President’s Message:
Hello to all the AMT family,
The VSSAMT has been busy the last few months. In the fall of 2014 we had our Magnolia
Treasures in Gatlinburg, Tenn. This event was hosted by the members of Tennessee AMT and
they did a wonderful job. The Magnolia Treasures is a great place to see old friends and new
ones but this is also a chance to attend the superb educational sessions. This meeting makes it
easy to get many of your required continuing education credits for the year. The future of the
next Magnolia Treasures will be discussed at the National Convention in Hawaii.
We have ordered new state pins and the picture on the front page of this newsletter
shows these. These should be available for sale by the National Convention.
We had election at our meeting in March and the pictures and names of our officers and
board members are available in this newsletter. In March, we had our educational meeting,
business, and board meetings. Several new lab professionals attended and we want to thank
them for attending but we want to encourage more of our VSSAMT members to attend the
next meeting. Pictures are scattered throughout this newsletter so you can see what happens
at these meetings.
Just in case no one knows, the National Convention in Hawaii is coming up. If you have
never attended on of these, please consider trying one. You will learn a lot and have lots of fun
for these few days. In 2016, this convention will be in Memphis, Tennessee so start making
plans now because this convention is close to our state.
The next important news I have is our new website. It is up and ready for you viewing.
This website is available from the national website and then going to the Virginia website site or
by using this address:
http://www.americanmedtech.org/BeInvolved/StateSocieties/VirginiaStateSociety/VirginiaStateSocietyHomepage.aspx
The time and place of future meetings will be decided at the National Convention and
will be posted on our website.
My phone number and email are in this newsletter and on the website so just let me
know if you have any questions or there is anything I can help you with.
Thanks for allowing me to represent you as VSSAMT President. Patty Harris

EDITOR’S MESSAGE:
Hello, all!! I hope you have survived the winter and now can enjoy the beautiful
spring weather. We had a great state meeting on March 28 in Salem, VA. I wish
more of you could have been there. We had really great educational sessions
and held our business and board meetings. We elected delegates to the 2015
National Convention in Hawaii and allotted a delegate assistor fee for those
who are attending. Virginia will have six delegates attending!!
I hope each of you will be celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals Week
April 19-25, 2015. If your lab celebrates in a special way, please share pictures
with us through your newsletter. Just send your photos to myself or our president,
Patty Harris, and we will try to incorporate them into the next edition.
Don’t forget—it’s your newsletter and you can submit articles and pictures.

Spring 2015 Southern District Councillor’s Message
Hawaii will be the site of the 2015 National Meeting at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel in Kohala
Coast, Hawaii June 22-25, 2015. Make sure you make those flight reservations to fly into Kona
International airport. It is very important you register for the meeting in advance. The only
option available this year is the full package. Remember you must preregister in order to get
your $ 350 dollar reimbursement. Preliminary program should be coming out in the March
Events magazine. Room rates are $ 169 plus tax brings your room rate to $ 191.67 per night.
Every room has an ocean view and your very own lanai. Rooms are spacious and beautifully
decorated and include marble bathrooms with separate tub and walk-in shower. Each room
includes a coffee maker, mini-refrigerator, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, safe,
complimentary internet in guestrooms, admission to the fitness center and self parking.
However there will be a charge for valet parking. There is an outdoor pool with cabanas and a
heated whirlpool. Attire is casual wear for the entire week. No formal attire please! Also, no
swim suits or bikini's allowed in the meeting rooms. For you golfers, there is the 18 hole
Hapuna Golf Course designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. There are 10 restaurants to
choose from on the premises! Free transportation to the sister resort or for a $ 5-$10 fee you
can hop on the shuttle to the Hilton Waikoloa and shop till you drop at the connected shopping
mall. State gift baskets will be taking a hiatus for the 2015 Hawaii meeting due to shipping
logistics. They will continue in 2016 in Memphis, TN. In its place state societies are asked to
bring a gift card that can be used by anyone in any state. Plan on spending a few extra days
on the island so you can visit Volcano National Park or the Kona Coffee Plantation. Diane Powell
has arranged for a discount with Delta and United. There is a special code. Watch your AMT
Events magazine or go to the AMT website for update information. Robert's Hawaii Express
Shuttle is a private shuttle service you can use at a discounted price. $ 58.65 round trip, arrival
or departure only will be $ 32.30. Please visit the AMT annual meeting 2015 Hawaii site for all
information. Make sure you read the frequently asked questions. Answers to your questions
just may be found there.
Let’s not forget to recognize and celebrate National Dental Assistants Week March 1-7, 2015
and Medical Laboratory Professionals Week April 19-25, 2015.
AMT has partnered with The American Kidney Fund (AKF) to spread the word about kidney
disease. Kidney disease is quite often preventable and affects over 31 million Americans.
Together AKF and AMT will work hard to make the public aware of this chronic disease and
help raise funds to support the many programs and services available through AKF. Watch for
email blasts with updated information.
Remember to record all your continuing education credits in AMTRAX. Make sure you retain
your documentation in case of an audit. The program is free to all AMT members. Those AMT
members that fall under Certification Continuation Program (CCP), please make sure you have
the proper points to remain certified.

Highlights of Spring 2015 Educational

On March 28th VSSAMT hosted an Educational Session for all state members and other guests in the
medical field. We had three sessions (1) Take Care of Your Kidneys-You Only Have Two, (2 Let’s Make a
Diff-The Play Doh Way, and (3) Fragile X. The hit was seeing everyone making red cells, white cells, and
platelets with Play-Doh. All pictures were made by Patty Harris.
