. Called ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ it will run from 4 to 11 June in 2017. ‘Mission’ is a big word and covers many aspects of what God is doing in the world. Thy Kingdom Come has a special emphasis on evangelism – a focussed time to pray for family, friends and communities so they may discover the reality of God in new ways, and respond to the good news of Jesus Christ. A time to make space for the grace and mercy of God to be at work in them.My personal hope is that all churches and Christians across Cumbria will use this opportunity to specially and intentionally prayer for people across our world, our county and closer to home to discover the reality of God and the good news of Jesus Christ. And my hope is that increasingly the God for All prayer will be used by Christians when they meet to give a focus to prayer, and to keep us engaged with and open to what God is doing – used Sunday by Sunday, or at church meetings, or home groups or in private prayer. May our prayers make space for the mercy and grace of God within us and through us.God for all, you reached out to the world in your Son Jesus Christ. Help us to reach out in faith and love and witness to all. God for all, you send your Holy Spirit to empower and gift your Church.By your Spirit help us grow in unity, grow as followers of Jesus Christ, and grow your kingdom in Cumbria and in this world. Amen.

YYYYYYYYYYYTown Council ReportRoyal VisitOn 11th April Appleby was honoured by a return visit from the Prince of Wales, who was anxious to see for himself the extent to which we have recovered from the floods. His Royal Highness spent more than an hour close to the town bridge meeting the public and uniformed organisations and in the Sands Methodist Church Hall where he was introduced to a range of officers and community representatives, including some of the residents and businesses that had been flooded. He then visited Appleby Creamery. The depth of his interest in and concern for Appleby impressed all who met him.

Encouraging Tourism Appleby-in-Westmorland Town Council has launched a new website aimed at visitors to the town. The website address is www.visitappleby.com. The website was designed and developed by Appleby Community Enterprises (ACE) and funded by a grant from the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (Cumbria LEP), administered through Eden District Council. The launch event on Thursday 6th April 2017 at the Moot Hall was attended by representatives from the tourism industry across Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales and included a tasting session of locally supplied produce. Guests also enjoyed historical guide to the town by Blue Badge Guide Ron Smith and a tour of Appleby Castle.

Big Screen Returns to ApplebyAppleby’s Cosy Cinema, located in the Public Hall, closed in 1961. But now the big screen has returned thanks to the splendid efforts of local volunteers who have been showing feature films under the aegis of Eden Arts Remote Cinema, using borrowed equipment. On 9th April a drop down screen located on the stage was formally unfurled. It has been generously funded by grants from Appleby Flood Relief Fund, Appleby Rotary Club and the Peter Norton charity.

Mayor Making and Civic ServiceJohn Pape decided that he did not wish to continue as town mayor for a second year and his deputy Stan Rooke felt unable to take office in the coming year. Former mayor Andy Connell has been nominated to serve for the year 2017-18. The Mayor making ceremony will take place at the Moot Hall on 10th May at noon. The Civic Service, conducted by the Rev. Roger Collinson will be held in St Lawrence’s Church at 1045 on 14 May; residents and friends of Appleby are cordially invited.

New CouncillorThe Council is delighted to have been joined by Duncan Curley, who will represent Appleby ward following an uncontested election. Duncan grew up and went to school in the town, where his family is well known, before attending university and working London. He has now returned to his roots.

CloistersRe-paving, which became increasingly necessary after the December 2015 floods, is scheduled to be carried out in May. The area around and through the main gates to St Lawrence’s will be closed while work is in progress. The work is planned to start on 15th and last for up to 2 weeks.

subject of her talk. From the very earliest of times, place names have been ‘the signposts of history’. From the days when wolves and bears still roamed the fells and the Beaker people cremated their dead, Cumbria places have been named using the suffixes …how and ..tor and the prefix pen…, often attached to the name of a local chieftain. With the coming of the Romans, … caster, …chester, …wick and …street were prominent in the naming of new settlements. Later, as the Roman Empire retreated, old Celtic names reasserted themselves, giving us Penrith, Lyvennet, Glenridding and Blencathra among others. The ‘yan tan, tethera…’ formula for sheep-counting was similar to that used in Cornwall, Wales and across the Pennines in Durham. The Middle Ages brought enclosure of common lands, the importance of monasteries and the building of pele towers as the border with Scotland became more contested, hence The Debatable Lands. Curiously, neither the early Norwegians nor the German miners brought to the Keswick Area in Elizabethan times made much impact in place-name terms. The 1974 Local Government Act, which saw Cumberland and Westmorland combined into the new county of Cumbria, caused conflict of a different kind. For two years Appleby fought to win the right to add ‘…in-Westmorland’ to its title, thus commemorating it as the former county town of Westmorland, with some of the customs attaching to that status remaining today.Realising the audience would have a keen interest in matters close to home, Jean listed Bongate as the street of the ‘not free men’ or bondsmen, Boroughgate as the main street of the borough as it was formerly, Doomgate, the street of trials, the Wiends as narrow streets or alleys, Battlebarrow as nothing to do with conflict but a rich fertile pasture, nearby Hoff as the site of a heathen temple and Burrells, a burial site. What any audience members with homes in Scattergate made of its former designation as an open sewer is not known! Thanking the speaker, Chairman Davina Osman announced the return of a former Society tradition of occasional visits, with the planned outing in late June to see St Wilfrid’s Chapel followed by tea and cakes at Brougham Hall Café. (ends) Appleby-in-Westmorland Society outingA visit has been organised for Thursday 29 June to St Wilfrid’s Chapel at Brougham where a talk will be followed by tea and cakes at Brougham Hall Cafe. Success On The Tables For Local Society ‘Saving for a rainy day’ had real meaning for Appleby Bowling Club, who took a space at the recent Appleby-in-Westmorland Table Top Sale to raise money for their flood fund, on the lines of ‘not if, but when’.Held in the Bowling Club’s newly-renovated clubhouse, the tabletoppers usually present at this twice-yearly fixture in Appleby’s calendar were all there. The sale overflowed into the car park, where Pauline Coward and family braved the inclement weather under their gazebo to sell the house contents of an elderly relative who had moved to a retirement home.Mother and son veterans of the local bric-a-brac scene Anne and David Johnson were again raising money for Help for Heroes, offering cranberry glassware and cold cast bronze ornaments as well as a selection of meerkat dolls. Not to be outdone in the animal stakes, Sue Dawson soon sold most of her mother’s collection of almost life-size collies, two to someone who already had a real collie. Shedding light on the proceedings with a good stock of bayonet fitting ‘real’ light bulbs at a knock-down price, Archie Spence also had on his table items from his wife’s and grand-daughter’s childhood. At the far end of the hall, regulars Gail Chorley and her friend Val Irwin did a brisk trade, Gail’s 1930s table top cigarette cabinet, Victoria Diamond Jubilee glass plate and pearlware dish catching the eye. A local dealer quickly snapped up a World War Two signalling lamp from Gail’s stall. Based in Brunswick Yard in Penrith, he said he was always on the lookout for the old tinplate advertising signs which used to proliferate on the outside walls of shops, but this was not to be his lucky day.Good luck and skill had combined for one of the ladies running the Arthritis Research stall. Pat Newsam proudly displayed a Gold Award won the previous day at the Dalemain World Marmalade Championships in the Gardeners’ Marmalade class, made with produce from the entrant’s garden. Pat, a guide at Dalemain, also showed off a Bronze Award won in a general class. Needless to say, stocks of marmalade soon sold out, but together with colleagues Evelyn Milburn and Stephanie Parker she had plenty of other goods, including knitted Easter chicks containing mini Easter eggs.Retired Society Chairman Ian Campbell’s table had a shove ha’penny board made of slate, plus some prints by T. Allen, a notable engraver. Maggie Clowes showed some elegant scarves and jewellery, while Dot Anderton had the results of a spring turn-out for herself and her daughter on offer. Ann Preston-Green and Doreen Holland’s table contained mostly craft items, including Doreen’s delicate beaded jewellery and striking gold and silver greeting cards. Despite the inclement weather which had reduced numbers attending, organiser Judith Sowerby declared herself well pleased with the profit of over £117.00 reported by Treasurer Rosemary Spence. Judith thanked Society Chairman Davina Osman and helpers Millie Dargue, Vivienne Gate, Heather Hullock, Eric Fleming and not least Bowling Club representatives Eric Dent and Laurie Laidlow. (ends)What’s In A Name?On a recent evening in Appleby, the all-too-familiar Cumbrian tradition of a torrential downpour outside was only matched by the deluge of information with which local historian Jean Scott-Smith regaled her audience.Warm and dry in the Public Hall Supper Room, members of the Appleby-in-Westmorland Society were treated to a march through time, courtesy of Jean Vice-Chairman of Shap History Society, one of her other roles, Secretary of the Cumbria Dialect Society, being particularly apt for the
